Department and South Country Ambulance Corp., as well as New York-area firefighters and their family members, local residents, and politicians. In attendance on behalf of H2M was Director of Architecture Joe Mottola, architect Patrick Stone, and Director of Marketing Lori Anne De Iulio Casdia. In addition to attending as the project’s architects, it is important to note that Mr. Mottola and Mr. Stone also serve as volunteer firefighters for the Massapequa Fire Department and have a strong connection to the memorial. “There hasn’t been a day that’s gone by where I, or people like me who lived through that day, don’t think about the events of 9/11,” Mr. Mottola said. “I expressed to Commissioner Fargione how much working on this project means to me as both an architect and fireman. I am grateful to have been involved in such a beautiful tribute to those who lost their lives on that day.” “Being a firefighter and designing a monument such as this has tremendous meaning for me. I am forced to take some of my emotions and turn them into something that will hopefully help people cope with the events, memories
and hardships caused by the tragedy,” Mr. Stone said. “My hope is that the monument will benefit its visitors, and ultimately ensure that people never forget the events of that day.” The project broke ground in May 2015, and consists of a decorative masonry monument with an integral water feature that holds the World Trade Center artifact. The water feature introduces a “living” portion of the monument, eliminating the silence to create a soothing background noise. The water flows from behind the Artifact and splashes below it, creating a reflecting pool. The monument is surrounded by a decorative paver layout in the shape of a Maltese Cross, and includes the department’s patch made out of pavers and a 30-foot flagpole centered in the cross. The site is accented by LED lighting throughout, and will be landscaped and include benches once complete. The memorial is dedicated to lieutenant of FDNY Engine Company 1, Andrew Desperito, who was a member of the Hagerman Fire Department, along with all those who lost their lives on September 11th, 2001.

Islip Town Supervisor Angie Carpenter was onhand to welcome the participants of the 2015 Job Search Boot Camp, hosted by the Town of Islip. The Job Search Boot Camp is a series of weekly seminars that puts job-seekers through an intensive training program that helps them
learn the keys to finding employment. Each session is led by Maria Frey, President and Founder of Executive Consultants of New York – one of the premier local hiring firms. Roughly 35 Islip residents were in attendance at the first meeting. “This is an outstanding program that is going to

In conjunction with the Hagerman Fire District, H2M architects + engineers was honored to be present at the unveiling of the Hagerman Fire Department 9/11 memorial. The memorial, which is located on the fire department’s grounds along Andrew Desperito Way in East Patchogue, was unveiled at a dedication ceremony and service on Friday, September 11th. It includes a 14-foot, seven ton section of steel that was salvaged from the World Trade Center and secured from the New York City Port Authority in 2011. “The memorial was a vision and a dream that has now become a reality of epic proportions,” said Hagerman Fire Department Commissioner Carl Fargione. “It is a tribute to all those who were lost on that day, and a place for future generations to come reflect and memorialize those who were lost.” “The 9/11 memorial developed by H2M is magnificent,” said South Country Ambulance Company Chief Greg Miglino. “It captures the essence of what a memorial for that day should be, and it was a privilege to be at the unveiling.” On hand for the event were members of the Hagerman Fire

Ushering in the Equinox By: Jamie Lynn Ryan Ok, now it’s official. Autumn can commence. Why? Because today is the actual autumnal equinox, the moment all those fall fanatics have been eagerly anticipating since, well, probably since last autumn. I know September 1st is the unofficial introduction of all things pumpkin spice, but, believe it or not, there are a few more factors to consider when introducing a new season. For instance, cooler weather, the start of football and “Sunday Fundays,” playoff baseball, fall TV premieres… all things that were absent as of September 1st. And, while Halloween merchandise
has been on the shelves since July, guess what? It’s still over a month away. And Christmas – don’t even get me started on that. Three months to go. Three MONTHS. Plenty of time. No need to make those lists and check them twice quite yet. And yet… as I write this, the temperature sits at a positively summery 81º - perfect for pumpkin picking, hayrides and corn mazes… if all those things took place on a beach. But no worries, the season is still young – plenty of time for the autumn chill to settle in and the boots and scarves to be dragged out of the closet for that first brisk afternoon walk through the fallen foliage.
‘Tis the season of fall festivals and Oktoberfest celebrations, of raking and home improvement projects, of toasty evenings spent curled up with a (pumpkin) spiced latte and a book. Sure, it has its benefits. If you like that sort of thing. Me, I’ll be the one walking along the shoreline at the beach, camera (or iPhone) in hand, trying to capture the perfect autumnal sunset shot. I’ll get into the spirit eventually. Maybe once October hits. I might even check out the Halloween merchandise. And start making my Christmas list… Nah, who am I kidding. That’s what Black Friday is for.
On September 2nd, music instructor Jack Licitra and assistant teacher Anne Crean brought their music enrichment program to Camp Pa-Qua-Tuck for one final round of singing and dancing. Supported by funds raised during off-season events, such as Bradstock, the duo was initially invited to the camp by Camp Director Bridget Costello, who had seen Mr. Licitra perform at other events. The program focused not only on the music, but on the means by which the campers could perform. Throughout the summer, the instructors and camp counselors worked with the campers to create and practice on instruments made from re-purposed materials,

UNCF will carry on the National Achievement Scholarship Program’s name and legacy through the newly-designed UNCF Achievement Capstone Program, launching in the spring of 2016. UNCF Achievement Capstone Scholars will be nominated by their college or university presidents, chancellors, and deans based on outstanding academic performance, character, and demonstrated leadership honoring the legacy of the 1964 Civil Rights Act. Awardees may use the scholarship to pay off outstanding undergraduate educational costs at their current institutions, or to finance additional degrees, professional certifications, and continuing education programs. “UNCF is honored to
carry on the name and legacy of a prestigious program which began at a time in our nation where earning a college degree was a social and financial challenge for many African Americans,” said Dr. Michael L. Lomax, UNCF President and CEO. “We are humbled to take on the mantle of the UNCF Achievement Capstone Program, which not only allows UNCF to help students make it to and through college, but now also helps them after they have earned a college degree.” The National Achievement Scholarship Program is a privatelyfinanced academic competition established in 1964 specifically to provide recognition and college scholarships for Black American high school students. The program has been conducted by NMSC, a privately-financed, not-
for-profit organization that operates without government assistance, and also conducts the National Merit® Scholarship Program. The two programs have been conducted simultaneously, but administered and funded separately. NMSC is proud to partner with UNCF, the nation’s largest and most effective minority education organization, to establish the UNCF Achievement Capstone Program. For more than 70 years, UNCF has worked to get students to and through college, and awards more than $100 million in scholarships annually. This program will further expand UNCF’s reach to AfricanAmerican students across the country who will benefit from the honor, recognition, and financial assistance accompanying these awards.
In the half century since the National Achievement Scholarship Program was created, more than four million Black Americans have entered the program, and approximately 228,000 have received program recognition. Of those honored, more than 34,000 of the most outstanding participants were chosen to receive Achievement Scholarship® awards worth about $108 million. Currently, about 3,200 of these young men and women are undergraduates at 300 colleges and universities across the nation. Since the National Achievement Scholarship Program’s funds will be redirected to provide awards for college graduates, Black American high school students will no longer have the opportunity to enter the National Achievement Scholarship
Program. However, they can still compete for awards when they enter the National Merit Scholarship Program, and they may be eligible to receive awards from UNCF under this new program once they graduate from college. “The history and accomplishments of the National Achievement Scholarship Program are great, and NMSC is proud of the program’s 51 successful years,” said Mr. Timothy E. McGuire, NMSC President and CEO. “Through its partnership with UNCF, NMSC looks forward to the new direction of the National Achievement Scholarship Program and its funding of awards for high-achieving, underrepresented college graduates in the newly-created UNCF Achievement Capstone Program.”

The Federal Emergency Management Agency has extended the deadline for flood insurance policyholders to submit their Hurricane Sandy Claims for review. The last day to submit claims is now October 15th, 2015. The U.S. Department of Housing and Urban Development announced today that any additional flood insurance proceeds up to $20,000 will not be treated as duplicative. Federal agencies cannot provide disaster assistance for losses covered by insurance. HUD’s announcement stated that “this will eliminate the need for HUD grantees to reclaim assistance from these households or to repay those funds through nonfederal sources. To date, three out of four National Flood Insurance Program (NFIP) claimants have received less than $20,000 in additional compensation from FEMA and will not face any possible repayment.” Roy Wright, FEMA’s Deputy Associate Administrator for Insurance and Mitigation, encouraged policyholders to call FEMA and request a review if they believe their claims were underpaid for any reason. As of September 14th, nearly 14,000 policyholders have requested reviews of their Sandy flood insurance claims. “FEMA remains committed to making sure that every policyholder gets every dollar they are owed under their flood insurance policy. Already, thousands of policyholders have contacted us to have their claims reviewed and we have begun providing funds to those who were due additional payments on their claim,” Wright said.
“We are hopeful that HUD’s action to provide relief to the vast majority of those who are concerned about potential duplicative benefits will encourage even more policyholders who may have been initially reluctant to enter the process to do so,” Wright said. “In light of HUD’s decision to simplify this review and provide relief, we are extending the claims review deadline until October 15th. We hope by extending the deadline we are addressing any remaining concerns some may have about entering the claims review process. The review process we have established is designed to be simple, fair, and accessible without paid legal assistance. FEMA is dead set on restoring trust in this important program and no one should be discouraged from having their claim reviewed.” Policyholders can call the NFIP’s Hurricane Sandy claims center at 866.337.4262 from 8 a.m. to 8 p.m. Eastern Daylight Time (EDT), Monday through Friday to request a review. It is important to have your policy number and insurance company name when you call. Policyholders also can go online to www.fema. gov/hurricane-sandynfip-claims to download a form requesting a review. The downloaded form can be filled out and e-mailed to FEMAsandyclaimsreview@ fema.dhs.gov or faxed to 202.646.7970 to begin the review process. We’ve made some enhancements, while retaining the original aesthetics,” he said, noting that he worked with the Giaquinto family, of Deer Park, to develop a site survey and the Bay Shore-based engineering firm, Graham Associates, to create computer-aided-
designs for the project. The mansion was designed by New York City architects Delano and Aldrich, who were among the most successful of the generation of architects who took European and classical precedent and forged a personal interpretation of house architecture during the first half of the 20th century. Their clients included the Vanderbilts and Whitneys. Charles Wellford Leavitt, a landscape architect, who also designed elaborate gardens at estates belonging to Walter Chrysler, William Whitney, Henri Bendel and others, designed Brookwood Hall’s grounds. Brookwood Hall was once the home of the wealthy Knapp family, later of New York City stockbroker Francis B. Thorne and later, for 23 years, part of the Brooklyn Orphan Asylum. The building currently houses some Town of Islip offices and the Islip Art Museum.

Islip Town officials recently announced the start of a landscape restoration project at Brookwood Hall in East Islip, a decaying and long neglected historic mansion. Islip Town Supervisor Angie Carpenter and Town Councilman Steve Flotteron marked the beginning of efforts to restore the historic mansion’s gardens at a press conference held at the 1903 Georgian-revival mansion on Irish Lane. A year ago, community leaders, history buffs and architecture aficionados announced plans to begin a restoration effort to get the building, once home to millionaires and later orphans, back to its former glory. Honoring the Fallen Suffolk County Executive Steve Bellone announced today that more than 3,500 runners from twenty five states and four countries participated in the Inaugural Suffolk County Marathon & Half Marathon to Support Our Veterans. All net proceeds generated from the event will go directly to veteran service organizations in Suffolk County. The male and female winner of the full Marathon were: Chau Zhou, NYC2:46:50, Caroline Levesque, Rhode Island-3:12:02. The wheelchair division winner: Peter Hawkins, Malverne-2:13 The male and female winner of the half marathon were: Anthony Famiglietti, North Carolina-1:07:35, Pamela O’Sullivan, Babylon-1:24:02.
The male and female winners in the Veterans Division: Sean Dowling, Sayville-3:25:28.5, Jennifer Coon, Massachusettes-5:41:10.6 The male winner of the Active Duty Military category was: Timothy O’Connor, Maryland-3:11:42.3 Among those who completed the half marathon were two veterans in their 80s: 84 year-old Howard Kestenbaum of Plainview and 82 year-old Harold Daus of Terryville. Along with raising funds for the veterans, the Suffolk County Marathon was a qualifier for the 2016 Boston Marathon. Sunday’s race was held on the last day for most registrants who want to quality for the world-
renowned race. “On behalf of our 1.5 million residents in Suffolk County, we are forever grateful for the commitment and sacrifices that our veterans and active service men and women make every day to protect our freedom,” said Suffolk County Executive Steve Bellone. “Expanding and enhancing services for our heroes when they return home is vital, that is why we were here today and that is why every dollar of the proceeds from the event will go towards doing exactly that. It was an absolute privilege to run my second marathon alongside with these heroes and supporters as we helped the veterans in our community with each step we took.”
The Islip Town Board was recently joined by members of local volunteer fire departments, clergy, and other local leaders at a ceremony that paid tribute to all those who lost their lives in the terror attacks of September 11th, 2001. The ceremony, which took place at the Town’s 9/11 Memorial located just outside of Town Hall, is part of Islip’s annual tradition to honor the members of the Islip community who
died in the attacks. Local volunteer firefighters led a solemn parade through Main Street, before Islip Town Supervisor Angie Carpenter offered brief remarks on the importance of the day. The Islip Town Board then read the names of the ninety people from Islip who were killed on that day. “It’s been 14 years since the 9/11 attacks, and the families of those who perished on 9/11 have
had to live with that pain each and every day,” said Supervisor Carpenter. “We have a responsibility to never forget the pain that these families endure, and to always honor those who are willing to put their lives on the line for their neighbors.” The ceremony concluded with representatives of local police, fire, and EMS departments laying a wreath at the Town’s 9/11 Memorial.

The Long Island Game Farm will be going into hibernation on Tuesday, October 13th, but the animals aren’t going anywhere just yet. Instead, the zoo has increased its Facebook coupon to $4 off admission and has updated its fall hours and show schedule for the remainder of the season. At the largest combined Children’s Zoo and Wildlife Park on Long Island, guests can see hundreds of animals and get up close and personal with some of their favorite exotic critters. Visitors to the free Leapin’ Lemur Tour at Lemur Circle will have the opportunity to learn about these creatures, which hail from the African subcontinent. Each day, an animal expert from the Game Farm will discuss the lemurs’ habitat, what they eat and how they communicate. Take Heart With Tea An apple a day may keep the doctor away, but a recent study found drinking tea might keep the cardiologist at bay.
The USDA reported that men and women who drank black tea for three weeks reduced their total and bad
cholesterol (LDL) levels by an average of 7.5 percent. Researchers concluded that drinking tea may reduce the
risk of coronary heart disease. Antioxidants called flavonoids, found in both green and black teas, are thought to
be potent weapons in the fight against heart disease. That news may be especially important
for women, given that heart disease kills more women than all forms of cancer combined including breast cancer.
