The challenge requires the participant to have a bucket of ice water dumped on themselves, and then nominate several others to also take the challenge. Back To Reality By: Jamie Lynn Ryan Back to school. Back to schedules. Back to routines. Back from vacation. Back to reality. And so it begins. That slow, tedious transition into all things Autumn. That gradual acceptance of pumpkin spice and flowering mums and long sleeves and boots, and the reluctant closing of pools and packing away of bathing suits and flip flops. Say it ain’t so. Ah, but here it is. May as well embrace it. And while you’re sitting on a
park bench enjoying the cool crisp air (shameless plug alert), take a look at our new Autumn issue of Seasons Magazine for a refresher course on all that Long Island has to offer, no matter the time of year. From long walks on the beach and picnics in the park to weekends at the wineries and pumpkin patches; from family days at Oktoberfest celebrations and Fall Festivals to “me” time alone on the couch vegging out to the new fall TV season, there is literally something for everyone to enjoy.
Oh, and we can’t forget football. Sundays monopolized by the schedule of the home teams (or the Patriots, as the case may be), spent tailgating and snacking, rooting and yelling… Sunday Funday at its best. Having a schedule dictated by the hours of daylight has its downfalls; but it does make you want to savor those final glimpses of summer sunshine all the more. Take a walk, watch a sunset, sip a cup of tea on the patio. Maybe just grab a jacket on the way out.

arts and crafts, games, and watching movies. The cost of each weekend (Friday to Sunday) is $350. The camp requires a $50 deposit per session which is non-refundable unless registration is canceled 30

Green Honor Roll Stony Brook University has been named in Princeton Review’s 2015 Green Honor Roll, an annual list that offers a measure of how environmentally friendly universities are on a scoring scale of 60 to 99. Stony Brook, one of 24 universities to receive a score of 99 (the highest possible score), is among 861 colleges reviewed this year. Selection is based on data collected
in its 2013-14 surveys of schools concerning their sustainability-related practices, policies, and academic offerings. “Implementing green technologies, resources, and pollutiondecreasing programs is a commitment that Stony Brook University has made to its students, faculty, staff, and they to their campus and to the community at large,” said Stony Brook University

As a very fortunate person, I find it important to look out for those who are incapable of looking out for themselves. This does not mean acting like a superhero who swoops in to save the day. The main idea behind this article is not to convert people, but to serve as the kind of illustration that someone looking to live a full life must try to exemplify. It isn’t
always about ourselves. Sometimes, we have to put our wants and needs aside for the good of others. God wants us to help people. This call to serve my community, fellow humans and Mother Nature exemplify my idea of a life with a purpose. It is not always about our personal gains, but the good of our species. Making The Transition Incoming sixth-graders at James Wilson Young Middle School in the Bayport-Blue Point School District had the chance to try out their new lockers and personalize them with decorations on a special day of transition on August 27th. “It was great to see all of the incoming sixthgraders as they begin to build a home at the middle school,” said Principal Robert Haas. “The only
thing better than seeing the excitement on their faces as they explored their lockers and the school, was seeing how much the students helped one another. Gold Ribbon Display Supervisor Ed Romaine has announced that during the month of September, gold ribbons will be displayed on light poles and trees at Town Hall in recognition of National Children’s Cancer Awareness Month. Many other Long Island towns will participate in the display of gold ribbons, spearheaded by the Christina Renna Foundation.
On January 11th, 2007, Christina succumbed to Rhabdomyosarcoma, a rare soft tissue cancer, after a hard fought and courageous battle. Each year, 13,500 children are diagnosed with cancer and 1 in 5 will lose their battle. Supervisor Romaine said, “Far too many families are faced with the devastating loss of a child as a result of cancer. Christina’s battle reminds

Hearney, Administrator for Pupil Personnel Services Natalie Doyle, Assistant Superintendent for Finance and Operations Michael Cipriani and Athletic Director Tim Mullins, completed the challenge. Dr. Butera and fellow administrators also nominated 5 BBP Principals, 1 Board of Education trustee, NYSED Commissioner Dr. John King, Dr. Walter Schartner, the Sayville superintendent of schools, and Dr. Julie Lutz of ES BOCES. A donation was made to ALS research. ALS is personal to BBP, as Bill Hutchinson, an earth science teacher who began his career at BBP
during the 1960s, passed away from the disease in the 1990s. Hutchinson, known as “Hutch,” was a beloved wrestling and football coach and is credited with elevating the district’s wrestling program to elite status. He was memorialized by the creation of a scholarship, the Hutch Fund Grant, awarded annually by the Bayport-Blue Point Foundation. The video of the administration’s ice bucket challenge was shared at the close of Dr. Butera’s welcome back speech at Superintendent’s Conference Day and can be viewed on the district’s website and Twitter feed.
The Islip Town Board will remember the 13th anniversary of the tragic events of September 11th, 2001, during its annual remembrance ceremony to be held at the 9/11 monument, located at Veteran’s Memorial Park, just west of Islip Town Hall, on Thursday, September 11th, at 5 pm. The Islip Town Board will be joined by fellow elected officials, area fire departments, local clergymen, civic leaders, local veterans groups and residents to pay tribute to the men and women who lost their lives during the 9/11 terrorist attacks. The ceremony, led by Islip Town Supervisor Tom Croci, will begin

with the Lt. Michael Murphy Navy Sea Cadet Corps of West Sayville leading the color guard around Town Hall, with Town Board members and other officials following behind, followed by the Pledge of Allegiance. Supervisor Croci will be joined by Blaise Gemellaro, First Vice President of the Islip Town Fire Chiefs, in making opening remarks before Town Board members read the names of the 90 Islip Town residents who perished on that fateful day.
A presentation and laying of a wreath will be conducted by Councilwoman Trish Bergin Weichbrodt and Councilman Steve Flotteron, with musical accompaniment from the Suffolk County Police Emerald Society Pipe Band. A closing prayer will be offered by Rabbi Dr. Steven Moss of B’nai Israel Reform Temple of Oakdale. The ceremony will conclude with closing remarks by Supervisor Croci. Over the summer months, people around the world participated in the ALS Ice Bucket Challenge to bring awareness to the disease and donate toward finding a cure. The challenge requires the participant to have a bucket of ice water dumped on themselves, and then nominate several others to also take the challenge and donate. Educational Journey This August, students in the inaugural class of Long Island’s Pathways in Technology Early College High School (LI P-TECH) embarked on a diverse educational journey. On August 6th, 7th and 8th, P-TECH students got a fully immersive crash course in the revolutionary
technology of additive manufacturing, more commonly known as 3D printing. For three days, these students came together for an interactive 3D printing project at the Institute for Research and Technology Transfer at Farmingdale State College, SUNY.
During the threeday workshop, students collaborated to design and assemble a Printrbot 3D printer kit. Each student then used the kit to create his or her own 3D creation. This colorful, cutting edge lesson gave students personal experience with one of the most innovative
technologies the world has to offer. Students also had the opportunity to tour the Long Island Forum for Technology’s (LIFT) Composite Prototyping Center, a living laboratory dedicated to state-of-theart technology and the STEM disciplines. The leading edge-lesson
was bookended by backto-basics environmental activities at two Nassau BOCES sites. At the start of the academy, students came together at the Brookville Outdoor and Environmental Education Center for a series of teambuilding exercises designed to encourage trust,
collaboration, risk-taking, cooperation and problem solving. These skills were reinforced during a daylong wilderness adventure at Caumsett State Park that ended the academy with orienteering, canoeing and a survival exercise.
