Jeff Tempone, CEO of East Coast Refrigeration, will be receiving the “Above and Beyond Award” for his commitment to the fight against hunger, as exemplified by his generous donation of refrigeration units to Island Harvest’s Hauppauge Distribution Center. His contribution has helped Island Harvest store and distribute more fresh and healthy, perishable – foods, including produce, dairy products and juices. Greta Farrell, a student volunteer, will receive the “Linda Breitstone Award,” named for Island Harvest’s founder and its first president. The prestigious award recognizes an individual whose fervor, determination and hard work have made a positive difference in the lives of others.
Greta’s passion for service took hold at a young age. Upon reading a Newsday article highlighting the demand for food, the 11-year-old was shocked to learn that many Long Island families would not be able to enjoy special Thanksgiving dinners. Inspired to take action and make a difference, she wrote a letter to friends and raised enough money to buy at least 100 turkeys… in just two days. Greta is a founding member of Island Harvest’s Student Leadership Council, which empowers future leaders to increase awareness of issues related to hunger on Long Island. Tickets for the “Taste of the Harvest Celebration” are $295, which will help Island Harvest continue to fight hunger on Long Island. On Saturday, September 28th, representatives from the Bohemia Fire Department visited the Connetquot Public Library in anticipation of Fire Prevention Week beginning October 6th. The event gave children the opportunity to meet their local firefighters and understand the vital role they play in our community. Firefighters offered a demonstration of their safety equipment including the full protective gear which helps keep them safe during a fire. Families were given lifesaving information designed to assist them in
the event of an emergency. Crawling low to the ground to avoid smoke and dropping to the ground and rolling if clothing catches fire were reviewed during the presentation. Parents were encouraged to create an escape plan that included a meeting place once everyone was safely out of the house and to never re-enter the affected area. The firefighters recommended periodic fire drills, checking batteries on fire alarms, knowing emergency numbers and making sure that house numbers are visible for rescue personnel. For the children, the most exciting part of the
visit was seeing the fire truck up close. They were treated to a firsthand tour of the truck and the grand finale of shooting the fire hose. At the end of the demonstration, the thrilled participants received their honorary fire chief hats. Firefighters also planned visits to local schools. Sibling Bragging Rights
On a recent Saturday, the SJB Crew Team competed at the Brickyard 5000. The day started out like any other, with the first few races running smoothly. As the day wore on, the wind picked up and the already rough Hudson River turned into a series of veritable tsunamis. My race, the Varsity Eight, the last heat of the day, was running right on time. The course had been shortened, and I was to compete head to head with my little brother. As we paddled out, I knew I could not let him win for the sake of bragging rights. We knew the water was rough, but we also knew we were ready. As we spun the boat and got underway, the crack of the oars hitting
the water signaled the start of our very brief rivalry. In that moment, I wanted nothing more than to beat my brother. After the first few hundred meters, we were ahead and gaining, but after a few minutes, that all changed. As we slightly altered our course, a huge wave crashed over our port side, flooding the boat. We were still afloat, but the added water weight made every stroke less productive. With every stroke, my brother’s boat was gaining and we were taking on more water. Coming into the final two hundred meters, we were still in the lead, but barely. It was close, but we had them by about a boat length. Then, our Cox had us suddenly stop rowing.

From the back of the boat, I couldn’t make out what she was saying. One by one, I saw the boys in front of me jump out of the boat and into the Hudson. Panicked, I jumped out too. Our boat had sunk, and we were floating in the middle of one of the roughest waters in New York. As we watched my brother swiftly finish, we realized that we had lost. Sure, it was on mere luck, but he was the one toting the Gold Medal. Embarrassed, we boarded the Haverstraw Fire Department’s boat. I had lost, to my brother no less. Even though I was sad we didn’t finish, I was happy at least one of the Cianciulli boys was bringing home the gold for SJB Crew.

Forever An Original By: Jamie Lynn Ryan Albert Capraro, Lindenhurst High School Class of 1961 graduate, Bicentennial Designer of the Year for 1976 and personal designer of choice to none other than First Lady Betty Ford, passed away on October 8th, 2013 following a brief illness. I consider myself lucky to have made his acquaintance and privileged to have interviewed him for a profile for this very column several years ago. Following are excerpts from my original piece, published October 11th, 2006 ... Mr. Capraro’s path to success began to take shape way back in high school while walking the halls of Lindy. His influences ranged from several members of the art department to his beloved guidance counselor, all of whom nurtured his already-outstanding talent for both fashion and film, even going so far
as to attend the “fashion shows” and “movie premieres” he would put on at his home. After graduating from the prestigious Parsons School of Design, Mr. Capraro landed his first job working with a French designer on Park Avenue. He then moved on to a position with noted designer Joberie, headquartered on Seventh Avenue - Fashion Avenue. From there, he catapulted to the opportunity of a lifetime, working with Oscar de la Renta - his “mentor” - with whom he flourished for eight glorious years. Mr. Capraro eventually started up his own label, of which his first collection was quite a success. As he dryly observed, “I was an ‘overnight’ sensation after ten years.” However, it was exactly this achievement which provided the necessary steppingstone from which there would be no turning back. After reading a favorable review of his clothing line, First
Lady Betty Ford invited Mr. Capraro to a personal consultation at the White House. And the rest, as they say, is history. Through the years, he designed for a vast collection of women, including the likes of Julie Andrews, Marlo Thomas, Sophia Loren, Barbara Walters, Marissa Tomei and several of the Miss Americas. In 1976, he accomplished the “hat trick” of being the simultaneous designer-of-choice for Miss America 1976, First Lady Betty Ford and American Ambassador Ann Armstrong, helping to crown him with his most-cherished title of Bicentennial Designer of the Year for 1976. For a man whose designs now qualify as “vintage” on E-bay; for someone who used to regularly mingle with all walks of stars, he comes away from the whole experience with one sentiment that stands above the rest: “Ego doesn’t work.” As a result, Mr. Capraro
finds himself equally comfortable designing costumes for a Hicksville High School theatre production – which he has done several times – as he did while living the lavish life of limousines, champagne, starstudded galas and black-tie affairs ... all words which are still “music to (his) ears.” The man who was originally inspired to design by Princess Grace’s wedding gown and who recently donated the original mannequin and about twenty of his designs worn by the First Lady to the Gerald R. Ford Presidential Museum in Grand Rapids, Michigan, now lives by the simplest of mottos: “Pursue and persist ... Love what you’re doing.” What a lovely person. What outstanding accomplishments. And to think it began all those years ago in the halls of Lindy High School. His is a story that deserves to be shared. And admired by all.

This October, as we mark the 27th commemoration of National Domestic Violence Awareness Month, Suffolk County Sheriff Vincent F. DeMarco wants domestic violence victims to be aware of two potentially lifesaving victim notification programs offered by the Sheriff’s Office. The Statewide Automated Victim Information and Notification, or “SAVINNY”, allows domestic violence victims to register to be notified by phone, text message or e-mail when a Family Court Order of Protection has been served on their perpetrator. This service is available 24 hours a day, seven days a week, and is accessible through the Sheriff’s website at www. suffolksheriff.com. Another important tool is the New York Sheriffs’ Victim Hotline - VINE® (Victim Information and Notification Everyday) which allows crime
victims to register at www. vinelink.com or toll-free at 1.888.VINE.4.NY to be notified by phone or e-mail in the event of an offender’s release from jail or prison. This service is also available 24 hours a day, seven days a week. Sheriff DeMarco is urging residents to become informed about both initiatives. “Victims of domestic violence often live in fear for their own safety, and their children’s well-being. This is especially true when their perpetrator is being released from incarceration or being served with legal papers. Both SAVIN-NY and VINE are tools that can empower victims to make timely decisions to protect themselves and their loved ones,” stated Sheriff DeMarco. He added, “You may not need these services, but you may know someone who does. Help us get the word out to those in need.”

Zombie Run Set On November 2nd, participants will run for their lives to escape the zombie apocalypse at Brady Park in Massapequa Park to benefit Special Olympics New York! The rUNDEAD is a 5K run, in which runners start off with a flag belt and three flags representing their lifelines. Zombies will be stationed throughout the course attempting to take these one at a time. Once a runner loses all three flags, they are “dead” and the zombies have won. While the runner can still finish the race, they will not be eligible for awards or prizes. Runners can register in two different ways – the competitive “Fast Food” group or the noncompetitive “All You Can Eat” group. You can register online as an individual or a team in advance for $40 per person at www.therundead.org or sign up that day for $60.
Each runner will receive access to the course, race day festivities and an official rUNDEAD race day t-shirt. Those who do not wish to run have the option of registering to become a zombie! Each zombie will be transformed in our “Mob Tent” the morning of the event. Zombies have the option of registering as a “Hunter” who can chase
runners or a “Crawler” who can stumble, walk or shuffle after their prey to try and steal their flags. You can register as an individual or a team in advance for $40 or $60 day of to join the mob! Each zombie will receive their official transformation, a rUNDEAD race day t-shirt, participation in race day festivities and the thrill of the chase!
Race day registration will begin at 8:30 a.m., with the waves of the race starting at 10:30 a.m. Z100 is the official radio partner. Long Island Hearing will be raising awareness of Alzheimer’s disease, the importance of early diagnosis, the relationship between Alzheimer’s and hearing loss, and the importance of addressing hearing loss in people with Alzheimer’s. “There are many families within our community coping with Alzheimer’s and the challenges it presents,” says William Kent, Director of Long Island Hearing. “At Long Island Hearing we want to help ensure that the hearing health of those in our community with Alzheimer’s is appropriately managed. Hearing loss, when left unaddressed, can compound the difficulties that people with Alzheimer’s and their families already face. But in many cases, the appropriate use of hearing aids can benefit people with Alzheimer’s.” There is strong evidence that hearing impairment contributes to the progression of cognitive dysfunction in older adults. Unmanaged hearing loss can interrupt the cognitive processing of spoken language and sound, regardless of other coexisting conditions. But when an individual has both Alzheimer’s and hearing loss, many of the symptoms of hearing loss can interact with those common to Alzheimer’s, making the disease more difficult than it might be if the hearing loss had been addressed. Studies have shown that although a significantly higher percentage of people with Alzheimer’s disease may have hearing loss than their normally aging peers, they are much less likely to receive attention for their hearing needs. “A comprehensive hearing assessment

he Greater Patchogue Chamber of Commerce, one of the largest chambers in the metropolitan area, will host its Fall Festival on Saturday, October 26th, from 12 noon to 5 p.m. on Main Street in downtown Patchogue. The Chamber will also host Halloween Happenings on Thursday, October 31st, from 3 to 6 p.m. To celebrate the season, this year’s Fall Festival will include a petting zoo, pony rides, pumpkin decorating, face painting and vendors. A costume parade for children, 12 years-old and younger, will begin at 2 p.m. in front of Capitol One Plaza. A chili and chowder contest will also take place in conjunction with the Festival. Goodie bags will be available for the first 200 children in attendance. For Halloween Happenings, community

On September 4th, Sycamore Principal Mr. Stu Pollak, his eager kindergarten staff and PTA President Tina Garcia welcomed those new students, along with their parents, for a very
special morning of games, activities, friendship and, of course, snacks! Organized through the efforts of the Sycamore Parent-Teacher Association, Mrs Garcia and Mrs Fisher joined Mr. Pollak as he welcomed parents, and students who now make up the Connetquot graduating class of 2026! According to Mr. Pollak, “the students had the opportunity to interact with their classmates,
make some new friends, and share a snack on this beautiful Bohemia morning.” Mr. Pollak is grateful for the efforts of the PTA moms, his teachers and staff, for making this a special day for the excited youngsters. The new kindergartners and their parents walked away from the day’s experience with the names of some new friends, and looking forward to September 9th, their first ‘official’ day of school!

Ms. Susan White, Principal of Connetquot’s John Pearl Elementary School in Bohemia, joined students and staff in celebrating Patriot Day, on September 11th. On a beautifully sunny, cloudless morning, the students, dressed in their colorful red, white and blue outfits, recited the Pledge of Allegience, and sang patriotic songs around the school’s outdoor flagpole. Ms. Susan White joined the students in reciting the pledge as well as singing
attention, as well as the teachers, staff, members of the PTA and community, that took part in the annual Patriot Day Celebration As students begin the new school year, they had the opportunity to join together to remember the heroes of 9-11. Patriot Day is celebrated on September 11th as Americans also remember, and honor, those who perished in the terrorist attacks on that day in 2001.

Experiencing History as group activities. Students began the workshop by watching a video about Native Americans and crafting clay pots using traditional techniques and materials. Following the art project, the students visited a museum of artifacts that included animal pelts, musical instruments, traditional clothing, athletic equipment and hunting tools. They
also each took a turn grounding corn, touring a replica longhouse and playing Native American children’s games, which encouraged teamwork and honed survival skills. Before concluding the day, the fourth-graders had the chance to take part in a simulated election activity that reinforced the lessons they learned throughout the day.

Academy Street Elementary School fourth-graders had the chance to learn about the lives and culture of the first Americans during a hands-on workshop called Journey Into Native American Territory. The program, which served as a complement to the gradelevel’s curriculum, focused on the Eastern Woodlands people and included both visual presentations as well
the school song Together, We Can Reach Our Goals. Mrs. Verron, John Pearl Music teacher, led the students in singing patriotic songs they had rehearsed, while students from Mrs. Damore’s 5th grade class explained the meaning behind the celebration of Patriot Day. Ms. White talked to the students about patriotism and heroes, current and past, including the parents that love and protect them. Ms. White thanked the students for their

Feastival Honorees On September 19, The Rotary Club of Patchogue and the Fuoco family hosted the 44th Annual Fuoco Memorial Golf Feastival at Bellport Country Club. Proceeds from the tournament benefitted Camp Pa-Qua-Tuck, which serves special-needs children and young adults ages 6-21 with mental or physical disabilities. Throughout the history of this golf outing, over $1 million has been donated to support the camp. Over 250 people, including 156 golfers, took part in the outing to honor the Gallipoli family and the memory of Nick Gallipoli. Mr. Gallipoli came to the United States from Italy in 1954, and planted the roots for his family. In 1978, he purchased G & M Dege, Inc. and, with his children, grew it into the successful, family-run business that it is today. Nick instilled in his family the warmth, sincerity, respect and love and today, his four children continue to lead the family business. Mr. Gallipoli passed away in 1992. In addition, Katy Fuoco, daughter of Golf Chairman Steve Fuoco, premiered the commercial she produced for Camp Pa-Qua-Tuck. The campers who starred in the commercial - Mary Rodriguez, Eddie and Justine Bortell,
and Bokeem Gaither - were in attendance and were honored at the event as well, where they were joined by Camp Director Bridget Costello and Board President Kevin Spellman. Golfers who played were treated to the various “feastival stands”, which included an Italian kitchen
stand; pasta bar and wine tasting; Italian figs, grapes and fruits; clams on the half shell; the famous Italian Gourmet Deli; a homemade zeppoli and cannoli stand, and a BrickHouse Brewery micro-beer tasting tent. Every hole had a contest for “Longest Drive” or “Closest to the Pin”, as well as a “Hit-The-Green Challenge” on every par 3. In addition, there also was a prize for a hole-
in-one, courtesy of Brown’s Jeep Chrysler Dodge Jeep Ram Fiat. The round of golf was followed by a cocktail hour, a buffet dinner, a grand raffle, and silent auction. Camp Pa-Qua-Tuck also holds special meaning to the Fuoco family. Steve’s sister, Beth Ann, attended the camp between the ages of 3 and 21. While she attended the camp, their father regularly donated money to Camp Pa-Qua-Tuck. In 1969, the Fuoco family established its inaugural Fuoco Memorial Golf Festival. Camp Pa-Qua-Tuck is a resident summer camp serving children and young adults ages 6-21 with both physical and developmental special needs. Its mission is to help these children to achieve equality, dignity, and maximum independence through a safe and quality program of camping, recreation, and education. Throughout the program, campers participate in many activities, such as arts and crafts, talent shows, cookouts, swimming and boating.
