Some will say the summer months flew by in the blink of an eye; others will say they dragged on unbearably. How drastic are the differences in perception from one person to another. It’s funny how things seem to move in fast forward once the school year gets underway. Halloween decorations have been out in full force for weeks, with Christmas not far behind. That spring cleaning that we’ve been putting off until fall is now begging for our attention. As the leaves begin to turn, can outdoor cleanups be far behind as well? In the entertainment world, gone are the evenings of summer concerts under the stars, replaced instead by nights spent in front of

That baseball season which once seemed endless on opening day in April is now nearing its final stretch, as playoff pictures begin to take shape. All this, while football season takes over, and each Sunday’s activities become dictated by the game schedule of your favorite team. Soon enough, all roads heading eastward will be jammed with traffic as the masses scramble to take advantage of each beautiful autumn weekend. Pumpkin picking, apple picking, hayrides, corn mazes… so much to accomplish in so little time. And yet, there is always precisely the same amount of time. It’s all in how we choose to use it. A good family friend of mine recently commented that we all tend to live as though we have this list of obligations

to complete, rather than taking a step back and simply experiencing each moment as it happens. There is very little we actually have to do; in fact, almost nothing is required within a particular time frame. And so, we can afford to relax a bit, to take our time transitioning, whether it is from one season to the next or something larger and more significant to our personal lives. So, while the calendar may indicate autumn just a few days from now, that doesn’t mean we need to give up enjoying the warmth of the sun, or throw away our remaining summer plants in favor of mums and pumpkins. All in good time. Autumn is a season of transition in itself, a cross-section of weather and activities, even fashion. A season of plenty. Plenty to appreciate. Plenty to embrace. Plenty to enjoy.

The Long Island Council on Alcoholism and Drug Dependence (LICADD) is pleased to announce its upcoming 37th annual R. Brinkley Smithers Golf Invitational. This landmark charity tournament will take place on Tuesday, October 3rd. Participants will have their choice of teeing off at Meadow Brook Club in Jericho, or Piping Rock Club in Locust Valley. As the drug epidemic is front page news almost every day, the important work of LICADD is more vital than ever. Named for LICADD Founder, R. Brinkley Smithers, the tournament’s proceeds ensure that the services LICADD provides - from screening, intervention and referral services, to recovery support, prevention education, an Employee Assistance Program and mentoringall remain accessible to the individuals and families who are most affected by drug and alcohol abuse on Long Island. No one is ever turned away from receiving services due to financial hardship. This high energy, fast-paced event offers a challenging round on two of Long Island’s premier courses. the walk support Outreach, the Queens and Long Island-based organization dedicated to helping teens and adults fight drug and alcohol addiction. The parents and children of John Brower, Jr. formed the foundation to heighten awareness about substance abuse and to help raise funds to end the drug epidemic that has had an adverse effect on Long Island. After being introduced to Outreach shortly after their son’s passing, the Browers were impressed by the organization’s dedication to help those struggling with addiction. They decided to target all the group’s fundraising for the agency. To date, the Brower family has donated more than $39,000 to Outreach. “The Brower family is one of too many Long Island families who have experienced the heartbreak of opiate addiction,” said Kathleen Riddle, president of Outreach. “We join the Browers in their mission to do all we can to raise awareness for teens and young adults so additional families do not have to lose a loved one to substance abuse. The Brower family has been tremendously generous and devoted to the cause. We are enormously thankful for their support.” “It’s been more than four years since we lost our son,” said John Brower, Sr., “but his memory is with us every day as is our determination to continue fighting addiction. LI Hops, a 43-acre farm located in the North Fork wine region of Long Island will again host the Long Island Fresh Hop Fest - the largest fresh hop fest on the east coast - on Saturday, September 23rd. The event will offer sampling of special locally brewed beers made with locally grown and harvested hops, many brewed in small batches for this event only. Plus this year, attendees will also be able to enjoy locally crafted pumpkin beers like the Pumpkin Spice ale from Long Island’s newest brewery, Jamesport Farm Brewery; limited-release seasonal brews like Long Ireland Brewing Company’s Octoberfest, a Märzenstyle lager; or hopped cider from Stowe, Urban Farm Fermentory, Cidergeist, or Indian Ladder Farm Cidery and Brewery, visiting from
the Hudson Valley. The attendees will enjoy an afternoon of beer and cider sampling, hop farming education, and live music. Connetquot Public Library “Nano Mechanical Properties of Breast Ductal Carcinoma MDA-MB-231, MDA-MB-4175, MCF-7” and “Normal Breast Ductal Cells MCF-10A and their Extracellular Matrices.” She has delved deeply into the subject by investigating the biophysical properties of living cells utilizing atomic force microscopy. Daniel Waxman, a fourth-year science research student from Sachem High School East, was accepted into the 2017 High School Research Program at Brookhaven National Laboratory. Waxman’s concentration in particle physics allowed him to utilize the Relativistic Heavy Ion Collider at the laboratory. His work during the summer was centered on
programming computers to identify the particles that resulted as products from the collisions within the ion collider. The title of Waxman’s work is “STAR Particle Identification using Machine Learning Algorithms,” and this study contributes toward a better understanding of particle physics. Both students will enter their research projects in the 2017 Siemens Competition for Math, Science and Technology. Fall Luncheon Connetquot Retired Teachers Association (CRTA) President Peter Leis welcomed returning and newly retired teachers to the first luncheon of the 2017-2018 school year. Held at Captain Bill’s Restaurant in Bay Shore, the CRTA held it’s annual business meeting and first fund-raising gettogether on September 13th. The CRTA grants two $1,000 scholarships to the children, or grandchildren, of retired Connetquot teachers, at its May luncheon. Over 75 retired Connetquot School
District educators, spouses and friends, joined to catch up on the news, enjoy a tasty lunch and continue the CRTA fundraising efforts. CRTA President Peter Leis said that the organization meets “… three times per year, at which time we can share updates on legal, medical, financial matters, and trips that are arranged for our members.” CRTA Secretary, Pat Duda, distributed a directory of current members which included addresses and email contacts.
The organization also provides financial support for such efforts as Make a Wish Foundation, Walk for Breast Cancer, ALS Society and local food pantries. Prize baskets were available for those eager to buy raffle tickets. Ticket sales are also applied towards the May scholarship presentation. Among the September luncheon attendees was former Peconic Street (now Ronkonkoma) Middle School Principal, and Connetquot School CRTA LUNCHEON - Former principal, and later Connetquot School District District Superintendent Superintendent, Mr. John S. More than 200 runners turned out for the Islip Breast Cancer Coalition’s 3rd Annual Miles of Hope 5K Sunday, September 10th. Town Supervisor Angie Carpenter congratulated runners, and was joined by Town Councilwoman Mary Kate Mullen, Councilman Steve Flotteron and Suffolk
Legislator Tom Cilmi. The event was held in the heart of Islip, with the course taking runners down scenic South Bay Avenue to Islip Beach on the Great South Bay, and back to Town Hall. First place went to Councilwoman Mullen. Event organizer Gina Cacoperdo was
accompanied by her team from the coalition, and breast cancer survivors, who proudly displayed their number of years cancer-free. Representatives from Pink Aid generously donated a check for $10,000 to the Islip Breast Cancer Coalition.

North Fork by Trolley Suffolk County Executive Steve Bellone today announced the official launch of the “Experience the North Fork by Trolley” shuttle service that will operate for 10 straight Saturdays beginning September 9th and running through November 11th. The scheduled service will be divided into two service phases: Phase one will service the Greenport loop from September 9th to October 7th, and Phase two will serve the Mattituck-
Peconic loop from October 14th to November 11th. “We are excited to introduce this new experiential trolley service on the North Fork to serve our residents and visitors,” said Suffolk County Executive Bellone. “Suffolk County’s North Fork is quickly becoming a top tourist destination and it is as scenic as it is historic. Our goal is to share this experience with our residents and visitors in a stress-free fashion that is important to enhancing
tourism in our region.” The trolley service will cost $10 for standard allday pass, $3 for senior citizens, and kids under the age of three ride for free. Customers are encourage to download the “Go North Fork” App to track the location of the trolley. Tickets can be purchased in advance online at https:// www.hamptonluxuryliner. com/. The trolley services will complement existing transit services such as ferries, the Long Island
Rail Road, Suffolk Transit, and private bus services. In addition, they will provide an affordable and reliable connection between the North Fork’s unique downtowns, businesses and natural assets. Visitors will be able to leave their cars behind while experiencing North Fork wine country and the local farms, parks, B&B and shops that characterize this unique region. The North Fork attracts visitors looking to experience its farms,
vineyards, fisheries, restaurants, shopping, and exceptional natural assets, including beaches, historic landmarks, and open spaces. As such, Suffolk County is supporting a $200,000 Empire State Development grant application to extend trolley services in 2018 for a full Spring to Fall season. The application also proposed to extend trolley services into the Town of Riverhead. Suffolk County Economic Development &
Planning had been working with multiple partners in the region to help develop transportation options in the region that will reduce traffic and create convenient tourist experiences. These partners include the North Fork Promotion Council, the East End Tourism Alliance, the Long Island Wine Council, the Town of Southold, the Village of Greenport, and the Long Island Railroad.

Henck and showed tremendous appreciation for the workmanship that went into installing such a outstanding turf field. In addition, Detective Brian Curry, President of the Fifth Precinct Alliance, presented Sayville with a generous donation of $15,000 to fund the Sergeant Timothy J. Henck Memorial Field scoreboard. The celebration of this hometown hero was well attended. Henck’s widow Kathy and his daughter Jennifer, who was six weeks when he died, were touched by the sentiments of the Sayville School District, Board of Education and the many members of the SCPD who came out in force to show their respect, including John Cowie, President of Superior Officers Association, James Hughes, President Detectives Association and Noel DiGeroloam, President of the PBA. “I hope,” Dr. Stimmel said in closing, that all who use this field will “remember Sergeant Henck and the ideals that he stood for.”

The Sayville School District in collaboration with the Suffolk County Police Department held a special dedication ceremony at the new Sayville Multisport Athletic Turf Field to honor a Sayville graduate: Sergeant Timothy J. Henck, a Sayville resident, a husband, and new father, who died in the line of duty in 1995. His great sacrifice was also a tremendous loss to many in the community. Not one to forget, the Sayville community and the SCPD had set up a memorial stone and plaque situated in a lovely garden on the northeast corner of the athletic field in the late nineties. However, it was after the Bond Referendum - which included funding the installation of a turf field - had passed in May of 2015, that the Sayville School District Board of Education and District Administrators held discussions about the construction of the field and agreed to name the turf field in honor of Sayville’s hometown hero. The recent dedication ceremony, held on a beautiful Saturday, September 9th, 2017, was a moving tribute to Henck’s legacy. The Suffolk County Police Officer’s Emerald Society Pipe Band marched onto the field to open the ceremony and Sayville Sophomore Isabella Arzt sang the National Anthem. While Sayville Superintendent Dr. John Stimmel welcomed everyone to the ceremony - during which the SCPD Helicopter flew overhead as an aerial salute - he acknowledged the dedication and commitment of

On behalf of the entire Sachem community, we wish them all the best in this incredible musical opportunity.” The process for selecting an All-State musician is rigorous and includes teacher recommendations, audition scores at the NYSSMA solo evaluation festival during the prior spring, and participation in other performing organizations.
COMMEMORATIVE WREATH - Students from the Horticulture Program at Eastern Suffolk BOCES Islip Career Center expressed their creativity and honored those lives that were lost on September 11th, 2001 with a wreath fabricated from red, white and blue flowers and adorned with ribbons and several American flags. The wreath is on display outside the building in the rock and flower garden also constructed by Horticulture students. Reflecting on Patriot Day Students throughout the Connetquot Central School District came together as one on Patriot Day and paid tribute to the individuals who lost their lives on September 11th, 2001. Staff and students at John Pearl Elementary School dressed in patriotic colors, recited the Pledge of Allegiance and sang patriotic songs. Principal
Susan White also joined the students in singing ‘Together, We Can Reach Our Goals,’ the John Pearl Elementary School song. Ms. White talked to the students about patriotism and heroes, past and present, including students’ parents, teachers, local firefighters and members of the police and ambulance services. Online Auction Begins The Village of Mastic Beach, New York, has begun a complete village dissolution of all government assets including Village owned real estate. The decision comes after the referendum on November 16th, 2016, when the residents of Mastic Beach voted to dissolve the village; citing rising taxes as the most pressing issue pushing voters towards dissolution. The liquidation of assets will be conducted through a series of continuous government online auctions. All sales will be coordinated and overseen by Buffalo, New York based online auction company Auctions International. The auctions will be ongoing and continue until December 20th, 2017 or until all items have been sold. “As of January 1st, the Village will no longer exist,” cites Mayor of Mastic
Beach, Robert Miller. “Trucks, automobiles, heavy equipment, landscaping tools, mowers office equipment, and all village owned real estate are among the items people can bid on between now and end of December. The money collected from this auction will go to pay any debt owed of the people of Village of Mastic Beach so that we return to the Town of Brookhaven free of debt. The first group of items up for auction were posted September 7th of this year, and currently available for viewing and bidding on the Auctions International website www. auctionsinternational.com They are: public works construction equipment, double wide office trailer, office equipment, park benches and a lighted flag pole. In addition a Village wide real estate online auction including the
Village Hall and Village DPW building, a single family home and all of their surrounding property will commence October through November of this year. “Our goal through this dissolution is to help the Village get the best returns,” states RJ Klisiewicz, Operations Manager of Auctions International. “This is a great opportunity for community residents to bid and purchase village assets, some of which may hold sentimental value such as the park benches and flag pole.
