She said that the Over 50 Fair is always “Overflowing with Opportunities for Age 50+,” although this year is a bit scaled down due to being virtual. Grandparents Day Is September 13
Grandparents and seniors can share wisdom and a lifetime of experience with the young people in their lives. Expressing gratitude for such lessons is a great way to show the seniors in your life, whether it’s a grandparent, mentor or family friend, how much they’re appreciated. Some seniors live alone, while others may be living with their adult children and grandchildren, offering care and support to help make the household function. Whether grandparents, aunts and uncles or older
friends live close by or elsewhere, there are many ways for their loved ones to show them how much they’re appreciated. Become pen pals. Seniors may have limited mobility or opportunities to get out of the house. Receiving mail is one way to connect with the outside world. Regularly send letters to a grandparent or other senior, sharing tales of daily life and key moments that will bring them joy. Chances are they’ll return the favor with a letter of their own. Explore technology
together. Younger generations can introduce seniors to available technology that can bring them closer. This may include digital assistants that enable them to share videos, tablets to send email or access social media, mobile phones for calling and texting, and anything else families can customize to their needs. Shop and run errands. Help aging loved ones perform the tasks that they may not be able to tackle on their own. This can include picking up groceries or prescriptions.
Did you know? Many people plan to retire by a certain age, but few may actually still be working at their targeted retirement age. In the United States, the age at which working Americans expect to retire has risen to 66. But a Gallup poll showed that most don’t stay on the job that long, instead retiring
when they’re about 60 or 61. In addition, according to a 2018 Employee Benefit Research Institute survey, 48 percent of workers wanted to retire after age 65, but only 19 percent of retirees stayed on the job that long. The reasons vary, but one positive outcome is
having enough money to live comfortably during retirement. Still, early retirement largely involves unexpected scenarios. These may include poor health, having to care for an aging parent, downsizing, new skills required for the job, or other work-related reasons.
Honor America on Patriot Day September 11, 2001, was a tragic day in American history. On that day, nearly 3,000 innocent lives were lost due to the terrorist attacks in New York City and Washington, D.C. as well as in rural Pennsylvania, where another plane en route for more destruction crashlanded. The indelible images of the World Trade Center collapsing in flames with crowds running for safety, as well as the ensuing visions of heroes and citizens working together, have created a lasting impression. While buildings have been repaired and new sites erected in the wake of the attacks, there are many ways to continue to honor the fallen. Patriot Day, which takes place each year on September 11 to honor those who lost their lives in the 9-11 attacks,
is one such example. The following are a handful of ways that people can honor 9-11 victims and their families. • Celebrate local heroes by visiting or making donations of food or supplies to local firehouses and police stations. • Commemorate the events of 9-11 by observing moments of silence at key times throughout the day: 8:46 a.m, 9:03 a.m., 9:37 a.m., 9:59 a.m., 10:03 a.m., and 10:28 a.m. • Engage in service projects that can help your community, including its underserved individuals, like veterans. National Day of Service, which is the same day as Patriot Day, asks people to do at least one good deed in honor of those who died on 9-11. • Make a trip to New York City and visit the National September 11 Memorial & Museum.
• If you display a flag at your home or business, be sure to place it at half staff from sunrise to sunset to mourn the lives lost. • Share stories of the heroism and bravery of first responders with young children who may not have been alive in 2001. • Unite the country by promoting acceptance of and kindness to all people, regardless of religious or political beliefs. • Visit memorials honoring the fallen in various communities in and around your home. This Patriot Day, there are many ways individuals can honor those who lost their lives on 9-11. Editor’s Note: The Patriot Day celebrated on September 11 is a separate holiday from Patriot’s Day, which is observed on the third Monday in April in Massachusetts.

Bellport High School’s theater art program is pleased to announce that student-thespian Jack Burkhardt was the recipient of a coveted 2020 Teeny Award for his supporting male role as Lumiere in the school’s musical “Beauty and the Beast.” The award was presented during a virtual awards ceremony, held by East End Arts on
July 23. “This is a terrific accomplishment,” art department Chairperson Barbara Gallagher said. “Jack is an extremely talented actor and the South Country Central School District congratulates him on this special achievement.” Each year, Bellport High School is one of 18 school theater programs
whose productions are celebrated by the East End Arts for student talent and excellence in acting, production, pit orchestra, stage management, lighting design and crew and more. This year, the theatre program received 36 nominations for its productions of “Beauty and the Beast” and “The Game’s Afoot.”

For Long Island, Inc.
The West Islip Breast Cancer Coalition for Long Island, Inc. (WIBCC) is a non-profit grassroots organization that was founded in 1992. They work to eradicate Breast Cancer and gynecological cancers. Their mission is to provide support services to women undergoing treatment and requiring postmastectomy care with their “Lead A Helping Hand” program, and to actively promote cancer and environmental awareness with education, advocacy and outreach throughout the community. They have stayed open throughout the pandemic and are truly here to serve our community. WIBCC serves ALL of Long Island, not just West Islip!

To accomplish their mission, they focus on pressing these goals: Prevention: Support, encouragement and education about a healthy lifestyle. Research: To promote legislation to increase funding for environmental research and provide funding for specific breast cancer projects. Education: Providing up-to-date information through their website, newsletter, information packets and education seminars. They offer adult and student awareness programs designed to help participants increase their awareness of Breast Cancer and gynecological cancers. Services: To offer breast and gynecological cancer patients services paid for and facilitated by WIBCC via the “Lend A Helping Hand” program. Lend A Helping Hand: The non-surgical modalities of treatment for breast cancer chemotherapy and radiation leave the patient in the need of a “Helping Hand”. Awareness: Breast Cancer is survivable.
Awareness of the treatments available is key to beating it.
As like many other nonprofit organizations, the WIBCC holds various fundraising events throughout the year to gain awareness and collect funds in support of their mission. This September they are part of Stop & Shop’s Community Bag Program. WIBCC will receive a $1 donation every time a $2.50 reusable Community Bag is purchased at 400 Union Blvd in West Islip, unless otherwise directed by the customer through the Giving Tag attached to the bag. Additionally, they are participating in John’s Crazy Socks Giving Back Program, which started September 1st and will run through October 31st. John’s Crazy Socks is a father-son social enterprise that was inspired by John Lee Cronin, a young man with Down Syndrome and his love of colorful and fun socks, or what he calls his “crazy socks”. John’s Crazy Socks has agreed to donate 10% of their net sales to WIBCC for every pair of socks purchased from their website, www.johnscrazysocks.com, when you enter the charity code FG-WIBCC20. Congressman Lee Zeldin (R, NY-1), an Army veteran who continues to serve as a Lieutenant Colonel in the Army Reserve, announced the United States Air Force has designated Long Island a high cost area, allowing active duty Air Force service members to receive child care tuition assistance from the Department of Defense (DOD) for use at approved local child care providers. Earlier this year, Congressman Zeldin’s office initiated an inquiry
with the Air Force through the Department of Defense to reassess its cost of living determination for New York’s First Congressional District, home of Gabreski Air National Guard Base. This review resulted in all of Long Island being designated as a high cost area, making active duty Air Force service members eligible for child care tuition assistance. “Long Island is one of the most beautiful places in America to call home, but it also boasts
one of the highest costs of living in the country,” said Congressman Zeldin. “Long Island’s active duty service members, especially those serving at Gabreski Air National Guard Base, put their lives on the line to protect us. They deserve access to each and every benefit they have earned, and ensuring they have this child care assistance will make living in the Long Island communities they serve a little easier.”
Sachem High School North Celebrates Class Of 2020 Seniors
The Sachem High School North Class of 2020 was recently honored during a collection of graduation ceremonies held July 2324 at Fred Fusaro Alumni Stadium. To ensure safety, strict guidelines were put in place, such as requiring masks when social distancing was not possible and seating individual families a minimum of six feet apart. The ceremonies began in traditional fashion, with “Pomp and Circumstance” playing over the stadium speakers before Principal Patti Trombetta took the stage. She began by acknowledging those students who would be serving in the armed forces, which was aptly followed with a recorded rendition
of “The Star-Spangled Banner” performed by the seniors-only symphonic choir. She then addressed the graduates-to-be with a congratulatory speech. “This has certainly been a very difficult school year,” Trombetta said. “Life is filled with highs and lows, valleys and peaks that will test your resilience, that will push you to overcome challenges. The
lessons you learn along the way to the top will only make you stronger and better.” Acknowledging the unique year they had come through, she added, “Never has a graduating class been called upon to step into the future with more purpose, vision, passion, energy and hope. I have all the faith in the world that you will not

In her address, she reflected on her time as a student at the high school and the
impact her teachers had on her. “Don’t forget about everyone you will leave behind as you head off to college,” she advised. “Don’t forget about your family, friends and teachers, and keep in touch with the people who have made a difference in your life; you never know what can happen.” Students then entered the stage to receive their diplomas, which were conferred by Sachem Board of Education
President Alex Piccirillo, in an alternating fashion to maintain social distancing. They also had the opportunity to commemorate the milestone moment with a photo. Closing out the commencement exercises, they were led in the traditional turning of the tassels before exiting the field, poised to enter the next chapter of their lives as Sachem High School North alumni.
