Just in time for Halloween, the Moriches Paquatuck Squaws’ 28th Annual Spooky Walk, will take place at Camp Pa-Qua-Tuck October 21st-22nd and 28th29th, from 7 to 9 p.m. Horror lurks around every corner during this 45-minute-long fright experience, considered the longestlasting haunted walk on Long Island. Leading thrill-seekers through four campground buildings and the woods surrounding Kaler’s Pond, this year’s walk is certain be a favorite among the thrill seekers. Upon completion of the Spooky Walk, guests are invited to enjoy hamburgers, hot dogs, roasted corn, hot pretzels, homemade candy apples and more. In addition, t-shirts, sweatshirts, toys and other Spooky Walk merchandise will be available for purchase. Admission to the event is $20 per person ($15 per person on October 21st), with all of the proceeds benefitting the camp’s mission to provide a safe and funfilled environment for children and young adults with special needs during their summer and fall respite sessions. For me, the selling point of a smartphone, initially, was to have the ability to text using a full keyboard, rather than one button at a time, letter by tedious letter. I was extremely late to the party, in that respect, having held on to my cherished flip phone for far longer than most in my age bracket. But once I upgraded, there was no going back. Library Lessons Sycamore Avenue Elementary School fifth-graders in Michael Konsevitch’s class recently learned about the infinite possibilities found at the Connetquot Public Library – a valuable resource located in the school’s backyard – during their first field trip of the year. Children’s librarian Christina Ladick instructed

the class on how to use the library’s computer system to locate books and informed them about the different sections in the building that can prove useful when working on school projects. Working with partners, the students then worked to complete a 10-step “Library Scavenger Hunt.” The list of tasks included

finding their favorite book through the computerbased catalog, finding a nonfiction book about their favorite animal, as well as locating an almanac in the reference section and a book written by Judy Blume in the Juvenile Fiction section. The students closed out their visit with a game of “Bingo.”

REPTILE WORLD - On Saturday, October 1st, Jungle Bob’s Reptile World visited the Connetquot Public Library for a fun-filled family program. All those who attended, were fortunate enough to encounter or interact with some of nature’s most remarkable creatures. From a giant African Pixie Frog, a Cuban rock iguana and an albino Burmese python, this well-crafted program by wildlife expert and conservationist “Jungle Bob” Smith gave patrons a rare opportunity to view reptiles from around the globe. During this interactive program, he shared his vast knowledge of raising and caring for reptiles in captivity and their importance in nature. Play for Peace

Together with the “Play for Peace” sponsors and volunteers, Deputy Presiding Officer Rob Calarco presented a check in the amount of $2,000 to Patchogue Early Head Start for community programming. The donation, which is the largest ever from the annual soccer tournament, will be used to support early education, computer literacy, ESL and nutrition

programs at the Patchogue Village center. The annual soccer tournament, now in its eighth year, was organized as a response to the Marcelo Lucero tragedy. The tournament has grown and brings the sports-loving community together to celebrate diversity, raise awareness, promote tolerance and raise money for local programs and organizations that

actively promote ethnic peace, unity and cultural tolerance. “I am delighted to present the proceeds of the tournament to Head Start,” stated Deputy Presiding Officer Calarco. “They are a vital asset in our community and we are proud of the good work they do with our youngest residents and their families.”

On September 14th, Tyreik S., a William Floyd UFSD student enrolled in Eastern Suffolk BOCES (ESBOCES) Facilities Maintenance Program at Ward Technical Center (WTC) in Riverhead, was recognized at a ceremony at the H. Lee Dennison building in Hauppauge with a Certificate of Achievement. Tyreik was employed over the summer for six weeks at WTC through the Department of Labor. He excelled as he assisted the custodians with summer projects. ESBOCES Head Custodian Arthur McDermott said, “I recommended Tyreik

to receive the recognition because of his outstanding effort, positive attitude, and overall excellence.” The Facilities Maintenance Program is a special career education course offering that provides practical experiences leading to entry-level skills. Students learn how to perform basic carpentry, plumbing, painting, and electrical skills as well as floor care, basic housekeeping, and other cleaning skills. Outdoor maintenance topics include proper lawn care, developing a maintenance schedule, trimming and pruning shrubbery and proper use

of various types of lawn mowing equipment. Facilities Maintenance Teacher Arthur Pagano said, “Tyreik has great attendance and is always eager to do whatever it takes to get a job done.” Every week students in the facilities maintenance program visit a Home Depot to learn what it’s like to be an employee and get on-the-job-training. Pagano said, “Tyreik is really getting career ready.” Tyreik’s goal is to apply at a local Home Depot and get a job with recommendations from his teacher and the Mr. McDermott.

INTRODUCING THE ENTIRELY NEW 2017 LINCOLN MKZ.

Budding studentscientist Connetquot High School senior Mit Patel had the chance to further his research skills this summer during a mentorship with Stony Brook University biochemistry scientists Dr. David Matus and Dr. R. Antonio Herrera. Working alongside the professionals, Mit assisted on a cutting-edge research project pertained to small organisms. “The reason we conducted this research was to form conclusive results on what we can learn about humans through examining these worms,” said Mit. “It was very interesting and enlightening to have the experience of conducting authentic research in a

real-world setting.” “Mit has a strong passion for scientific research,” said Secondary STEM Chairperson Dr. Mary Loesing. “In addition to his focus in the classroom, he was able to arrange this learning opportunity and gain valuable hands-on experience in an authentic lab setting, which is an attribute to his persistence and perseverance.” According to Mit, he would not be where he is today without the influence of science research teacher John Halloran. “Mr. Halloran has really been a contributing factor to why I’m here in the first place,” he said. “He really showed me that research is not what you think at first, and that there are a lot of

interesting and exciting things out there that if I have never been introduced to them, I would have been completely unaware of it.” While not conducting scientific research, Mit often contributes his academic efforts toward various clubs throughout the high school. He is currently the president of the Model UN Club, and also contributes to the volunteer-based organizations Interact Club and Habitat for Humanity. Mit is in the process of applying to colleges, and hopes to stay in the northeastern area of the country to study biochemistry.

Educational Adventure As an extension of their classroom lessons, fourthgrade students at Academy Street Elementary School in the Bayport-Blue Point School District were recently taken on an educational adventure into the rich historical backgrounds of Native American culture. The presentations were brought to the school courtesy of the Long Island-based “Journeys

into American Indian Territory.” Classes were divided amongst different parts of the school and students participated in a number of activities pertaining to different traditional Native American customs. In the school’s gymnasium, students were introduced to authentic cultural elements of Native American tribes, such as hunting and

gathering materials and traditional Iroquois drums. Additionally, presenter Richie Cornacchio spoke about how the tribes’ daily lives and gave students the opportunity to interact with genuine Iroquois and Algonquian artifacts. Throughout the daylong workshop, students were also able to partake in traditional Iroquois and Algonquian games and create clay pots.

Little Free Library

Sachem Public Library will be installing a Little Free Library in the Holtsville Ecology Center on Saturday, October 8th, at 9 a.m. A Little Free Library is a free book exchange location where users can take a book and/ or leave a book. The Little Free Library was built for Sachem as an Eagle Scout project by Raheem Bedward from Boy Scout Troop 25. The purpose of a Little Free Library is:

To promote literacy and the love of reading by building free book exchanges worldwide and to build a sense of community as we share skills, creativity and wisdom across generations. The Little Free Library collection will be curated by librarian Laura Saladino, a regular visitor to the Ecology Park. The Little Free Library will be a registered location on the LittleFreeLibrary.org

Connetquot Achievers Connetquot High School students Abigail Savit and Anthony D. Mannino have been recognized for their academic achievements by the 2017 National Merit Scholarship Corporation. Letters of commendation and commemorative certificates were presented to both students during a ceremony at the school on September 27th.

Abigail is one of 16,000 national semifinalists in the 62nd annual National Merit Scholarship program. These academically talented high school seniors have an opportunity to continue in the competition for 7,500 National Merit Scholarships worth about $33 million.

Anthony is one of 34,000 national commended students who were recognized for their exceptional academic promise. Both students were among 1.6 million scholars who entered the 2017 competition by taking the 2015 Preliminary SAT/ National Merit Scholarship Qualifying Test.

Working Toward Goals Edward J. Bosti Elementary School fifthgrade students in Sarah Wilson’s class in the Connetquot Central School District recently worked collectively to create a class support system designed to foster academic excellence and personal growth. After designing

individual academic goals, the students were paired with an “Accountabilibuddy,” a classmate who shared their similar goals. Throughout the school year, these pairs will help to keep each other on their goal path and provide necessary support when a roadblock

may arise. To help prepare for the joint partnership, students discussed what some of those obstacles might be. These included playing games electronically, watching TV or just having fun with their friends.

Deputy Presiding Officer Rob Calarco announced a major water quality initiative and partnership with local governments and St. Joseph’s College. The project, titled “Clean Lakes in Patchogue,” was awarded a $49,781 at the October 5th General Session of the Legislature. It was one of four Suffolk County Water Quality Protection and Restoration Program grants awarded to the Patchogue and East Patchogue area. Faculty and students at St. Joseph’s College began studying the stagnating lake in 2012. Led by Dr. Mohammed Afzal Rana, students have studied the degradation of water quality and led several lake “clean up” projects, removing debris ever year. The “Clean Lakes” project, sponsored by Suffolk County, the Town of Brookhaven and Patchogue Village, will

Barbering Teacher James Ricciardo and several graduates from the Eastern Suffolk BOCES Adult Education Barbering Program volunteered their time and provided shaves and haircuts to 69 men at the recent Stand Down for veterans in need at the Northport VA Medical Center. They serviced veterans who served in Desert Storm, Vietnam, and Afghanistan. The original Stand Down was used during the

Vietnam War to provide a safe retreat for units returning from combat operations. Today the purpose of Stand Down is for veterans in need to be afforded the opportunity to receive services in one location. They may enjoy a warm meal, receive items for personal hygiene, get information about medical and dental care, and enjoy the camaraderie of other veterans. Ricciardo said, “We participate in the Stand Down each year because

we want to give back. It is a way for us to serve those individuals who served our country. We hope when we give them a nice clean shave and a haircut, it will make the veterans feel better.” Hayden Sonner a 2015 graduate said, “This is my second year doing this and I think it’s a great way to give back. I’m very thankful for everything the men and women in the military have done to protect us.”

Long Island’s Ford Giant Sayville Ford has taken GIANT steps toward helping children in need. Their annual Mustang Show, held Sunday, September 18th, successfully raised over $4,000 for Make-A-Wish Foundation of Suffolk County. From 9 a.m. to 1 p.m. friends, family and mustang enthusiasts joined the dealership on Sunrise Highway to share their automotive pride for

a great cause. The event assisted the Make-A-Wish Foundation’s mission of granting wishes to local children with life threatening medical conditions. Since its inception, in 1983, the Suffolk Chapter has granted over 2,600 wishes to local children. Sayville Ford’s President, Melanie Spare-Oswalt, was proud to participate in this event. “The Mustang Show was a GIANT success!” she

explained, “I am so glad we are able to help an organization that does so much for the children in our community. We had a great time and are proud to help grant wishes for children in need.” This event not only helped a great cause but also celebrated a classic muscle car. With over 150 Mustang owners showcasing their vehicles, it was a fantastic turnout.
