After the iconic towers fell, thoughts turned to the best ways to commemorate the memories of the people lost on 9/11, as well as the heroism that took place on that fateful September day. Out of the rubble came The National September 11 Memorial and Museum. Millions of people have visited the memorial, which opened to the public on September 12, 2011, and the museum, which opened on May 21, 2014. Many tourists make it a point to visit the National September 11 Memorial and Museum when traveling to New York City. The memorial portion was the first to open and includes twin reflecting pools that are each nearly an acre in size and feature the largest manmade waterfalls in North America. The pools sit within the footprints of where the Twin Towers once stood. In the memorial plaza, visitors will find trees harvested from locations within a 500-mile radius of the WTC site, and additional trees coming from locations in Pennsylvania and Maryland. Visitors will also see the “Survivor Tree,” which was recovered from the rubble at the World Trade Center site in October 2001. According to The National September 11 Memorial and Museum Foundation, the museum serves as the country’s principal instiution concerned with exploring the implications of the events of 9/11, documenting the impact of those events and exploring the continuing significance of September 11. The underground museum has many different artifacts from 9/11, including steel from the Twin Towers, fire trucks and debris. It houses 110,000 square feet of exhibition space and has multimedia displays, monumental collections, archives, and stories about the men, women and children who died during the attacks. The National September 11 Memorial and Museum archives the story of destruction that occured, but also represents the hope and camaraderie that the attacks spawned.

The World Trade Center spanned 16 acres and opened to the public on April 4, 1973. Including the two towers that fell, World Trade Center Building 7 and many other surrounding businesses were ultimately demolished. While 2,977 people perished in the 2001 attack, many find it miraculous that so many others were able to evacuate and escape death.

The Sachem Central School District is pleased to announce the appointment of Latisa Graham as the new director of guidance–college and career counseling following an extensive interview and screening process. Mrs. Graham, a Freeport resident, joins Sachem from the Hempstead Union Free School District where she served as a guidance counselor for 17 years at Hempstead High School.
During her time there, Mrs. Graham was selected as a member of the Intervention Support Team, where she assessed the response to intervention for all students and organized and reviewed behavior intervention plans to help students maintain academic progress. Additionally, Mrs. Graham organized and implemented character education modules into semester classes, organized college tours and visits from college
representatives to increase student knowledge of the college admission process and administered career planning, college placement and scholarship attainment. Prior to her accomplished career as a guidance counselor, Mrs. Graham worked as an English teacher in the Westinghouse Evening High School for two years and at Hempstead High School for four years. Among her abundant academic accolades, Mrs.
Graham earned a Bachelor of Arts degree in secondary English education from LIU Post, a Master of Science degree in education, an advanced certificate with a concentration in guidance counseling from the City University of New York Brooklyn College and an advanced certificate in education administration at The College of Saint Rose. “I see my role as one that has transformed drastically throughout the

ATTENTION BUSINESS OWNERS!
It is not very often that the American Legion Auxiliary Junior members are elected to a New York State Honorary office, but this year 2019-2020, Suffolk County had 2 members elected for office. Suffolk County Past 10th District Chairman and current Junior Chairman Erin Horn escorted 9 American Legion Auxiliary Juniors to Albany recently. Their mission was to attend, a New York State wide meeting of other Junior members and to help others. The forty girls that attended were from ages 8-17 years old. They planned and executed several volunteer activities to help veterans and their families during the conference. The girls brought boxes and bags full of items to donate to Guardian House, a local women’s veterans shelter in the area. Some of the items included clothing, gift cards, toiletries,
assorted greeting cards, linens, pocket books and so much more that were sorted and packed for delivery. The girls painted 200 large stones that had messages or art work on them that they shared with Seniors. Many took some home to leave in local areas like parks for others to find. The girls spent several days together,
painting pinky’s blue for the Dept presidents project, selling assorted candy to also use for other projects. In addition to the volunteer work, the girls held election of officers. Among those elected were two Suffolk County Junior members. Emily Sensabaugh, a senior in East Islip School District, represented
Babylon American Legion Auxiliary and was elected as New York State Honorary Historian. Emily Albert, attends Sachem Schools and represented RusyBohm American Legion Auxiliary in Islip. She was elected as New York State Honorary Secretary. Congratulation to both girls.

Four Perspectives Exhibit Four Perspectives is an exhibit at the BAFFA Art Gallery by a group of artists who came together to present different views of the world around us. Photographer, Francis O’Brien calls his photographs “painting with light”. Nicole Scoca is a mixed media artist. Her artwork is inspired by her fascination with all types of cattle. Alec
O’Brien focuses on the fluidity of consciousness. His media is either colored micron pens or Uni Posca paint pen markers. Photographer, Eileen Haritonides says that her life is “a kaleidoscope of color and experiences”. RESCUE RECEIVES $10,000 GRANT -Supervisor Ed Romaine has announced that Last Hope Animal Rescue has received a $10,000 grant from the Alex and Elisabeth Lewyt Charitable Trust (matched in part by Last Hope) to target the epidemic number of feral cats in the Town of Brookhaven this fall. Vouchers will be issued to residents caring for feral cats inhabiting the Town by completing the mandatory agreement on the organization’s website at www.lasthopeanimalrescue.org/fix-a-feral/. Cats will be spayed or neutered, vaccinated, and ear-tipped for free at four participating veterinarians. The program will cease on December 15. September is National Preparedness Month As Hurricane Dorian headed towards the US Coastline, we were all reminded on how important it is to take all of the precautionary measures to keep our families safe in the event of an emergency. From floods to high winds; power outages to house fires, emergencies can happen at any moment and residents must be prepared yearround. September is National Preparedness Month and BeReadyLI.org, a collaboration between United Way, PSEG Long Island and 2-1-1 Long Island, has worked to help tens of thousands of Long Islanders prepare before, during and after disasters by encouraging families to take simple steps that help ensure their safety – before emergency strikes. Long Island has experienced a variety of disasters throughout the years – the Pine Barrens Blaze, the Blizzard of ’96, Hurricane Irene and one of our area’s most devastating…Superstorm Sandy. The tragic aftermath of this historic storm highlighted the need for greater community guidance in the area of disaster preparedness. Long Island was the most populated area of New York in Sandy’s path, 95,534 homes were damaged –
and in some cases, totally lost. United Way’s 2-1-1 Long Island, a comprehensive resource database, bolsters local disaster efforts of organizations like the American Red Cross on Long Island, the Health and Welfare Council of Long Island and Island Harvest by helping to mobilize and assist disaster-affected families, as well as inform residents on how to help their neighbors by enlisting as a volunteer. Expanding on those services, BeReadyLI. org enhances access to Long Islanders with timely and accurate information to improve emergency readiness, as well as recovery resources including transportation updates, town and village contact information and government websites. “Long Island is subject to a host of weather conditions that could be cause for concern. While the region is most susceptible to hurricanes, heat waves and thunderstorms, families should also be prepared for emergencies such as house fires and power outages,” said Theresa A. Regnante, President and CEO of United Way of Long Island. “BeReadyLI has information for emergencies that families need in order to be prepared, including how
to create a family disaster plan and what to pack in an emergency supply kit.” “The safety of our customers and employees is PSEG Long Island’s top priority. After a comprehensive search process, Connetquot Central School District has welcomed Peter Melore as the district’s new director of health, physical education, athletics and recreation, effective this July. Mr. Melore comes to the Connetquot Central School District from the Three Village Central School District, where he served as the executive director of health, physical education, recreation and athletics for the past four years. Under his leadership, the district’s physical education and athletic program reached new successes, including state athletic championship titles, the introduction of advanced curricular programs and training initiatives to help staff further support student-athletes. Preparing New Teachers In preparation for the 2019-20 academic school year, the Connetquot Central School District recently hosted a comprehensive, three-day new teacher orientation for its newly hired staff members. Under the guidance of a multitude of staff members and administrators, the teachers received detailed information about the school district and participated in collaborative planning sessions after engaging
in a series of icebreaker activities. Working as a group, they discussed a variety of pedagogical strategies and developed the framework for engaging lesson plans which will be utilized throughout the upcoming school year. The workshops also provided them with the opportunity to become well-versed in the schools’ technological resources and learn more about the district’s policies and procedures.

The Twilight Wish Foundation is a 501(c)(3) non-profit organization whose mission is to honor and enrich the lives of seniors through intergenerational Twilight Wish celebrations. Since the Foundation’s founding in 2003, their goal has been to make the world a nicer place to age, one Twilight Wish at a time. When a Twilight Wish is granted, a senior is recognized for all that they have done throughout their lives and is shown that they are appreciated and valued. S o m e t i m e s a wish fulfills an immediate need, and sometimes it is a last wish or lifetime dream. Large or small, all wishes provide a meaningful “thank you” to the senior for a lifetime of service to others. Every wish they grant helps build a culture that values and respects our senior population. You can qualify for a Twilight Wish if you are at least 65 years old, are a legal U.S. citizen, demonstrate financial need, provide a history of giving back to others and possess the cognitive, emotional and physical ability to experience the wish. To date, the Twilight Wish Foundation has granted over 3,000 wishes throughout our country, ranging from simple needs wishes, such as shaving razors for nursing home veterans, to living life to the fullest wishes, such as going cross-country in a tractor-trailer truck. One of their wish recipient’s life was changed after he wished for a mobility scooter. He is from Scranton, PA and wanted this scooter so he can continue to assist others at an art center located across the street from his residence. Long Island’s Chapter Director James Ciervo and his colleague Joann Petrie drove to PA to pick up a very gently used scooter, updated it a bit and delivered
