Gwen Stefani: Just A Girl About to Take Over Las Vegas By Allison Kugel
Gwen Stefani spent her childhood and adolescence in Anaheim, California, a suburban girl living a stone’s throw from Disneyland. It was her older brother, Eric, who founded No Doubt, that would help Stefani make her way into the musical limelight with their 1995 breakout album, Tragic Kingdom. The band’s unique sound coupled with Stefani’s platinum blonde hair, red lips and punk rock fashion, brought the singer to Rockstar status in the 1990s. Her first solo album, 2004’s Love. Angel. Music. Baby. and L.A.M.B. fashion label, catapulted her into the music and style icon stratosphere in the early 2000s. Follow up albums like 2006’s The Sweet Escape and No Doubt’s 2012 reunion album, Push and Shove capped off two decades of non-stop recording and touring for the Grammy-winning artist. This summer, the hitmaking mom of Kingston, 11, Zuma, 9, and Apollo, 4, is preparing to embark on her Las Vegas Residency at Zappos Theatre at the Planet Hollywood Resort & Casino. It’s called, what else? Gwen Stefani: Just A Girl – an homage to her first single to make the Billboard Hot 100 Chart. I sat down with Gwen to discuss this new chapter in her life.
Gwen Stefani: As a mom, if you look at my touring for the last ten years, I haven’t really toured. In the past, I did tour for seven years. It’s hard with the kids, because they’re in school and I’m not home schooling. I did my last tour because I had this unexpected life crisis and then the music came pouring out of me from
Allison Kugel: What does performing live give you, personally and energetically? Gwen Stefani: Being on stage for me, I always forget how much it’s a part of who I am. I’ve done it for my whole life, pretty much. I always think I don’t want to do it. I always think it’s fine if I never do it again. Then when I get on stage, even when I’m sound checking, I’m like, “Oh My God, I love this!” I love my music, I love being up there, I love the attention and I love being able to share that love with people and get that exchange. I don’t understand why I like it so much. Allison Kugel: It feeds your soul. You’re connecting with source and you’re in a zone. Gwen Stefani: It’s my gift. It’s what I’m here for. I’m obviously at the end of my journey of being a musician… Allison Kugel: Why would you say that? Gwen Stefani: Well because of my age, and I’ve been doing it for thirty something years. It’s perfect for me to be able to do a Las Vegas show, because not only does it work for me as a mom, but it also works creatively. It’s a new challenge. It’s going to be a way to express myself and do my whole catalog of music that defines every single period in my life.
Allison Kugel: And your audience is going to get a more intimate experience with you than they would in a stadium setting. Gwen Stefani: It is a much smaller audience than I’m used to, under five thousand people. It’s going to be so different and that’s something I need. When you’ve toured for however many years I have, it’s super awesome, but let’s do something new! That’s why even doing The Voice for the last couple of years was so inspiring for me. I think everybody wants something challenging and new to look forward to. Allison Kugel: You went to see Jennifer Lopez’s Las Vegas show, All I Have. I’m assuming the two of you discussed her Las Vegas Residency. Did she give you any advice? Gwen Stefani: I’ve always looked up to Jennifer in the sense that we’re exactly the same age, and I remember when No Doubt was coming out and she hadn’t done Jenny from The Block yet, but she had that song out, Waiting for Tonight. At the time I was working with Prince and he started comparing me and Jennifer, and at that time I didn’t even see how I was in the same category with her. She was Jennifer Lopez and I was in a band called No Doubt (laughs). But now here we both are doing these residencies all these years later. She’s always invited me to her kids’ birthday parties and things like that. She is a crazy worker. I cannot believe how much she works! Allison Kugel: It doesn’t seem human, right? Multiple television shows, Las Vegas Residency, albums… Gwen Stefani: I know. I don’t understand it. Going to see her, I was studying the production of her show. The show was incredible, and she works so hard on stage. It was so inspiring to see… and scary! When I came backstage to talk to her afterwards, she comes out of the dressing room looking like a Barbie Doll. She was breathtaking on stage, but when you see her up close, it’s like, “What?! It’s not possible. You are so gorgeous!” She was just so glamorous. We talked for awhile and she was like, “Yeah, I’ve just done 100 shows…” And I’m like, “Whoa, that’s a lot of shows!” (Laughs) And she still has forty more to go. She’s really enjoyed it, but she said it is challenging. Allison Kugel: The title of your Las
Vegas show, Just A Girl, is the title of one of your biggest hits, but it has a double meaning for you. You’re always saying, “I’m just a girl from Orange County…” Is that your way of keeping yourself grounded? Gwen Stefani: Honestly, I think if you really knew me or saw my family and how I grew up, I am 100% the same person I have always been. When I wrote that song, Just A Girl, I was twenty-five years old, going to college, still living at my parent’s house, and I was very naïve. I was driving one day and I’m thinking, “Wow! I really have a different position in this world, being that I’m a female.” Allison Kugel: Has Blake Shelton (Stefani’s boyfriend of three years) had creative input with this Las Vegas show? Gwen Stefani: Obviously he’s my best friend, so I’m bouncing stuff off him all the time. He’s one of those people in my life that’s super supportive and gets me motivated. There’s a whole bunch of songs about him in the show. Like anybody, with their best friend, we share everything together. Allison Kugel: What’s your routine before you step out on stage? Do you pray? Do you meditate? How do you gear up to give your best performance? Gwen Stefani: I don’t meditate. I’m a prayer. I pray, but first I do my makeup (laughs). My makeup is huge for me. Putting on my makeup and getting ready, there is a kind of meditation in the preparation. And the praying for me is really important. We do a group prayer circle. When I think about how ordinary I’ve always been, and to think that I’ve created all these songs, I don’t know where they
come from. I always think that it’s got to be a channeling, and it just comes through me. It’s a spiritual thing that has been given to me to share. The Maurer Foundation is a local nonprofit organization that has been for over serving the community 20 years. Their mission is to save lives through breast health education that focuses on breast cancer prevention, healthy lifestyle choices, early detection and risk reduction. Responding to the need in her own practice, breast surgeon Dr. Virginia Maurer first made breast health education programs available to her patients and to their families. These programs became so successful, which encouraged her to reach out to the general public, but particularly to adolescent women through high school breast health programs. One of Dr. Maurer’s beliefs is that the choices we make early in life can affect our future beast health. Dr. Maurer actively participates as Founder, motivator and as an inspiration for this foundation. As of today, the Maurer Foundation has brought their life-saving message of breast cancer prevention and early detection to over 80% of Long Island’s Public High Schools! From reaching just over a thousand people in 1995, The Maurer Foundation, supported by steadfast board members, experienced staff and gifted volunteers, has continued to broaden their capacity, allowing them to reach hundreds of thousands of people! Through partnerships, they educate the public to strive toward their goal to be recognized as the leading source of current and accurate breast health information! The Maurer Foundation is holding their Cocktails for a Cause event, which will take place on October 23rd at Havana Central Restaurant from 6-8PM.

As I write this column on a Friday morning, my mind is already filled with the promise of tranquility, relaxation and family time that Saturday and Sunday brings. Ah… the finish line at last; it’s Friday! “TGIF,” or as Rihanna says, “Cheers to the Freakin’ Weekend!” For those of us that lead hectic, multi-tasking lives during the week, you know exactly what I’m talking about. The promise of a Friday, and the relief it brings, is necessary for re-centering our spirits and re-charging our batteries. I think we can all agree that there is nothing wrong with loving Fridays. However, I want to encourage everyone reading this to… wait for it… also love Mondays. Don’t hate me. I’ll never forget a New York Times article I read years ago that ominously stated, “Heart Attacks Are More Common on Mondays.” Why would more heart attacks happen on a Monday? It’s just
another day of the week. The “why” is in our perception and our anticipation of what Monday means. Dr. Joe Dispenza, a prominent researcher in the field of the mind/body connection, famously explains, “Thoughts are the domain of the mind, while feelings are the domain of the body.” In other words, our brain processes the fact that it’s Monday, our mind creates a thought and a story around that fact, and then our body reacts to the story our mind tells us. Follow? If we tell ourselves that Monday is the start of “another long, stress-filled week,” our body will then react to that negative story we are telling the mind. You can probably trace this back to when you were a kid and dreading having to return to school on Monday, after a funfilled and carefree weekend. This thought pattern is a habit, nothing more. Let’s re-frame the story we tell ourselves about Monday. Monday is a new opportunity to put all of that inspiration and clarity you’ve gained during the weekend to work for you. It’s a new day
to create a more successful, empowered outcome than you experienced the previous week. Let’s look at it this way: weekends are for rest and relaxation, while Mondays are for action and innovation. Isn’t that a better story to tell ourselves about Monday? If you begin repeating this affirmation to yourself enough times, your mind will start to integrate it, and your body will begin to respond inkind. I can’t tell you how many times I was enjoying a relaxing, fun-filled weekend when I was unexpectedly struck with an AhHa moment. Suddenly, I was champing at the bit for Monday morning, so that I could put this lightning bolt of inspiration to work in a new and exciting way. Mondays are the days that dreams are made of. Make that call, send that email, present that idea, and when another Friday rolls around, celebrate all you’ve accomplished by treating yourself to a fabulous weekend.

The symptoms may last several weeks, and neurological effects may be permanent. Individuals, especially those 50 years of age or older, or those with compromised immune systems, who are most at risk, are urged to take precautions to avoid being bitten by mosquitoes. To avoid mosquito bites, residents are advised to: Minimize outdoor activities between dusk
and dawn. Wear shoes and socks, long pants and long-sleeved shirts when mosquitoes are active.water a Use mosquito repellent, following label directions carefully. West Nile Virus In Suffolk County Suffolk County Health Commissioner Dr. James Tomarken announced today that three new mosquito samples tested positive for West Nile virus. The samples, all Culex pipiens-restuans, were collected on September 13th from Amityville, Jamesport, and Shelter Island. To date, the county has reported one horse, 135 mosquito samples and 10 birds have tested positive for West Nile Virus. The county has also reported three human cases of West Nile virus to date this year. West Nile virus, first detected in birds and mosquito samples in Suffolk County in 1999 and again each year thereafter, is transmitted to humans by the bite of an infected mosquito. “Though the temperatures are getting cooler, mosquitoes may still be active for several more weeks this year,” said

The Importance of Respect Students of all grade levels at John Pearl Elementary School in the Connetquot Central School District were recently visited by Richard Specht of the ReesSpecht Life Foundation for an informative presentation about the importance of paying forward good deeds and respecting others. digital display of songs and storytelling, Mr. Specht spoked to the students about making a commitment to the community and demonstrating compassion and respect for others. “Mr. Specht inspired students at John Pearl to spread kindness to family and friends,” said John Pearl Elementary School

Showcasing Artistic Skills First- through fifthgrade students at John Pearl Elementary School in Connetquot Central School District recently contributed their artistic talents to a beautiful mural which now resides in the school’s hallway, inspired by the popular children’s book “The Dot” by Peter H. Reynolds. Students in Krystal
Zaglool’s art classes linked the book’s thematic elements to the district’s mindfulness initiative by discussing the benefits of having a positive mindset. The young artists then collaborated with their art supplies in hand to leave their mark on a series of six large paintings, which have since been colorfully decorated and secured
safely on display the schools’ hallways. “The Dot” tells the story of a young student named Vashti, who after doubting her artistic ability comes to realize that a series of the smallest marks can sometimes lead to the biggest and most beautiful of creations.
Sayville International Peace Day “Today, Peace Day 2018,” Sayville Superintendent Dr. John E Stimmel remarked in his speech, “our students have been called upon by their teachers to imagine peace in their homes, peace in their community, and peace in the world. To honor this day, our students across the district have created works of art and beauty, have prepared displays of peace to inspire all who enter our schools,
and, for those students who have turned 18 or are about to, have been given a most precious gift, a gift that is bestowed upon all citizens of our great land - a voter registration application.” Among some of the activities at each of the schools, Lincoln Avenue Elementary students created a music video that has been posted on the school district website.
Sayville Middle School eighth-graders, in Ms. Tiffany Pontieri’s Studio in Art class, were inspired to promote their messages of peace in chalk. Club Day Fair Students from Bellport High School’s diverse extracurricular organizations gathered in the school’s courtyards on September 21st, during Club Day, to tout their activities and draw new recruits. Resembling a fair, representatives from student council, Athletes Helping Others, Yearbook, and other
student organizations, were on hand to discuss each of their organization’s purposes and to invite peers to attend a meeting or sign up for membership. Club Day adviser Ellen Hoffman said students can choose from twenty-nine clubs. The goal of Club Day was to let students become more informed about the extracurricular activities
and organizations offered at the high school. “These clubs truly reflect the diversity of the students,” Ms. Hoffman said. “We want the students to know that there is more to high school than academics, and that there are activities they can pursue after the school day.”

Spreading Peace Among Peers Spreading peace took precedence in Nicole Stumpf and Bianca Ferranteli’s kindergarten class at Lynwood Avenue Elementary School in the Sachem Central School District as students participated in activities celebrating the International Day of Peace,
on September 21st. The day’s activities began with students reading The Peace Book by Todd Parr, and learning the meaning of peace. The kindergartners then collectively brainstormed how they can bring peace to their classroom. Together, the students determined
that sharing, making friends, listening to each other, and being kind were all ways to have a peaceful classroom environment. Concluding the activities, students spongepainted peace signs on paper plates, incorporating vibrant colors into their crafts.

Suffolk School Safety Measures Suffolk County Legislator Rob Trotta, a retired Suffolk County Police Detective and former member of the FBI's Long Island Gang Task Force, has introduced legislation to establish a policy whereby, when practical, schools be used as Police Department relief points to decrease the chance that a criminal act will be committed, and to increase the probability that a police
car will be nearby in the event of an emergency at a school. Currently, it is the practice of the Police Department to use local fire departments as relief points for its patrol cars. “I have introduced this legislation, which will not cost anything to the taxpayer, as another measure to ensure the safety of our students, teachers and school staff,” said Legislator Rob Trotta.
The entire Republican Caucus supports this proposal. “By utilizing schools across Suffolk County, our police units will be more visible, and will enhance school safety and the relationship with school personnel,” added Trotta. Legislator Robert Trotta represents the 13th Legislative District, which includes Smithtown, Fort Salonga, Kings Park, San
Remo, Nissequogue, Head of the Harbor, and St. James; as well as most of East Northport and parts of Northport and Commack. Legislator Trotta serves on the Legislature’s Economic Development, Parks & Recreation and Veterans Committees.

Dancing Classrooms South Country Central School District fifthgraders entered and exited the gymnasium in the escort position, two-by two, and linked arm-in-arm, during a physical education dance unit taught by Dancing Classrooms of Long Island. “The escort position shows honor and respect, two ideals that go hand in hand with learning ballroom dance,” teaching artist Jessica Heins explained to the Frank P. Long Intermediate School students during their first lesson on September 17th. First positioned in a
circle, the students learned core moves that form the basis of the Merengue, Fox Trot, Rhumba, Tango, Swing, Heal-toe Polka and the Waltz. Ms. Heins, along with accompanying teaching artists, Angela Trivigno and Christina Stiriz, also explained the importance of being a good partner, while students paired off to try their new steps. In addition to great exercise, the goal of the ballroom dance unit is to provide additional opportunities for students to hone teamwork, develop respect for their peers
and invoke elegance in movement. With the introduction of each dance, the students also learn about diverse cultures. After their first lesson, students were instructed to each write a letter to Dancing Classroom, explaining what they learned, how they feel about the program and what they expected prior to their first lesson.
