By: Jamie Lynn Ryan I’ve been reflecting on my high school days quite a bit lately. Maybe it’s the back to school fever in the air, the specter of autumn and homecoming celebrations on the horizon… or perhaps the fact that I have seen more fellow graduates and former teachers in the last several weeks than I have, well, probably over the last five years. Not that reminiscing is anything new for me, per se, but I suppose the more you reconnect, the more vibrant the faded memories become. What were once old snapshots and slightly dogeared pages of a yearbook are brought to life once again, conjuring happy thoughts of days gone by.

Sure, life has gone on since then and taken us with it in various directions; but there is still something about those good old high school days that brings a smile to the face, mine anyway. They say some of the best friendships are forged during those formative years and that, if you hold on to even a handful of them, you should consider yourself extremely lucky. I tend to agree. As much as we have all moved on – with some pursuing college degrees and careers, others settling down to start a family, and still others on a path all their own – there is a part of me that believes, deep down, we are all simply trying to reclaim that lost innocence of youth, of days when life seemed simpler

and possibilities stretched infinitely before us. Call me crazy, but who among us wouldn’t love to have just a bit of that back? Here’s to nostalgia… here’s to the good old days… here’s to taking a look in the mirror at who we’ve become, and realizing that, for better or worse, we all still resemble that 16 yearold sitting on the bleachers at Homecoming… or passing notes in the back of a classroom… or anxiously studying for exams wondering what the future years would bring. So here we are. No shame in looking back now and then to realize how we arrived at precisely this point, and celebrating the many wonderful memories made along the way.

Lynn Russo, a transition specialist at the Islip Career Center (ICC) in ESBOCES, said, “We registered to take this course because we recognized our need to identify and support our students who may be experiencing a mental health challenge.” ICC serves students with disabilities in career education programs. They develop technical and academic skills, social skills, and problemsolving skills; all the tools to be successful as they transition into competitive

employment. Russo said, “We know that mental health and academic performance are linked, so we need to have the competencies to detect and support our students struggling with mental health issues.” Attendees engaged in role-playing and simulations to demonstrate how to assess a mental health crisis, select interventions and provide initial help, and connect young people to professional, peer, social, and self-help care.

Kicking Off Collections

Islip Town Supervisor Angie Carpenter was recently joined by Town officials and members of the Islip Food for Hope organization at a brunch that celebrates the start of the Thanksgiving collection season. Islip Food for Hope is dedicated to eliminating hunger in the Town of Islip throughout the year, including their community picnic in springtime that recently fed 750 guests. The Town joins Islip Food for Hope in making a concerted effort to give needy families the comfort of a holiday dinner during

the Thanksgiving season. “This is a tremendous organization led by selfless, generous members of the community who are making a difference in the lives of thousands of residents,” said Supervisor Carpenter. “We have a responsibility to look after those less fortunate, and aid them when possible.” On October 15th, Islip Food for Hope will hold its annual Thanksgiving Breakfast to help raise funds for their Thanksgiving efforts. The breakfast will take place from 8:00 a.m. to 9:00 a.m. at Timber Point County

Club in Great River. Tickets are $50 each, with all proceeds being used to feed the hungry in Islip Town. Islip Town Supervisor Angie Carpenter will deliver the keynote address at the event. In late August, several Eastern Suffolk BOCES (ESBOCES) staff members attended a Youth Mental Health First Aid (YMHFA) certification course to learn how to identify the warning signs and risk factors for mental health challenges among adolescents. YMHFA is a nationally recognized, evidence-based course that offers a fivestep action plan to support adolescents showing signs and symptoms of a mental health concern or an emotional crisis.

the pain of having an adolescent with addiction, this event was established to respond to the escalating needs of the community. LICADD’s programs are needed more than ever, and the tournament’s proceeds are specifically earmarked in support of the agency’s evidence-based programs for teens. In addition to providing teen-focused intervention, treatment and recovery programs, LICADD’s services aim at preventing Long Island’s youth from becoming addicting in the first place. Programs like Too Good for Drugs seek to bolster children and young adults’ selfesteem, confidence and communication with peers and parents, before they are presented with the choice to use alcohol and drugs. Under the Student Assistance Program (SAP), these resources are available in schools throughout Long Island and continue to expand into new school districts each month. The loss of innocence is a common, reoccurring theme in high-school level English literature. In Lord of the Flies by William Golding, for instance, loss of innocence is seen when Jack attempts to hunt and kill his first pig. In The Kite Runner, Hassan loses his innocence when he is raped by Assef in an alley. In the wellknown novel written by Mary Shelley, Frankenstein, the creature loses his innocence the day he was created, due to Victor abandoning him in his basement. Loss of innocence is even prevalent in movies, such as in Alice in Wonderland, when Alice cluelessly drinks from the “drink me” glass. Some can even argue that she lost her innocence before that, when

she actually tumbled down the rabbit hole. But is the theme of loss of innocence ubiquitous in only literature or cinemas? Not at all. Loss of innocence is a real live thing that people experience daily. And with technology at our fingertips, we are exposed to this recurring theme at increasingly younger ages. Television is vulgar and crude. Commercials are even shockingly inappropriate. Reality TV is showcasing and glamorizing the downfall of society. Children are being exposed to this before they even leave elementary school. Dropping the f-bomb doesn’t have the same shock value it did years ago. The idea of sex and sexual innuendos are thrown around. Children

see this, young adults see this - and it makes everything look like no big deal. No one is scared of anything anymore. No one is innocent anymore. Everyone likes to say that they are, but no one truly is. Everyone has tried things they weren’t supposed to. Everyone has incorporated profane words into their daily vocabulary. We are exposed to this on television, so it’s grown to be acceptable. To sum it up, loss of innocence is a common theme in English literature and Hollywood films. But now, with the help of constant, oneclick technology, we can all lose our innocence as young children. And we can all do it together.

These services are only a brief snapshot of the wide range of resources that LICADD provides: the agency conducts screenings, brief interventions, referrals to treatment (SBIRT) and relapse prevention services to individuals and families impacted by substance abuse. Islip Town Supervisor Angie Carpenter and the members of the Islip Town Board held the Annual Hispanic Heritage Month Ceremony on September 22nd at Islip Town Hall. The ceremony was organized by the town’s Department of Parks, Recreation and Cultural Affairs and included a rendition of the National Anthem being sung by

Five outstanding individuals were nominated and recognized for their exceptional efforts to better the town and community. The winning works will be exhibited from October 28th to November 8th at the South Ocean Middle School, 225 South Ocean Avenue in Patchogue. Long Island’s finest musicians and poets, along with thousands of music and beer lovers, converged on Camp Pa-Qua-Tuck on Saturday, September 5th and Sunday, September 6th to revel in the excitement of Bradstock XXII. Now in its 22nd year, this two-day festival featured hours of live poetry and Americana, bluegrass, blues, reggae, jam funk rock and jazz music performances. A portion of the sales proceeds benefitted the camp. Performers included Cassandra House, Gerry McKeveney, Jerry McDonald, David Amram, Soundswell, Jack’s Waterfall, Miles to Dayton, Ed Travers, Shecky and the Twangtones, Funkin’ A, Jelly Band and the Falco Brothers. A special addition to this year’s event was the Flower Power stage, where up-and-coming artists provided additional musical stylings. Linda Ringhouse, owner of The Grey Horse Tavern in Bayport, an original Bradstock organizer who rejoined the staff this year, spearheaded this portion of the festival. On Sunday, guests were also invited to take in the rhymes and slams of the area’s finest and most diverse poets, who performed on the Poetry Stage. All ticketholders were also given the added opportunity to participate in the 5K Trail Fun Run through the wooded grounds of Camp Pa-QuaTuck. All participants were recognized at the Awards Ceremony and received a Bradstock XXII mug. The music festival

has a special connection to the camp as the late Kevin “K.C.” Cowan - who performed at every single Bradstock event with his band, K.C. and The Love Drops, before his passing on October 2011 - was the brother-in-law of Bridget Costello, Director, Camp Pa-Qua-Tuck. “Since its inception Bradstock has raised over $50,000 for Camp Pa-QuaTuck,” Bridget Costello, Camp Director, Camp Pa-Qua-Tuck, said. “The Bradstock organization has continuously updated the venue from electric equipment to paint to campground figures, including a beautiful, 800-pound wooden Phoenix statue that was repurposed from a tree that was lost in Hurricane Sandy. The statue has become an emblem for Camp Pa-Qua-Tuck and our campers, rising out the ashes to become a great inspiration to us all.” Camp Pa-Qua-Tuck is a resident summer camp serving children and young adults ages 6-21 with both physical and developmental special needs. Its mission is to help these children to achieve equality, dignity, and maximum independence through a safe and quality program of camping, recreation, and education. Throughout the program, campers participate in many activities, such as arts and crafts, talent shows, cookouts, swimming and boating. Of these scholars, seven students also earned the highest recognition of National AP Scholar, for receiving an average score of at least four on all AP exams taken and scores of four or higher on eight or

The high school’s AP Program – which has grown in popularity and in course offerings over the past several years – includes a variety of programs that engage students in intense discussions, problemsolving concepts and collaborative activities. In addition, AP college-level courses and exams give students the opportunity to earn college credit and priority placement so

that they stand out in the admissions process. In 2007, 106 BBP students were enrolled in the high school’s AP courses. During the 2014-2015 school year, that number rose to 258 students. During the same time frame, the number of students scoring 3 or better on the associated exam also grew from 143 to 381.

Pausing to Commemorate Woodhull Elementary School students and staff commemorated the 14th anniversary of September 11th through a series of remembrance activities. Shortly before school began, grade 5-6 teacher Gabrielle Donovan lead a brief historical account of the significance of the day and a reverent student performance of the National Anthem. Later in

the morning, all students gathered again to listen as Superintendent of Schools Loretta Ferraro read Maira Kalman’s book Fireboat. The picture book, which is created for children, told the events of September 11th through the true story of a re-commissioned 1931 NYC fireboat, the John J. Harvey, that was called upon to help fight the fires at Ground Zero.

Students also had the chance to view artwork made by New York City schoolchildren to help first responders with their physical and emotional recovery following the event. Before concluding the program, Ms. Ferraro implored the students, as the future’s leaders, to think about how they can help to build a more peaceful world.

PATRIOT DAY HONORS - More than 250 Kindergarten through 5th grade students from Connetquot Central School District’s John Pearl Elementary School celebrated Patriot Day in remembrance of the victims of the terrorist attack on September 11th, 2001. As part of National Day of Service and Remembrance, students were dressed in red, white and blue, recited the Pledge of Allegiance and sand the school song, “Together, We Can Reach Our Goals.”

DAY FOR KIDS - On Saturday, September 19th, the Bellport Boys and Girls Club held its annual “Day for Kids” and Farmers Market. All produce sold at the event is locally grown on farms within 30 miles of Bellport. The market will be open every Saturday morning at the Bellport Boys and Girls from 11 a.m. to 4 p.m. until the end of October.

Bayport-Blue Point High School has announced the names of the ninth class of inductee for the Phantoms’ Athletic Hall of Fame. The official 2015 induction ceremony will once again precede the high school’s homecoming activities, as it is scheduled to begin at 10 a.m. on Saturday, October 10th. “I am proud to announce this year Athletic Hall of Fame Class of 2015, which

is comprised of exceptional students athletes, a stellar coach and a community member who has made a significant impact on our program, district and athletes,” said Timothy Mullins, district director of physical education, health and interscholastic sports. The Hall of Fame was initiated several years ago to recognize those individuals who have made outstanding contributions

Deadline Approaching Three weeks remain for National Flood Insurance Program (NFIP) insurance policyholders to submit their Hurricane Sandy Claims for review by the Federal Emergency Management Agency. The last day to submit claims is Thursday, October 15th. The U.S. Department of Housing and Urban Development recently announced that any additional flood insurance proceeds up to $20,000 will not be treated as duplicative, and will not be recouped by HUD or its grantees. To date, approximately three out of four NFIP claimants have

received less than $20,000 in additional compensation from FEMA, and will not face any possible repayment of HUD-funded grants. Policyholders can call the NFIP’s Hurricane Sandy claims center at 866.337.4262 from 8 a.m. to 8 p.m. Eastern Daylight Time (EDT), Monday through Friday, to request a review. It is important to have your policy number and insurance company name ready when you call. As of September 16th, more than 14,000 policyholders have requested reviews of their Sandy flood insurance claims.

Policyholders also can go online to www.fema. gov/hurricane-sandynfip-claims to download a form requesting a review. The downloaded form can be filled out and emailed to FEMAsandyclaimsreview@ fema.dhs.gov or faxed to 202-646-7970 to begin the review process. College Michael J. Grant, Brentwood campus on September 17th. The new building will be the first of its kind in the state’s community college system. Fifty percent of the $19.5 million center’s funding comes from New York State. The new facility will house laboratories and classrooms to teach

installation, maintenance and repair of solar, photovoltaic, wind, geothermal and other green power technologies, according to Suffolk County Community College President Dr. Shaun L. McKay who said plans call for the building to be solar-powered with geothermal heating.
