Odds & Ends So begins year two of the great “unretirement” from dance, as I dusted off the old tap shoes yet again and made my way back to the studio of my childhood once more. There is something to be said for recapturing your youth, however recent it may have been. In some ways, it is even better the second time around, as we all seem to have a newfound appreciation for the respite it provides from daily life. It is important for everyone to discover their own outlet, whether it be in the form of mental or physical release, as we each have our share of stresses to contend with. Sometimes, isolating a simple moment to take a deep breath and collect your thoughts is all that is needed. Other times, an hour spent unwinding while reading a few chapters of a book, listening to a record or even vegging out in front of
the television is an ideal way to decompress. With that, the new fall tv season is upon us, providing hours of entertainment to choose from, or randomly flip through, as the case may be. It’s funny, but back in the old VCR days, I would painstakingly plan out my viewing schedule, determining which shows to watch live, which to record, sometimes on multiple devices. Now, with the advent of DVR, I record almost everything, preferring instead to fast forward through the commercials. Of course, with this, you run the risk of having particularly popular plot lines “spoiled” for you on social media, due to everyone’s incessant need to instantaneously offer a running commentary on just about every aspect of life. What ever did we do before Twitter, I wonder? Speaking of, rumor has it

that the social media giant will be doubling the character limit of its Tweets, a piece of “news” completely irrelevant to most people; yet somehow, it has dominated the news cycle of late. Sometimes, concise is the way to be. No need to elaborate. The more space we have, the more we tend to ramble on… and, well, you know… But I digress. As October sets in, and perhaps with it a bit of autumnal weather - not that I’m complaining about the Indian summer we have been enjoying - hopefully everyone will take advantage of the fall festivals, apple and pumpkin picking and Halloween festivities happening from one end of the island to the next. Or perhaps a simple stroll through the changing leaves is more your speed. If so, might I suggest a pair of tap shoes? It does tend to lighten the mood. Happy October everyone!

Students in Colleen Malone’s and Joanna Zalewski’s fifth-grade classes at Connetquot Central School District’s Edward J. Bosti Elementary School recently created birthday cards in hopes of putting a smile on the face of autistic savant, Beth Catlin.
Ms. Catlin possesses an incredible mind, and is able to recall the names, addresses and birth dates of thousands of people she has met throughout the years. In doing such, she creates a handmade piece of paper with the words “Happy Birthday” written on it to be sent to all the

Happy Birthday friends she has made. The fifth-graders decided that Ms. Catlin was an individual who deserved recognition, and used their creative talents to design cards to be sent out her in time for her own birthday on September 22nd.

Science and Fun Students in Connetquot Central School District’s Edward J. Bosti Elementary School were recently treated to a presentation from school assembly ventriloquist Steve Petra. His science-themed “It’s Alive” program is a fun and informative show which highlighted the functions of the human body’s most important organs. Mr. Petra’s show consisted of introducing
friendly puppets mimicking essential organs such as the brain, lungs, human heart and digestive system, each providing their own explanation of how they assist in the body’s daily functions. Throughout the presentation, students were invited to join Mr. Petra on the stage to demonstrate how each of the organs functioned. For example, a group of volunteers were asked
by “The Guts” to display the plush-version of the small intestine, which was meant to mimic its human counterpart at more than 20 feet long! Mr. Petra’s exuberant personality ensured that all staff and students in attendance were not only enjoying themselves, but also learning important scientific facts along the way.

Sheriff to be Honored On Thursday, November 9th, the non-profit agency Council for Unity will honor individuals that have made a significant impact on reducing gang violence in society at its ‘’Champions for Children Gala’’ at the Garden City Hotel.
Suffolk County Sheriff Vincent F. DeMarco will be among the honorees. Sheriff DeMarco implemented Council for Unity at the Suffolk County Jail shortly after he took office in 2006 in an effort to reduce gang violence in the Riverhead Jail. It was the
first correctional facility to embrace the program, which was developed by Robert DeSena nearly 40 years ago as a method to reduce gang-related crime in the New York City schools. The jail’s Council for Unity program was

recently worked on a tasty STEM-based activity. They collaboratively aspired to make the tallest tower they could using only spaghetti, marshmallows and their critical thinking skills. During this activity, the second-graders were able to link design, mathematics and scientific problem-solving strategies. Additionally, they strengthened their knowledge of twodimensional and threedimensional shapes while building their towers.

Sampling the programs presented at the meeting such as A Taste of Australia, Hip Pickles Percussion Ensemble, Petland Discounts -Traveling Pets
Program, and Laugh-A-Lot Poetry is beneficial to the AIE Coordinators because they get to personally immerse themselves in the experience of learning and get a firsthand account of how the arts can make a subject come alive. An educator shared that the experience was inspiring and she came away with great ideas. Another stated that she understands how the Artsin-Education programs can be integrated into core curriculums and she’s going to bring all the ideas back to her district and share them with her colleagues.
Suffolk County Police Commissioner Timothy Sini was the guest speaker at the first meeting of the Eastern Suffolk BOCES (ESBOCES) Community Legislative Committee. He addressed matters related to public safety concerns that impact Suffolk County and its schools such as the Suffolk County Police Department’s strategy
to target violent MS-13 activity, providing police officers with the overdosereversal drug NARCAN, and a training program to equip officers to deal with people with disabilities such as autism. The Community Legislative Committee is chaired by ESBOCES Board Member William K. Miller. This is the second year
that ESBOCES is hosting these meetings that take place once a month at the Bixhorn Technical Center in Bellport. Miller said, “Students, parents, ESBOCES staff members, and the community are invited to learn about issues impacting school districts. Together we can advocate for positive change.”

Assisting Hurricane Victims Due to outstanding student efforts, the Bayport-Blue Point High School community recently collected $1,901.78 to be donated to the GlobalGiving Foundation to assist victims of Hurricane Harvey and their recovery efforts. The effort was spearheaded by 11th-grade student Nikolai Dolan who was reminded of the affects that Superstorm Sandy had on the local community in 2012 after seeing footage of Hurricane Harvey in Houston, Texas. Together, with the help of
Bayport-Blue Point High School English teacher Stacie Pintar, the two brainstormed a plan to help those affected by the latest weather phenomenon. “Each day, after school, Nikolai would meet with me to count the money from the collection envelopes and to write announcements to encourage the community to continue to donate,” said Mrs. Pintar. “Prior to Open School Night, Nikolai recorded a phone message to go out to the parents in the community about our collection jar that evening. After just one week, $1,
901.78 was collected. I am very proud of Nikolai’s determination to make a difference and am grateful to the members of the school community for their generosity.” According to their website, the GlobalGiving Foundation will provide relief to survivors in the form of emergency supplies like food, water and medicine in addition to long-term recovery assistance to help residents recover and rebuild. All donations will exclusively support relief and recovery efforts from this storm.

Volunteer Opportunities The American Cancer Society is seeking volunteers in Nassau and Suffolk County to be a part of the annual Making Strides Against Breast Cancer event scheduled for Sunday, October 15th at Jones Beach and/or on Sunday, October 22nd at Suffolk County Community College, Eastern Campus, Riverhead. Rebuilding Butterfly Pop Fifth-grade students in Cathy Mongiello’s class alongside Sandra Fantauzzi’s fourth-graders at Connetquot Central School District’s Cherokee Street Elementary School are helping to repopulate the butterfly population. They are using the school’s native plant community garden, which has been named an official monarch butterfly waystation by the Monarch Watch organization. The school’s garden, which lies directly in front of the main entrance to the building, is home to a large number of dormant milkweed plants, an important source of nutritional value to
monarch caterpillars. With these milkweed plants present, large numbers of monarch butterflies were attracted to the location, and soon began to colonize and make the garden their new home. With the assistance of their teachers, the students used their scientific knowledge to classify these caterpillars, and sketched their progress in nature journals as they transformed from larvae to caterpillar, chrysalis and ultimately a beautiful butterfly. They also collected facts on the life cycle of the monarch butterfly. According to Mrs. Fantauzzi, the class is hoping to create
a photo journal of this experience to share with the community after the adult monarch butterflies take flight. “Seeing the children come out and experience what’s happening in their environment in a real time, real world setting and be able to connect to it on such a personal level is more meaningful than anything I could have done within the classroom,” said Mrs. Fantauzzi. “Being able to see the excitement within them each day in anticipation of what’s happening next has been so rewarding, both for them and myself.”
