Following a highly attended Friday night pep rally, Saturday’s events began with a spirited float-filled parade, which both started and ended at Connetquot High School. The football game’s kickoff was preceded by a somber ceremony in honor of a former Connetquot student and pilot, Matthew Stagliano.

Welcome to October, the month when thoughts turn from late summer sunshine and seaside walks to apples and pumpkins and all things autumn. ‘Tis the season before THE season of holiday madness, that lull when – aside from Halloween – one can simply enjoy the crisp air while taking a hay ride with friends, navigating a corn maze or picking up some local produce at the neighborhood farm stand. Personally, I am a girl of summer, basking in

the glow of sunsets and days spent at the beach, of aimless wandering along our many shores in search of hidden oases of beauty. But autumn has its own special unique charm as well. There is nothing quite like feeling the crunch of freshly fallen leaves under your boots, of cuddling up with a good book and some hot apple cider donuts. This is the time of respite, that period of transition from long golden days to chilly evenings, the calm before the storm of feasting with family, of decking the halls

and shopping ‘til your heart’s content, for loved ones and yourself. Come November, its full-steam ahead, and the novelty of the season tends to wear off a bit amidst the chaos. Now is the time to treasure. So take October, enjoy. Take in the foliage, absorb your surroundings, snap a few photos for your autumn album, catch up with old friends over coffee – do whatever it is to soak in the season while it’s here. Because, before we know it, we’ll be on to the next one.

Lifesaving Actions

Supervisor Angie Carpenter was joined by Town of Islip Councilmembers to honor three Fair Harbor lifeguards. On August 17th, lifeguards were notified that an 18 year-old boy was choking on a fruit pit. Ocean lifeguards Kyle Wilson, Jack Luquer and Peter Lepore responded immediately and performed CPR. They administered back blows and the Heimlich maneuver. The boy maintained a pulse, but was struggling to

breath. Luckily, a doctor was vacationing on the beach during the incident and helped the three lifeguards stabilize the boy by administering oxygen and rescue breaths. Within seconds, the pit became visible and the victim’s father was able to grab and remove it. The boy was taken via helicopter to Stony Brook University Hospital where he was treated and released. These ocean lifeguards acted quickly, utilizing their skills and training in a life threatening situation

On September 23rd, Supervisor Ed Romaine joined Nathanial Woodhull Elementary School students during a field trip to the Wertheim National Wildlife Refuge in Shirley. During the event, the Supervisor spoke with over 100 students about the environment, recycling and local government. “Wertheim is a natural treasure right here in Brookhaven Town,” said Supervisor Romaine. “I

enjoyed spending time speaking with the children and I was impressed with their knowledge and enthusiasm for protecting the environment. Everyone should visit to Wertheim, it’s one of the most beautiful places on Long Island.” The Wertheim National Wildlife Refuge is 2,550 acre refuge on the south shore of Long Island is bisected by the Carmans River; a New York state

designated scenic river and one of the largest on the island. Wertheim hosts a variety of habitats including oak-pine woodlands, grasslands and fresh, brackish and salt water wetlands. These habitats attract and support many types of wildlife including white-tailed deer, osprey, muskrat, fox, turtles, frogs and fish. The refuge also serves as a haven for waterfowl, shorebirds, raptors and songbirds.

Olympic Fever The East Neck Nursing and Rehabilitation Center residents recently participated in the Golden Games, an annual Olympic style event for senior citizens. This year’s games were held at the Patchogue Family YMCA, which accommodated more than one hundred residents from nine senior citizen care facilities in Suffolk County.

During the games, the participants competed in a series of events such as volleyball, distance throw, basketball, bowling and relay races for their chance to win gold, silver and bronze medals for their facility during the day-long event. Participants from the East Neck Nursing and Rehabilitation Center showcased their athletic

abilities - placing an impressive second in bowling, third in distance throw and fourth in the volleyball tournament. This fun-filled event focused on team-building by providing East Neck residents a day of friendly competition and time to socialize with residents of neighboring care centers.

Chalking for Peace

On September 21st International Day of Peace, the sidewalks around the Patchogue-Medford High School (PMHS) were decorated with chalk drawings created by Eastern Suffolk BOCES (ESBOCES) students participating in the global art project Chalk4Peace. They joined over one million artists around the globe in this pro-peace project. ESBOCES students receive instruction, educational support, and attend academic classes at the included site at PMHS. In previous years, students participated in International Day of Peace by making pinwheels. This year Art Teacher Jean Kleifgen-Guli and School Social Worker Lynn Walsh,

who jointly organized the event, chose to do something more hands-on and meaningful to honor International Day of Peace. Walsh said, “There is so much hatred and violence in the world these kids are growing up in. I wanted them to have the opportunity to identify themselves as defenders and prompters of peace, and to share that identity with their school community.” Kleifgen-Guli said, “Chalk4Peace gave the students an opportunity to really express themselves through art. The cement sidewalk around the parking lot was the perfect canvas.” Walsh asked the students to think about what peace meant to them and then

transform those thoughts into artwork. The students got to work crafting peace signs, hearts, flowers, colorful mosaics, and serene landscapes that conveyed a sense of peace. Several students drew upon the words of John Lennon and Give Peace a Chance to influence their drawings, or created slogans like ‘Make peace not war’ and ‘Peace = Happiness’ to enhance their designs. Kleifgen-Guli said, “I hope the students that participated in this event were able to think about the possibility for peace in our world. Our goal is for the students and staff to grow closer with our school community and make a difference on the local and global level.”

BRUSH TRUCK COMPETITION - On September 24th, Supervisor Ed Romaine and State Senator Tom Croci attended the Patchogue Fire Department’s (PFD) 4th Annual Brush Truck Training Competition fundraiser at the Brookhaven Town Firemen’s Park in Ridge. At the event, fire departments from throughout Brookhaven OLYMPIC FEVER - East Neck Nursing and Rehabilitation Center residents prepare Town conducted various events on the track and in the field covering scenarios that for a friendly game of volleyball during the annual Golden Games event. Woodhull Elementary School students and staff in the Fire Island School District paused to remember and reflect about the historical importance of 9/11 and marked the 15th anniversary of “Patriot’s Day.” In honor of the day, Superintendent of Schools

Loretta Ferraro read from “The Man Who Walked Between the Towers” by Mordicai Gerstein. The book tells the story of Philippe Petit’s walk on a tight rope between the twin towers in 1974 as a memorial piece. Additionally, all students created placards depicting the two towers

over a red, white and blue heart, which were displayed on a bulletin board in the school’s main hallway. Feeling a special connection to the day, one student – Jack Brennan – wore a military uniform to school that day to honor a family friend who was lost in the tragedy.

Phantom Pride Displayed class of inductees. This year, the district honored Alysha Rodriquez, Chris Niblock, Mark Miller and Guy Italiano and placed their commemorative plaques on the offical wall. The traditional homecoming parade began at Blue Point Elementary School, and participants gathered support for the hometown Phantoms as they traveled through the community before ultimately ending up at Bayport-Blue Point High School. With construction

taking place in the high school stadium, this year’s homecoming game was hosted at James Wilson Young Middle School. At halftime, Jake Liberatore and Mackenzie Fabiani were crowned homecoming king and queen, respectively. The senior class was named the winner of the float contest with their Jaws-themed rendition. During the football game, the Phantoms dominated the field and captured a 31-6 victory over Southampton.

Restoration Workshops Brookhaven Town Supervisor Ed Romaine has announced that the Town will sponsor the Cornell Cooperative Extension of Suffolk County’s (CCE) Marine Meadows Program Workshops in partnership at Bellport Village Marina on Saturday October 1st and October 15th from 10 a.m. to 12 p.m. These workshops will enable essential eelgrass habitat to be restored in Bellport Bay. After Superstorm Sandy opened up “Old Inlet” bringing a new influx of clean, cool ocean water to this end of the bay, the Town of Brookhaven was interested in bringing back the eelgrass populations that had been declining in this area prior to the storm, and partnered with CCE’s Marine Meadows Program to do so. The conditions created as a result of the increased flushing proved to be favorable to eelgrass, as demonstrated by the results of CCE’s surveys and test plantings. The cool and clear water that the old inlet will provide allows for eelgrass to be supported, and CCE’s restoration activities will speed up the natural process of eelgrass recruitment, which relies

heavily on chance in areas far away from existing populations. The upcoming workshops are sponsored by the Town of Brookhaven, and will build upon the restoration work initiated last year. In October 2015 over 30 individuals, including Brookhaven Supervisor Ed Romaine who is an environmental advocate and an important supporter of CCE’s restoration efforts, came out to lend a hand. The 2000 eelgrass shoots processed at this workshop were planted at two test planting sites in Bellport Bay, which is in eastern Great South Bay. When CCE monitored the sites this month to see how the plantings fared the summer heat so far (eelgrass prefers cold water and gets stressed in summer temperatures), they were very happy to report that both sites still supported eelgrass, and one of the two sites looked especially good. Not only had the eelgrass survived, but it had expanded significantly and was harboring marine life already, including a school of porgy (aka scup) fry. The plants to be processed at the upcoming

workshops will add to the thriving new meadows. On Saturday October 1st, and Saturday October 15th, participants will gather at the Bellport Marina to weave eelgrass shoots (harvested from healthy donor meadows in our local waters) into burlap planting discs. Once assembled, these discs will be planted by highly trained, SCUBA certified CCE Marine Program staff at designated restoration sites in Bellport Bay. These newly created “marine meadows” will serve as important marine habitat for many species of finfish and shellfish and help enhance the health and productivity of our local bays. All are welcome to participate, although this activity is best suited for ages 7 and up. Stomping Out Bullying Looking to help make a difference in the world, Bayport-Blue Point National Honor Society recently sponsored a local food drive, which was called “The Food Drive to Stomp Out Bullying.” This event was held in collaboration with The Band Perry, Long Island Cares and My Country 96.1 FM in an effort in putting an end to

hunger throughout Long Island. As a result of the school community’s generosity, BBP collected a total of 539 pounds of nonperishable foods. The donated items were delivered to Long Island Cares, Long Island’s regional food bank. In addition to benefiting those in need, the food drive also helped to raise

awareness about bullying in schools, as the school who donated the most food will win a special musical performance from The Band Perry and an important antibullying presentation by Kym Laub of HUGS, a human understanding and growth services company based out of Westhampton Beach.
