Sayville Accepts The Challenge Fortunately it was a sweltering, hot day on September 5th when Sayville School District accepted the ALS Ice Bucket Challenge from Bayport-Blue Point Superintendent of Schools Dr. Vincent Butera, Administrators, and Board of Education. As the ice buckets were prepared by eager High School students, Sayville School District

Superintendent Dr. Walter Schartner (5th seat from left in photo) expressed his willingness on behalf of the Sayville school community to participate in this worthy cause. Dr. Schartner was not alone in bringing awareness to ALS. Supported by his fellow Sayville Administrators and Board of Education members (see below), everyone proved a good sport and took the cold

shock of freezing water in good fun. In addition, Dr. Schartner nominated Islip Schools Superintendent Susan A. Schnebel, along with her Administrators and Board of Education, to further the awareness movement. Free CPR Classes Suffolk County Executive Steve Bellone announced today that the Department Health Services’ Division of Emergency Medical Services will conduct a series of “CompressionOnly” Cardio-Pulmonary Resuscitation (CPR) classes. This one-hour class is free of charge and open to persons of all ages who are capable of compressing another person’s chest. “Our goal is to get as many people in Suffolk County trained in CPR as possible so we can improve survival rates for out-of-hospital cardiac arrests,” said County Executive Bellone. “The beauty in this method is that bystanders who witness a cardiac arrest and may not

want to perform mouthto-mouth resuscitation on strangers may be much more willing to perform chest-compression-only CPR.” “We urge all people in Suffolk County to become CPR trained,” said Dr. James Tomarken, Suffolk County Commissioner of Health Services. “Many of those who experience cardiac arrest at home, work or in a public location die because they don’t receive immediate CPR from someone on the scene. CPR can vastly improve a person’s chances of survival. This class offers an opportunity to be prepared for such an event.” Classes will be offered on Wednesday September 17th,

beginning at 7:00 p.m. at the locations listed below. First Day Fun

Faculty and staff of the Bayport-Blue Point School District welcomed happy students back to classes on September 4th. With smiles as warm as the weather outside, students at all five schools – Bayport-Blue Point High School, James Wilson

Young Middle School, and Academy Street, Blue Point and Sylvan Avenue elementary schools – returned with confidence, ready to resume their academic careers. “Today we welcomed 180 members of the freshmen class, and our

school is once again full of life and youthful energy,” said Bayport-Blue Point High School Principal Dr. Gaurav Passi. “We all look forward to an exciting year of learning,” Sylvan Avenue Principal Alane Dugan added.

Bayport-Blue Point High School and Sylvan Avenue Elementary School were recently recognized by New York State as Reward Schools. This is the third straight time the high school has been honored, while it’s the first time Sylvan Avenue has received this accolade. “This recognition is testament to the hard

work and dedication of our students and their teachers,” said high school Principal Dr. Gaurav Passi. “We are proud to be recognized by New York State for high achievement.” “The faculty and staff at Sylvan Avenue are working hard to meet the expectations of the Common Core through

Ambulance Member Honored

The Islip Town Board recently honored Jennifer Hartmann, a Critical Care Emergency Medical Technician and a Captain at Community Ambulance Company, who has worked endlessly to save the lives of others within our community. at a local doctor’s office. Due to the severity of the patient’s condition, EMS was requested and within two minutes, Jennifer arrived at the scene. After acquiring a 12 Lead EKG and confirming with the physician, it was confirmed that the patient was actively having a heart attack. Jennifer knew to begin intravenous access and administered emergency medication to help stabilize the patient’s

vital signs. She stayed and cared for the patient while being transported to the hospital. It was due to her quick reaction and vital knowledge that the patient was able to get to the hospital quickly, be treated, and ultimately, make a full recovery. Jennifer has been an inspiration to all members of the Community Ambulance Company, along with all those within our community.

Crunched By Tech By: Jamie Lynn Ryan In an age where technology has overtaken society, it is only natural to pause periodically and wonder, at what cost? These days, most everything can be communicated via text, various messenger apps, social networks and emoticons, with little reserved for good oldfashioned person-to-person contact. As the masses jump on the latest smartphones and tablets the moment they’re unveiled, it is hard not to think how did we manage to exist before? Personally, I did not own a cell phone until the later college years, if even then. Prior to that, it was

payphones and asking the teacher for a pass to the Main Office to call home in an emergency. Nowadays, walk into any elementary school and smartphones are just as common a trend as the latest sneakers and accessories. What’s wrong with this picture? Plenty. First off, no eight year-old needs a smartphone. An old, hand-me-down standard cell phone in case of emergencies? Perhaps. And once you move on to middle school and high school, the potential for cheating, texting during class and surfing the web instead of paying attention to the lesson at hand skyrockets. I don’t care

what disciplinary actions are set in place; the integrity of the classroom immediately declines with each cell phone that enters. This is not to say that those in college or the workforce are any better equipped to balance the technology they “have to have” with a little thing called reality. No, we are just as likely to send 47 text messages rather than have a phone conversation, to use a cute little smiley face in favor of typing an entire word, to keep in touch via Facebook rather than schedule a lunch date... That said, I am eagerly awaiting the arrival of my newly pre-ordered iPhone 6 :)

Mr. Anthony Felicio, Jr., President of the Connetquot Teachers Association (CTA) recently congratulated his membership for their generous support of the ‘Birthdays in a Box’ program. Teachers and students from throughout the district collected gifts, and wrapped boxes to store the donations for 25 children. The organization ‘Birthday Wishes’ arranges birthday parties for homeless children who often feel neglected, and unloved.

This non-profit organization, now in it’s 11th year, collects donations from teachers, school children, and businesses, and provides a special occasion for homeless children. In 2013 ‘Birthday Wishes’ organized more than 600 such birthday parties. Connetquot teachers were asked to consider contributing to these ‘Birthdays in a Box’, by donating items such as balloons, paper goods, hats, gifts, craft projects or birthday banners.

Contributors were also asked to consider decorating boxes that would be used to carry the items necessary for that ‘special’ birthday celebration. Felicio thanked his members for their support and encouraged them to continue to assist ‘Birthday Wishes’ in making all children feel remembered, and loved. A Big Year Each year, as fall approaches, I catch myself reflecting upon the past year. 2014 was a huge one for me, as it marked the beginning of the next chapter in my academic career. This year, I started at Villanova University. From what I can tell, Villanova is the right place for me. I’ve already gotten pretty involved, and I feel very welcome here. From the renowned orientation process, I was able to garner an understanding of the qualities that Villanova was founded upon - Caritas, Veritas, Unitas. These Latin words translate to mean Charity, Truth and Unity.

For nearly two centuries, Villanova has been producing bright minds using those three values. I’m proud to say that I have the opportunity to experience everything this university has to offer. As important as the transition to school was for me, this year wasn’t all about college. Over the summer, I strengthened bonds with friends and family. I’ve never felt tighter with my coworkers, because they finally stopped viewing me as a kid. My years on Fire Island have afforded me many things, including new employment opportunities and a unique outlook on life.

A few months ago, I graduated high school. This was a big marker in my life. My grandfather passed away in August. He was very important to me, and I think about him all the time. I went to the National Championships for Rowing this year. As the culmination of four years of hard work, it was something I will be forever proud of. On a less personal note, my community grew. We welcomed new neighbors, businesses and opportunities. In just a few short months, my life has changed dramatically. I guess you can say it has been a big year.

Islip Town Clerk Olga Murray was recently joined by the Islip Town Board in honoring members of the Community Ambulance Company of Sayville, members of the 5th Precinct of the Suffolk County Police Department and the Bayport Fire Department for their role in saving the life of an 18-month-old child that

was drowning. These heroes responded to a call for a pediatric drowning victim on July 22nd, in Sayville, where they successfully resuscitated the child and transported her to the hospital, where in time, she made a full recovery. All individuals involved in these life-saving efforts where given an official

Town of Islip Certificate of Recognition during a special presentation at Islip Town Hall where Clerk Murray stressed that it was due to the quick response of all involved, as well as the teamwork, communication, and the determination to save this little girl, she now has a second chance at life.

described Bayport-Blue Point Library Director Mike Firestone. “Libraries need to expand their outreach, services and expertise into the community, which has led us to create the ELA iPad initiative with the JWY Middle School.” The Bayport-Blue Point Library loaned 60 iPad Minis to two English Language Arts (ELA) teachers who are working with sixth grade students at the JWY Middle School to support the ELA curriculum. The iPads include the Library’s e-reader platform for e-books as well as direct Apps to the Library’s online tools. “Partnering with the Bayport-Blue Point Library on the Pad initiative enables the district to pilot new technology, expose more of our students to the public library and enhance our curriculum by providing our students with greater access to information,” stated Assistant Superintendent of Curriculum and Instruction Dr. Tim Hearney. The sixth grade students will use the iPads during the academic year. They will be returned to the Library during school breaks for updating and maintenance and will be made available for public use in the summertime. “We anticipate the success of this pilot iPad initiative – as well as to the increased usage of our e-books and e-resources – and look forward to expanding this pilot program with grant funding in the future,” said Firestone.

LOCAL STUDENTS HONORED - Islip Town Supervisor Tom Croci, alongside the Islip Town Board, recently honored three local students at a Town Board Meeting for their determination and commitment to bettering their lives and the lives of others. Logan Hillery, Ashley Daigle and Kaity Finley, students from the Sayville School District, recently completed a program called the Career Development and Functional Academics program, which helps prepare students for the transitions from school into the workplace. This program helps these students to develop the skills needed to succeed in a professional environment. These three students worked at the Joyce Fitzpatrick Senior Center, completing various responsibilities and tasks.

Supplies For Success

Eastern Suffolk BOCES (ESBOCES) students received free backpacks from UJA-Federation of New York through its Supplies for Success initiative that provides school supplies for children in need. Supplies for Success is in its 13th year on Long Island and recently expanded to the East end. Lead Social Worker Jen Farnum-Weber of ESBOCES was the driving force behind getting 200 backpacks for ESBOCES students. She worked

collaboratively with UJAFederation and social workers throughout ESBOCES to determine need and appropriate distribution. Program Administrator for Student Support Services Liz Melichar traveled out to Bridgehampton to pick up the 200 backpacks slated for ESBOCES students in grades K-12. The backpacks were filled with appropriate items for grade levels K-2, 3-5, and 6-12. She said, “We want our students to have a great

start in their educational career.” UJA-Federation Chair Mindy Richenstein cited the mission statement of UJA-FED organization that every child should start school on a level playing field because education is the recognized pathway out of poverty. UJA-Federation of New York is an organization known for its philanthropy and Supplies for Success. This year Supplies for Success filled and distributed over 9,000 backpacks.
