Citizenship Challenge Woodhull Elementary School students in Karen McNulty’s early elementary class are challenging themselves to display acts of citizenship that are
noticed by others in the school. The class defines being a good school citizen as a person who exudes self-control, respect,
responsibility, honesty, politeness, kindness and helpfulness. Students “caught” displaying these attributes by someone in the building, have their
actions praised on a giant board in the classroom. Students can earn bonus points or fines for their actions and redeem their points for special activities
during the year. The project ties into social studies content from the class’ “Who We Are” curriculum unit. This is the first schoolwide
unit in the International Baccalaureate Programinspired curriculum, which focuses on laws, the constitution and American citizenship.
Special Homecoming college friend who participated in an upstate Honor Flight.” Gallo wanted to get involved, applied to become a volunteer guardian and made the $400 donation that affords the opportunities for vets. As a social studies teacher in the ESBOCES Centereach Academic Center, Gallo admitted that he holds a special place in his heart for veterans who served and sacrificed for our freedoms, but especially for the “Greatest Generation” who fought in the Second World War. This self-proclaimed World War II buff is a young man of action who also volunteers as an Assistant Varsity Football Coach for the Sayville Football program where he was once a team member. Although Gallo was not picked for the Honor Flight Long Island in May of 2016, he was pleased when he was called in August to serve for the Fall flight that was held in late September.
Upon receiving the call, the social studies teacher and volunteer coach had an idea. “I wanted to get my students and the Sayville Football players involved,” Gallo explained. He thought it would be a good way to acquaint them with someone who epitomized “the true essence of teamwork” through commitment in military service. “Another big reason that I did this was to spread the awareness of this great program and to hope that
more people sign up to volunteer.” The Honor Flight from MacArthur Airport gave both Douglas Cox, a former U.S. Navy aeronautical engineer who was a Navel Air Transporter in the Pacific theatre, and Zach Gallo a meaningful, daylong visit. They were met with a motorcade of volunteers and transported to the WWII Memorial, Arlington National Cemetery, the Tomb of the Unknown Soldier and the famous Iwo Jima Memorial. During the “mail-call” portion of the day for veterans in attendance, Mr. Cox received letters from Zach Gallo’s Centereach students who thanked him for his service to our country. But the warm reception the two travelers met upon their return to MacArthur airport that night was unforgettable. The Honor Flight homecoming was attended by members of the Sayville Varsity Football team, who presented Mr. Cox with a football autographed by the 2016 team at their game the day before. Gallo was deeply moved by those Sayville Varsity Football team members who made the welcome home truly extraordinary. “It was an emotional experience for all of us,” Gallo said. “Almost the entire team was there. I was happy that my position as a coach and a teacher could influence them and help them understand the sacrifices of others. It was a wonderful experience for both my athletes and students to be a part of this special day.” When Sayville Varsity Football Coach Rob Hoss had learned about this homecoming, he expressed his great pride in his volunteer coach and his football team. “This act of patriotism and respect for our service men and women by coach Gallo and the boys makes me proud to be their coach. These selfless acts of kindness and goodwill should not go unnoticed nor should the sacrifice of our brave servicemen and women. Sayville Schools are building great kids of character!”

Ninety-two year-old Douglas Cox, a World War II veteran from Merrick, Long Island, was given a oncein-a-lifetime opportunity. Thanks to the Honor Flight program and the assistance of his specially selected Guardian, Zach Gallo from Sayville, Cox was escorted to Washington D.C. to visit the World War II Memorial that honors “The Greatest Generation.” It was this veteran’s first-time seeing the granite and bronze monument - installed on the National Mall on May 29th, 2004 dedicated to all who served and sacrificed during the Second Great War. Without assistance, Douglas Cox would not have been able to journey to the memorial. It’s been over seventy years since that war ended, and many of the surviving veterans from World War II have become too elderly, infirmed, or have limited resources to make the trip to Washington D.C. Introducing Honor Flight, which, according to the website, is “a nonprofit organization created solely to honor America’s veterans for all their sacrifices, flies our nation’s heroes to Washington, DC to visit and reflect at their memorials. It is the intention ofHonor Flight Long Island to honor as many of these selfless ‘ordinary people who saved the world’ as we can by providing them a FREE trip to visit their memorial.” The website also explains how it accomplishes its mission: “Honor Flight Long Island operates on donations from local and regional organizations and individuals from across Long Island. We are taking WWII Veterans who have NOT seen their memorial. The flights, deluxe tour bus service, tee shirts, and meals, etc. are FREE to our veterans. Top priority is given to WWII Veterans and only those who have NOT seen their memorial. We will continue to do this so long as funds, veterans and volunteers are available.” “I learned about the Honor Flight program,” said Sayville class of 2007 alumnus Zach Gallo, “from a

reading competition for students grades 6-9. Under the coaching of teen librarian Angela Breslin, the team achieved a fourthplace finish for the afternoon session category and were tied for ninth-place overall out of 42 teams. Scott Maskin, CEO of the Ronkonkoma-based SUNation Solar Systems, was recognized as a Community Member of Excellence and presented with a certificate for his numerous contributions to the community. He serves on the Board of Directors of the Girl Scouts of Suffolk County and also fosters dogs through Last Chance Animal Rescue. Mr. Maskin is the father to two Connetquot High School graduates, Rachel and Allison, and is a regular supporter of the district’s schools. Additionally, Dr. Lynda Adams was honored for recently earning a doctorate degree. A select group of students were on hand to give a brief speech thanking Dr. Adams for all that she does for the Connetquot School District before each offered their personal congratulations.

The Connetquot Board of Education Planning Session held on September 27th was full of recognitions and student accomplishments. Take Heart With Tea An apple a day may keep the doctor away, but a recent study found drinking tea might keep the cardiologist at bay.
The USDA reported that men and women who drank black tea for three weeks reduced their total and bad
cholesterol (LDL) levels by an average of 7.5 percent. Researchers concluded that drinking tea may reduce the
risk of coronary heart disease. Antioxidants called flavonoids, found in both green and black teas, are thought to
be potent weapons in the fight against heart disease. That news may be especially important
for women, given that heart disease kills more women than all forms of cancer combined including breast cancer.

Signs. They’re everywhere. You need only to look, and take notice. A visit from a butterfly to commemorate a birthday… the timely appearance of a nest of robin’s eggs… a rainbow arching over the sky… There are those who simply appreciate these occurrences as a token of nature at its finest and leave it at that. And then there are those who see it as representative of something far deeper, and more spiritual in nature. Sure, anything can be made to “fit,” if you are so inclined; but there are certain phenomena, if you will, that simply cannot be denied and leave you shaking your head in wonderment. Case in point: I recently found myself driving on Sunrise Highway, as I often
do, when I happened to focus in on the license plate of the vehicle in front of me. It read “RIP PAL.” For those who may not know, I recently lost my grandfather – my “Pal” – as I fondly called him, earlier this year. The odds of that particular combination of letters, traveling in front of me at that particular time, leading up to what would have been his 90th birthday this month… it was pretty mind blowing at the time. As soon as I was stationary, I quickly texted my mom to tell her about my encounter, still incredulous at the coincidence. No sooner did I get out of the car to head in to pick up dinner, when I was met with another “sign.” As I stood on line waiting to be helped, my eyes fell on the nametag of the girl behind the counter, one I had noticed there countless times
SEALs. An additional focus will be to continue the commitment to support the Sea Cadets program by utilizing a portion of the museum as a training facility. This museum will be the first of its kind in the entire northeast and only the third such museum in the country. “The Murphy family is thrilled with the first ever Navy SEAL Museum

Playground Unveiled Suffolk County Legislator Bill Lindsay and Suffolk County Executive Steve Bellone were on hand to dedicate and officially name the newly constructed Cherry Avenue Handicapped Accessible Playground, the Betty Whitehouse Playground. The 77 foot by 65 foot play structure that includes several slides, ramps, and recreational equipment, sits adjacent to the Baymen Soccer Fields owned by Islip Town on Cherry Avenue. Alongside members of the Whitehouse family, the naming dedication ceremony was also attended by Town of Islip Councilwoman Kate Mullen, Suffolk County Parks Commissioner Phil Berdolt, Suffolk County Office for People with Disabilities Director Frank Krochinski, Sayville Chamber of Commerce President, Rob Blair and Past Presidents, John Cox and Kay Cameron and over 35 residents and business owners. “It was an honor to join the Whitehouse family to officially open this inclusive playground in West Sayville,” said Legis. Bill Lindsay. “Mrs. Whitehouse was first and foremost a wonderful person who made a tremendous impact on our community as a teacher, scientist, civic leader, and volunteer. This park is emblematic of the impact that she made on the children and students of our area and will be an everlasting tribute to her dedication to advancing the lives of all residents.” Betty Whitehouse was a polarizing force in the Sayville community as a community leader who feverously volunteered her time to make her community a better place for all. As a child Betty had summered in Sayville where she met her future husband John, a resident of the Cottages of St. Ann’s. She married John in July 1944 immediately prior to his deployment to the Western Pacific as a pilot. In June 1940 Betty graduated high school from Berkeley Institute in Brooklyn. She then graduated from
New York University with a degree in physical education in June 1944 and furthered her education with a Master’s degree in science education from Adelphi University. Betty was a pioneer ahead of her time, not only earning an advanced degree in science education, but perpetually promoting science, technology, and math programs to young men and women throughout her life as a teacher and author. In 1957 Betty began her teaching career in Sayville as a Middle School Science teacher at the old Jr. High School on Greene Ave. In 1969 she helped to acquire
Planetarium Title III funds to build a planetarium and develop an astronomy curriculum from Kindergarten to 12th grade. Making her mark on the community didn’t just end there, for many years she also presented very popular free planetarium programs during the holiday season and continued on to publish a series of children’s books on astronomy. After her retirement in 1982, Betty continued to donate her time and resources to the community as a civic leader with Boy and Girl Scout troops, and youth sailing clubs, the Sayville Food Pantry, Sayville Library, Sayville Common Ground, Sayville Garden Club, and
St. Ann’s Church. She was an original participant in the now 81 year old local Wet Pants Sailing Association and a longtime member and past President of the Sayville Rotary Club where she successfully converted Rotary Park into The Common Ground and saved the Shoreham Beach property and converted it into an Islip Town Park. “Betty Whitehouse was a respected educator and a pillar in the Sayville community,” said Suffolk County Executive Steve Bellone. “She devoted her time to teaching and inspiring students and community members alike. Betty leaves behind an incredible legacy as a scientist, author and educator who was way ahead of her time. It is only fitting that this playground, which is the first handicapped accessible playground in Sayville, is dedicated to such an amazing woman.” Kay Cameron, former Greater Sayville Chamber of Commerce President and current Board Member rallied the many communities groups that Betty founded and participated in to raise funds to plant a memorial stone in the Playground which reads, “We dedicate this park to the memory of Betty Whitehouse. Humanitarian, Astronomer, and Teacher. Betty was tireless in her generosity to Sayville’s children and its citizens. Author, Civic Leader, and Volunteer to almost every Sayville Civic Group. Betty was first a wife, loving mother, and grandmother who made a lasting impact on our community. She is missed. Think of her as you gaze up towards the night sky.” Betty is survived by her children John (“Jack”) and his wife Elaine, Helen Bannon and husband Peter, Elizabeth Manley and husband Bill, James and wife Carrie, George and wife Alyssa, 12 grandchildren, and three greatgrandchildren, one of whom, Jack, was in attendance for the dedication ceremony.
