Red Cross Grant The American Red Cross has awarded a $60,000 grant to The Disability Opportunity Fund to support longterm recovery services for people with disabilities and their families affected by Superstorm Sandy. The Disability Opportunity Fund (The DOF) will use the grant to help 50 families develop housing solutions and

largest U.S. operation by the Red Cross in more than five years, and thanks to the public’s generous support, the Red Cross has received $307 million in donations for Sandy emergency relief and recovery efforts. As of mid-July, the Red Cross has spent or committed $260 million – 85 percent of the donated funds. Donations to the American Red Cross after Superstorm Sandy have led to clear signs of progress and hope through New York and New Jersey 11 months after the storm. As of September, the Red Cross has partnered with and funded numerous communitybased organizations to support the recovery of individuals and families affected by Sandy. These partners include Brooklyn Community Foundation, City Harvest, Feeding America, Food Bank For New York City, Friends

of Rockaway, Health and Welfare Council of Long Island, Henry Street Settlement, Island Harvest, Jewish Community Council of Rockaway Peninsula, Local Initiatives Support Corporation, National Baptist Convention USA, National Volunteer Organizations Active in Disasters, New York Disaster Interfaith Services, Operation Hope, Points of Light Foundation, Salvation Army, Save the Children, The Staten Island Foundation, United Way of Long Island and Visiting Nurse Service of New York on Sandy recovery efforts in the areas of housing assistance, case management, mental health services, volunteer coordination, and food security. Additional community grants will be announced in the weeks ahead.

Angela’s House, a local non-profit that assists families caring for medically fragile children is celebrating the children moving into their new home located in Stony Brook. They will having a Golf Outing at Willow Creek Golf and Country Club in Mount Sinai on Monday, October 7th. ADRC’s Executive Director and CEO, Mary Ann Malack-Ragona, announced today that twenty-seven sites across Nassau and Suffolk will participate in the Center’s 2013-2014 Art Expression Program developed for individuals with a diagnosis of Alzheimer’s Disease. ADRC has been coordinating this very special program since 2003. The program includes training for professional coordinators, with ongoing support throughout the program year. The program culminates with ADRC’s Annual Tea and Art Exhibit where the paintings created by the Alzheimer’s artists are on display. Family friends and relatives are invited to the Annual event, and the event is open to the public. “It is always amazing to see the completed artwork because in many cases our Alzheimer’s artists are

unable to verbalize but are able to put their thoughts, feelings and emotions into their artwork,” states Ms. Malack-Ragona. Ms. Malack-Ragona further states, “The purpose of the Art Expression Program is to stimulate the mind through creation, and strengthen self-esteem and relationships.” Individuals participating in the program work in small groups and in a nonjudgmental environment where process is more important than the finished product. A Memorable Occasion and many others. It was truly an intense experience. That night, at Post 1738, we came together to share stories and receive awards. Delivering a speech in front of them was

even more anxiety provoking. The eight of us found ourselves recollecting a week that served as the highlight of our summer and the spark for our patriotism. For me, staring at all of my heroes was truly a test of both my resolve and my public speaking abilities! We were in the presence of the people

that make our great nation run. Without the officials who were present, our society would be nothing. After giving my speech, I returned to the seat beside my mother and trembled at the thought of the journey I had just finished. My road with Boys’ State has come to an end, but my pride in our country has just germinated. At the end of the night, I received a Congressional Certificate of Merit, a Proclamation and a multitude of other awards; but mostly, a sense of American Patriotism. I would like to conclude by thanking American Legion Post 1738, the political figures who give me the hope for a greater nation, and the men and women who have given their lives for the United States of America.

On September 24th, eight boys and girls were awarded several honors for attending and excelling at Boys’ State and Girls’ State. I am proud to say that I am one of these eight. From the moment we walked into Post 1738, we were greeted by men in ties with our national colors. The podium was even emblazoned with an American pattern. The event started with a prayer, pledge and the reservation of a chair in the corner for those who remain missing after all of America’s combat. We found ourselves in a room full of legionnaires, overachievers and politicians, such as Senator Phil Boyle, Suffolk County Treasurer Angie Carpenter, Congressman Peter King, Assemblyman Joseph Saladino, Suffolk County Legislator Thomas Barraga

Caregiver Classes Good Samaritan Hospital Medical Center will be hosting Powerful Tools for Caregivers, a six-week course new to the Long Island region. Classes will meet on consecutive Wednesdays from October 16th to November 20th, from 6 to 8:30 p.m. in the hospital’s Administrative Conference Room. This series gives caregivers the skills and confidence to better manage their own well-being, while assisting loved ones. Caregivers will be taught how to reduce stress, improve self-confidence, better communicate feelings and locate helpful resources. Fall Boating Safety Tips Autumn’s arrival doesn’t mean the boating and fishing season has to come to an end. Quite the contrary! Most anglers will tell you that some of the year’s best fishing occurs in the fall, and boaters agree that leaf-peeping while slowly cruising through calm, mirror-like waters takes on an almost ethereal quality. However, the arrival of fall’s shorter days and

colder temperatures does require boaters to take some extra precautions in order to ensure a safe and enjoyable outing for all. With this in mind, the Sea Tow Foundation, a nonprofit organization created to promote boating safety, offers the following six tips for boaters and anglers who go out on the water this fall. Update your charts. Local aids to navigation

like channel markers and buoys placed by local authorities may be pulled as early as October in some areas. With autumn’s shorter days, you also may wind up cruising home after dark, making even familiar landmarks hard to spot. Make sure your charts – electronic and paper – are up to date so you can use them to navigate instead of visual aids. Check nav lights and

flares. Make sure that your boat’s navigation lights are in working order and your emergency flares are not past their expiration date. Carry a couple of waterproof flashlights onboard to help you unload passengers and gear at the dock or boat ramp after dark, and be sure to stock spare batteries. Make sure your VHF is working. During the fall, the waterways are less

crowded. While this is peaceful, it also means that if you run into a problem, you might not see another boater. You can use your VHF radio to call for help even in spots where your cell phone has no signal. Use Sea Tow’s free Automated Radio Check system to ensure the radio is working properly – to find the right VHF channel for your area, visit www. seatow.com/boating-safety/ automated-radio-checks. Gas up before you go. With fewer boats on the water, some fuel docks may close early during the fall season. Don’t assume you can fill up at your destination for the return trip home. Wear a life jacket. In the autumn, as water temperatures start to fall, boaters who accidentally fall overboard run an increased risk of hypothermia. While children under 13 must wear a life jacket when

the boat is underway by law, it’s a good idea for adults to wear them, too – especially at night. Purchase life jackets with lights attached so rescuers can find you in the water. Make sure they fit over your bulky “fall layers” – jackets, sweatshirts, etc. If you don’t have a life jacket, you can borrow a life jacket for free from one of the 160+ Sea Tow Foundation life jacket loaner stations. Find one near you at www. boatingsafety.com. Keep a “weather eye”. Autumn storms can approach swiftly, and often seem more menacing than summer rain showers. If you have a smartphone, download the Sea Tow App at www.seatow.com/ app. Boaters can use this free app to get up-to-date weather forecasts, as well as tides and navigation information. It also lets you call for help with the swipe of a finger.

The headline has been used countless times by every media outlet imaginable to commemorate the retirement of a living legend, New York Yankees closer Mariano Rivera. But it’s fitting. So very fitting. Yankee fan or not, as we have seen over the last few weeks – the entire season, really – there is no one who can deny the pure talent, the class and dignity with which this man played the game for 19 seasons. In city after city, members of opposing teams eagerly lined up to honor a pitcher the likes of which this game will never see again. Plaques and gifts were presented, generous donations were

made to his charitable organization and crowds rose to their feet in extended standing ovations, marveling at their good fortune at being able to witness a slice of history. Of course, no one does pomp and circumstance quite like the New York Yankees themselves. I was fortunate to be a member of the sellout crowd who turned out for the team’s official sendoff to the Sandman, on Sunday, September 22nd, 2013. What an amazing display of affection from the team, past players, managers, coaches – and the fans, who seemed to not want the opening ceremony to end. The last player to ever wear the #42 had his number retired alongside the greats in Monument Park, surrounded

by the family of the original #42, Jackie Robinson. Metallica entered the field to perform the “Sandman’s” selfappointed theme song live, as Mo ran out to greet the members of the former World Championship teams who lined the diamond. It was perfect, just like Mariano had been so many times before. What a priceless memory, up there right along with the countless classic moments he had helped orchestrate throughout the years. Nineteen seasons – pretty much the entire duration of my time as a baseball fan. That’s an absence that’s pretty difficult to get over. Baseball, quite simply, will never be the same for me. Sayville students in Cherry Avenue Elementary school created Peace Flags in art class to send wishes of peace, serenity, and happiness to friends and loved ones in the community. This art project, which coincided with the International Day of Peace, allowed the students to express their individual thoughts about peace in the world. The concept of Peace Flags is based on the 2,000-year-old Tibetan Prayer Flags tradition. For

Tibetan Buddhists, these hanging flags represented prayers that were carried by the wind to bring blessings to all. By using woodblocks to carve the designs, the “prayers” were transferred to cloth for display. They hung the flags over mountain passes and rivers to benefit all who would pass underneath. The Cherry Avenue students learned that the use of colors held significance for the five elements: blue for sky or space; white for air or

clouds; red for fire; green for water and yellow for earth. The students also learned about the two styles of prayer flags: horizontal ones, called Lung ta (Wylie: rlung-rta, meaning “Wind Horse”) in Tibetan, and vertical ones, called Darchor (Wylie: darlcog, meaning “flagstaff”). Art Teacher Robin Laxton encouraged passers-by to “enjoy these artful creations of peace, made by the peacemakers of Cherry.”

Each year, the United Nations picks a theme for celebrating International Day of Peace - a movement to recognize efforts, great and small, which promote peace. This year, as the UN recognized the “power of education” to build tolerant societies that foster global citizenship, officials called “for greater investment in quality education and to reverse trends which show aid for schools and teachers dipping for the first time in a decade.” United Nations Secretary-General Ban Ki-moon remarked, “Let us invest in the schools and teachers that will build a fair and inclusive world that embraces diversity. Let us fight for peace and defend it with all our might.” Districtwide, Sayville students have traditionally prepared for the annual event in a variety of ways. Pinwheel Power Makes Statement at Sayville High School & Middle School: The Sayville Art Department continues promoting peace with their projects. Art teacher Jen Berotti (who had spearheaded the Pinwheels for Peace Project at the Middle School for many years) worked with colleague Evan Hammer (who also launched Pinwheels at the High School) to create this year’s outdoor display at the High School. Pinwheels designed by the students were artfully inscribed with messages of peace. Throughout the school day, High School art classes convened on the front lawn to journal their thoughts about peace, collaborated on a community art piece, and after, planted pinwheels to form an enormous peace sign. “This year we incorporated the Common Core standards by discussing, debating, ‘ journaling,’ and sketching our ideas on ways to promote peace in our

Coinciding with Gandhi’s Birthday, Lincoln Avenue Physical Education teachers Elizabeth Bolger and Gary Jenson held a canned-food drive for the community to collect items for the Sayville Food Pantry, and on a designated day, everyone at Lincoln Avenue wore white. Outside, in the library courtyard at Sunrise Drive, the First- through Fifthgrade students formed a broad circle. As the Kindergarten children paraded into the courtyard, the circle parted, like opened arms, allowing the youngest to pass through and form their own inner circle - symbolically embraced in welcome by Sunrise Drive’s peaceful family. After taking the Peace Pledge together and singing their Peace Song, each class took turns to share a unique peace promise with the entire assembly. Unlike in parts of the world afflicted by poverty and strife, educational excellence is available here in Sayville School District. Through the UN’s annual appeal for Peace, everyone in Sayville schools renews their pledge to refrain from bullying and behaviors that cause harm. The Sayville School District community knows that a quality education has great power to not only teach our children about nonviolence and tolerance, but encourage them yearlong to perform community service and random acts of kindness. Our future depends on what our children learn now: as the saying goes, “practice makes perfect!”
