The Equity First Foundation is a 501c3 nonprofit organization, which services clients all over Long Island. Rhonda Klch started this foundation with the mission to offer services, resources and programs to consumers and small businesses that are facing financial distress.

The Most Interesting Person in the Room Who you were, who you are, and who you will be are three different people.” - Unknown In my early twenties I transitioned from self-avowed tomboy to ultra-feminine girly girl, seemingly overnight, thanks to nature taking its course and queuing in to the fact that my appearance brought me attention. My visage not only brought compliments, but also some much-needed pocket money, both during and after college, when I found work as a model. I can even recall on one occasion, literally stopping traffic. No, I’m not kidding. A gentleman stopped his car in the middle of a busy street in Brooklyn to attempt to flirt with me as I was crossing the bustling thoroughfare, bringing the traffic behind him to a midafternoon crawl. That was twentythree years ago. I was twenty-one years old. When I look back on those years that seem like a lifetime ago, the shell may have been spectacular, but inside, I’m afraid, things were not. Had you asked me who I was back then, I likely would have

struggled to answer. Had you asked if I could write, I would have shrugged my shoulders and given you an “I dunno” glance. Younger women in our culture are often conditioned to believe that our value lies in youth and beauty. It’s an unfortunate societal ill that keeps so many young women from developing a richness of character, a boldness of spirit, and from nurturing our most precious abilities. Shortly after turning thirty, I conducted one of my first interviews as an entertainment journalist, with The View co-host, Joy Behar. Here I was, thinking I was a mature adult, when Joy said to me, “You know, your thirties is a great time to be honest with yourself so that your forties can be wonderful.” I realized that, to her, I was but a child. I was perplexed by her statement then, but I understand it now. It was in my thirties that I began to write professionally, I began to delve into reading, and I read everything I could get my hands on. I started keeping a journal, and I set about the business of getting to know myself, because

I had been a virtual stranger to myself in my twenties. It was also in my thirties that I got married, had my son, lost my grandparents, got divorced, and had to pick myself up and dust myself off. Life happened, and it stripped away the varnish and revealed character, humor, creativity, compassion and depth. In my twenties I gleaned satisfaction from being considered the hottest person in the room. In my mid-thirties, I began to experience a feeling of insecurity at the realization that I will never be twenty-one again and will most likely never be the hottest one in the room. Now, when I enter a room, I am aware that my skin is not quite as flawless, my waist not quite as tiny, and I have a few wrinkles under my belt; not to mention my broken nose (Long story! It involves a six-year old, a Shih Tzu and a toy). But if you were to ask me how I feel now, my feeling is that I would much rather be the most interesting person in the room.

CONSTITUTION DAY - In recognition of Constitution Day, students in Kelly Randazzo’s second-grade class at Helen B. Duffield Elementary School recently borrowed from history to utilize their creative talents and devise their own version of the United States Constitution in the classroom. After spending time learning about the Constitution, students created their very own version, based on the book, The Seven Habits of Highly Effective People. Barbers, Beauty & Books South Country Central School District elementary students read their favorite books as local barbers trimmed their locks during the Barbers, Beauty and Books reading campaign held on September 15th. Held in conjunction with Suffolk County Executive Steve Bellone, Smart Start Suffolk and the South Country Public Library, the district encouraged students to visit KO Hair Designs, Lonnie’s Barbershop of Bellport, Imperial Kut Kreators and Razor’s Edge of East Patchogue, where each received a certificate of participation and a $5 gift

card to use at participating businesses. Fall lawn care tips Spring and summer may be the seasons most often associated with landscaping and lawn care, but tending to lawns and gardens is a year-round job. If lawn and garden responsibilities dip considerably in winter, then fall is the last signiﬁcant chance before the new year that homeowners will have to address the landscaping around their homes. Fall lawn care differs from spring and summer lawn care, even if the warm temperatures of summer linger into autumn. Homeowners who want their lawns to thrive year-round can take advantage of the welcoming weather of fall to address any existing or potential issues. • Keep mowing, but adjust how you mow. It’s important that homeowners continue to mow their lawns so long as grass is growing. But as fall transitions into winter, lower the blades so the grass is cut shorter while remaining mindful that no blade of grass should ever be trimmed by more than one-third. Lowering the blades will allow more sunlight to reach the grass in the months ahead. • Remove leaves as they fall. Much like apple-picking and foliage, raking leaves is synonymous with fall. Some homeowners may wait to pick up a rake until all of the trees on their properties are bare. However, allowing fallen leaves to sit on the ground for extended periods of time can have an adverse effect on grass. Leaves left to sit on the lawn may ultimately suffocate the grass by forming an impenetrable wall that deprives the lawn

of sunlight and oxygen. The result is dead grass and possibly even fungal disease. Leaves may not need to be raked every day, but homeowners should periodically rake and remove leaves from their grass, even if there are plenty left to fall still hanging on the trees. • Repair bald spots. Summer exacts a toll on lawns in various ways, and even homeowners with green thumbs may end up with a lawn ﬁlled with bald spots come September. Autumn is a great time to repair these bald spots. Lawn repair mixes like Scotts® PatchMaster contain mulch, seed and fertilizer to repair bald spots, which can begin to recover in as little as seven days. Before applying such products, remove dead grass and loosen the top few inches of soil. Follow any additional manufacturer instructions as well. • Aerate the turf. Aerating reduces soil compacting, facilitating the delivery of fertilizer and water to a lawn’s roots. While many homeowners, and particularly those who take pride in tending to their own lawns, can successfully aerate their own turf, it’s best to ﬁrst have soil tested so you know which amendments to add after the ground has been aerated. Gardening centers and home improvement stores sell soil testing kits that measure the pH of soil, but homeowners who want to test for nutrients or heavy metals in their soil may need to send their samples to a lab for further testing. In 1971, Paul Lauterbur, a chemistry professor at Stony Brook University was eating a hamburger at a Pennsylvania restaurant and had a “Eureka” moment about his nuclear magnetic resonance research and how it could potentially be used to image multidimensional objects. That moment of inspiration advanced his research that led to groundbreaking work toward the discovery of modern MRI imaging in medicine, and a shared Nobel Prize in 2003. Fastforward to 2018, Stony Brook University and the Long Island Section of the Institute of Electrical

and Electronics Engineers (IEEE) are recognizing the late Lauterbur’s achievement as an IEEE Historical Milestone. The ceremony, held at the soon-to-be opened Medical and Research Translation (MART) Building, included the unveiling of a bronze plaque, a presentation by Stony Brook and IEEE leadership, and discussions about new research involving MRI techniques, such as its use for personalized medicine and brain mapping. “Quite simply, the MRI is one of the most important medical discoveries of the 20th century,” said Samuel L. Patchogue Theatre & The Gateway will celebrate the life of Hollywood legend, Marilyn Monroe, with a week of Marilyn Monroe themed events running from October 8 through the 13th; and will co-present the nationally touring production of With Love, Marilyn on Friday, October 12th and Saturday, October 13th at 8 p.m. With Love, Marilyn stars Erin Sullivan as Marilyn Monroe in a special one-woman tribute performance to one of the world’s most iconic stars. With 28 years of theater experience under her belt, Erin Sullivan has performed across the country and worldwide playing some of Broadway’s best blondes. Her journey with Ms. Monroe began with originating the icon in a new play Marilee and Baby Lamb: The Assassination of an American Goddess written by Tony-award winning, Oscar-nominated playwright Mark Medoff. Continuing her passion for Monroe’s life and legacy is what has built the foundation for this piece. Audiences will fall in

love all over again with Marilyn, Monroe, watching Erin Sullivan’s tribute portrayal of the famed sex goddess. The show will include classic songs such as “I Wanna Be Loved By You,” “My Heart Belongs To Daddy,” and “Diamonds Are A Girl’s Best Friend,” accompanied by a threepiece band with new orchestrated arrangements by one of Broadway’s finest musical directors, Henry Aronson (Rock of Ages, Tommy).
