hantom pride filled the air as Bayport-Blue Point School District celebrated Homecoming the second weekend in October. The festivities commenced on Friday with the high school Pep Rally, and continued the next morning with the traditional Hall of Fame induction ceremony. The BBP Phantoms maintained a strong lead against Greenport/Southold/Mattituck, which ended in a victory for BBP with a score of 40-0.

Student Spotlight THE LOSS OF INNOCENCE SUBMITTED BY: JUSTIN MCGOWAN, AGE 16, MASSAPEQUA HIGH SCHOOL

I am alarmed by the large number of kids in my school who, in recent days, have claimed that America should keep to itself and out of world affairs. Some have even gone as far as to say that we should be completely isolationist. I have heard this argued in debates at the debate club I helped start at my school, and in my Ethics class. I consider myself to be well-versed in American history so, for a moment, let’s look back to times when America didn’t lead in the world: 6 million Jews died in German concentration camps, Soviets invaded Afghanistan, Americans were taken hostage and held for over a year in Iran, 800,000 Rwandans were killed

over a 100 day period, 350,000 Bosnians were killed in the bloody genocidal regime of Slobodan Milosevic, and now we have ISIS, which has formed as a result of decreased U.S. military presence in Iraq. Students reason this way because they claim America is too aggressive, arrogant and has caused more harm than good, of course drawing all of their evidence off the Iraq War. Though some of this may be true, millions have died when we don’t take a leadership role in the world. That’s not being an arrogant American - that’s the truth. But can the students really be blamed? In classrooms, students are fed this information in AP U.S.

History courses that have a curriculum that is heavily liberally biased and cannot be changed. Though it has reformed lately, it has claimed that we fulfilled manifest destiny to flex our “culturally superior” muscle and that the end of the Cold War should be mainly attributed to Mikhail Gorbachev, not to Ronald Reagan, whose arms race and build-up ultimately caused the Soviet Union to go broke. So there it is - the question is answered, students can’t be blamed. Unless they do an extensive amount of studies on their own time, they will not realize that if America doesn’t lead, the world will fall apart.

Students Volunteer Connetquot Central School District’s Idle Hour Elementary School fifth grade students in the Peer Mediator program recently volunteered at the 1st Suffolk County Marathon and Half Marathon. Eight Idle Hour Elementary School students arrived at Hecksher State Park at

6:30 a.m. to help fill water cups for race participants, which they handed to runners at the start of the race. The Connetquot School District’s Peer Mediators program helps teach students skills such as conflict resolution, teamwork and respect by drawing upon

various standards and best practices guidelines from youth development programs. Peer Mediators represents the collected expertise and passions of dozens of peer mediation trainers, practitioners and researchers from around the world.

This year’s class of inductees included Billy Purdy (Class of 2004), Bill Shuren (Class of 1996), Coach Bill Hutchinson, Kerri Brown Bullock (Class of 1999) and Chris Cavanaugh (honorary). The traditional homecoming parade, which began at Blue Point Elementary and ended at the entrance to the high school football stadium, was widely attended by community members of all ages. The event featured student musicians from the district’s elementary and secondary schools along with floats created by the high school grade levels and candidates for

homecoming queen. At halftime of the football game, Kerrigan Miller was crowded this year’s queen and the senior class was named the winner of the float contest with their entry based on the video came Mario Brothers. Dan Kruse was crowned this year’s king during the homecoming pep rally. The BBP Phantoms maintained a strong lead throughout the homecoming varsity football game against Greenport/Southold/ Mattituck, which ended in a victory for BBP with a score of 40-0.

The Islip Town Board today appointed George J. Munkenbeck to the volunteer, part-time position of Islip Town Historian of the Town of Islip. Mr. Munkenbeck is a native Long Islander who resides in West Sayville, NY. He earned a BS in Engineering from the United States Coast Guard Academy and an MA in Emergency and Disaster Management from American Public University. A Certified Lay Servant in the United Methodist Church, he is a fourth generation member of

New York’s volunteer fire service as an active member of the West Sayville Fire Department, Company H, The Fourteenth “Brooklyn” Regiment New York State Militia Society of New York Civil War History Group, The American Legion, The Industrial Archeology Society, United States Naval Institute, Society of Civil War Surgeons, Museum of Civil War Medicine, Sons of Union Veterans of the Civil War, National Model Railroad Association, and Firemen’s Association of the State of New York. In addition, he has produced numerous

programs, articles and studies on the Bible, local history, fire service training and history as well as railroad history and military history. “We are delighted the Town of Islip will be the beneficiary of George Munkenbeck’s expertise, vast knowledge and experience as a historian and thank him for volunteering to promote and preserve the Town of Islip’s rich history which extends more than three centuries,” said Islip Town Supervisor Angie Carpenter.

Students from Suffolk County Sheriff Vincent DeMarco’s Criminal Justice Class at Dowling College got a close up view of corrections when they toured the County’s Riverhead Jail this morning. The students met with the County Sheriff in his office and then were escorted through many of the jail’s housing areas, the holding pen, internal intelligence operations, and its specialized units

where correctional staff book and perform iris scans of incoming inmates. The Sheriff’s Office provides tours of the Riverhead Jail for more than a thousand high school and college students each year through its popular Youth Enlightenment Seminar (YES) initiative. The Jail also offers personal YES tours for parents to accompany their atrisk youth to give them a firsthand look at life

behind bars. “These tours give students a realistic view of corrections work and, from a different perspective, what daily life is like for an inmate at the County Jail. Miscellaneous Musings By: Jamie Lynn Ryan It’s been awhile since I’ve thrown together one of my random, rambling columns, touching on this, that and the other thing. Here goes… Baseball in October, that annual celebration of excellence that us Yankees fans have been fortunate to experience, well, annually for the most part. Congratulations to our New York neighbors, the Mets, for holding it together just long enough to make their longsuffering fans believe. Let’s hope the ride continues into the next round; but, either way, a proud showing. Football in October, well, that’s a different story entirely. The season is still

less than halfway over, and up until just a few weeks ago, tailgating could have been comfortably enjoyed in t-shirts and shorts. But no more. Break out the sweaters and scarves, boots and gloves – it’s gonna be a chilly few months ahead. Speaking of, have you made your Christmas shopping lists yet? What are you waiting for? At this rate, the bathing suits for next summer will be out on the racks in a matter of weeks. Forget Autumn – holiday season is upon us, with various countdowns marking the minutes until Halloween, Thanksgiving and Christmas. {For those inquiring readers, Buddy the Betta, who just celebrated his

eight-month birthday, is eagerly looking forward to his very ﬁrst holiday season. Perhaps I’ll decorate his tiny plant and string some lights on his bowl. He’s still patiently awaiting his sixmonth birthday shopping spree – something about wanting a “mini-castle” to sleep in. He’s also highly offended that no one noticed his addition to our staff box several weeks ago and is refusing to write another guest column, in protest.} Me, I’m looking forward to my own fall shopping spree. There’s something about the change of seasons and the transition of weather that calls for some new apparel, don’t you think? If only I had room to stuff one more thing in my closet…
