REMEMBRANCE CEREMONY - The Town of Islip recently held its annual September 11th Remembrance Ceremony, which took place at Veterans Memorial Park, outside of Town Hall. Members of the Islip Town Board read aloud the names of all Islip residents who lost their lives as a result of the terrorist attacks of September 11th. Say What? By: Jamie Lynn Ryan I am the queen of misunderstanding song lyrics. Which, for someone who has what I would call a fairly deep appreciation for words, is a bit odd. It just goes to show that the art of enunciation is going the way of cassette tapes and CDs – lost, down the drain, nonexistent. It’s funny, with the advent of apps like Pandora and Spotify, most lyrics are just a glance away. To say my interpretation of them

has been slightly off is putting it mildly. Pearl Jam? Forget it. Read the lyrics – pure poetry; listen to them – and you’re left a bit confused. Rap is another genre that I’ve always had a problem translating. While the delivery may be impressive, there are times when you question whether what you’re listening to is English or not. Listen to the censored version and, well, there goes most of the lyrics altogether. Country, while one of my least favorite choices

– please, no hate mail from the country lovers – seems to have it right when it comes to properly conveying the message at hand. If only the sound was a bit less… twangy. Ah, but that’s what makes the musical merrygo-round so fun, isn’t it? Styles for everyone, and a million different ways to access them. What did we do before all this technology? Oh right, we listened to the radio and misunderstood the lyrics. The good old days.

On Sunday morning, September 7th, the SYAG junior division ‘Oregon Ducks’ football team won the opening game of the season against the local rival ‘Cowboys.’ Coach Phil Maniaci and his staff were proud of this ‘team’ effort, and credit all the boys for the 36-13 win. This junior division team of 7 & 8 year-olds plays its

8-game schedule at either Sagamore Middle School (Holtsville) or Medford Field (Medford) under the lights! The local youngsters attend the Connetquot and Sachem schools. Friends and family members look forward to the balance of the season as their ‘Ducks’ look for another shot at the ‘Super Bowl’ championship game.

The Regional Competition of the 18th Annual Suffolk County Battle of the Books, took place at the Javitz Lecture Center, Stony Brook University on Saturday, August 9th and Monday August 11th. The Connetquot Clones

placed fourth in the evening battle session and won the Judges Award for Sportsmanship. This competition, which began in 1997, incorporates a love of reading, teamwork and camaraderie. The Connetquot Public Library offers teens many opportunities to expand their horizons through innovative programming and the opportunity to earn community service. College is unlike anything I’ve ever gone through. High school was four years of academic grinding, while college has proven to be pretty awesome. The workload isn’t too bad so far, which has allowed me to get involved on campus. I’m on the rugby team, I’ve joined a few clubs, and I’m writing for the school newspaper. College has not been all work and no play. The unfortunate moniker “Villanofun” has proven false, and I’m having the time of my life. I miss home, however. The new friends I’ve made here

are great and all, but nobody could replace my mom, dad and brother. They are the foundation to what will hopefully be my success. My mom and dad are the driving force in my life. I can’t wait until I see them during Parents’ Weekend, because somebody needs to do my laundry! Although I’m just kidding about the laundry, the idea that I miss the little things about home rings true. I miss my bed. I miss my car. I miss my old life. With that being said, I’m really liking the new life which I have formed here.

The kids on my ﬂoor are like family to me, and I’ve only been here a month. We are all in this together, and the communal sense of commitment has brought us closer together. I feel as though we know what each of us are going through, so bonds have become strengthened. The guys on my rugby team have been more than friendly as well. We are a team, and during games I can always expect them to have my back. I’m very excited to see what the rest of my four years of college have to offer.

So Far, So Good With another school year upon us, we look back at a summer of rejuvenation, recreation and reading. During the summer, the learning never stopped, as patrons of the Connetquot Public Library participated in the 2014 Children and Adult Summer Reading Programs. Over 1,500 patrons participated enjoying all the library has to offer. With summer, came another Suffolk County Battle of the Books, an inter-library competition between teams of teens focused on 8 young adult novels. Sayville Sophomore Sean Barry was only three when his uncle Timothy Kelly perished on 9/11. A municipal bond broker working in Tower One at Cantor Fitzgerald from Port Washington, and father of three, Kelly was only 37 on that unforgettably tragic day. Growing up with fond memories of his uncle, Sean

wanted to commemorate the 13thanniversary of 9/11 with his High School community. Sayville High School Principal Ron Hoffer was impressed when the young man approached him to ask if he could play the bagpipes during each lunch period to remind his fellow students that this moment in American history should not be

The Town of Islip Department of Parks, Recreation and Cultural Affairs Department will host the annual Apple Festival on Saturday, October 4th, from 10 a.m. to 4:30 p.m., at Islip Grange, located at 10 Broadway Avenue in Sayville. In case of inclement weather, a rain date has been set for Sunday, October 5th. Admission is free for all and many activities will be offered at a low-cost.

There will be fun for the whole family with more than 200 different vendors and exhibitors present, as well as a Kid Fun Zone. Families will also be able to go pumpkin picking, participate in arts and crafts and enjoy various apple treats. $1.00 carousel rides are available for children, as well. Live music is also planned with performances by Slang the Band, from 10 a.m. to 12 noon, and Southband

from 12:30 p.m to 4:30 p.m. Plus, there will be a special appearance by B103 Radio Station. Food will be available for purchase at the large festival food court.
