Eastern Suffolk BOCES Culinary Arts students in Lauren Battista’s Food Service Program at Bixhorn Technical Center made heart and ribbonshaped lollipops to sell and raise donations for autism awareness. The special career education students learned the steps to melt chocolate and add color so the end result would look like the work of a pro. It was important that the lollipops incorporate the autism colors of red, yellow, dark, and light blue. It was a multi-step process but the students took their time and created the exact colors they needed. The ribbon mold was specifically chosen so that the students could use it to make lollipops to raise money for other fundraisers that occur

throughout the school year. “The students learn to multi-task, use the skills they are learning in the classroom, and work as a team in food prep,” said Chef Battista. It’s not just about food tasting good, the students also work on presentation. “We always check and double check that they incorporate sanitation and safety measures in the kitchen,” said Chef Battista. Students Jackie B., Patchogue-Medford UFSD; Selen I., Middle Country CSD; Jesse James P., Central Islip UFSD; and Jason C., Katana L., and Michael D. from William Floyd UFSD, demonstrated attention to detail as they created picture-perfect lollipops and displayed their artistic talent when they iced the cookies.

Blank Page By: Jamie Lynn Ryan The bane of every writer’s existence. That infinite white space stretching before you, silently mocking its would-be-author’s lack of inspiration. And yet, there is always that potential that the following few keystrokes just might be the beginning of the next great American novel. Or not. Perhaps another day, on another page… I have always been one of those writers who wakes up with a thought, the makings of an entire essay, in fact, and then helplessly allows it to fade into the

oblivion of that dreamlike state in which we often begin our day. And, just like that, it’s gone, a mere trace of a concept that could have been. If only I had the good sense to jot down these fleeting thoughts. Instead, I sit here blank, staring at aforementioned blank page, feeling a sort of camaraderie with it. What shall we accomplish today? Do I sense a metaphor here, a comparison to each brand new day we are afforded, that 24hour stretch of limitless possibilities for adventure and accomplishment? Too easy. And yet, clearly not

simple enough for the average individual to take advantage of, yet another peculiarity of mankind. So many opportunities … so many fresh starts… so many blank pages…. Who’s to say when the moment will be seized, a la Dead Poets Society’s “carpe diem” mantra? Well, that’s a simple enough question. You. You are to say. I am to say. We are to say. The next time you are presented with a blank page, grab a pen and start writing. Or at least have the good sense to keep a notepad handy when you wake up.

The Connetquot Teachers Association (CTA) was once again well-represented at the 2015 Making Strides Against Breast Cancer Walk at the Brookhaven campus of Dowling College on a cool and overcast Sunday morning, October 4th. Coordinated by CTA members Joanna Zalewski, Lisa Manzo and CTA President Anthony Felicio, Jr., teachers, parents and students representing the CTA were among the estimated 10,000 walkers determined to help in the fight against breast cancer. Felicio expressed his gratitude to Joanna Zalewski and Lisa Manzo for, once again, organizing Connetquot’s support in the American Cancer

Society’s ‘Making Strides’ Breast Cancer Awareness Walk. “The clouds and wet grounds could not dampen our spirits as we walked the three miles for a great cause” said the CTA President. “In today’s society, all of us have been touched in some way by knowing someone who has cancer. By walking this past Sunday, it symbolizes that we are in this fight with those afflicted with this horrible disease. They are not alone. Thank you to all who participated and to those who made financial contributions.” Since 1993, close to 10 million walkers across America have raised almost $550 million to fight breast cancer through these Making Strides Walks. In

the past year, over one million walkers across the United States raised close to $70 million in the fight against breast cancer. Funding raised at these national ‘Walks’ is used to invest in cancer research to find, prevent, treat and cure the disease. The organization also provides free information and services to people facing breast cancer, such as transportation, lodging, wigs, support programs and financial assistance. Felicio praised the efforts of the American Cancer Society, and thanked the Connetquot community for it’s generous support in the fight against breast cancer.

College Recruitment Process Bayport-Blue Point School District’s athletic department will host national keynote speaker, Jack Renkens of Recruiting Realities for an informative event on the college athletic recruiting process on Monday, October 19th, at 7 pm. The event is free, open to the public and will take place in the auditorium at BayportBlue Point High School. Entitled, “It’s a Game... Know the Rules,” the workshop is designed to provide families of

student-athletes looking to get their degree and play at the college level with a clear look at the process. Included in the discussion will be the high expectations of athletes and parents when it comes to having sports pay for a college education, the role of an athletes high school coach, the impact of today’s social media and where parents fit into the process. Entering his 18th year touring the United States, Jack Renkens has

established himself as one of the top athletic/ motivational speakers in the nation, presenting at state athletic conferences, football clinics, college financial planning groups, sports camps and high schools from coast to coast. His speaking tour includes over 170 high schools each year, with enrollments from 250 to 2500 students. As a former high school/ college coach and athletic director, Jack has written 14 books on the recruiting process.

Traditional Lesson Journeys into American Indian Territory, a program that specializes in teaching students about Native American traditions, recently brought social studies to life for the fourth-grade students at Academy Street Elementary School.

During the workshop, presenters visited with the students to discuss the Eastern Woodlands Native Americans. The interactive program afforded students the chance to explore a museum of Native American artifacts, including clothing, tools

and a replica longhouse. The organization also conducted various activities including storytelling, clay workshops and lessons on government, music and dance, which provided students with first-hand experiences that reflected the depth of tribal history.
