Mrs. Adams read a book titled Olaf’s 1-2-3, in which a character from Disney’s animated movie Frozen counts to ten using components of his snowman body, beginning with his carrot nose. Mrs. Adams read and interacted with the young students while celebrating literacy.

Participating patriotically in Sylvan Avenue Elementary School’s Flag Day contest this past June was nothing new for Bayport-Blue Point School District student Jessica Schaller, but a special gift she earned from her congressman proved unique. Each year, Sylvan Avenue celebrates Flag Day with contests – poster drawing for grades K-2, essay writing for grades 3-5 – revolving around the topic “What the Flag Means to Me,” with winners selected from
each grade level. The six winning students read their essays and display their posters at the day’s assembly, receiving prizes like American flag beach towels, donated by the school’s PTA. Schaller was the winner for the fourth grade. Schaller’s mother sent her daughter’s winning entry to Rep. Peter King, who honored Schaller and the essay by sending her a flag that had been flown over the Capitol Building in Washington, D.C. in July. “I think I’m pretty lucky for this to happen at such
a young age,” said Schaller, now a fifth-grader. “It’s something I can treasure forever.” The flag now hangs in the second-floor window of the Sylvan Avenue building, proudly displayed next to the accompanying certificate and Schaller’s essay, both matted by art teacher Carly Gayer.

that made even the daring wonder - how does he ride that, or better yet, how does he get off it? Surprises kept coming with seven Storm Troopers, Lilly Hayes the Balloon Sculpturist, Cookie and Scoop from Sweet Frogs all lending themselves out to photo opportunities with more than willing fans. Children enjoyed free face painting, pony rides, bounce houses, crafts and more. The crowd was thoroughly entertained by the sounds of the popular band, Next Tuesday, and everyone had a great time. Special thanks to the Sheriff’s Department, Hagerman’s Fire Department, the US Army as well as the Suffolk County Emergency AHRT vehicle, who all made their presence known with various contributions, which undoubtedly left our visitors impressed by their skills.

Along with the Hospital, there were service and fraternal organizations and community outreach in attendance. The Pilots club gave away bicycle helmets, while Make a Wish Foundation gave whimsical socks out to bring attention to their respective missions. Once again, Family Fun Day was a terrific success. On Saturday, September 20th, the Hospital was able to showcase some of its excellent service lines and educate the community in an entertaining fashion. The nurses from the Professional Development Department instructed children and adults alike on Emergency CPR, while the Nursing Administration set up a game of “operation” that included skills with forceps that rewarded a successful operation with a candy treat! Other departments were just as creative in their attempts to teach and entertain while others strictly went for the sheer fun of “Family Fun Day” with craft making and activities. Special guests Frank and Karlyn Grasso stopped by to make a presentation with a super-sized check in the amount of $100,000 on behalf of the John

they had inserted them in protective plastic sleeves, they organized them in binders. • For the Town of Islip Senior Center, Ashley, Kaity, and Logan assembled the silverware service by rolling a fork, knife, spoon, and straw in a napkin and setting them up on the trays. They created centerpieces for the tables, put out the table cloths, sliced bananas and made punch for the summer party, and assisted the seniors with a recreational painting activity. • In the Bristol Assisted Living facility, their job training included folding clean linens from the laundry and dusting the furniture. Gaining insights about

the water balloons, tidying the area by wiping the tables, weeding, even feeding the fish in the ponds. • At Stop & Shop, they stocked the shelves and helped customers by bagging groceries. • At theMaritime Museum, their career development included sorting, organizing, and making inventory for the museum gift shop and supply room. In addition, they dusted museum items indoors and picked up litter on the grounds. • Through the Special Education Department at the Sayville Administration Building, the Sayville students worked for the Public Relations office, sorting and filing by date the hundreds of newspaper articles and press releases about the school district. Summertime for three Sayville students involved in the Career Development and Functional Academics Program offered them more than ONE summer job opportunity. Over a sixweek period, Ashley, Kaity, and Logan were introduced to “on-the-job” learning experiences at six different settings. Within diverse work environments, they consistently acquired hands-on skills, developing career awareness, task orientation, and socialization skills. No matter what the venue each week, the students enjoyed their assignments: • At the Long Island Sports Plex the students first met with the supervisor to discuss their job duties for the week which included setting up the mini golf flags and table umbrellas, making inventory of the golf clubs, filling

At the end of the week, the students regrouped for academic skills in a classroom setting. Their reading curriculum reinforced signs and words
they learned on the jobs. Working at the mini golf at the Sports Plex was Logan’s favorite work site. “Everyone there was so nice to me. I would like to get a job there after school. I enjoyed putting the flags in the holes and counting, sorting and organizing the golf balls and golf clubs for inventory.” Ashley found “sorting the jewelry and making sure the museum
was cleaned and ready for museum guests” at the Maritime Museum was her preference, while Kaitlyn enjoyed the feeling of satisfaction she had stocking the shelves and bagging the groceries at Stop & Shop. With all the fun they had learning new things, the students hope they will be able to do it again next year. In addition, for “their
determination and commitment to bettering their lives and the lives of others” at the Joyce Fitzpatrick Senior Center, Islip Town Supervisor Tom Croci and the Islip Town Board honored the three Sayville students at a Town Board Meeting Sayville Transition Coordinator Claire Rymer, Sayville Summer Program teacher Amanda Acevedo,

The Greater Patchogue Chamber of Commerce, Inc., one of the largest chambers in the metropolitan area, will host its Fall Festival on Saturday, October 18th, from 12 noon to 5 p.m. on Main Street in downtown Patchogue. The Chamber will also host Halloween Happenings on Friday, October 31st, from 3 to 6 p.m. To celebrate the season, this year’s Fall Festival will include a petting zoo, pony rides, pumpkin decorating, face painting, live music, balloons and vendors. A costume parade for children, 12 years-old and younger, will begin at 2 p.m. in front of Capitol One Plaza. A chili and chowder contest will also take place in conjunction with the Festival. Goodie bags will be available for the first 200 children in attendance.

The Islip Town Board today voted to formalize its Language Access Policy in an effort to accommodate all Islip Town residents, regardless of the language they speak. The formal policy calls for the Division of Constituent Services to ensure that interpreter services can be available to accommodate constituents who require language interpretation assistance. Many of these practices have long been in place
in the Town, but will be further executed and promoted to the public via the Town’s official website, social media sites, and e-alert services. “It is of great importance that we are able to communicate to all our residents and visitors to Islip. These language services will offer us the opportunity to convey vital information to all,” said Islip Town Supervisor Tom Croci.
For those in need of interpreter services who wish to speak at a public meeting, it is requested that the resident contact Constituent Services at least one week prior to the meeting, so that arrangements can be made to have an interpreter of the appropriate language present. for those of us on the other side of the phone, it can be downright maddening. Over the course of the last several weeks, I have had the good fortune of being in touch with representatives from three major companies and one federal agency. As polite as the majority of them have been, there is simply no substitute for good oldfashioned efficiency. From poor line conditions that make it sound as though you’ve been patched through to another planet, to computer screens that keep
any issues are ever resolved. What always gets me is the directory, which instructs you to select your issue and what department you would like to speak with; yet, once you actually reach a human after “longer than normal wait times,” they never seem to know what your call is in reference to. And after repeated calls, and numerous notations on the account in question, it would stand to reason that you shouldn’t have to re-explain the entire problem from the beginning. And yet…

At the end of one of these service calls, which stretched over approximately three hours (yes, you read that correctly), the woman on the other end actually took the time out to thank me, saying my patience showed a lot about my character. Well, if dealing with customer service builds character, I think I’ve reached my quota for quite a while!

Aspell and Zalak became increasingly suspicious of something being wrong when they did not hear from their neighbor and club member, Florence Eileen Housman. In noticing that she was not following any
of her daily routines, they quickly notified the police of the situation. Housman was fortunately able to get the urgent medical care she was in need of. It is due to their diligence, consideration, and concern that a long-time friend and Friendly Senior member was able to receive the aid she needed to make a full recovery.

Band Of Brothers The Villanova Rugby team is an organization that has gone through many twists and turns in its history. It was disbanded for a few years, only to come back stronger than ever. This year, the Villanova Rugby Football Club is on the road to a playoff finish. In our first three games, we played some of the best teams in the country. Notre Dame College and Towson are the two favorites to win it all this year. We played both of these teams, and although we lost, gave them a run for their money. This weekend, we are set to take on
Lock Haven. Under the guidance of four new coaches, the Rugby Team is finally gaining respect on campus. We practice five days a week in the hopes that we can win matches. It’s a violent sport, and many of our guys have gotten injured. There are no pads in rugby, so players face a huge risk. During a game, there are fifteen large men on the other team who want to hurt you. If you have the ball, you need to move. There is no stoppage in play. If the ball carrier goes down, a ruck is formed, and the teams fight for the ball. As the Tighthead Prop,
I’m expected to get in on all of the rucks. I do this willingly, because my teammate is often at the bottom of that pile. I look out for them, and they look out for me. Its a bond that we’ve developed on the Rugby Team. The other players have been like an extended family to me. I’m really liking this team, and I hope that I can play on it for the next four years. Villanova has really proven to be a good fit for me. I like that sense of brotherhood, and the Rugby Team is full of fun people.

CELEBRATING ITALIAN HERITAGE - Residents at McPeak’s Assisted Living gathered together to celebrate their Italian heritage in honor of the upcoming Patchogue Italian Festival of St. Liberata, which will take place on September 27th. The festival will feature a day of Italian music and food, and celebrate Italian culture. Some of the McPeak’s residents attended the original St. Liberata Italian Festival, which began in 1923. The event is a precursor to the Feast of San Gennaro, which was first held in New York City in 1926 - three years after the Italian Festival of St. Liberata.
In conjunction with the NYS Department of Environmental Conservation, the Town of Islip announces that its Draft Material Removal Work Plan for Roberto Clemente Park has been made available on a special link on its website at www.townofislip-ny. gov. Additional information about additional public participation is forthcoming. “As promised, we have submitted our work plan to the proper regulatory agency and have continued our regular communication with the public and interested agencies throughout this process. Our goal for the recovery process is to begin cleanup of illegally placed materials as soon as New York State DEC grants us the approval to begin,” Supervisor Tom Croci stated. The Town installed two

Strength For Life Continued From 17 Long Island Cancer Wellness Center, and our newest locations at the Southampton Hospital, the Dolan Family Center and the Commack JCC. We have reached out to Peconic and Brookhaven and this grant gives us the confidence we can support all these endeavors and then some. Strength for Life is very active with support groups throughout Long Island and we are on the advisory committee for the Suffolk County Cancer Awareness Task Force. In addition, we were voted 2013 LIWA (Long Island Women’s Agenda) Organization of the Year and we are proud to share that Strength for Life has a ‘5’ star rating on “Great Non Profits” with comments from our clients stating they had a “life changing”, “powerful” and “nurturing” experience. We will be hosting our 13th Wellness Retreat next weekend at the Hyatt Windwatch in Hauppauge, offering 20 new cancer
patients/survivors an overnight escape from their daily responsibilities and renewal of mind, body and spirit offered by our array of classes. They will be introduced to many complementary therapies including Yoga, Reiki, Meditation, Sound and Energy Healing and Feng Shui. We always say we may bring them together but they are what make the magic happen – the camaraderie at these retreats is ‘priceless.” Since we are a small grassroots nonprofit, relying heavily on our fundraising events, this very generous grant from the Island Outreach Foundation will help fund our future retreats, our extended classes and the equipment we provide to each survivor so they may continue their exercise prescription at home.
