Movement Speaks STUDIO OF DANCE
Movement Speaks Studio of Dance recently opened its doors in Babylon Village, at 225 Deer Park Avenue. After having danced for 27 years and taught for nearly 15 of those years, partners Aileen Smisek and Megan Connell decided to take the leap and open a dance studio of their own. Movement Speaks offers classes for children from ages 18 months through adult levels. These include: Mommy & Me, Pre-School, Ballet, Tap, Jazz, Hip Hop, Lyrical, Contemporary/Modern, along with a competition team training class. They also feature an award-winning competitive team, open to all serious dancers. Aileen and Megan’s choreography has been honored through the years with numerous prestigious awards at dance
competitions, both on the Regional and National level. Many of their students have gone on to dance in college and beyond. Aileen and Megan plan to involve the studio in upcoming community events such as the Babylon Fall Festival and the Old-Fashioned Night of Shopping. Also in the works for the coming year are a Zumbathon, a Mommy & Daughter Tea Party and, during the holiday season, a “12 Days Of Christmas” event where parents can drop their children off at the studio for a dance class and a special project while they shop locally in the Village. Movement Speaks looks forward to being an active member of the Babylon Chamber of Commerce, as well as the local community. The studio also hopes to fundraise for several causes close to their hearts. Best of luck in the neighborhood!

Eastern Suffolk BOCES (ESBOCES) special education students in Brookhaven Learning Center’s Transition Services Program learn valuable life skills that support their independence at home and in the community. Life skills are developed through a variety of modalities in the areas of horticulture, technology, home living, retail, and culinary arts.
In the Hospitality-Home Living-Custodial Program, Special Education Teacher Drew Girolamo teaches students how to be active participants in their own lives. “They learn to sort, wash, dry, and fold laundry as well as vacuum, read labels, and dust. We use task analysis which means we break a skill into small, manageable steps.” Independence grows as skills are mastered. Students accepted a
project to sort and fold over 200 T-shirts that will be distributed to members of the ESBOCES team for the Autism Speaks Walk scheduled for Sunday, October 5th at Jones Beach State Park. Mr. Girolamo said, “The project gave the students an opportunity to use their learned skills for a great cause, raising awareness for autism.”

Farewell To A Legend By: Jamie Lynn Ryan I first became a Yankees fan back in the fall of 1995, as the team made its first run at the postseason since 1981, with the legendary Don Mattingly at its helm. For the first time in my lifetime, I understood the magnitude of this storied organization. And then, just like that, the run was over. Mattingly walked off into the sunset, having never made it to a World Series. The end of an era. But there, waiting in the wings, was a rookie shortstop, destined to pick up the torch and run with it. And run he did, for the next 20 seasons, leading the Yankees to five World Championships
and racking up countless milestones along the way. Derek Jeter exemplified what it meant to be a true Yankee in an era when there were very few, if any, athletes doing things the “right” way, never mind in a city as unforgiving as New York. Much has been said, and written, over these last several weeks – really, throughout the past year, since Jeter announced his plans to retire at the end of the 2014 season – analyzing the legacy of the player, the upbringing of the man, his place in Yankees, and baseball, lore. To that, I can only add the following: while he may never have been the “best” in any one statistical category, as
relentlessly pointed out by rival fans and the national media, he was undeniably in a class by himself in the only categories that counted – dignity, sportsmanship, integrity… and, oh yeah, he had quite the knack for coming through in the clutch, when the stakes were the highest, the pressure the greatest. Not bad for an “overrated” player, right? Yankees fan or not, these last several weeks have been quite the emotional rollercoaster. An historic era in Yankees history has come to a close, the only one my generation has had the privilege to witness. And what a privilege it was.

Books and tests To a kid are just pests. Papers and projects Are as boring as the subjects.
But what does tomorrow bring? Another day being played by a string. You go back to work And remember everyone’s a jerk.
We all question why we go, But we really don’t know. We go because we have to, And sometimes we have to do what we have to do.
You go back to school, Where everyone thinks they’re so cool. And you’re lost in the building With teens who act like children.
The key is to find moments to live for, To not live life like it’s a chore. Make a friend, Find somewhere you blend.
If I could stress this more, Maybe you wouldn’t feel so sore. Find a friend, They could help you mend.
Life is harder on your own, Especially when you’ve yet to be grown. But we blame the teachers And the coaches who put us on the bleachers.
Friends distract you, Make things seem not so blue. You’d have someone to confide in, To pick up your chin.
We tend to think of the world as really small And every choice we make is a close call. It’s always who we know, not who we knew, And you feel like you’ve run out of glue.
When you stand together as an army, Everywhere you go is a party. Being with the people you love Makes everything okay, kind of.

Palmer, a UCP of Suffolk Employment Connection participant, shared her personal journey as a person with a disability. Sueann has struggled with learning disabilities for her whole life and has had challenges in holding down a job. She was referred to The Employment Connection to assist her in securing employment. She worked with an employment specialist who helped her with creating a resume, submitting applications and improving her interview skills. She has been employed for over a year and lives her “Life Without Limits” each and every day. “The fashion show was an absolute success,” Colleen West-Levy said. “The venue was beautiful; the models were great and the outpouring of love and support from the friends of UCP of Suffolk has been amazing.” “Everyone has been
extremely generous and supportive,” Kim Smith said. “We had wonderful raffle prizes donated, the support of great sponsors
and a fantastic turnout. The enthusiasm of the models and our co-emcees, Leeana and Steve, made the day a memorable one.”

United Cerebral Palsy Association of Greater Suffolk Inc. (UCP of Suffolk) welcomed more than 250 friends to its 2nd Annual Luncheon and Fashion show held at Oheka Castle in Huntington, on Wednesday, September 17th. The event raised almost $48,000. The event, which was cochaired by UCP of Suffolk Board Chair Colleen WestLevy and Board Member Kim Smith, Esq., featured twenty volunteer models from UCP of Suffolk programs as well as its Luncheon and Fashion Show Committee and Board members. Coemcees Steve Harper and Leeana Karlson of the K 98.3 FM Morning Show kept the crowd excited and energized as male and female models strutted down the runway in the latest fall fashions of Marshs of Huntington. The audience was inspired when Sueann

Stepping It Up
On September 24th, a campus-wide four mile walk to support Autism Awareness took place at the Eastern Suffolk BOCES Oakdale campus. A typical number of steps per mile is between 2,000 and 2,500 steps. These students walked approximately
9,200 steps. Students from the Islip Academic Center, Islip Career Center, IAC@ ICC, and the Academy at Milliken Technical Center walked the walk and raised over $800. The money will be donated to Autism Speaks.
Each year, Assistant Principal James Smith organizes the walk. He said, “The students on this campus are so dedicated and always want to lend a helping hand. The Greater Patchogue Chamber of Commerce’s non-profit foundation, the Greater Patchogue Foundation, Inc., is proud to announce the winners of this year’s Bocce Ball Tournament held during the Italian Feast of St. Liberata, which took place on Saturday, September 27th. Of the 16 teams who played bocce, this year’s winners were Nick Gallipoli and Rocky Amone from G&M Dege, a septic system maintenance company and member of the Greater
Patchogue Chamber of Commerce. Second place went to team Double Durso. The tournament began at noon and ended at 8:30 p.m. Upon conclusion, 15 games were played and 40 players participated. “This year, the Foundation’s Cultural Heritage Committee planned a fantastic event that was very well attended, and had the best turn out for the Bocce Tournament, thus far,” said David Kennedy, executive director of the Greater Patchogue Chamber of

Student Musicians Honored
Eight promising studentmusicians at BayportBlue Point High School – juniors Garrett Filloramo, Cassandra Nielsen and Allyson Rocco, and seniors Sarah Barsch, Sean Gray, Theresa Heaney, Kyle McCrosson and Elizabeth Rudner – have been chosen for this year’s Suffolk County Music Educators Association All-County Festival. These All-County students, selected for their talent, dedication to music and high scores at last spring’s New York State School Music Association solo festival, will perform at the NYSCAME/SCMEA AllCounty Concert on Nov. 21 at Half Hollow Hills High School East in Dix Hills.
McCrosson (French horn), Nielsen (Bb clarinet) and Rocco (bass clarinet) will be members of the All-County Symphonic Band (Rocco was selected for both Bb and bass clarinet but has chosen to perform on bass clarinet.). Filloramo (percussion) and Heaney (violin) will play in the All-County Symphony Orchestra. Singing in the All-County Mixed Chorus will be Barsch (alto), Gray (tenor) and Rudner (alto). Barsch, Gray and Nielsen were further honored by being named All-State musicians. They will attend this year’s New York State School Music Association Winter Conference in Rochester, N.Y. during three days in December.
Barsch (alto I) and Gray (tenor II) will perform in the All-State Mixed Chorus, while Nielsen will play Bb clarinet in the All-State Wind Ensemble. Nielsen was also chosen as an alternate for Eb clarinet, and Rocco was named an alternate on Bb clarinet. “We are incredibly proud of these fine young musicians, who will have the opportunity to participate and perform amongst their peers from the county and state levels,” said Paul Weber, Bayport-Blue Point’s chairperson for music and art. “We wish them the best of luck and hope they have an outstanding musical experience.”

The annual “Battle of the Books” is a county-wide reading competition for 6th-9th grade students. The students competed in early August at The Javits Lecture Center at Stony Brook University by answering questions about eight pre-selected books they read throughout the summer. Along with
the outstanding accomplishment of the Connetquot middle school students, the judges also presented the Sportsmanship Award to the members of the Connetquot Public Library team.
Students in the Supermarket Warehouse Occupations Program at Islip Career Center are learning the importance of waste reduction and recycling. This Special Career Education Program introduces students to different positions in the supermarket and warehousing industry and offers cooperative work experience and internships. Teacher Ken Abel said, “Every week the students collect newspapers, magazines, brown corrugated cardboard
and plastic bottles, and place the items in WRAP containers provided by the Town of Islip.” Many of the students wanted to know what the town did with the recyclables so Mr. Abel planned a field trip to the Multi-purpose Recycling Facility in Holbrook. The Town’s WRAP (We Recycle America Proudly) Program has a full-time recycling educator, Danielle Wynn. The students learned that recyclables are sorted, cleaned, and processed into materials that can be
used in manufacturing. Journeys Into American Indian Territory representatives Uaian Bruno and Maddie Cheers presented the Eastern Woodland Program of traditional Native American culture for fourth-graders at Academy Street Elementary School in Bayport on September 24th. Students engaged in a range of activities from mock rabbit hunting and grinding corn to exploring
a longhouse dwelling and the sport of lacrosse’s roots as a training exercise for hunting. The program, supported by the school’s PTA, served as a launching pad for the grade’s “The First People of New York” social studies unit on the Haudenosaunee tribe, popularly known as the Iroquois. The assembly’s content also correlates to the New York State Common Core Standards

Senior Scholars competed. Sarah Barsch was selected as a 20142015 National Hispanic Recognition Program Scholar. The NHRP award, initiated in 1983 by the College Board, recognizes academically outstanding Hispanic/Latino high school students based on scores on the PSAT/ NMSQT they took as juniors. Those achieving a GPA of 3.5 or higher, such as Barsch, receive the Scholar designation. Liu plays violin in the chamber orchestra and
competes in Science Olympiad and DECA. Barsch, who plans to study public relations in college, participates in numerous activities including Habitat for Humanity, the school yearbook, the Tri-M Music Honor Society and her class club. Both students are also members of Bayport-Blue Point’s National Honor Society. “I was ecstatic,” Barsch said of learning she had been recognized. “It’s such an honor.”
GAME SHOW CHALLENGE - Connetquot Central School District’s Edith L. Slocum Elementary School recently challenged k-5th grade students with an interactive game show “Hollyrock Brain Challenge.” The students were divided into various teams with teachers as their captains for several fun physically and intellectually challenging activities. On September 6th, Alzheimer’s Disease Resource Center, Inc. hosted its 11th annual Old Bethpage Walk for Alzheimer’s & Coney Island Street Fair at the Old Bethpage Village Restoration. Approximately 100 teams and more than 800 individuals came out in support of Alzheimer’s research and awareness. The event began with a presentation of colors by the Butehorn Brothers VFW Post 4987 in Bethpage and a dedication ceremony for those who died during the September 11th, 2001 attacks. Louis Grottano, who serves as a caregiver for his wife who has
early-onset Alzheimer’s disease, was the event’s guest speaker. He spoke about the difficulties and challenges he faces caring for a loved one with Alzheimer’s disease. Walkers toured the village restoration’s scenic grounds and visited some of the historic structures during the five-kilometer (3.1-mile) event. At the end of the course, they planted flags in the Hope Garden in remembrance of those who are suffering with or passed away from Alzheimer’s disease. After the walk, participants were invited to enjoy a Coney Islandthemed lunch featuring
hot dogs, corned beef and pastrami mini-sandwiches, Brooklyn egg creams and pretzels. The event also provided entertainment by the USO Liberty Bells, live music from Encore and dancing performed by the June Clare Dancers. The event included a petting zoo, pony rides, a raffle and a variety of vendors. Ronald McDonald made a special appearance, taking photos with participants and their children. Photo Exhibit Winners The Opening Reception of the Art League of Long Island’s photography exhibit titled Pattern & Rhythm Through the Lens held on September 28th celebrated works by 42 artists from the tri-state area. The photographers found these rhythmic patterns in manmade structures, nature, shadows and light, and more, using the camera lens to focus our attention on their imaginative visions and interpretations. Walking For Beauty On Sunday, October 26th, at 9:30 a.m. thousands of Long Islanders will take “steps” toward eradicating breast cancer during the 21st annual Walk for Beauty in a Beautiful Place. This year will also include what is believed to be the first-of-its-kind in Suffolk County, the COLOR Splash. In this event, lively colored powder is thrown onto participants so they finish the course rainbow splattered. The atmosphere will be more festive than ever with colored participants, balloon arches and bands throughout the course, and camaraderie in connection with the Walk for Beauty event that to date has raised over $1 million for cancer research at Stony Brook Medicine. Proceeds are also used to support the Ward Melville Heritage Organization’s Unique Boutique for prostheses and wigs, benefitting those battling cancer. The Walk for Beauty is building upon its roots as a community-organized event by strengthening participation of local student groups, local service organizations, local businesses and local Scouting Troops. The Ward Melville High School Key Club has committed to staffing the COLOR Splash with over 150 volunteers. For an additional $5 ($10 after October 15th), participants may register for the COLOR Splash and on event day pass through four balloon arches to get dowsed with four different non-toxic, colors at various spots throughout the course to highlight the joyous celebration this event is intended to be. These vibrant colors mark the completion of individual sections of the walk and will keep the energy of participants high as they work through the course. Ward Melville High School Key Club President, Kyra Durko,
is spearheading an unprecedented level of involvement from the High School’s students. Several high school student music groups will join many other wellknown Long Island native music groups to keep the energy alive by performing at various spots along the participants’ courses to create a unique experience for runners, walkers, and spectators alike. The Ward Melville Art Honor Society is painting the signage directing participants to parking for the event. Anthony Muscarella, a Ward Melville High School senior, art student, and graphic wiz created the 10K t-shirt design as well as the official COLOR Splash logo. Many high school sports teams, including the women’s tennis team and the women’s volleyball team will be participating in the Walk. The Yearbook staff, led by editor Amanda Spacarelli, will be coordinating the COLOR Splash finish-line photo booth, and the music department is involved in helping to organize the performances along the route. Also new this year, Kyra Durko has launched the Walk For Beauty Ambassadors program to further enrich the new life that Walk for Beauty has developed this year. This program creates a network of students from other regional high schools including Port Jefferson, Smithtown, Shoreham Wading River, Half Hollow Hills, Walt Whitman, Harborfields, Centereach, Our Savior, Comsewogue, and more, that are helping grow the regional presence at this event. Ambassadors work to get their schools and communities involved in the Walk for Beauty, Color Splash, and 10K run through various active promotional tactics, focusing on clubs and athletic teams. C o m m u n i t y participation will be greater
than ever with support from local businesses, the Stony Brook and St. James Fire Departments, Suffolk County Police and CERT Volunteers, the Brookhaven (ARES) Amateur Radio Emergency Service, Three Village Kiwanis Club, local Girl Scouts, local Boy Scouts, Stony Brook University commuter student organization, cheer squad, dance team, and numerous sports teams from Murphy Junior High School and the community. In addition to hosting musical acts and water stations, residents along the route, as well as all residents in Stony Brook and Setauket, are being encouraged to “turn the town pink” by purchasing and displaying pink ribbons on their properties to show support for the cause. Official Walk for Beauty pink bows can be purchased from the Ward Melville Heritage Organization for $5. Advanced registration is now open for the COLOR Splash, at $30 for preregistration before October 15th, and $35 after that and day-of. Registration is also open for the Walk for Beauty and the Hercules on the Harbor 10K at $25 and $35, respectively. The first 1,000 walkers to signup will receive a commemorative 2014 Walk for Beauty t-shirt and the first 250 10K runners are guaranteed a Hercules on the Harbor long-sleeve t-shirt (sponsored by Bethpage Federal Credit Union). Hospital Project
Stony Brook University showcased the construction progress of its new Stony Brook Children’s Hospital facility during a ceremony yesterday where President Samuel L. Stanley Jr., M.D., was joined by public officials, generous donors, young patients and their families, and hundreds of administrators, physicians and staff. The new facility, which will have 100 beds and occupy two stories of a new 10-story Hospital Pavilion, is slated to open in 2016. President Stanley expressed gratitude to Sen. Kenneth P. LaValle and
Sen. John Flanagan for securing more than $50 million for an expansion project that will help construct the medical and research translation (MART) building and the new Hospital Pavilion. The combined $425M project is the largest capital construction project within the State University of New York (SUNY) system in the past two decades. President Stanley also announced that the new Children’s Hospital has now received nearly $20 million in philanthropic contributions from hundreds of community
members and businesses. This total includes a $9 million matching challenge grant from an anonymous donor, which was met recently when the Knapp Swezey Foundation pledged $2.7 million toward Stony Brook Children’s Hospital. “Today is a celebration for the children – the past, present and future patients of Stony Brook Children’s Hospital,” Dr. Stanley said. “Stony Brook Children’s ensures that Long Island’s 400,000 children and their families have access to state-of-the-art pediatric services close to home.”
Stony Brook Children’s Hospital is the only dedicated children’s hospital located in the 100 miles between the Nassau/Queens border and Montauk, and the only children’s hospital on Long Island associated with a medical research institution. Dr. Stanley paid tribute to state Sens. LaValle (R-Port Jefferson) and Flanagan (R-East Northport) for being such strong advocates for Stony Brook Children’s. “Our children – and our children’s children – owe a debt of gratitude to you for making this day a reality,” he said. “This hospital will provide a healthcare facility that is second to none in our region,” Sen. LaValle said. “I am happy to be instrumental in the delivery of what will be a leading healthcare facility for children.” Sen. Flanagan added, “The expansion of Children’s Hospital continues to solidify Stony Brook as a premiere
teaching hospital, delivering the highest quality of medical care from some of the best doctors and medical staff in the world.” The new hospital will feature private familycentric rooms; separate pediatric inpatient areas for oncology, adolescent and intensive care; the general pediatrics unit; a pediatric procedure suite; patient playrooms and a family lounge. Additionally, the expanded facility is expected to help recruit and retain the best pediatric doctors in the country and expand the research frontier toward developing groundbreaking therapies for the cure of childhood disease and disability. “An essential mission of Stony Brook Children’s is to train the next generation of doctors and to push back the frontiers of translational medical research,” said Kenneth Kaushansky, M.D., Stony Brook University School of Medicine Dean and Sr. Vice President for Health
Sciences. “This expansion will advance the training of pediatricians and pediatric specialists and pediatric researchers for Suffolk County, for Long Island and beyond.” More than 8,500 infants, children and young adults are admitted each year to Stony Brook Children’s Hospital, which in its existing facility operates 106 pediatric beds and has more than 200 full-time and voluntary pediatric physicians and surgeons in 33 different specialties. “The new Children’s Hospital will reflect the Children’s Hospital difference – familycentered, age-appropriate care from highly trained specialists,” said Margaret McGovern, M.D., Ph.D., Professor and Chair, Department of Pediatrics, Stony Brook University School of Medicine and Physician-In-Chief, Stony Brook Children’s Hospital. “It’s a comprehensive approach that addresses the unique physical, emotional and developmental

On September 8th, Joe Delgado SILO Executive Director and Marilyn Tucci SILO Community Outreach Specialist created an opportunity for disabled and visually impaired individuals to experience Peconic Landing’s Art Without Barriers Sculpture Garden. This is Peconic’s 5th Annual Sculpture Exhibition in which they strive to fulfill their mission to provide a lifestyle that recognizes the diversity of peoples’ interests, abilities and ambitions. Art Without Barriers - “what you hear is what you see” - is dedicated to widening the opportunity for appreciation of critically acclaimed sculpture by people who are visually impaired/ disabled.
Accessibility to sculptors’ work has been enhanced using “Audio Description,” a form of assistive audio technology developed by museums and theaters whereby audio devices are given to each visually impaired or disabled person which allows them to focus on the features of the artwork. Each device has a Audio Description of the all sculptures within the garden and therefore allows each individual to hear the descriptive language describing the piece while touching the sculpture.
