he Connetquot Central School District Board of Education recently honored several students from Oakdale-Bohemia Middle School for their achievements during the annual Battle Of The Books in Suffolk County. Out of the 41 participating schools in the competition, Connetquot’s OBMS placed 4th overall. The school also received the Team Choice Award, a non-scoring award given to the team who displays great teamwork.

Anthony Felicio, Jr., President of the Connetquot Teachers Association (CTA), along with Peter Leis, President of the Connetquot Retired Teachers Association (CRTA), was invited to attend the October 10th Bagels And Books Breakfast at the Children’s Center at the Cohalan Court Complex in Central Islip. Felicio was invited to join fellow children’s advocates who have been working together with the Education & Assistance Corporation (EAC). The EAC operates the Childrens Center to provide a safe area for youngsters while their families are involved in court hearings. Connetquot teachers have supplied children’s books, healthy snacks, bottled water and fruit juices, tissues and paper towels to be used by the youngsters for several years. Felicio said that “It is such a pleasure to be part of, and in support of the EAC, an organization that helps so many children. As teachers, we go into the profession

because we love working with and helping kids. We do that every day within the school house; to be able to have a positive effect on young children outside of the classroom is very gratifying to us.” The center is open 5 days per week, from 9 A.M. to 1 P.M. under the supervision of Head Teacher Wendy Meyer. Last year the Children’s Center serviced over 1,100 children, and since January of 2013 over 700 children, and 600 families, have found comfort at the center. Connetquot teachers will also be providing hats, scarves, gloves and toys to the Children’s Center over the next several months. Felicio added, “I want all Connetquot teachers to know just how genuinely appreciated their efforts are. I have been reminded by our friends at the EAC that our support is integral to the continuing success of the Children’s Center at the Cohalan Court Complex. I have assured the EAC of the continuing support of

the Connetquot Teachers Association.”

Music & Art Honorees

During their weekly meeting, the Connetquot Central School District Board of Education recently honored three Connetquot High School (CHS) students for their achievements in music. CHS student Brandon Walters was the first Connetquot High School student ever to be chosen to attend the All-National Music Festival, which will be held in October 2013 in Nashville, Tennessee. Students Nevin Shah and Kayla Boedner were selected for the 2013 NYSSMA All-State Music Festival which will take place in December 2013 in Rochester, New York. On Thursday, October 10th, Connetquot Teachers Association (CTA) President Anthony Felicio, Jr., was invited to speak at an ‘Educational Forum’ sponsored by New York State Assemblyman Al Graf at Suffolk Community College, in Brentwood. Students in Josette Celiberti and Kelly Bothwell’s Transition Service Program (TSP) classes at Eastern Suffolk BOCES (ESBOCES) Brookhaven Learning Center (BLC) sorted, folded, and packaged over 500 Autism Speaks t-shirts for Team ESBOCES. T-shirt orders came into BLC from across the ESBOCES agency. Four tables were placed in the multi-purpose room. Signs were placed above the tables as a visual to help the students sort and stack the t-shirts by size. They transitioned from table to table collecting t-shirts based on the order form information. When

they were finished a staff member checked that the order was filled correctly and signed off on the paperwork. Principal Nancy Smalling said, “This task provided the students an opportunity to focus on skills like sequence, order, and math. This also gives them a chance to interact and use their social skills with their peers.” Students in TSP learn essential life skills, self-advocacy, and independence to successfully transition from the school environment to post school options.

Before Felicio answered questions from Assemblyman Graf and his panel, he read a prepared statement. Part of that statement read: “A child who goes to school hungry, or goes to bed cold, or lives in a druginfested community, or comes from an abusive household … it doesn’t matter what you call it – Common Core, No Child Left Behind - those children will not learn.” He went on to say “We often hear from those outside of the educational system that schools should be run like a business. Companies like Disney,

Microsoft, Apple and other successful corporations, do not introduce new programs without the proper training for those professionals responsible for implementing that new plan. In the case of Common Core minimal funding has been invested to properly train the teachers who will be working with that program, in the classroom. Investing in appropriate training should be the number one priority of New York State if it expects to implement a new program such as this.” Assemblyman Graf, and his panel, thanked Felicio for his comments, and assured him that his views would now be included in the panel’s final report. As we head into the holiday season, it is crucial to realize just how caught up we can get in the trickor-treating, gift buying and pumpkin carving. Sure, these things are important, but the true measure of a successful holiday is the quality of the memories we create with our family. Some of my fondest memories took place around a Christmas Tree. Others derived from the carving of the turkey. More still were captured while dressed up in Halloween garb with my mom, dad and little brother. I vividly remember being carried in my father’s arms, dressed as a pumpkin, while my brother was in

his stroller, dressed as a pea! As Halloween is right around the corner, our minds shouldn’t be focused on getting to Christmas, but enjoying the ride. Each day is a blessing. Throughout my seventeen years on this Earth, I have learned many things. To me, the most important tidbit is that: “In today’s society, the family unit is broken up. When we’d sit down to dinner together as a family, we’d learn about each other. group, the family, has been torn apart by modern happenings. In school, I take a class called Sociology, in which we learn that the most powerful group is a family. Weber, Marx and countless other sociologists have their own view on the family unit. All of them unanimously agree that, without those related to us by blood, we would be nothing. Keeping in contact with those we care about is especially crucial around the holidays. Throughout all of the gift-giving and traditions, find time to spend a moment with those you love, your family.

One Year Later By: Jamie Lynn Ryan Almost exactly one year ago, Long Islanders experienced what can only be described as the wrath of Mother Nature in the form of Hurricane Sandy. In the midst of power outages and damage assessment, we here at South Bay’s Neighbor Newspapers managed to publish a newspaper, and I – displaced from my home on the south shore – attempted to compile a few thoughts in an effort to produce a column amid the chaos. Here are a few excerpts… We always think it’s not going to happen here. Whatever “it” is, we have grown so used to absently

observing most catastrophes from a distance, never foreseeing the day when they will wind up right in our own backyards. Literally. Some people lucked out. Others were not so fortunate, and will spend the next few weeks and months – years even – cleaning up all that was left behind, however little it may be. They say someone always has it worse off than you, and this is true. Except in this case, many of those most devastated happen to be our family members, friends and neighbors – the worst off of whom don’t even have a home to go back to. As with all events of this magnitude, peoples’ true colors tend to shine through, for better or worse. Here in the Long

Island/New York City area, we have witnessed a bit of both. But there are slivers of brightness struggling to shine through the chaos. Strangers banding together to organize food and clothing drives, businesses opening their doors to the public for heat, shelter, a place to charge cell phones and laptops and reconnect with the outside world… all signs that, amidst the mayhem, some basic humanity does exist. Let’s all hang in there. Together, we can – and will – get through this. And we have. Mostly. Some better than others. Still a long road to full recovery, but at least we have begun the journey.

Dr. Charles Greco, DVM visited the Eastern Suffolk BOCES (ESBOCES) Brookhaven Technical Center (BTC) Animal Science Program to speak to the students about what it means to be a veterinarian and the variety of jobs available at a veterinary hospital. Dr. Greco’s is an adjunct Professor at Suffolk County Community College in Veterinary Technology and has an extensive background having worked with the Suffolk County Police K-9 Units. He also specializes

in small and exotic animals like birds and reptiles and is a member of several associations that promote humane treatment and promote conservation of species through education and habitat preservation. He also owns both the Animal Medical Hospital of Centereach and Pinewood Commons Veterinary Hospital in Ridge. Animal Science Teacher Lisa Mongiello said, “In addition to being a licensed veterinarian, Dr. Greco is a retired Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals (SPCA) officer.

He spoke about animal law and welfare and provided a wealth of information to the students.” Over the years, Dr. Greco has provided internship opportunities for the ESBOCES Animal Science students. “It’s great to have someone with his background and expertise speak to the students because he can fully explain the commitment and dedication it takes to get into veterinary school and be a veterinarian,” said Mongiello.

Teachers, spouses, parents and students representing the Connetquot Teachers Association (CTA) took part in the annual Make Strides Against Breast Cancer Walk at the Brookhaven campus of Dowling College, on October 6th. Organized by CTA members Joanna McManaman and Lisa Manzo, the Connetquot contingent was part of the organization’s effort to reach its goal of $1,500 to help fight breast cancer. According to CTA President Anthony Felicio, Jr., “The Connetquot Teachers Association was proud to take part in, and again support the Making Strides Against Breast Cancer Walk. Thanks to our

two organizers, Lisa Manzo and Joanna McManaman for their continuing efforts on behalf of this worthy cause.” Since 1993, more than 9 million walkers across the U.S. have raised close to $600 million to help fight breast cancer through Making Strides events. In 2012 alone, one million walkers across America raised $68 million to continue the fight against breast cancer. According to Anne Thorsen, Dirctor of Special Events for the American Cancer Society, “… the funds raised at these events continue the fight to end breast cancer.” The American Cancer Society (ACS) program helps people take steps to

reduce their risk of breast cancer, and educates women on methods of early detection. The ACS invests in research to find, prevent, treat and cure the disease. The organization also provides free information and services to help people facing breast cancer today, and ensure access to mammograms for women who need them. Felicio praised the efforts of Thorsen and her organization, and thanked the Connetquot community for it’s generous support in the fight against breast cancer. MAKING STRIDES - Connetquot Teachers Association members, spouses, children and friends joined in the October 6th march to fight breast cancer. Photo by: Joseph Maniaci The South Shore 4H Club, in conjunction with Keep Islip Clean (KIC), participated in this year’s 28th Annual International Coastal Clean Up. The Cleanup is a global event coordinated by the American Littoral Society and the Ocean Conservancy. The 4H group of 25 members, ages 9-16, cleaned up Quintuck Creek and its surrounding waterways and marshlands in East Islip. The group coordinated 5 boats, with smaller boats run by 4H members that could access the more shallow arms of the creek. “We were extremely surprised that we collected

400 lbs of garbage. We never realized there was so much. It’s hard to believe so many boats just drive right by that much garbage everyday,” says Paul Rodriguez,4H President and Junior at St. Anthony’s High School. The South Shore 4H Club’s mission revolves around environmental stewardship and participation in this event demonstrates global, national and local environmental awareness. Nancy Cochran, Executive Director of KIC, said “This group is amazing. This was probably the best Coastal Clean Up we have ever had. You really

do not know what’s out there that’s harmful to our environment until you make an effort to clean it up.” The group filled KIC member Christian Muller’s 14 foot boat with large garbage bags, four tires and a shop vac!. Muller, 4H Treasurer and 8th grader at The Stony Brook School, commented, “It’s sad to say but we could have kept going and probably filled another boat.” The club recorded every piece of garbage and sent the data to Ocean Conservancy scientists, who track global pollution trends. Students in Patrick Brennan’s class at the Brookhaven Learning Center (BLC) fastened Eastern Suffolk BOCES (ESBOCES) lighthouse logo labels on water bottles for the upcoming Autism Speaks Walkathon on Sunday, October 6th, at Jones Beach State Park.

Members of Team ESBOCES will get these specially wrapped bottles to keep them hydrated during the walk. Principal Nancy Smalling said, “The task of labeling the bottles provides the students in this 8:1:1+2 classroom the opportunity to do group work, follow instructions,

foster independent skills, learn patience, interact and use their social skills.” In total, 10 cases (or 240 water bottles) were relabeled by Patrick Brennan and Dorothy O’Donohoe’s special education classes.

Beyond Stop Drop & Roll Blue Point Elementary School students marked this year’s Fire Prevention Week by participating in a safety workshop at the Blue Point Fire Department. After walking across the street to the firehouse, the students met with volunteer firefighters to discuss the importance of smoke alarms, the need to practice fire drills at home and reasons why they should identify a family

meeting place. After watching a video about how to stay safe in the kitchen, the students took turns navigating through a modular “smoke house.” They practiced how to properly exit a building when the smoke detectors sounded and artificial smoke filled the house. Under the supervision of a firefighter and their classroom teacher, the students successfully

navigated through the simulation and exited the house by climbing out a window or, for the younger grades, through a door. During the students’ visits to the fire department, they also had the opportunity to explore the outside of a fire truck, learn about the protective gear worn by firefighters and even take turns putting out a “fire” using a firefighter’s water hose.

Feeling fortunate about “looping”* with her First Graders into Second Grade this year, Sayville elementary teacher Ms. Denise Philp at Sunrise Drive found a symbolic way to express her gratitude by just looking out her classroom window. Ms. Philp noticed that the trellises built outside her classroom were in need of vines to “loop” through them. “It was a perfect activity

for my ‘looping class’ to kick off the year,” Ms. Philp remarked. So she and her class explored species of vines that would “loop and grow” outside the classroom as the kids would “loop and grow” inside the classroom. In early October, Ms. Philp and her students, along with some parents who gave their assistance, dug, raked, watered, and threaded vines through the trellises.

20 YEARS OF SERVICE - Suffolk County Legislator Tom Barraga had the pleasure of presenting Ocean Beach Chief of Police George B. Hesse a proclamation for his twenty years of service on the police force. Chief Hesse was first sworn in as an Ocean Beach police officer in December of 1992. He was promoted to Sergeant in 2001 and later promoted to Chief of Police in January of 2006. During his career, Chief Hesse has been commended for his heroic acts; receiving the Police Bravery Bar in 2012, and in 2013 the American Legion Medal of Heroism as well as the Suffolk County Sandy Bar for the rescue of a village worker during Super Storm Sandy.
