September’s Charity of the Month is:

Equity First Foundation

This nonprofit is guided by a board of experts from the Long Island business community. They strive to educate the community so people can make financial decisions with knowledge and confidence. The mantra of this foundation is “Learn today to choose wisely tomorrow!” This organization holds hands-on workshops, where participants will be given course material, handouts and goals to accomplish. Some people they help through these workshops are those in women’s shelters, homeless shelters, veteran homes, at-risk communities, drug rehabilitation centers, senior centers and more.

Equity First Foundation is available to provide educational presentations on an array of topics such as the importance of credit awareness, budgeting and mortgage modification. Businesses, civic groups, community centers and other groups can host seminars or workshops for their employees, members, the communityat-large, etc. If you are interested in scheduling a program, the opportunity is available! Looking to volunteer? Equity First Foundation is in need of volunteers to coordinate events and tradeshows, assist with office work, organize fundraisers and, lastly, to help with grant writing and research. Acknowledgements I have been putting this off for quite some time. This “final step,” if you will, penning my last column for South Bay. I told myself I would take my time with this one, write it well in advance of deadline, try to encapsulate everything in one epic, closing chapter. And yet, here I sit – 11:30 p.m. on the eve of my second to last day of work, staring at a mostly blank template as countless thoughts swirl in my brain. While my last three columns have been vignettes of one sort or another – from birthday beginnings and numeric significance, to desktop mementos and the memories associated with them, to a flashback of my origins within the pages of the old Lindy hometown weekly – this one, well, this one leaves me at a bit of a loss for words. My career, this portion of it, has been largely defined by my ability to transcribe a feeling on paper, to relate to readers from all walks of life by telling stories – of my life, of my surroundings and my observations of the people within them. Always, though, the idea was to find a common thread, a unifying theme. Change. It is the one constant. A perfect theme for this transitional transcript, don’t you think? Over the last several weeks, I have received countless letters from fans, family, friends – even a few detractors – most of whom were avid followers of my writing, all of whom wanted to take the opportunity to wish me well on the next phase of my journey. There were even a few phone calls from those

wishing to speak to me, to tell me how much of an impact I had made on their lives, how deeply a particular column had resonated.

Bellport Orients Incoming Students South Country Central School District’s incoming high school freshmen and incoming sixth-grade students jump-started their high school and middle school careers during Bellport High School and Bellport Middle School annual freshman and sixth-grade orientations, held on August 21st and August 27th, respectively. Principal Timothy Hogan reminded freshmen that they are responsible for their actions and academics moving forward. “You will have a better academic experience when you get involved with all [that] high school has to offer,” Mr. Hogan said. “Students who do well freshman year are successful throughout their high school career.” In addition to meeting administrators and faculty, the students learned about sports eligibility, guidance goals, and academic and behavioral expectations. At the middle school, seventhgrade student Chris Ford

spoke to the new students about the ways in which he overcame his anxiety with starting middle school by becoming involved. At each of the orientations, students paired up with student council representatives to take a tour of their respective buildings. Middle school students also had the opportunity to locate and open their lockers. Both the high school’s PTSA and the middle school’s PTA generously donated snacks to celebrate the students’ entrance into their new schools.

Lenny Kravitz Spreads Love Through Music By Allison Kugel Twenty-nine years after releasing his debut album, Lenny Kravitz is still letting love rule. The multi-Grammy award winning musician brings forth a conscious body of work with his latest album, Raise Vibration, out September 7th. Musically, Raise Vibration is an eclectic blend of the kind of stylistic rock n’ roll-funk sound that Kravitz is known for, with subtle nods to vintage R&B and choruses that sway towards pop appeal. His music puts you in a trance-like groove and defies all genre. Allison Kugel: You’ve said you were born to make music. Can you share your earliest memory where you became aware that music was going to be your life? Lenny Kravitz: For me the pivotal moment was going to see The Jackson 5, live at Madison Square Garden, when I was six years old. I was in the first grade. I had already been intently listening to their record. But I went to the show, and the next morning that was it! I was completely sold. I knew that’s what I wanted to do.

my favorite place to work; it’s my workshop. When I’m in the studio and I’ve got my equipment and all my instruments and everything is set up, that’s the magical place for me. It’s where I can flow. I jump around from instrument to instrument, and it’s wonderful.

It means having the desire to learn, to improve, and to face my faults and learn from them. I’m always looking to go higher. And taking as much ego out of myself as possible.

Allison Kugel: Do you record all of your instrumentals in addition to doing your vocals and producing?

Lenny Kravitz: I believe that God is my creator, our creator. Whether we realize it or not, I believe we are all created by the same God. I believe we are all one creation, we are all connected, and I believe that God is the ultimate source of love and all we are looking for.

Lenny Kravitz: Yes. I start on drums and then I go to a guitar, a bass, another guitar, keyboard, percussion… I keep layering as though I was painting, until my picture is complete. Allison Kugel: Your upcoming album is called Raise Vibration and the first single, It’s Enough, is a call-to-action anthem about political corruption and social and racial injustice. Was writing It’s Enough a form of therapy for you, and a way of turning hopelessness into empowerment?

Lenny Kravitz: The music that was made by these kids was not elementary; it wasn’t bubble gum, as they used to say back then about young artists. This was sophisticated, high-level music with the best musicians, the best producers, and [Michael] was one of the best singers who ever lived and who ever will live. It was a perfect storm for me, the way everything came together. On top of the music, the presentation and showmanship were top level and soulful, and these were people that I could identify with. They looked like me. I had the same hair… there were so many things that came together in my mind. Allison Kugel: It’s interesting to hear you say that. My son is half Jewish and half Jamaican, and he does the same thing. He tends to gravitate towards people he sees on television, in film, and with music, who have his skin tone and his hair. Lenny Kravitz: Yup! I have the same background, except I’m Jewish and Bahamian.

Lenny Kravitz: I react to the world. I actually recorded the song twice. I was trying to find the direction for the record. The way the song started, the first version of It’s Enough was a full-on guitar, bass, drum, punk rock song. It had an angry tone, because that felt like the proper reaction. And then I thought about it and ended up changing it and finding this groove, which is the polar opposite of how it started. I found that by being calm and centered, and by being quiet, it was more effective. It brought out a whole new feeling in the song, and I think it enables the listener to hear the lyrics even better.

Allison Kugel: When and where do you feel most creative and musical?

Allison Kugel: What does the title of your album, Raise Vibration, mean to you? And how do you raise your vibration? Do you meditate or pray?

Lenny Kravitz: It could be anywhere, but it’s [typically] in the studio. My studio is in the Bahamas. It’s

Lenny Kravitz: It means exactly that; waking up. I meditate, I pray, I try to be still, I try to be quiet… and listen.

Allison Kugel: I always say that when I enter a room, I never walk alone because I can feel the presence of God beside me; as well as my great grandparents, my grandparents, my parents, siblings and my son. I walk into a space with the energy of those who made me who I am. When you enter a space, who walks beside you? Lenny Kravitz: God is with me at all times which I am always aware of. And the energy of my mother, of my grandmother, of my grandfather. My daughter (actress, Zoe Kravitz), who is here with me on this earth, is always with me. Like you said, knowing that and knowing that spirit is far superior to anything here. The physical presence is wonderful, and something that we require and crave as human beings. We’re spiritual beings living a physical experience, but as you say, you recognize that you have these people with you and it just shows how strong spirit is and how strong energy is. My mother’s (the late actress, Roxie Roker) been gone for twenty plus years, and I can still feel her every day. Allison Kugel: Your music transcends genre. It’s a blend of rock, punk, blues, soul, pop; it’s everything. You can’t categorize it. I remember seeing a television clip of you from Oprah’s Master Class, where you tell the story of sitting in class as a young boy and you didn’t know which box to check off on a piece of paper asking you to identify your race. Everyone’s life has a spiritual theme. In your case it seems to be an ongoing theme where people want to put you in a box and label you, and you railing against that. Lenny Kravitz: People love a box (laughs)! They want to put you right in it, so they can easily define, for their own comfort, what you are. I’ve been fighting against that from day one in my life, and in my musical life. Going back to that time in school, I knew I was black, but I knew that wasn’t all I

was. I knew I was also Russian Jewish, and I knew that my great grandmother was full-blooded Cherokee Indian. My mother always taught me, “Yes, you’re black, but you’re just as much this and you’re just as much that. Don’t discount that.” If you’re mixed, like me and like your son, you don’t discount one of your parents. You’re just as much one as the other. But, what my mother did say to me when I was a child that I think was very smart, and I didn’t realize it until I got older, was, “Even though you’re mixed, society only wants to see you as black.” I didn’t understand that at age seven. Allison Kugel: Did you feel diminished by it at the age of seven? Lenny Kravitz: From what I recall, I remember thinking, “What does that mean?” Of course, as I grew and went through life, I understood what that meant. People aren’t going to see all the complexities and differences. People are going to see what they see, and that is the color of your skin. That was a very good lesson once it kicked in. I was like, “Okay, people don’t see everything for what it is.”

released, what will that day be like for you? Lenny Kravitz: When I’m finished with an album, I’m at that place where I let go and I’m excited that I’m finished. It’s always exciting getting a new project out. I hope the people who enjoy my music will get something beautiful from it and will relate to it. The main thing for me is that I expressed myself authentically to who I am, who I was at that moment in time, and that it represents me well. That to me is everything. That’s a success. Scholastic Literacy Leaders’ Institute Sachem High School East hosted the Scholastic Education Long Island Literacy Leaders’ Institute on August 15th, which provided 150 educators from numerous school districts across Long Island with a plethora of professional development opportunities. With more than 50 Sachem teachers in attendance,

Superintendent of Schools Dr. Kenneth Graham offered a warm welcome to all attendees before Elizabeth Oakes-Lani, an account executive from Scholastic, explained the agenda for the day’s enriching activities. As the 2018-2019 school year approaches, both Sachem High Schools East and North welcomed the incoming classes of 2022 with a morning of informative presentations and interactive activities aimed to familiarize new freshmen with building layout and academic opportunities as part of the newly implemented Freshman Academy. At Sachem High School North, following a day of hands-on workshops and team building group sessions, Sachem alumnus Chris Vaccaro welcomed the incoming freshmen as he highlighted opportunities available to students and notable alumni that thrived as

Sachem students. The freshmen were then introduced to members of the Peer Mentor Club, who will be providing assistance throughout the year. Peer Mentor Club members answered questions about the freshman experience and what to expect as they begin high school. Freshmen at Sachem High School East were welcomed by building administrators before being introduced to the Project Happiness initiative, which was implemented as a key component of the buildingâ€™s culture last year. Students were then led on guided tours to multiple key locations throughout the building that they will

visit during their time as high school students. Randomly assigned student groups then participated in six twentyfive minute workshops that further explored the main principles of Project Happiness, mindfulness and meditation techniques; how to easily access building information and what events and clubs are available to students. In addition to the annual freshman orientations, the new Freshman Academy experience serves as a hands-on, discussionbased introduction to each high school that engages students in activities with their peers.

New Teacher Orientation In preparation for the 2018-2019 academic school year, the Connetquot Central School District recently hosted a comprehensive, two-day New Teacher Orientation for its newly hired staff members. Under the guidance of Superintendent of Schools,

Dr. Lynda G. Adams, the teachers received detailed information about the school district and participated in collaborative planning sessions after engaging in a series of icebreaker activities. Working as a group, they discussed a variety of

pedagogical strategies and developed the framework for engaging lesson plans. The workshops also provided them with the opportunity to become well-versed in the schoolsâ€™ technological resources, and to learn more about the districtâ€™s policies and procedures.

Dance Connectionâ€™s Competition Team completed their season with a performance aboard Royal Caribbeanâ€™s Adventure of the Seas July 6th Bahamas sailing. The performance on July 12th, was open to all guest on board the ship, and attracted hundreds of attendees. The dancers ranged in age from 8 to 20 years old performed 40 minutes of Tap, Jazz, and Contemporary numbers. They received a standing ovation at the conclusion of their performance, and rave reviews from the Royal Caribbean entertainment cast members, the cruise director Clo, and several members of the audience: â€œOur 14 family members that saw you on adventures

Battle of the Books

The 22nd annual Suffolk County Battle of the Books took place on Saturday, August 11th and Monday August 13th at the Student Activities Center in Stony Brook University. This inter-library competition, with 41 libraries participating, focused on 8 young adult novels Book Scavenger by Jennifer Chambliss Bertman, Circus Mirandus by Cassie Beasley, The Detective’s Assistant by Kate Hannigan, Framed! By James Ponti, Fuzzy Mud by Louis Sachar, The Key to Extraordinary by Natalie Lloyd, The Real Boy by Anne Ursu and The Thief by Megan Whalen Turner. The Book Hunters, representing the Connetquot Public Library practiced week after week with remarkable results. For the first time in history, the Connetquot Public Library came in first place. The competition is separated into three backto-back 4-hour Regional Competitions and an Awards Night. With four separate rounds, each round covers two of the 8 books and each team is given 20 questions per round. Under the guidance of Teen Librarian Angela Breslin and Children’s Librarian Dina Oliveira, the team diligently prepared for the competition, with former team members also serving as mentors. The road to victory began on the morning of

August 11th as the team finished in first place with a score of 67/80. On Monday evening The Book Hunters competed in the finals to win. The Connetquot team also won the Team Spirit Award. The competition fosters a love of reading, the opportunity to be part of a team, and sportsmanship. As teens navigate their academic, social, and community activities, the library creates fun and challenging opportunities for engagement. We thank them for their commitment and dedication. Volunteers who value clean waterways are encouraged to register with Keep Islip Clean for the International Coastal Cleanup. For over thirty years, citizens concerned about the marine environment collect data in September for the Ocean Conservancy. KIC is a sponsor of this worldwide initiative in Islip Township.

Litter is tallied on data sheets during cleanups, which will be combined with information from other locations to determine global pollution trends. KIC will provide all instruction and supplies. Beach locations are often chosen first, so volunteers are asked to consider picking creeks, streams, ponds and wetlands.

In front of a standingroom-only crowd, John Pillar, PGA Director of Golf Operations at Woodloch Springs, announced the birth of a new destination partnership bringing closer together Woodloch Resort, an award-winning family resort in the Pocono Mountains, and Folds of Honor, a nonprofit organization which provides educational scholarships to families of military men and women who have fallen or been disabled while on active duty. Woodloch’s 6th annual Folds of Honor Golf Classic culminated in a celebration of more than 200 attendees eager to rejoice in the fact that over $50,000 was raised for this year’s event, creating scholarships and changing the lives of 10 families. “We want to serve as a reprieve, as temporary as it may be, for families who have given the ultimate

sacrifice by allowing them a little relaxation or just a distraction. Woodloch fosters an environment for families to reconnect and have a lot of fun doing so,” remarked Pillar. “This is why Woodloch and Folds of Honor are a perfect team. The core purpose of both is to bring families closer together.” As the destination partner for Folds of Honor, Woodloch Resort will host its inaugural military appreciation weekend, November 2nd through November 4th, 2018, which will cap off with a fundraiser cocktail party and dinner that Sunday evening.
