and respects our senior population. Twilight Wish recipients report that having their wish granted impacted their life for the better. Their mental and physical health often improved, positively changing their outlook on life! The wishes that this organization grants truly changes the way that our society views aging, as it witnesses seniors living life to the fullest. By sharing their recipients’ stories, they inspire both older and younger generations and help bring about a cultural shift in how aging is perceived in our society. To date, the Twilight Wish Foundation has granted over 3,000 wishes throughout our country, ranging from simple needs wishes, such as shaving razors for nursing home veterans, to living life to the fullest wishes, such as going cross country in a tractor trailer truck. This Foundation has expanded throughout America and they currently have 17 chapters. The Twilight Wish Foundation is a 501(c)(3) non-profit organization whose mission is to honor and enrich the lives of seniors through intergenerational Twilight W i s h celebrations. Senior citizens are the fastest growing population in the world. The number of Americans who are 65 and older is projected to more than double to over 98 million by 2060. In the United States today, 1 in 3 seniors older than 65 live alone and the number of seniors living alone only increases with age. Many of these seniors experience social isolation, which can lead to undesirable conditions. Granting a Twilight Wish can help change that! You can qualify for a Twilight Wish if you are at least 65 years old, are a legal U.S. citizen, demonstrate financial need, provide a history of giving back to others and possess the cognitive, emotional and physical ability to experience the wish. Since the organization’s founding in 2003, their goal has been to make the world a nicer place to age, one Twilight Wish at a time. When a Twilight Wish is granted, a senior is recognized for all that they have done throughout their lives and is shown that they are appreciated and valued. Sometimes a wish fulfills an immediate need, and sometimes it is a last wish or lifetime dream. New Assistant Principal
NEW ASSISTANT PRINCIPAL - Matthew Perlongo has been named the new assistant principal of Sachem High School East. Photo courtesy of the Sachem Central School District day building operations. In addition, Mr. Perlongo held the position of assistant principal at the Western Suffolk BOCES Regional Summer School and as the Summer STEM
Academy director at the Huntington Union Free School District, where he conducted observations of staff and coordinated special education accommodations for students. Mr. Perlongo holds a Bachelor of Arts degree in communications from University at Albany and a Master of Arts degree in secondary mathematics education from Adelphi University. He has completed the Educational Leadership Certificate Program at Stony Brook University. “Growing up and attending school in the Sachem community gave me a true understanding of what makes this such a special place,” Mr. Perlongo said. “I am honored to be given the chance to serve the district that provided me with such great experiences and opportunities.”
School Welcomes New Principal Following the completion of a competitive screening process, Andrew Larson, a longtime employee of the Sachem Central School District, has been named the new principal of Hiawatha Elementary School. For seven years, Mr. Larson worked as an elementary classroom teacher at Waverly Avenue Elementary School before serving as an assistant personnel administrator at the Sachem District Office for one year. As part of his expansive administrative experience, Mr. Larson was an assistant principal at Sachem High School North for one year and most recently was an assistant principal at Sachem High School East for five years, where he effectively

consistent system of student support. Mr. Larson holds a Bachelor of Science degree in child study from St. Joseph’s College and a Master of Science degree in education and educational administration and supervision from St. John’s University. In addition, he has two New York state certifications: a permanent certification in pre-K to grade 6 and a professional certification in school building leadership. “It is a tremendous honor to be a new member of the Hiawatha community,” Mr. Larson said. “I’m looking forward to meeting all of the great families who call Hiawatha their home.”

Following a rigorous screening process, the Sachem Central School District is proud to announce the appointment of Matthew Perlongo as the new assistant principal at Sachem High School East, filling the vacancy left by Andrew Larson, who has accepted a position as the principal of Hiawatha Elementary School. Mr. Perlongo, a Bayport resident, joins High School East after serving in numerous administrative capacities, most recently as the dean of students at the STEM Magnet School/ Woodhull Intermediate School in the Huntington Union Free School District. During his time there, Mr. Perlongo managed the discipline of more than 800 students, aided in the creation and monitoring of RTI plans and assisted the principal in day-to-

On the National Level there significant concern about the current statistics regarding the 22 Veterans a day throughout the country that commit suicide. The Veterans Administration has a hotline to aid Veterans in need of support and companionship when the need arises by calling 1-800-273-8255. This hotline is available 24 hours per day 7 days a week. With more than a quarter of a million members AMVETS is the only Veterans Service
Organization open to all honorably discharged or currently serving Active, Reserved or National Guard Veterans of all ranks, grades and service branches regardless of whether they served in war or peace. The AMVETS Family also includes Sons of AMVETS, Ladies Auxiliary, AMVETS Riders and Junior AMVETS. Each year AMVETS files about 64,000 claims on behalf of Veterans and surviving family members. AMVET Volunteers have logged over 158,000 hours at VA Facilities Nationwide during the 2015 year and AMVETS has raised more than $350,000 to replace the USS Arizona Memorial Wall and is currently working diligently to help build the Gulf Storm War Memorial which will be located at the end of Constitution Avenue at the National Wall in Washington, DC.

On July 21 AMVETS Post 48 celebrated its’ 21st Year as a Post as well as the 72nd Anniversary of its’ Congressional Charter to assist Veterans in all aspects of their lives. President Harry Truman signed PL-216 on July 23, 1947 which gave AMVETS its’ Charter. Suffolk County which is largely comprised by the Town of Brookhaven consists of nearly 80,000 Veterans. AMVETS Posts 48, 55, 111, 1998 and 1174 are located within the Town of Brookhaven and have been supportive of Veterans being serviced by the Stony Brook State Veterans Home and the Northport Veterans Medical Center. Furthermore, many AMVETS, Sons, Ladies Auxiliary and AMVETS Riders from the above mentioned posts have assisted the Northport VA run a Stand Down for Homeless Veterans twice during each calendar year. At the conclusion of a lengthy search and screening process, the Sachem Central School District is proud to announce the appointment of Timothy Rodgers as a new assistant principal at Samoset Middle School, filling the vacancy left by Thomas Desmond after he was appointed principal of Wenonah Elementary School. Mr. Rodgers, a Commack resident, joins Samoset from P.S./I.S. 178, where he served as the K-8 dean of students since 2017. He was responsible for the social-emotional development and the restorative discipline process of students and was instrumental in the development of a checkin and check-out progress
monitoring system for middle school classes. While serving as the dean of students, he also collaborated with teachers and administrators on a weekly basis, participating on many school teams, such as the child study team, school leadership team, building response team, school safety team and the school intervention team, and in the math department to promote STEM initiatives. Prior to his time as the dean of students, Mr. Rodgers was a health and physical education teacher at P.S./I.S. 178 for four years and a health and physical education teacher at P.S. 334 for four years prior to that. He holds a Bachelor of Science degree in
physical education with a certification in teaching and a master’s degree in health education with a certificate in teaching from the State University of New York at Cortland and an initial certificate in school building leadership from The College of Saint Rose. “I am excited to take on the role of assistant principal at Samoset Middle School, and I look forward to working with a collaborative staff, enthusiastic students and caring families,” Mr. Rodgers said. “I am honored to work with a dynamic administrative team, and I look forward to supporting all the wonderful programs and activities that Samoset Middle School has in place to enrich students’ academic experience.”
Battle Of The Books The 23rd Annual Suffolk County Battle of the Books took place on Saturday, August 10 and Monday August 12 at the Student Activities Center in Stony Brook University. This inter-library competition is for those entering grades 6-9 and focuses on 8 young adult novels. The battle promotes a love of reading, individual and team building skills, and the opportunity to have fun while competing with peers. The Connetquot Public Library teens, under their team name, Clown Protection, participated in this event. After last year’s first place finish, the team was excited for another challenge. The
competition is divided into three back-to back 4-hour Regional Competitions and Finals Night. At the regional competition, each team participates in 4 separate rounds. Each round covers 2 of the 8 books and each team is given 20 questions per round. This year’s novels were Side Tracked by Diana Harmon Asher, Circus Mirandus by Cassie Beasley, Greeting from Witness Protection by Jake Burt, Winterhouse by Ben Guterson, Found by Margaret Peterson Haddix, Vanished by James Ponti, Stargirl by Jerry Spinelli, and Save Me a Seat by Gita Varadarajan and Sarah Weeks.
Teen Librarian Angela Breslin and Children’s Librarian Dina Oliveira conducted a number of practice sessions, coaching and encouraging team members. All of their efforts paid off with a first place finish in Saturday’s evening session with an overall score of 72/80. On Monday evening, the team once again, through their commitment and diligence, won first place in the finals. The team received a plaque which will be on display and also enjoyed a celebration at the library to commemorate their success. The library is extremely proud of their hard work and accomplishments.

Town Honors Local Hero An off-duty security guard was hailed at the Town of Islip August Town Board meeting, for helping police apprehend a suspect who allegedly robbed a local 7-11 recently. Gary Stack, of Holbrook, was sitting in his car in the parking lot of a nearby 7-11 after picking up a cup of coffee
inside the store around 6 am, when he saw a man run out of the store. Seconds later, a 7-11 employee burst through the doors yelling for help, that the store had just been robbed. Stack, a private security officer, followed the suspect who was running on foot to his getaway car. He chased the car while using his
hand’s FREE device to call the police. It wasn’t too long before the driver of the getaway car stopped, exited with his hands up. Cupcake Wars Cupcakes are a baked good designed to capture the imagination – from daring toppings to artfully piped frosting, these pintsized pastries are always a hit. During Eastern Suffolk BOCES Summer Career Exploration, students were asked to create their most whimsical cupcake for a Cupcake Wars competition. ESBOCES Summer Career Exploration is for students in grades 8-10 who may consider pursuing Career and Technical Education. Classes are offered in a variety of subjects including Welding, Engineering, Animal Care, Culinary Arts, Cosmetology, and Automotive Technology classes. The program has CUPCAKE WARS - During Eastern Suffolk BOCES Summer Career Exploration, students were asked to create their most whimsical cupcake for a Cupcake Wars competition. The students had to think on their feet to solve problems in the kitchen when changing tried and true recipes. One group, who created chocolate chip cookie dough-flavored buttercream, found that the chocolate chips were blocking their piping bag. They opted for a wide-mouthed style of piping that had a more cloud-like appearance.

three locations in Bellport, Oakdale, and Riverhead. The Cupcake Wars competition was based on the Food Network show. Students created one or two cupcakes and presented them to a panel of judges. The judges critiqued the cupcakes on appearance, creativity, and taste. Students used a variety of skills to create their cupcakes – such as creating roses out of Starburst candies, or filling them with molten chocolate and toasted marshmallows. “This is a way we can show the students how they can be creative and have fun in the kitchen,” said Eric Ceretti, culinary
teacher at Islip Academic Center. “They’re learning how to take a basic cupcake recipe and adapt it to different flavors and how to use different ingredients in a batter or frosting. Sometimes when you incorporate a new ingredient, it changes the whole character of the dish, which means you have to improvise to make it work.” The first place winner was a s’mores cupcake that had a molten chocolate center and toasted marshmallows instead of frosting. Second place was an Oreo-themed cupcake, and third was a chocolate chip cookie dough- flavored cupcake.
Street Dedication On Saturday, August 17, Supervisor Ed Romaine and Councilman Michael Loguercio officially dedicated a portion of Martha Avenue in East Patchogue as “Mark W. Gajewski Way.” Mr. Gajewski, a professional welder, was a first responder on 9/11 who selflessly spent 9 months cleaning up at “Ground Zero.” He lost his battle with 9/11-related lung cancer on December 11, 2017. Mr. Gajewski, also known
as “Ski,” was heralded as a man who spent a lifetime helping others in need. In 2005, he drove his truck to New Orleans to help in the aftermath of Hurricane Katrina. Supervisor Romaine said, “It’s important that we honor those who exemplify the true spirit of community. Mark Gajewski was an ordinary man who performed extraordinary acts and sacrificed his own life to help others. His family should take pride in
knowing how much we all appreciate his courage to do the right thing.” Councilman Loguercio said, “I was proud to stand among Mark’s family and friends to celebrate his life. We will never forget his courage and determination to make a difference in the lives of so many people. I am thankful for the opportunity to honor his memory and share this day with so many great people.”
