Led by Assistant Principal Reinaldo Latorre, 13 Bellport High School summer graduates processed through Ebersole Auditorium to the cheers of family during South Country Central School District’s annual summer graduation, held on Aug. 20. During this momentous occasion, Summer School Principal Erika DellaRosa welcomed families and the newest alumni, while Principal Timothy Hogan congratulated the students on their perseverance
during the COVID-19 pandemic and social distancing restrictions. He noted that with graduation comes increased personal responsibility, which in turn renders “ownership and accountability for our own actions.” He also encouraged the students to unleash their “untapped potential.” Following Mr. Hogan’s address, Superintendent of Schools Dr. Joseph Giani certified that the students had met New York State’s requirements for graduation. Dr. Giani,
Mr. Hogan and Board of Education President E. Anne Hayes then presented each of the graduates with his or her diploma as their photos flashed upon a large screen. Ms. Hayes also led the graduates in the ceremonial moving of the tassel, commemorating the students becoming Class of 2020 alumni of the South Country Central School District. The district extends its congratulations and wishes for continued success to the graduates.

Renovation projects that aim to conserve energy can save homeowners substantial amounts of money. Such projects don’t often require considerable effort or even sizable financial investments, which can make homeowners skeptical as to just how much they can save after completing the project. But the scale of a project may have little to do with how much homeowners will save. For example, the U.S. Department of Energy notes that a relatively effortless task like turning back a thermostat between 7° and 10° F for eight hours per day can save homeowners as much as $83 per year. A more labor-intensive task like planting shade trees saves homeowners an average of between $35 and $119 per year. When looking for ways to conserve energy around the house and save money, homeowners need not necessarily commit to expensive projects. The DOE notes that the following are some energy-saving projects and details what homeowners can expect to save after completing them. While each individual project may not result in jaw-dropping savings, homeowners who follow many of these recommendations may end up saving more than $1,000 per year.

With regard to home repairs, homeowners may be able to delay some projects until the weather permits or they find room in their budgets. But other areas, including the roof, may demand immediate action. Few homeowners give the roofs of their homes much thought until a problem arises. But learning to recognize potential indicators of roof trouble can help homeowners prevent potentially drastic situations down the road. • Light: Homeowners with attics in their homes can inspect the ceilings inside the attic for signs of holes or leaks. Light peering through the top of the house indicates a hole or leak, as does stains or streaks on the ceiling. • Worn shingles: Shingles should lie flat against the roof, so any
that appear to be buckling or turning up are damaged and in need of repair. A single damaged shingle does not require a full roof replacement, but inspect all the shingles nonetheless. Another indicator of shingle problems can be found when cleaning downspouts or gutters. If the gutters and downspouts contain lots of shingle granules, the roof may soon need to be replaced. • Moss: Moss on a rooftop may give a home character, but that added character is costly. Shady areas of a roof can be susceptible to the growth of moss and fungi because moisture can be trapped in such areas. If possible, remove moss or fungi from a roof with a stiff brush or hire a professional to do the job instead. Moss may come back even after brushing it off, so homeowners should
keep an eye on areas of their roofs that get little sunlight. In addition, trapped moisture can be very harmful to a roof, so it may be wise to exercise caution and have roofs with mold or fungi growths inspected. • Age: Another indicator of roof trouble may be the age of the roof. Even if there are no visible signs of damage, homeowners whose roofs have some years under their belt may want to consider replacing them. Asphalt shingle roofs typically have life expectancies of 20 to 25 years, while roofs installed over existing layers of shingles may need to be replaced after 20 years. Recognizing minor roof damage before it escalates into a larger problem can save homeowners substantial amounts of money.

“Sayville Strong” Despite Soggy First Day Story by Linda Mittiga This “unprecedented” year of 2020 has been doing its best to make history. For the first time in recent memory, Sayville School’s First Day of School not only experienced “some rain,” but a super soaker. However, the deluge couldn’t dampen everyone’s feelings of excitement about returning after a sixmonth absence. Sayville Administrators, faculty and staff wearing their Sayville Strides T-shirts with the uplifting message “You Got This/We Got You” were delighted to meet their new students and welcome back familiar faces behind colorful masks. In turn, many of the Sayville students who
returned to in-school learning environments expressed they were happy to be back. While some families had wanted their children to be remote learners, these students have also been encouraged to remain connected with their school community after their At-Home learning sessions end by participating in virtual school events, after-school clubs and activities (which at the elementary level are all virtual this year) and stay alert for all school and district mailings As with every School District in New York State, Sayville is adhering closely to all COVID-19 restrictions that affect the learning environments. Sayville
has posted on its website both a comprehensive Reopening Plan, which outlines all procedures that are in place for the fall, and FAQs to help the entire Sayville School Community understand these changes—including wearing face masks, new social-distancing spaces, hygiene procedures, air circulation upgrades, technology enhancements, and rigorous cleaning regimens. Prior to opening day, Sayville School District had hosted Zoom meetings for the staff and community to ensure everyone was informed about the back-to-school plan.

A convoy of vintage military armored cars delivered cases of Mallomars, the historic 107- year old dark chocolate-coated marshmallow and graham cookie to Stop & Shop. Because of the enormous demand by Mallomar devotees who are forced to wait an entire year for the seasonal treat to arrive, Stop & Shop arranged for safe and secure transport. The
cookies were offloaded from historic World War Two armored military vehicles by WW II Army reenactors. Mallomars were first produced in 1913, in Hoboken, N.J., and the greater Long Island - New York City metropolitan area still accounts for more than 70 percent of all international Mallomar consumption. A century ago, the
cookies were baked and shipped only during cooler months because they might melt. While temperaturecontrolled transport is now the norm, Mallomar continues the tradition, selling between September to April, which only sustains the sense of urgency that when the treat is ready its best to ensure they arrive safely with a “military” escort.

The West Islip Breast Cancer Coalition for Long Island, Inc. (WIBCC) is a non-profit grassroots organization that was founded in 1992. They work to eradicate Breast Cancer and gynecological cancers. Their mission is to provide support services to women undergoing treatment and requiring postmastectomy care with their “Lead A Helping Hand” program, and to actively promote cancer and environmental awareness with education, advocacy and outreach throughout the community. To accomplish their mission, they focus on prevention, research, education, services, their Lend a Helping Hand program and awareness.

MoCA L.I.ghts will transform the Village of Patchogue into an inviting open-air museum and arts destination for the public to enjoy safely on foot, by car, and online for free from October to December 2020. Facades of contemporary and historic architecture, the PTPA Marquee, and PAC’s pop-up inflatable gallery screen will all be illuminated with innovative projected artworks, animation, and site-specific media works created by local, national and international artists. Surrounding businesses in the downtown area will become a vibrant backdrop
to this uniquely immersive arts experience, rejuvenating and lighting up spirits of all ages in ways Long Island has never seen. M o C A L.I.ghts programming will include a number of outdoor art experiences including Art on the Marquee, ARTchitecture, and the Night Vision Gallery. Innovative projected artworks utilizing specialized projection mapping techniques, animation, and site-specific media works created by local, national, and international artists will be exhibited for free to the public on foot, by car,
and online from October to December 2020. The vibrant businesses of our downtown will become a backdrop to the first immersive art experience of its’ kind to take place on Long Island. For MoCA L.I.ghts 2020 the Patchogue Arts Council is proud to partner with; Village of Patchogue, Greater Patchogue Chamber of Commerce, Patchogue BID, Pat-Med Library, Patchogue Theatre for the Performing Arts, Eastern Suffolk BOCES Art in Education, and Cornell Cooperative Suffolk County & Marine Department..
WIBCC has remained open throughout the pandemic and are truly here to serve our community. This coalition serves all of Long Island, not just West Islip. As like many other non-profit organizations, WIBCC holds various fundraising events throughout the year to gain awareness and collect funds in support of their mission. This September they are part of Stop & Shop’s Community Bag Program. WIBCC will receive a $1 donation every time a $2.50 reusable Community Bag is purchased at 400 Union Blvd in West Islip, unless otherwise directed by the customer through the Giving Tag attached to the bag. Additionally, they are participating in John’s Crazy Socks Giving Back Program, which started September 1st and will run through October 31st. John’s Crazy Socks is a fatherson social enterprise that was inspired by John Lee Cronin, a young man with Down Syndrome and his love of colorful and fun socks, or what he calls his “crazy socks”. John’s Crazy Socks has agreed to donate 10% of their net sales to WIBCC for every pair of socks purchased from their website, www. johnscrazysocks.com, when you enter the
charity code FG-WIBCC20.
Next month they will present Pink Flags of October, a month-long event to honor and remember those affected by Breast Cancer. Hundreds of pink flags will be placed at the entrance of Good Samaritan Hospital. You have the opportunity to purchase a ribbon in honor of or in memory of someone whose life has been affected by Breast Cancer. These ribbons will be tied to the flags and together the flags and ribbons will fly for the entire month of October. On Sunday, September 27 from 12-2PM at The Cancer Institute (111 Beach Drive in West Islip), there will be a ceremony to celebrate this month-long event, which will include health information, light refreshments and more. If you purchase a ribbon, you can attend the event and place the name of whom it is in honor of or in memory of right on the ribbon itself. If you cannot attend, it will be placed for you. If you would simply like to make a donation directly to this coalition, you can securely do so online at www.wibcc.org.
