Let me begin by stating that I have not been a college student for the better part of the last 13 years. That said, I still find myself enjoying some of the perks associated with being an alumna of one of our fine local institutions. It takes a bit of the sting out of being asked for ID when purchasing tickets to R-rated movies. Last year, I received a press invite for an intimate gathering of students at a Q&A with none other than Long Island’s own Billy Joel. Casual conversation, a few funny anecdotes, a verse from a song or two while seated at the piano - it was every fan’s dream to be in that audience of several hundred. The press, as it turned out, was asked to leave after the first 15 minutes of the event, to avoid the flash photography, videography and distraction often associated with a throng of media lined up in the back.
As cameramen and reporters were ushered out one by one, I received no more than a passing glance from the administrators in charge of “clearing” the area. Smartphone in hand, I tried to look as inconspicuous as possible until they had all gone. Once the coast was clear, I surveyed the remaining students to see them eagerly snapping photos and recording bits and pieces. Since no one had instructed that this was not allowed, I followed suit. The perks of being a “student,” indeed, if only for one day. This past week, I noticed a similar event upcoming, featuring former President Bill Clinton. Tickets ranged into the hundreds of dollars; but, in fine print, I noticed a line about complimentary tickets being available to students. Intrigued, I contacted the school to inquire if, perhaps, I might pass for a student once
more. I was told that, yes, this would be possible, and I could even be permitted in the press box as well. Once there, I determined that the so-called “press” was actually standing behind the row where I was to be seated, crammed in among the cameras on tripods, wiring and soundboards. About five minutes into the speaking engagement, I assessed the situation and gave up my special access in favor of a (somewhat) comfier seat down below. Once again, youth prevailed, granting me a better view of the action with none of the chaos. People have always said to me, you just wait - in a few years, you’ll be longing for the days when people thought you were so much younger… it’s a compliment, enjoy it while it lasts… Years later, I have to say, I’m beginning to see their point.

A Day in the Life Woodhull Elementary School fourth- through sixth-grade students learned more about their unique island and school surroundings as they contributed to the very first “Day in the Life of Fire Island” ecology project on September 29th. Assisted by ranger Sam Durbin of National Parks Service, Adelphi professor of environmental studies Ruth Coffey, Fire Island School Superintendent of Schools Loretta Ferraro, BOCES technology specialist Deborah Gerken and Woodhull Intermediate class teacher Gabrielle Donovan, the students learned how to
collect and test samples of water and earth along the shores of Ocean Beach. The information will help specialists determine the health of the aquatic ecosystem and the biodiversity of Fire Island. They examined the physical and chemical aspects of the water, such as salinity, the amount of sediments, nitrates, phosphates, and oxygen levels in the water, and also conducted biodiversity inventories of the flora and fauna in and around the shorelines. The Fire Island students were not alone in their work as students from Bay Shore High School performed
similar work near the Fire Island Lighthouse, and students from Longwood Junior High School worked near the Smith Point Wilderness Center. Together some 70 students and teachers studied the water source that spanned the length of Fire Island. Since 2011, annual “A Day in the Life” events involving students have been jointly coordinated for various Long Island aquatic ecosystems by the Central Pine Barrens Commission, the Suffolk County Water Authority, Brookhaven National Lab, and the New York State Department of Energy Conservation.

Commended Students Nine Sachem Central School District seniors have been named Commended Students in the 2018 National Merit Scholarship Program. At the end of September, about 34,000 of the approximately 50,000 highest scorers were chosen for this honor based
On September 30th, Supervisor Ed Romaine honored Boy Scout Matvey Morris from Troop 270 during the Eagle Scout Court of Honor ceremony held at Our Lady of Mount Carmel RC Church in Patchogue. Matvey’s Eagle Scout project was planting two rows of shade trees outside the Mount Carmel parish chapel. “Congratulations to
Matvey for completing his project and achieving the rank of Eagle Scout,” said Supervisor Romaine. “Scouts like Matvey are the leaders of tomorrow, and from what I can see of this outstanding young man, I say that we’ll be in good hands.” Since the award was presented in 1912, no more than four percent of all Scouts have attained

AP Scholars The Bayport-Blue Point School District is proud to announce that 97 Bayport-Blue Point High School students have earned Advanced Placement Scholar awards from the College Board. These honorees include both current students and members of the Class of 2017. Of the 97 total students, 47 received the AP Scholar title for receiving a score of 3 or higher on three or more AP Exams. Twenty students were given the title of AP Scholar with
Honor, as they achieved an average score of at least 3.25 on all of their AP Exams taken, and scores of 3 or higher on four or more of these exams. Additionally, 26 students were awarded the title of AP Scholar of with Distinction, as they achieved an average score of at least 3.5 on all exams taken with scores of 3 or higher on five or more of these exams. Four graduates in the Class of 2017, Christopher Bartolini, Olivia Ingrassia, Allyson Koehler and Philip Tubiolo, received the
Award of Excellence high honor of National AP Scholar. This award is given to students who have earned a score of at least 4 on all AP Exams taken, and scores of 4 or higher on eight or more of those exams. Students enrolled in the school’s offered AP courses are challenged academically with collegelevel material allowing them the opportunity to potentially earn college credit while still in high school.
Sachem High School East senior Mark Benesh has received the Award of Excellence from the National Academy of Future Scientists and Technologists. As a recipient of this
award, Mark was chosen to attend the Congress of Future Science and Technology Leaders as a delegate representing High School East. Selected students are recommended by their teacher or
guidance counselor for leadership ability, academic achievement and dedication to science and technology while also holding a GPA of 3.5 or above. The three-day conference, held in Lowell, Massachusetts, includes a collection of seminars lead by Nobel Prize winners and industry-leading inventors. The annual conference draws more than 1,000 students from across the country. Mark plans to further his science and technology knowledge by studying earth science and physics in college, with the hope of becoming a science educator himself. Waverly Avenue Elementary students in the Sachem Central School District practiced basic engineering principles as they worked together to construct balloon-powered cars during an interactive STEAM lesson. In the school’s new STEAM room, students from Cathy Juliano’s fourth-grade class began
collaborating on designs to create a functioning self-propelled balloon car. Supplied with foam balls, straws, wooden rods, tape, rubber bands, a water bottle and a balloon, students began to assemble their cars. Assisted by art teacher Susan Kinsey and Librarian Luann Cronin, the fourth-graders
applied problem-solving techniques throughout the construction process to overcome design obstacles and effectively complete their vehicles. At the conclusion of the lesson, the student groups came together to test their balloon-powered cars and collectively discussed solutions to improve their vehicles.

Bouncing Back Respect In keeping with this year’s theme of “One World, One Dream,” students at Connetquot Central School District’s John Pearl Elementary School were recently treated to a highly engaging and equally informative presentation from former Harlem Globetrotter’s athlete Corey the Dribbler about perseverance and the importance of respect. Corey’s presentation began with a demonstration of impressive basketball dribbling skills, as he started with one ball and slowly worked his way up to showcasing his current
world record of dribbling six balls simultaneously. He encouraged the students to never give up on their goals, to continue to practice in order to improve upon their skills and to always remember to show respect toward others. Additionally, 10 brave volunteers were invited up to the front of the gymnasium to join him in a game of “You’ve Been Tricked,” which had everyone in attendance highly entertained. Throughout the game, Corey would attempt to trick the contestants into
dropping the basketball after he had passed it to them in a dazzling fashion. John Pearl Elementary School physical education teacher Nick Sturtz joined the students as well, and was able to demonstrate his quick reflexes and impressive ball spinning skills. As an added reminder of his messages, Corey the Dribbler left behind autographed posters to be handed out to those students who showed respect toward one another in the classroom.
Using Brain Power Staff and students of Connetquot Central School District’s Edith L. Slocum Elementary School recently tested their knowledge during the Hollyrock Brain Challenge game show. Held in the school gymnasium, the show’s enthusiastic emcee
and his “referee” divided the students into teams and assigned their teachers as team captains to join in on the fun. The game show emcee used a timer to challenge the students to recognize numbers, letters, and answer grade-level
history, math and spelling questions. Additionally, students were challenged to demonstrate their ability to dance, use a hula hoop and test their strength in a friendly “tug of war” competition.

Grant Money Awarded Deputy Presiding Officer Rob Calarco has secured $68,000 for downtown revitalization projects in Patchogue and Medford. On Tuesday, October 3rd the Suffolk County Legislature voted unanimously to approve Phase XV of the Suffolk County Downtown Revitalization Program. The $600,000 in funding will be used to support projects in downtown areas across Suffolk County. $58,000 will be used to build a new walkway in Patchogue to connect Main Street with Terry Street. In Medford, $10,000 will be used to support the second phase of the new pavilion at Medford Memorial Park. Applications were reviewed by the Downtown Citizens Advisory Panel and ranked based on a scoring system, which includes points for leveraging of additional funds, economic impact, the reasonable expectation of completion, and the projects proximity to the downtown. The applications were submitted by The Greater Patchogue Chamber of Commerce and The Medford Taxpayers and Civic Association. The walkway project in Patchogue will connect the Roe Walkway, off of
Main Street, with Art Space on Terry Street. The walk way will extend through the Terry Street parking lot and will increase pedestrian safety in the increasingly busy downtown Patchogue area. Art Space has been at the heart of the expanding arts community in Patchogue and it has made Terry Street a top destination for residents and visitors to Patchogue Village. “This money will improve pedestrian safety and increase access to Terry Street, which has become the center of the vibrant arts community in Patchogue,” said Calarco. “Once again, Legislator Calarco has come through for Patchogue,” said David Kennedy, Executive Director of the Greater Patchogue Chamber of Commerce. “The funds for this new walkway will be vital to connecting our bustling Main Street with our growing Arts District on Terry Street that is centered around the Art Space complex. We are very grateful to Legislator Calarco for his efforts in making this happen.” Medford Memorial Park has become the center of the Medford community in recent years. The park
is the home of many popular community events like the Medford Concert Series, which Calarco has sponsored for the last six years, and the Medford Christmas Tree Lighting. The new pavilion will save money on future concert series events and will allow more community events to be held in the park. Calarco secured over $8,000 during Phase XIV of the Suffolk County Downtown Revitalization Program to begin the construction process. The additional $10,000 will help to complete the project. “From concerts to parades to holiday events, I am very proud to say that we have made Medford Memorial Park into the center of the Medford community,” said Calarco. “The new pavilion will provide another great resource for our community.” “The Medford community appreciates the support of Legislator Calarco’s office,” said Nerina Sperl, Treasurer of the Medford Taxpayers and Civic Association. “These grants will be used to build a bandstand which will greatly enhance the park.”

Bubba’s Provides Backpacks
Tim Henriksen, owner of Bubba’s Burrito Bar, and his staff, were recognized by Islip Town Supervisor Angie Carpenter and members of the Islip Town Board for their commitment to the children of the community. Tim purchased 100 new backpacks for distribution to Islip school students in need. Bubba’s staff members donated their
tips over the course of a weekend, and those dollars were used to fund the supplies needed for the backpacks. The effort was in response to the Town of Islip’s School Supply Drive, an annual drive conducted by the Town of Islip Youth Bureau. Many businesses throughout Islip participated in the event, demonstrating the true
spirit of community in the Town. “Tim’s involvement in the Youth Bureau’s School Supply Drive truly exemplifies corporate giving and giving back to the community. Together, Tim and Bubba’s staff helped children start the school year proudly, with new, fully stocked backpacks,” said Supervisor Angie Carpenter.
