5 Tips to Prepare for Window Replacement

1. Get several estimates. Ask for recommendations from neighbors or other people in your area on which companies they used to install their replacement windows.

When you interview the prospects, ask several questions about how they go about installing the windows. Questions can include: • How long will the project take? • Will I need to remain home during the process? • Do you discard of old debris? • What is the protocol for installation during inclement weather? 2. Invest in durable windows that will have staying power. Consumer Reports offers unbiased reviews on various window brands and can help homeowners make sound decisions. 5. Prepare for installation. Clear pathways, remove window treatments and disconnect window alarm systems. Plan for one to two days of installation, advises Andersen Windows and Doors. Keep pets and children away from work areas. Replacement windows can be a smart investment. New windows can improve the look of a home, reduce heating costs and can keep interior spaces comfortable.

Fortunately, there’s an easy action you can take to prevent this from happening, and it is to apply decals that reflect ultraviolet sunlight to your home’s windows, particularly those windows that are highly reflective of open sky. Doing so has been proven to substantially reduce the likelihood of bird strikes. Winter is coming, and for millions of people who reside in areas of the country that see the mercury drop considerably between December and March, that means prioritizing staying warm. Suffolk County libraries, donated its 3D printer to the Suffolk Cooperative Library System for an initiative creating Personal Protective Equipment (PPE). The parts created from this unique project were used to assemble face shields and donated to Stony Brook University Hospital. The library is privileged to begin its own initiative by creating 3D printed face shields and no-touch tools for our members, upon request and free of charge. Our primary objective with this initiative is to limit the exposure of COVID-19 for our library members and staff. The face shield is intended to be worn in conjunction with a traditional face mask. New York Blood Center Encourages Blood Donors To Schedule Appointments

New York Blood Center is calling on the community to make appointments to visit donor centers as COVID-19 has fundamentally changed the process of donating blood. Before COVID-19, mobile blood drives hosted by high schools, colleges, businesses and other organizations made up about 75% of the region’s incoming blood supply, but the number of blood drives has dropped by twothirds this year due to the pandemic. The upcoming school year presents new and unprecedented challenges. Blood donations are typically lower during the summer and the return to school usually helps make up the difference and stabilize the blood supply. In the past, school and college drives have resulted in 75,000 blood donations during each school year. “The pandemic is forcing us to rethink the entire landscape, which means encouraging donors to take the extra step of

making an appointment and traveling to a donor center. The loss of young donors is a particular challenge because our future blood supply is dependent on these firsttime donors becoming lifetime donors,” said Andrea H. Cefarelli, Senior Executive Director of Recruitment & Marketing for New York Blood Center. “We’ve always relied on the fall to provide a boost in blood donations from high school and college students hosting drives and this year we know this relief will not be coming.” NYBC began hosting a limited number of drives again this summer, however they are far from the number of drives per month needed to support area hospitals. NYBC is encouraging eligible donors of all ages to adapt to this new normal by making appointments to visit a one of its 19 donors centers, which have expanded capacity and hours of operation in order safely accommodate more

donors. The West Islip Breast Cancer Coalition for Long Island, Inc. (WIBCC) is a non-profit grassroots organization that was founded in 1992. They work to eradicate Breast Cancer and gynecological cancers. Their mission is to provide support services to women undergoing treatment and requiring postmastectomy care with their “Lead A Helping Hand” program, and to actively promote cancer and environmental awareness with education, advocacy and outreach throughout the community.

To accomplish their mission, they focus on prevention, research, education, services, their Lend a Helping Hand program and awareness. WIBCC has remained open throughout the pandemic and are truly here to serve our community. This coalition serves all of Long Island, not just West Islip. As like many other non-profit organizations, WIBCC holds various fundraising events throughout the year to gain awareness and collect funds in support of their mission. This September they are part of Stop & Shop’s Community Bag Program. WIBCC will receive a $1 donation every time a $2.50 reusable Community Bag is purchased at 400 Union Blvd in West Islip, unless otherwise directed by the customer through the Giving Tag attached to the bag. Additionally, they are participating in John’s Crazy Socks Giving Back Program, which started September 1st and will run through October 31st. John’s Crazy Socks is a fatherson social enterprise that was inspired by John Lee Cronin, a young man with Down Syndrome and his love of colorful and fun socks, or what he calls his “crazy socks”. Next month they will present Pink Flags of October, a month-long event to honor and remember those affected by Breast Cancer. Hundreds of pink flags will be placed at the entrance of Good Samaritan Hospital. You have the opportunity to purchase a ribbon in honor of or in memory of someone whose life has been affected by Breast Cancer. These ribbons will be tied to the flags and together the flags and ribbons will fly for the entire month of October. On Sunday, September 27 from 12-2PM at The Cancer Institute (111 Beach Drive in West Islip), there will be a ceremony to celebrate this month-long event, which will include health information, light refreshments and more. If you purchase a ribbon, you can attend the event and place the name of whom it is in honor of or in memory of right on the ribbon itself. If you cannot attend, it will be placed for you. Get Ahead of Chimney Repair This Season Woodburning fireplaces or fuel stoves can add warmth and ambiance to a home. These appliances are particularly coveted in the cooler months when people spend more time indoors. Maintenance is necessary in order for fireplaces and stoves to function safely, and that upkeep must include paying close attention to the functionality of the chimney. Chimneys are designed to last for decades. Cracks and spalling in brick chimneys are common concerns that can cause significant damage if left unchecked. Chimney maintenance involves more than cleaning the flue. Rather than running the risk of costly repairs, which can cost several thousand dollars, homeowners can take some simple steps to keep their chimneys in tip-top shape. Certain components of chimney maintenance are doit-yourself tasks, while others may be better left to the professionals. • Start from the inside and ensure that dampers are working properly. When using fireplaces and other appliances, dampers need to be open to allow smoke to vent outside; otherwise, smoke will be trapped in the home and could lead to carbon monoxide buildup. Dampers need to be fixed or replaced if they are not operational. Restore Rusty Tools Many people may be tempted to discard rusty tools that have gone unused and sat in a garage or shed for a significant period of time. But tools encrusted with rust do not need to be relegated to the trash bin, nor do gardeners have to toil for hours scraping and sanding off

the rust. There’s a much easier way to restore rusty tools that relies on a common household ingredient: vinegar. Pour vinegar into a deep enough vessel to submerge the metal part of the tool. Soak the tool overnight. The next day, use a scouring pad to rub off the rust. If the tool is

too big to fit into a can or bucket, simply wrap it with a vinegar-soaked rag and cover the whole tool with a tightly secured plastic bag. Follow the same procedure the next day. After all the rust is gone, rinse the tool in cool water and dry thoroughly. Then return it to regular usage.

The Sayville Garden Club has been very active this spring and summer. Despite not being able hold meetings since March due to the Covid 19 Virus, the members have continued to engage in activities that support and beautify our wonderful community. The garden at Sparrow Park was cleaned and planted with vibrant red geraniums for Memorial Day and continues to be a bright spot in the center of town. Another group keeps the 9/11 Memorial Garden, on River Road, in pristine condition with weekly trimming and weeding. Other member volunteers water and maintain the plantings

around Gillette House and the Herb Garden at Edwards Homestead, in addition to participating in Islip’s KIC Program by cleaning up a portion of Main Street. Since they were not able to plant their large vegetable garden at Meadow Croft this year, many of the members are growing vegetables in their own gardens to continue our donations to the Food Pantry. In June, scholarships of $1,000 were awarded to students in Sayville and Bayport Blue Point High Schools for their interest in pursuing studies in environmental areas. An additional project the Garden Club

undertook was to support approximately 25 local merchants and restaurants that were forced to close because of the pandemic, by purchasing gift cards. Those certificates were then given to local volunteers who have donated their services to those in need during the pandemic. By doing this, the benefits were twofold; it helped the businesses where they were purchased and thanked the volunteers who received them. The Sayville Garden Club has a long history of being a vital, supportive group in the community and strives to continue with their many and varied programs to benefit our town.

Weik Calls For More Day Care Help For LI Families As schools and businesses reopen, State Senate candidate Alexis Weik says Long Island families need more help in finding quality, affordable child care, and she’s calling on the state to expand a key tax credit to make services more affordable and

accessible. “As a working mother, I know firsthand the challenges of finding quality child care that is both affordable and safe. Now, with schools reopening, including many using a ‘hybrid’ model, and more New Yorkers trying to get back to work, we

need to help families who need quality and affordable child care and ensure our children stay safe and healthy,” Weik said. “The federal CARES Act already provided funds to states to help with child care, but these funds are sitting unused. We need to

release these funds and make them available now to support families that need it most.” Weik joined in supporting a measure proposed by Republican Senators to double the existing state tax credit to help families pay child care costs. In the Senate,

Weik said she would cosponsor the bill, and seek to extend it so that the credit is available to more middle class families. The proposal would be funded through $70 million in federal assistance the state has already received for child care expenses.

Only about $1 million of that funding has been spent so far. Weik, currently the elected Receiver of Taxes for the Town of Islip is the RepublicanConservative candidate for the Senate’s 3rd District, comprising parts of the Towns of Brookhaven and Islip.

Sachem Central School District Appoints Next Superintendent Of Schools Following a rigorous search and screening process, the Sachem Central School District Board of Education is proud to announce the appointment of the district’s next Superintendent of Schools, Dr. Christopher Pellettieri. Dr. Pellettieri will begin his role in the district on Sept. 1, 2020. Prior to joining Sachem, Dr. Pellettieri served as the assistant superintendent for curriculum and instruction in the Rockville Centre Union Free School District for 12 years, where he led the district in implementing progressive curriculum and development initiatives which greatly enhanced the educational experience for students across grade levels. As part of his oversight of

the district’s instructional technology, Dr. Pellettieri successfully piloted a digital Earth Science Portal to replace the course textbook, spearheaded a 1:1 program utilizing iPads in grades 4-12 and led the district’s recent Chromebooks initiative at the high school level. Additionally, he helped develop and maintain the district’s Foreign Language Elementary Program and aided in the development of International Baccalaureate for all in junior-year English and social studies classes. Bolstering his impressive administrative résumé, Dr. Pellettieri worked closely with the Rockville Centre Education Foundation and has helped garner over $500,000 in grants for the district, including the building of a STEAM lab,

robotics programs K-12, an Innovation Lab at South Side High School and a weather station at South Side Middle School. “After reviewing countless qualified candidates to serve as our district’s next superintendent, it was clear Dr. Pellettieri possessed the progressive skillset and vision to continue our district’s commitment to educational excellence and student success,” said Sachem Central School District Board of Education President Alex Piccirillo. “We are proud to welcome him to our community and are confident he will serve our students, staff and families well.” Dr. Pellettieri has been an Education Policy Fellow at NYU’s Teachers College, attended the Harvard Future of Learning

Zeldin Announces Expansion of Military Child Care Assistance Congressman Lee Zeldin (R, NY-1), an Army veteran who continues to serve as a Lieutenant Colonel in the Army Reserve, announced the United States Air Force has designated Long Island a high cost area, allowing active duty Air Force service members to receive child care tuition assistance from the Department of Defense

(DOD) for use at approved local child care providers. Earlier this year, Congressman Zeldin’s office initiated an inquiry with the Air Force through the Department of Defense to reassess its cost of living determination for New York’s First Congressional District, home of Gabreski Air National Guard Base. This review

resulted in all of Long Island being designated as a high cost area, making active duty Air Force service members eligible for child care tuition assistance. “Long Island is one of the most beautiful places in America to call home, but it also boasts one of the highest costs of living in the country,” said Congressman Zeldin.

Mulched leaves also served to control future weed growth by covering up bare spots between turf plants. Such spots typically provided openings for weed seeds to germinate and ultimately infect lawns. In fact, researchers found that

mulching leaves for just three years could produce a nearly 100 percent decrease in dandelion and crabgrass growth. Homeowners with mulching mowers that also have bags can even help their gardens by alternating using the mower with and without the bag on once leaves begin to fall. When mowing with the bag on, mulched leaves can then be used as mulch in landscape beds and vegetable gardens.
