Paula Abdul: Inside the Heart of a Pop Music Legend By Allison Kugel

On October 3rd, Paula Abdul hit the road on her North American tour; a tour that’s been more than twentyfive years in the making, since her 1992 Under My Spell tour which grossed $60 million in ticket sales (a mint by 1992 standards), yet also yielded some tragedy that almost sidelined the beloved performer forever. The world knows Paula as the plucky, iconic dancer and pop star turned American Idol judge, turned legacy performer. What people may not know is that this Grammy-winning legend had to climb a mountain of adversity, both physical and emotional, to dance again... Allison Kugel: You’ve said that when it comes to your choreography, you would often dream the dance steps up in your mind, and then run to the bathroom mirror and go through the steps that you’d already envisioned. Do you feel that when it comes to your choreography, it’s being channeled through you, like it’s coming from some higher source?

Allison Kugel: Is there anything else you feel you are still here to accomplish or experience, that has yet to be done? Paula Abdul: I really want to do some more producing, both in television

attention now, as I’ve gotten older, to those signs the universe gives me.

Allison Kugel: Let’s talk about your tour, Straight Up Paula!. Are you going to make each song’s choreography and costumes reminiscent of the original music videos, or will you change it up to reflect present day?

Paula Abdul: I definitely do. I feel that’s one of my biggest contributions. That’s what people herald me as doing, and it’s nice to know that. It’s nice to know that you can create and spark those kinds of dance crazes, but also that they can stand the test of time. A lot of dancers will say, “You’re American Music Awards dance opening numbers are ‘almanac.’” (Laughs) And artists that will say, “Man, I watched and learned everything that you ever did.” It’s wonderful to hear that.

Paula Abdul: It will be a little of both. I know that fans come to hear those songs, and they will, but I’m not doing a direct replication of those [music] videos. There is a nod to them, with a little bit of nostalgia. But for me, this is an opportunity to create my own vision of what I want to do in terms of interpreting the songs. I’m incorporating lots of technology and multimedia, and with some storytelling as well. I’m also going to cover some fun things, and some not so fun things, from my life in this show. It’s giving people a little bit more insight into who I am, and the career I’ve had. Allison Kugel: I ask this question of everyone, because I learn so much about people through this question… when you pray, who or what do you pray to? Paula Abdul: I believe in God, and I do pray to God. But I am also spiritual in the sense that I know I have angels around me, and I know to pay attention to the signs I get from the universe. I used to not pay attention to the signs that were right in front of me. I feel that I finally get it. I do pay

Allison Kugel: Do you see yourself as a pioneer with putting dance at the forefront of the pop music industry?

Allison Kugel: You came into the business as a dancer, and as a choreographer, and then you ventured into recording music. At that time, although you were extremely commercially successful, you had your share of critics. A lot of other artists at the time said, “She’s really a dancer, just trying to be a singer. She’s off-key, she should stick to choreography…” How did you handle that kind of criticism back then, and how do you handle it now? Paula Abdul: I feel like being in this business for over thirty years, you learn how to handle constructive criticism, and just plain old, simple criticism. What I have learned is that, although I can’t just say what the formula is for success, because success is different for everyone, I do know that a recipe for failure is trying to please everyone. You never will. For me, I’m an entertainer that happened to resonate with millions of people. I’m grateful for that. I’ve never claimed to be the best at anything. I’m a constant, perpetual student, and I love learning. I love improving upon weaknesses and nurturing the strengths; and being able to draw upon inspiration from others. Allison Kugel: Why do you think you resonated the way you did with my generation; those of us who were coming of age in the late eighties and into the early to mid-nineties? Paula Abdul: I think the throughline of most of my success is my heart, and I think that it connects with other people’s hearts, especially women. I have this profound love affair with women. I’ve never been a threat to women. I have been very inclusive, and always thought the

most beautiful thing you can do is to recognize beauty in someone else and celebrate that. Because I was always an accessible type of artist, people felt that they knew me, and they do know me. Allison Kugel: Do you have a tenyear dream, as in, “in ten years I’d like to be retired, living on the beach.”? Do you have a plan like that, or is this the dream, to keep singing and dancing for as long as you can? Paula Abdul: I feel extremely grateful that I’m able to do this. I was sidelined for many, many years because the last time I was on tour I was in a terrible accident in a sevenseater jet. One of the engines blew up and the right wing caught on fire, and we plummeted. Allison Kugel: I don’t think many people out there are aware that you went through this ordeal. Were you belted in when the plane began to plummet? Paula Abdul: I wasn’t wearing my seatbelt. I was getting ready to put my seatbelt on, but I never made it and I hit my head on the [ceiling] of the plane. It caused me to have paralysis on my right side, and I endured fifteen cervical spinal surgeries. I went through all of that, mostly, privately. Back then, we didn’t have tabloids like we do now. We didn’t have the extent of paparazzi or the [internet], so you were able to contain some information. I was so afraid of being counted out and looked at as damaged goods. The problem was that, at the time, I was. I ended up having to take almost seven years off to have all these different neuro-surgeons operating on me. So, the fact that at this stage of my life, I’m able to do this, is the biggest

gift ever! I am living, in many ways, my dream. But I also would love to branch out into other areas. And I get as much joy behind the scenes as I do from being out in front. Allison Kugel: What do you hope audiences will experience when they come out to see you on the Straight Up Paula! tour? Paula Abdul: I hope during the show they feel a celebration of fond memories of their time growing up with me. I also hope people get a chance to know me further, and get a better sense of who I am, with my whimsical ways and my sense of humor. It’s going to be a nod to everything that has inspired me since I was young, and celebrating my career, with the ups and the downs, and everything in between. Bellport’s Little Free Library On September 27th, Councilman Michael Loguercio was in Bellport to dedicate the newly installed Rotary Bus Stop’s “Little Free Library,” located at 107 South Country Road. The library, which is a “take a book, return a book” free book exchange program for all to enjoy, was built at the Boys and Girls Club in Bellport. Councilman Loguercio said, “Little Free Libraries are a wonderful way to promote reading for all ages, and I thank the Boys and Girls Club for helping to establish this one in Bellport. As a fellow Rotarian, I am very proud to be a part of this worthwhile project. I encourage residents to take advantage of the opportunity to share the joy of reading.”

My son pondered his options and with a mischievous grin, he said, “I dare you to make the nicest picture you’ve ever made in your life, and then rip it up!” In his nine year old mind, asking me to create something and then rip it to pieces was an ultimate triple dog dare. We’ve all seen how young kids react if they are building a tall tower with blocks and something or someone comes along and knocks it over. Forget about it! It’s DEFCON 1. I asked my son for a piece of white construction paper and

crayons. As we continued with dinner, I put crayons to paper, honing in on the most beautiful garden scene I could think up. I then colored my way to paradise. I meticulously drew the green grass and flowers; the blue sky and sun; the cascading birds flying by; I even did my best to draw a little country cottage. The picture was beautiful upon its completion. I held it up to show my son. “Well? What do you think? You like?” He was impressed and said, “Yeah mom, that’s actually a really nice picture. I love it.” I looked at the finished product, once again, to savor my hard work. Then, as requested, I tore it in half. No sooner did I do that, my son, dribbling food out of his mouth, screamed, “What’d you do that for?! Why’d you tear it up?!” He was horrified at the calm and swift nature of my action. I looked at him and said, “What do you mean? You dared me to make the nicest picture I’ve ever made and then tear it up. What’s the problem?” He couldn’t understand why or how I was able to do that so calmly. I looked at

it as a teachable moment (I live for those, in case you haven’t noticed). I explained that the joy was in the experience of creating the picture. The end result was merely icing on the cake; immaterial. If you live that way, no one can hurt you; no one can touch you. Alternatively, if you are married to a particular result, you’re vulnerable to disappointments and sadness when things don’t turn out exactly the way you want them to. You’re on a roller coaster ride dictated by your everchanging surroundings, as well as other people’s opinions. If you find your joy and fulfillment within, in the doing, outside results or conditions, unpredictable as they may be, will have less power to affect your state of well being. I said to my son, “I enjoyed thinking up the scenery for the picture. I delighted in choosing the colors I would use to create it and watching the picture come to life. I loved the experience of creating the picture. The end result was wonderful, but I don’t need it.”

The new surgical pavilion at Long Island Community Hospital offers many important features that are helpful to know about whether you plan to have surgery in the near future or not. A glimpse inside the inner workings of this ambulatory surgery center reveals the many benefits that are available for our local community, as we get to know your neighbors at Long Island Community Hospital. The new facility, located within the Knapp Center, was built around one guiding principle – to provide Ease and Convenience for Patients. A Level of Caring that Feels like Home “There is a level of caring that feels like home,” says Lori Ottaviano, RN, director of Perioperative Services at Long Island Community Hospital. “This is true for the patients and for the surgeons, alike.” “The care here is very personal,” shares Ottaviano. “The nurses view the patients as if they were their own family and it really shows,” noting that it’s also a very collaborative environment. “The staff care deeply about the patient and they care about each other. They work together to ensure that they are supporting the surgeons at the highest level and to support one another.” “Patients like that the process runs very smoothly. They go in one area, see their doctors, get their procedure and they go home. Our patient satisfaction scores have been very good,” she noted.

and complex cases in this outpatient setting. “In a freestanding ambulatory center, if there is a complication during surgery you would need to be transferred by ambulance to a hospital,” says Ottaviano. “Here, we are attached to the hospital. If for any reason you need a higher level of care you can be brought right over to the main facility through the hallways. It’s an added safety benefit. We offer the security of having surgery at the hospital, without having to go into the main hospital.” “Being a smaller community hospital, we’re closer to the patients than many hospitals,” says Ottaviano. “There are not a lot of layers. We can implement changes quickly and make adjustments based on patient feedback, surveys, etc. We’re always improving.” Modern ORs The pavilion houses four modern operating rooms, each of these large rooms was designed to be organized for today’s surgical procedures. Special features include laparoscopic equipment on booms that hang from the ceilings, instead of additional equipment cluttering the floors, for better organization and more available space for today’s modern technology. The facility is furnished with new instrumentation and advanced technology to ensure quality, safety and current standards of care. The rooms are equipped with superior quality imaging for minimally invasive procedures allowing surgeons greater magnification and higher precision levels. A new electronic instrument inventory system will assure that adequate supplies are always available.

An Ambulatory Surgery Center Attached to a Full-Service Hospital One of the most important features of the surgical pavilion is that it is attached to the hospital. Because of this added level of safety, surgeons at Long New Anesthesia Island Community Hospital Equipment are able to perform simple The pavilion also has

new anesthesia equipment allowing the hospital’s anesthesiologists to offer the most current technology and techniques for administering anesthesia for a variety of procedures. This includes special methods for pain management. At Long Island Community Hospital, anesthesiology and pharmacy teams have partnered on protocols to reduce the need for narcotics. And through their work, the hospital is competitive with what many of the larger hospital systems are offering to manage postoperative pain. The hospital offers multimodal pain management where a combination of techniques and medications are used effectively. Pain management teams focus on preventing pain before it occurs. Regional blocks are used in a variety of orthopedic procedures, such as shoulder, ankle hip, knee and podiatry surgery, resulting in less general anesthesia and a quicker recovery. Endoscopy A variety of endoscopic procedures are also offered in the pavilion to diagnose and treat gastrointestinal disorders. The hospital now offers the BRAVO™ reflux testing system, a new technology for diagnosing gastrointestinal reflux disease (GERD) and evaluating treatment effectiveness. A small capsule inserted into the distal esophagus measures the pH from reflux for 48-96 hours. The capsule transmits readings to a recording device, which is later interpreted by your gastroenterologist. Bariatric Surgery Patients in need of bariatric surgery for weight loss, can safely and conveniently have procedures at the surgical pavilion. Long Island Community Hospital

offers minimally invasive and traditional gastric bypass and gastric sleeve procedures, in this ideal setting with a staff that is highly sensitive. Patients opting for weight loss surgery frequently have co-existing conditions and are at higher risk for complications, thus being attached to the hospital is an added benefit. Because these surgeries tend to be more complex, patients having these procedures generally stay overnight and go home the next day. Lung Procedures Long Island Community Hospital’s thoracic surgeons will soon be performing lung procedures in the surgical pavilion, including biopsies and small tumor removals. A Focus on Organization The surgical pavilion team focuses on organization to ensure that each day runs smoothly, that cases are efficient and that surgeons have all the OR time and equipment that they need to provide optimal care for their patients. This attention to detail and process is making the surgeons’ experience very positive too. “Our surgeons are finding the experience in the surgical pavilion very satisfying, as well,” emphasizes Ottaviano. “We’ve made it a point to find out the surgical preferences of every surgeon that is performing cases here. We make it easy for them. Understanding what special equipment they need, the quantity and size of instruments and other materials, having it ready and being prepared for every case has made it a more efficient process and improved satisfaction among our surgeons. We’re supporting them and improving the overall quality of care, which is vital for our community.”

Advanced Training for Perioperative Nurses All surgical nurses at Long Island Community Hospital are now offered the Association of periOperative Registered Nurses (AORN) training. AORN is the professional organization that defines standardized clinical practices for perioperative professionals. The team’s goal is that by using these evidence-based practices, the consistency will lead to optimal clinical outcomes and improved quality of care for patients. Through this intensive training, which involves months of computer-based learning and mentoring in the O.R., the perioperative nursing staff at Long Island Community Hospital are learning specialized clinical skills and care practices, and raising the competency of all team members. While AORN training is more common in academic medical centers, Long Island Community Hospital is investing in its nurses to assure high quality care for the entire community. About Lori Ottaviano, RN, director of Perioperative Services Lori Ottaviano, RN, has been an operating room nurse for over 25 years. She joined Long Island Community Hospital (then known as Brookhaven Memorial Hospital Medical

Center) from Northwell where she had been director of Perioperative Services. Lori grew up on Long Island’s North Shore. After she married, she moved to Smithtown and when her children were young she went back to school to become a nurse. “I always knew that I liked taking care of people,” she shares. As she continued to raise her family, working as a medical/surgical floor nurse she went on for her master’s degree in science. In 1994, she began working in the operating room at Stony Brook University Hospital. “It was amazing,” she beams. “I love surgical nursing because you see the change right away. It’s a passion. As a circulating nurse, during the operation, you are the patient’s advocate. You do whatever you have to for that patient. Once you take on that responsibility–you own that.” Of the many accomplishments during her career, Lori has led process transition, culture change, managed teams towards new goals, and started robotic surgery and cardiothoracic surgery programs. “When I came to Long Island Community Hospital, at the beginning of 2017, we started by giving the team the opportunity to figure out how they could be more efficient and organized. They really took pride and ownership for improving our processes and our community is benefiting from that. There is a great deal of collaboration.” “We have a very nice group of people here – a great team. A Story of Classroom Inclusion At Seneca Middle School, a story of inclusion and togetherness inspired sixth-graders in Clarissa Reardon’s classes to foster a classroom culture that encompassed the entire school community. To begin the activity, students read the Amy June Bates book, The Big Umbrella, in which a child carries a big red umbrella on a rainy day down a city street, welcoming

countless characters of every size, shape and appearance to escape the rain under the umbrella. As the child continues on the trip, with many newfound friends, the umbrella continues to grow in size to fit more and more characters beneath it. The inclusive message resonated with students in Reardon’s classes, and they created puzzle pieces showcasing unique

character traits found in themselves on each piece. The pieces were then placed together under their very own big umbrella, demonstrating the idea that although different, they all fit together. Can You Save Fred? Fourth-grade students in Christine Kwiatkoski’s class at Frank P. Long Intermediate School in the South Country Central School District participated in a teambuilding activity called “Saving Fred.” The activity encouraged the students to work together and to demonstrate cooperation, understanding and critical thinking to achieve a common goal. “This activity is great to do in the beginning of the school year as a way of fostering the importance

of working together and listening to others’ ideas,” Ms. Kwiatkowski explained. During the activity, the students were given the following scenario and supplies. Fred, a gummy worm sailing on the Great South Bay, never learned to swim and refused to wear a life preserver. After his boat capsized, his life preserver became caught under the boat, and Fred could not reach it without falling into the water and drowning. Materials for the team-building activity

included gummy worms (Fred), gummy peach rings (life preservers), a plastic cup (the boat) and paper clips. The students were instructed to use up to four paper clips to save Fred without directly touching Fred, the boat or life preserver with their hands. Not only did the students learn to work together to solve a problem, they used their critical thinking skills to devise a solution.

Bayport-Blue Point AP Scholars The Bayport-Blue Point School District is proud to announce that eightysix Bayport-Blue Point High School students have earned Advanced Placement Scholar awards from the College Board. These honorees include both current students and members of the Class of 2018. Of the eighty-six total students, forty received the AP Scholar title for receiving a score of 3 or higher on three or more AP Exams. Eighteen students were given the title of AP Scholar with Honor, as they achieved an average score of at least 3.25 on

all of their AP Exams taken, and scores of 3 or higher on four or more of these exams. Additionally, twenty-eight students were awarded the title of AP Scholar with Distinction, as they achieved an average score of at least 3.5 on all exams taken with scores of 3 or higher on five or more of these exams. Four graduates in the Class of 2018, Frank Giacchetto, Ben Marantz, Benjamin Papa and Kevin Polanish, earned the high honor of National AP Scholar. This award is given to students who have earned a score of at least 4 on all AP Exams taken,

and scores of 4 or higher on eight or more of those exams. Students enrolled in the school’s offered AP courses are challenged academically with collegelevel material allowing them the opportunity to potentially earn college credit while still in high school. Bayport-Blue Point High School boasts a number of Advanced Placement courses for the students to enroll in, including, but not limited to, AP Computer Science, AP Government and Politics and AP Music Theory.

Empire State Grant The South Country Central School District, in conjunction with the Economic Opportunity Council of Suffolk, Inc. was awarded an Empire State Afterschool Program grant. Totaling $560,000 a year for four years, the grant will support an afterschool program at Bellport Middle School for 300 students in grades 6-8 and will run three hours a day for five days a week. The opening date of the program is projected for later this fall. In addition, 50 high school students will be provided afterschool programming through the Boys and Girls Club of the Bellport Area. “The district appreciates this generous grant, which will provide a much-needed service to students in our community and which will fill a gap for students and

their parents who need alternatives for afterschool hours,” Superintendent of Schools Dr. Joseph Giani stated. Economic Opportunity Council of Suffolk, Inc. Director of Youth and Adolescent Services Cynthia Amato explained that the grant will provide vocational, recreational and educational preventative programming. As an Economic Opportunity Council of Suffolk, Inc. partner, the Suffolk County Police Department will also provide education on violence prevention and the risks of drug use and addiction. In addition to a designated homework hour with tutors in core subjects, participants will select from a host of activities, including science,

technology, engineering and mathematics (STEM), cooking, dance, music/ audio club, music/DJ mix club, special events for students and families, and social-emotional and healthy living activities. Through the Leaders of the Future/STARS (Students Taking an Active Role in Society) clubs, participants will also learn leadership skills and take on community service projects. SAVVY Me program activities will also promote self-discovery and understanding. “With increased afterschool participation through enrollment, we aim to improve academics and attendance, as well as foster parental involvement,” Amato said.

Connetquot Top Student Musicians Based on their musical talents and teacher recommendations, sixteen Connetquot High School students have been recognized as premier musicians, by the New York State School Music Association, and invited to participate in this year’s All-County, All-State and All-National Music Festivals. Due to her incredible musical capabilities, Connetquot High School student, Anna Grottola, (soprano II) has been named an All-National student-musician. She will travel to Disney’s Coronado Springs Resort in Orlando,

Florida, to perform from November 25–28, alongside other talented musicians throughout the country. The district also congratulates students Robert Alvarado (mixed chorus), Gabrielle Cascio (soprano II), Darren Duttion (alto sax), Sara Mistler (treble), Gabrielle Perticone (mixed chorus) and Giovanni Santiago (mixed chorus) who have been named All-State student-musicians, and invited to participate in the 2018 NYSSMA All-State Conference to be held in Rochester, New York from November 29-December 2.

Sachem’s Hands-On Science States of matter were the topic of discussion during a recent hands-on science activity in Emily Cole’s fifth-grade class at Waverly Avenue Elementary School in the Sachem Central School District. As the experiment began, students carefully proceeded through each step of the scientific method, including creating a hypothesis, identifying the procedure

for the experiment, conducting the experiment and then recording data. The purpose of the experiment was to determine which state of matter the substance they created would be in. Mixing cornstarch, water and food coloring, the students created a substance called Oobleck that they then observed to determine the state of matter to be recorded in

their conclusion. After carefully observing the Oobleck, students determined that the substance could be found in either a solid or a liquid state. The Oobleck remained a solid when left in the bowl and transformed into a liquid once it was removed. At a later date, students will do further research on Oobleck and other substances that can be found in multiple states. Patchogue Village Donation On September 18th, sponsors of the Annual Play for Peace/Jugando Por La Paz Soccer Tournament visited Long Island Head Start in Patchogue Village to present Center Manager Lina Ortiz with a check in the amount of $1,000. The money comes from funds donated to the tournament from sponsors, including Gershow Recycling, TriTec Real Estate and others. Play for Peace brings together diverse nationalities within the

community for a full day of World Cup-style soccer, with a goal of promoting sports as a way for people from various backgrounds to find common ground. The tournament was first organized in 2009 through the office of thenLegislator Jack Eddington, in conjunction with the Patchogue-Medford Youth Soccer League. After Legislator Robert Calarco was elected in 2011, he carried on the tradition. Monies raised from

the event are donated to local organizations, like Long Island Head Start, which provides a creative curriculum to Patchogue students ages three to five. Head Start plans to use the donation to purchase two projectors for its smartboards. As a comprehensive learning environment respectful of all cultures, Long Island Head Start perfectly exemplifies the spirit of the event.
