Choosing The Right College
No matter how you slice it, picking a college is the culmination of your high school career. As a senior, the pressure associated with selecting where I will spend the next four years of my life is truly right around the corner. I’m almost done with all of my tests, essays and applications, but even if I receive that acceptance letter in the mail, how do I know where I truly want to attend? After acceptances, denials and waitlists, a student is still left with the daunting task of finding out which college truly fits him or her. There are many factors that play into choosing
where you would be the most happy. Are you an athlete? A study freak? A party animal? Countless variables can have an impact on both your social and psychological well being. Before you enroll in that Ivy League school, take a look around, because you may feel the urge to select a school that actually wants you. For instance, if a school of lesser prestige is offering you a scholarship, you might feel the urge to go there instead of a top tier college. Before you enroll anywhere, make it a point to visit! If you can, check out the prospective
college because, for all you know, you could hate it. If visiting is not an option, at least talk with a current student or alumni. No one can give you more insight than someone who is already in that situation. Attend a College Night! On October 2nd, St. John’s hosted its annual College Fair, with nearly 200 present. Showing up to one of these not only gives you a broader glance at many universities, but the up-close and personal time with an Admissions officer can be priceless. Feel it out, because this decision is undoubtably the most important one you will make thus far.

Calling all Long Island educators! The deadline to submit an application for NEFCU’s “Funding Your Ideas” (FYI) Teacher Grant Program is fast approaching. Educators across Long Island are encouraged to apply by October 31st for this grant that supports innovative classroom projects designed to enhance the student learning experience. NEFCU, a leading credit union serving all Long Island’s banking needs, has already awarded nearly $100,000 in grant money since the program began in 2004. “In our 75 year history, NEFCU has always valued the local educators that have helped to inspire our future leaders,” said Valerie Garguilo, Vice President of Marketing & Community Relations for NEFCU. “The FYI Teacher Grant Program provides
Brookhaven Supervisor Ed Romaine recently spoke with students from the Patchogue-Medford School District during a handson science exploration of the Carmans River. Students and teachers from six schools in five school districts located in the Central Pine Barrens participated in the event “The Carmans River is one of our most pristine and important waterways in the Town of Brookhaven,” said Supervisor Romaine. “That’s’ why I have worked with the Town Board to implement a plan to protect and preserve this environmental gem for generations to come. This event helped show students the beauty of this river, and the importance of saving
what’s left.” During this year’s program, students compared last year’s data to this year’s to determine whether or not Super Storm Sandy and the new “old” inlet breach may have affected local river systems. Students looked at many possible effects, including; salinity, turbidity, erosion, biodiversity, downed debris and compare them to last year’s data to determine how Super Storm Sandy changed the river. The event was sponsored by the Central Pine Barrens Joint Planning and Policy Commission, Brookhaven National Laboratory’s Portal to Discovery and the New York State Department of Environmental

Commuting. Whether by train, plane or automobile, it has the potential to be tedious, inconvenient and highly frustrating. For many years, I was fortunate to have a very short drive to work, bypassing Long Island’s fine highways and parkways – and all the joys they bring. (Yes, that was sarcasm.) This last year has more than made up for it. Case in point: Just the other morning, I was cruising on the Southern State when I passed one of those helpful overhead signs alerting you to any traffic
delays you might encounter up ahead. “Traffic Moving Well” it said. Wonderful. A few exits later, dead stop. No flashing lights, no sirens, no accidents in sight. Inching along, but why? Oh but there it was, way up ahead, the unmistakable orange cone – construction. Three lanes merging into one – no warning, no signs, not a human worker in sight… just a flashing arrow instructing the cars miles up ahead to start moving over. Perfect. Of course, even in such a situation when clearly no one is going anywhere fast, don’t think the drivers’ level of courtesy increases by even

Varsity, and Middle School cheerleaders preceded the four fanciful Homecoming floats that had been designed and constructed with tissue paper and immense creativity by dedicated members of each class during Spirit Week. The accompanying Sayville Fire Department trucks ensured notice with their blaring horns heralding the procession of floats. Depicting this year’s theme old video games - the Freshman Class portrayed Space Invaders, complete with 2-dimensional aliens: the Sophomores produced Pokemon, including Pikachu and Ash Ketchum; the Juniors packed a wallop with the unforgettable Packman gobbling up everything in sight; while the Seniors were classic with Mario Brothers, Mario, Luigi, and Princess Peach. All were hailed by a cheering crowd as they sailed to the High School football field. Before game time, the Freshman and Sophomores performed their lively skits, despite technical difficulties with their audio equipment. During halftime, the audio returned for the Juniors and Seniors, who each
The Fall Wildlife Festival will take place at the Theodore Roosevelt Nature Center, located within the West End of Jones Beach State Park, on Saturday, October 19th and Sunday, October 20th, from 11 a.m. to 4 p.m. This year’s festival theme is: Water: Every Drop Counts. The day will include a variety of water-themed children’s activities and displays from the Amateur Observer’s Society, Friends of the Hempstead Plains, Long Island Sierra Club, the U.S. Coast Guard, The Nature and Science Center of Long Island, Project Hope and the Science Museum
of Long Island. all mammals have in common. On a short field trip to the beach, the students identified mammals commonly found on Fire Island, were introduced to Nibbles the rat, and had an up-close, hands-on experience with a live mammal. Students in the early elementary team used nature journals to record observations about the natural world, including weather conditions, seasonality and animals. They searched for crickets under wooden logs and constructed a terrarium. They also investigated the effects that humans have on the environment through a variety of simple experiments including
simulations of acid rain and the natural selection of the peppered moth. Throughout the year, students in the elementary team will be working on a class project called “Trout in the Classroom.” Taking into consideration the environment required for trout to grow and survive, the students set up a fish tank and began their “trout journals,” which they will use throughout the year. Students also learned about horticulture when they examined, identified and planted spider plants. They recorded traits of two plants, one seeded from an adult plant and the other propagated from an adult plant.

THINKING PINK - The Cosmetology Class at Milliken Technical Center in Oakdale is raising money for breast cancer research by holding a PINK is for Hope event. In recognition of October being National Breast Cancer Awareness Month, the students are selling and applying Glitter Tattoos and Pink Hair Extensions on October 18th beginning at 9 a.m. Each pink hair extension is available for a $10 donation, and the Glitter Tattoos are $5 each, with all proceeds going to the American Cancer Society’s Making Strides Against Breast Cancer and the National Breast Cancer Foundation.

Woodhull Elementary School’s environmental education program continues to provide students with authentic field science education activities and opportunities to conduct investigations of their natural world. Throughout the year, the students complete inquirybased projects and draw from their surroundings to learn about complex science topics in a tangible way. Blue and gold blanketed the community as the Bayport-Blue Point School District celebrated Homecoming Weekend at the end of September. The festivities commenced with the annual Athletic Wall of Fame induction ceremony and breakfast reception. Each year, the district honors past athletes, coaches, administrators and honorary Phantoms who have made outstanding contributions to the district’s athletic program and inducts selected individuals into the Athletic Wall of Fame. This year’s honorees included Tom Stevens (Class of 2003), the 2003 girls cross-country state
championship team, Greg Green (Class of 1971), Catharine Johan Ryan (Class of 1999) and coach Rob Jackolski. Lining the streets leading to the high school, parade-goers cheered enthusiastically as community fire trucks, elementary and middle school student-musicians, the high school marching band and class floats (decorated to represent the homecoming theme of “Children’s Books”) made their way to the football stadium. The marching band also performed a pre-game number and the cheerleaders dazzled the audience throughout the game. Alexandra Constantine and Joe
Musso were named this year’s homecoming queen and king, with Alexandra crowned during halftime. Joe, a quarterback on the varsity football team, had been honored at the homecoming dance the night before. After a scoreless first half, the varsity football team made a tremendous comeback. Brendan Bateman threw two deep touchdown passes in a short span, allowing the team to score 17 points in the third quarter. On Friday, September 27th, approximately 225 students from the Eastern Suffolk BOCES (ESBOCES) Brookhaven Technical Center (BTC) in Bellport walked 1.7 miles for autism awareness. They far exceeded their goal to raise $500. Through the efforts of Computer Technology Teacher Giovanni Chiarelli and his students, over $600 was raised.
Mr. Chiarelli said, “My students visited every program in the building and made an announcement about the Autism Awareness fundraiser. We sold paper puzzle pieces and actually raised $600.15. We didn’t specifically ask for one dollar. We accepted pennies, nickels, dimes, quarters, whatever amount a student or staff member could give towards the
fundraiser.” Eastern Suffolk BOCES is dedicated to providing instruction, lifelong skills, and service to students with moderate to severe developmental disabilities within the autism spectrum. ESBOCES teams up with Autism Speaks each year at the walk to help raise awareness and funds to combat this disorder.

Music For Life Fundraiser Some of New York City’s best DJ talent will come together at 4 p.m. on Sunday, October 13th, at FOUR Food Studio & Cocktail Salon in Melville to help raise money to benefit “Team Galluzzo,” a charity dedicated to raising awareness and providing financial relief for cancer patients and their families. Music For Life was established in 2012, and for the first time in history, some of the most famous DJ’s in the NYC club scene, such as Victor Calderone, Hector Romero, Jonathan Peters and Grammy Award Winner Hex Hector, came together to raise money for industry families who were fighting cancer. Due to the event’s tremendous success, the Music For Life team is committed to making this an annual event. This year, “Team Galluzzo” has joined
forces with Music For Life to raise money for a fellow DJ and industry alum, Jeff Galluzzo and his family. Jeff, a 46 yearold, non-smoker, has been fighting Lung Cancer for the last four years and was diagnosed in the summer of 2010 while in training for a triathlon. Since then, Jeff has had numerous chemotherapy and radiation treatments, underwent four surgeries, one of which removed his right lung. Just two weeks ago, Jeff’s doctors informed him and his family that the cancer is now terminal and that there is nothing more they can do. Given the amount of daily care he requires, his fearless wife Jodi has been by his side, day and night, taking care of his every need. As you can imaagine, the hardship this family has endured mentally, physically and financially is
incredible, and yet they still soldier on with a positive attitude and unwavering determination. Jeff is a loving husband, father, son, brother, uncle, friend and just an overall incredible person. Suffolk County Legislator Lynne C. Nowick, Chair of the Legislature’s Parks, Recreation and Cultural Affairs Committee, recently met with Kathryn Curran, executive director of the Suffolk County Historical Society, to discuss the Society’s goals and upcoming projects. Since it was first settled in 1640, Suffolk County has experienced a rich history. The Society is working diligently to establish itself as one of the major anchors for downtown Riverhead by positioning itself as a bookend of the planned main Street cultural corridor linking the other art venues, theater, historic district and other points of interest. “The Suffolk County Historical Society contains a wealth of history, documents, artifacts and collections. It is a gem in the Riverhead community and a must visit destination for all of Long Islanders,” said Suffolk County Legislator Lynne C. Nowick The Suffolk County Historical Society was gifted with a Mobile Museum from the American Museum of Natural History. The Winnebago is handicapped accessible and outfitted with handson archeological and local cultural displays. It is able to travel to schools throughout Suffolk County and has a teacher on board to educate the students. The Society’s upcoming exhibit, Back to the Future, features contemporary artists’ work, which reflects elements of the Society’s permanent collection. The show will run from October 18th through November 23rd. Gold Coast Film Festival at this year’s Opening Night Benefit Gala, Joe Piscopo (NBC’s Saturday Night Live), Eddie Griffin (Norbit), Jackie (The Joke Man) Martling (formerly of The Howard Stern Show) and Paul Provenza (The Aristocrats) who will bring to the Festival his world famous, star-studded presentation of “Set-List, Stand Up Comedy Without a Net.” Comedy Writer/ Producer Jeffrey Gurian, known by everyone in the comedy world, is Exec. Producing the live events for the Laugh Island program. Other highlights of the film festival will feature focuses on Women in Film, Israeli film and films for GCIFF’s annual Heroes theme. The New York State Department of Environmental Conservation is holding its 16th Annual Youth Waterfowl Program, open to young hunters on Long Island ages 12 to 15, on November 2nd and November 9th and 10th, Commissioner Joe Martens announced today. The program is a collaboration with the New York Conservation Officers Association; Suffolk County Department of Parks, Recreation and Conservation; Shikar Safari Club International; Ducks Unlimited; and South Shore Waterfowlers Association. The Youth Waterfowl Program, an instructional course, is set for November 2nd. Youth Waterfowl Days, which are specially designated hunting days, are set for November 9th and 10th. Meditation classes took place all day. Jackie DelleGrazie of New Hyde Park commented that the best thing about the Over 50 Fair was “the variety of exhibitors. There was so much to see that I will have to go earlier next time to get to all of them,” she said, despite spending 3-4 hours there. The Fair’s slogan, “60 is the new 50!” summarized the philosophy of the event’s organizer, that Americans are living longer and should seek to live life to its fullest. Says Kaplan, “There are so many opportunities here on Long Island. You just need to know where to look to find them. Many
can be found at the Over 50 Fair.” Free health screenings were available, such as body fat analysis, blood pressure checks, and oxygen saturation. Other cardiac testing was also available from Advanced Cardiovascular Diagnostics. Food samples were provided by Mio Posto Italian Restaurant, Mulberry
Street of Babylon, and Love & Quiches Gourmet. The INN (Interfaith Nutrition Network), a local non-profit, handled the raffles. Attendees donated 120 pounds of non-perishable food and over $330 in cash donations and received raffle tickets in the hopes of winning exciting and valuable prizes. Other non-profit organizations
that participated included the Lymphatic Research Foundation, SeniorNet at Family Service LeagueL.I., and the Tobacco Action Coalition of Long Island. Attendees were greeted at the event by several beauty queens including Ms. New York Senior America 2013, Virginia Werner. The Over 50 Fair was

The 4th Annual Over 50 Fair took place on Sunday, September 29th at the Melville Marriott to a crowd of over 600. The one-day expo was once again organized as a “celebration of life on Long Island” for people over 50. To make it even easier for attendees to participate in this year’s event, there was free valet parking as well as free scooter rentals for those who needed one, compliments of Patriot Mobility Inc. “The Over 50 Fair is part health and wellness fair, part conference and part activities and lifestyle expo,” said Fair Director Barbara Kaplan, who will once again organize Long Island’s popular All Kids Fair on April 27th. With 30 classes covering a variety of disciplines, there was “something for everyone at the Over 50 Fair,” she added. Some of the speakers were new this year, but many old favorites returned. Classes included two comedy shows, Zumba, laughter yoga, social media, weight loss, bio-identical hormones,

Suffolk Residents Compete Veteran NICE (Nassau Inter-County Express) bus operator Pat Piegari of Lindenhurst won top honors at the statewide bus “Roadeo” championship, an annual bus drivers’ skills and knowledge competition held recently at Nickerson Beach Park in Lido Beach. This is the first time the competition, sponsored by the New York State Public Transit Association, has been held on Long Island. The annual Roadeo, celebrating its 26th year, tests some of the state’s best bus operators, while promoting safety, driving skills and professionalism. Other participating bus systems included City of Long Beach, Central New York Regional Transportation Authority, Ulster County Area Transit,
R o c h e s t e r- G e n e s e e Regional Transportation Authority, Capital District Transportation Authority and Tompkins County Consolidated Area Transit. More than 40 judges from throughout the state participated. Piegari, a 28-year veteran bus driver, will represent NICE and New York State at the upcoming American Public Transportation Association International Bus Roadeo scheduled for May 2-6, 2014 in Kansas City, MO. Piegari has many 2nd and 3rd place Roadeo finishes in his long career, but this is his first New York State win. Other participating NICE operators were Richard Kubik of Seaford and Joseph Springer of Brentwood. The City of Long Beach sent operator
Robert Herbst. Operators from across the state qualified for the state championship by performing well in their regional Roadeo’s. Drivers compete in a series of events, including conducting proper pretrip vehicle inspections and knowledge of industry standard safety habits. Finally, operators test their driving abilities in a timed competition through a marked course. The course, marked off with traffic cones, featured 10 simulated road conditions or maneuvers that operators encounter on a daily basis. Maneuvers such as turns, stops, and handling serpentine courses highlighted the participants driving skills while operating a 40-foot Orion bus.
