How to Take a More Active Role in Your Personal Health annual • Schedule physicals. Annual physicals are one of the simplest and most effective ways for individuals to take active roles in their personal health. Many health insurance plans cover annual physical exams at no cost to policy holders, and these examinations can uncover issues even when individuals are not feeling any symptoms. Annual physicals also provide great opportunities for individuals to discuss diet and healthy lifestyle choices with their physicians in relaxed settings. about the • Learn preventive services that are right for you. Screening guidelines are often age-based, but they also take personal history and family history into account. Access to fitness facilities may be limited or unavailable during the pandemic, but that should not deter people from exercising regularly. Walking, jogging, hiking, and cycling are great forms of cardiovascular exercise that have been linked to a host of health benefits. A proactive approach to personal health is simple and effective, potentially helping people reduce their risk for a variety of diseases and conditions.

For Long Island, Inc.
The West Islip Breast Cancer Coalition for Long Island, Inc. (WIBCC) is a non-profit grassroots organization that was founded in 1992. They work to eradicate Breast Cancer and gynecological cancers. Their mission is to provide support services to women undergoing treatment and requiring post-mastectomy care with their “Lead A Helping Hand” program, and to actively promote cancer and environmental awareness with education, advocacy and outreach throughout the community.
To accomplish their mission, they focus on prevention, research, education, services, their Lend a Helping Hand program and awareness. This coalition serves all of Long Island, not just West Islip, and has remained open throughout the pandemic. They helped serve those in need during this pandemic by giving them food and gas gift cards, as well as assistance with living expenses. They are grateful for involvement from local businesses that have held fundrasier events for them and even donated goods to their organization. This September they are part of Stop & Shop’s Community Bag Program, where they will receive a $1 donation every time a $2.50 reusable Community Bag is purchased at 400 Union Blvd in West Islip, unless otherwise directed by the customer through the Giving Tag attached to the bag. Additionally, they are participating in John’s Crazy Socks Giving Back Program, which started September 1st and will run through October 31st. John’s Crazy Socks is a father-son social enterprise that was
inspired by John Lee Cronin, a young man with Down Syndrome and his love of colorful and fun socks, or what he calls his “crazy socks”. John’s Crazy Socks has agreed to donate 10% of their net sales to WIBCC for every pair of socks purchased from their website, www. johnscrazysocks.com, when you enter the charity code FG-WIBCC20. Next month they will present Pink Flags of October, a month-long event to honor and remember those affected by Breast Cancer. Hundreds of pink flags will be placed at the entrance of Good Samaritan Hospital. You have the opportunity to purchase a ribbon in honor of or in memory of someone whose life has been affected by Breast Cancer. These ribbons will be tied to the flags and together the flags and ribbons will fly for the entire month of October. The role individuals play in their own health care became more prominent in 2020. As a global pandemic forced people from all walks of life to prioritize their personal health each time they left their homes, many individuals sought ways to take a more active role in their health care. Proactive health care has long been touted by medical professionals, though many people still don’t take such recommendations to heart. In fact, a recent report from the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention estimated that as much as 75 percent of health care spending in the United States is reactive in nature, meaning that money is going toward treating conditions and diseases rather than preventing them from occurring in the first place. Taking an active role in your own health care is easier than people may think. And the benefits of such a proactive approach are numerous, including a reduced risk for various diseases.

Jennifer Turner Receives 2020 All-Star Staff Award

McPeak’s Assisted Living has announced that Jennifer Turner, Assistant Administrator/ Case Manager, received the 2020 All-Star Staff Award from the Empire State Association of Assisted Living. The award is given to those heroes in the assisted living community who often accomplish the seemingly impossible or are always there when they are needed the most. Ms. Turner consistently communicated with McPeak’s staff members every step of the way during the COVID-19 pandemic. She alerted the staff of the latest guidelines from the New York State Department of Health and made sure McPeak’s followed the mandated protocols and new procedures in order to safeguard the health of the staff and its residents.
Ms. Turner joined McPeak’s in 2003 as a Receptionist. In 2006, she met the qualifications required by the New York State Health Department to become a Case Manager. A resident of Bay Shore, she earned her Associate’s degree in Business Administration from Briarcliffe College and her Bachelor’s degree in Health Care Administration from Empire State College. “I am honored to receive this award,” Ms. Turner said. “It is nice to be recognized for the hard work that has been put in to make sure the McPeak’s continues to make the health and safety of its residents and staff its top priority.” “We congratulate Jennifer upon receiving this award,” Mr. McPeak said. “Because of her constant communication
with the staff on the latest safety protocols, McPeak’s has been COVID-free since June. Her obsession with disease prevention benefits the residents and the staff every day.” The awards were presented in conjunction with National Assisted Living Week. Established by the National Center for Assisted Living® (NCAL) in 1995, National Assisted Living Week recognizes the role of assisted living in caring for America’s seniors and individuals with disabilities. This weeklong celebration inspires assisted living communities around the country to offer various events and activities to celebrate the residents they serve, as well as educate the public about assisted living,
PAYING TRIBUTE TO PATRIOTS - Members of the Oakdale-Bohemia Middle School community recently gathered on school grounds to create a memorial to all those who lost their lives on Sept. 11, 2001. Organized by the school’s Patriot Day Committee under the direction of English Language Arts teacher Patty Alway, the memorial featured 3,000 American flags, which were purchased with funds they had collected last school year. Bolger Receives the NYS AHPERD “Joy of Effort” Award Dr. Clancy Seymour, President of NYS AHPERD, recently announced that Sayville Lincoln Avenue PE teacher Coach Beth Bolger is the recipient of the NYS AHPERD Joy of Effort Award. The award will be presented at the NYS AHPERD Awards Dinner in March 2021 at the yearly conference in Verona, NY. The Joy of Effort Award recognizes those Physical Education instructors who exemplify passion and delight in their work and who are inspired by a commitment to a joy-filled experience. The recipients of this award have made every educational effort, through their words, actions and deeds, to enhance the lives of their students. They have achieved the goals and objectives of quality health education, physical education, recreation or dance programs because what they do is a labor of
love. As a recent example of Coach Bolger’s labor of love in promoting Health and PE, she worked during the COVID-19 quarantine with New York State AHPERD to create an advocacy video (click on image above to view the video) for Health and Physical Education (HPE). “We felt it was very important, now more than ever, to advocate for HPE and share all the essential elements and benefits. Many programs are being cut around the state. I am very blessed to work in a district
that values HPE!” Coach Beth Bolger was honored to be recognized for this award and expressed her gratitude to Lincoln Avenue Principal Christine Carlson, Sayville Superintendent Dr. John Stimmel, and Sayville Board of Education Trustee Dr. James Bertsch, Jr. “for writing the recommendations for the award. This year, more than ever, we have found unique and innovative ways of bringing communities together. Through outreach and technology, libraries have continued to be a vital resource of education and enrichment. As Connetquot Public Library and other Suffolk County libraries celebrate their fourth year of participation in The Great Give Back, things will look a bit different. “The Great Give Back, a community service initiative created by the Suffolk County Public Library Directors Association and the Suffolk County Library System, began back in 2017. The mission is to provide a day of opportunities for the patrons of public libraries to participate in meaningful, serviceoriented experiences.” Connetquot Public Library’s past initiatives have included Halloween Costume and
Coat Drives, Birthday Wishes, Knitting projects, a Chili-Cook Off, Cards for Soldiers, and more. What greater gift can we give during this time of uncertainty, but our heartfelt thanks? We invite you to show your appreciation by participating in this year’s Great Give Back: Thank You Letters. We want to express our gratitude to the frontline workers who have kept us safe and our communities functioning the last several months. Beginning Saturday September 19 through Saturday October 17, Adults, Teens, and Children may go to their respective departments to pick up a letter-writing packet which will include notepaper, envelope and stickers to write a card or letter of thanks to a frontline worker. The packet will include instructions and material to complete your cards. When you leave your
cards with us, we will forward them to organizations in the Connetquot community, such as hospitals, first responders, grocers, nursing homes, transportation, and many more who uplift and sustain our community. Each card or letter you write gives you the chance to win a gift card. No registration required. Again, we invite all of our members to participate in this wonderful initiative to thank our community heroes for their dedication and public service. Know that your kind words will make a difference to those frontline workers who commit themselves each and every day to making our world better, especially during these challenging times. COMMEMORATING SEPTEMBER 11 - To commemorate September 11, students and staff at Islip Academic Center in Oakdale, listened to survivor Genelle Guzman, from their classrooms via Zoom, retell her story. Genelle lasted for 27 hours under the wreckage of the North Tower of the World Trade Center until she was rescued. She was the last survivor to be pulled from the rubble at Ground Zero. Genelle also spoke about how she found strength through her faith, and answered questions after the presentation. Islip Academic Center is an ESBOCES high school for students with special needs.

Be Wary Of Foods That Contain Added Sugars Sugar is a naturally occurring component in many healthy foods, including fruit, but people looking to eat healthy should be wary of foods that contain added sugars, which can pose a significant threat to long-term health. The Great Pal-O-Mine Coin Challenge Allows You to be a Real Change Agent
Pal-O-Mine Equestrian, Inc. (www.pal-o-mine.org, Islandia, NY), a private, not for profit organization providing a comprehensive therapeutic equine program using horses to facilitate growth, learning and healing for children and adults with disabilities, is giving Long Islanders the opportunity to address the nation’s coin shortage, while at the same time, helping raise funds for its vital programs. You can do so by participating in the Great Pal-O-Mine Coin Challenge. Here’s how it works. School students, employees, volunteers, staff and the general public can pick up designated coin jars at Pal-O-Mine and then collect change in all denominations. The jars can be returned to Pal-O-Mine in conjunction with one of its themed “collection days” whereby the jars dropped off, weighed and a contest held for the heaviest jar. There will be three opportunities to win special Pal-O-Mine prizes: one on Halloween Day, another during Thanksgiving week and the
last one on New Year’s Day. Not only will the coins collected be of great assistance to Pal-O-Mine, but the first $10,000 raised will also be matched by Empire National Bank. All the coins collected by PalO-Mine will be returned back into the coin channel to help meet the coin shortage. PUZZLE ANSWERS: OBSERVING SEPTEMBER 11 AT ESBOCES - At Islip Career Center in Oakdale, a collaborative project involving the Welding, Horticulture, and Automotive programs produced beautiful additions to the school’s existing September 11 memorial garden. Welding and Automotive students created a replica of the Twin Towers and a sign that reads, “Never Forget,” while Horticulture students designed a patriotic red, white, and blue wreath. Moving forward, the Computer Graphic Arts class will design and create custom vinyl decals to be added to the designs. Islip Career Center is an Eastern Suffolk BOCES (ESBOCES) school that provides special career education services to students with special needs. The skills students learn may assist them in obtaining employment in certain industries.

“Essential Drive for Seniors” As part of United Way of Long Island’s response to the community needs that emerged from COVID-19, the organization hosted an Essentials Drive for Seniors, chaired by Pat Guidice, Business Manager of IBEW Local 1049. The drive launched on Friday, September 11 in recognition of the National Day of Service, in which
Americans are called to volunteer in their local communities. The Essentials Drive for Seniors provides an opportunity for Long Islanders to come together and give back to senior citizens, many of whom are still vulnerable to the coronavirus. While social distancing protects the health of older adults, it
also severs ties to critical resources, including access to basic but critical household, sanitization, toiletry and PPE items. Labor union members of IBEW Local 1049, who actively support the Long Island community, donated everyday essential items that seniors need but may not otherwise have in their homes such as toothpaste,

Restore Rusty Tools Many people may be tempted to discard rusty tools that have gone unused and sat in a garage or shed for a significant period of time, but tools encrusted with rust do not need to be relegated to the trash bin, nor do gardeners have to toil for hours scraping and sanding off the rust. There’s a much easier way to restore rusty tools that relies on a common household ingredient: vinegar. Pour vinegar into a deep vessel to submerge the metal part of the tool. Soak the tool overnight. The next day, use a scouring pad to rub off the rust. If the tool is too big to fit into a can or bucket, simply wrap it with a vinegar-soaked rag and cover the whole tool with a tightly secured plastic bag. Follow the same procedure the next day. After all the rust is gone, rinse the tool in cool water and dry thoroughly.
