he Connetquot Public Library participated in the Suffolk County Battle of the Books, held at the Javits Lecture Center at Stony Brook University. This year’s team, the Mixed-Up Muggles, answered questions based upon eight young adult novels. The battle, an interlibrary competition between teams composed of teens entering grades 6-9 in the fall, has teens answer 20 questions per round, covering two of the eight books, with four rounds.

Classroom Tech Trends to Watch Technology continues to evolve. With computers, tablets and smartphones, people of all ages are immersed in technology. According to the Pew Research Center, 56 percent of teens between the ages of 13 and 17 go online several times a day. Teens are not just relying on technology at home or while on the go, but they’re also doing so in school. Schools are now recognizing how influential mobile technologies are on students and how they can shape teaching and thinking. As a result, technology is now a major component in the

Teachers can present lessons through the display, and students interact with the board to answer questions. Technology use in the classroom continues to grow as students and educators grow more accustomed to using technology in all aspects of life.

The benefits of music education extend far beyond getting kids to tap their toes. The National Association for Music Education lists the following benefits among the many reasons to support music education in schools:

That is likely connected to the motor skills children develop when playing musical instruments. Without those instruments, those motor skills may not develop as strongly.

It’s that time of year again, that period of transition between seasons that seems to sneak up on us so quickly, yet stretch so luxuriously over the month of September, giving us the best of both worlds; the last lingering rays of summer sunshine mixed with the brisk chill of autumn air, ushering in pumpkin harvests and apple picking and all the holiday seasons which follow. What better time of year to appreciate all that nature has to offer, to savor the sunsets while looking ahead to the foliage, to dip your toes in the ocean one

last time while unpacking the fall wardrobe – and maybe shop for a few new accessories. It is a time for new beginnings, and for endings; for the start of the school year and the final days of summer leisure. Sure, every seasonal transition has its own benefits; but there is something about September… something uniquely magical about the twilight of summer and the golden glow of autumn that exceeds them all. This is why it’s so important to slow down and appreciate each day, each stage of metamorphosis, as they each bring their own special respective nuances.

So, enjoy these next three weeks, summer’s swan song; and look ahead to the autumnal equinox with equal anticipation. Each sunbeam, each fallen leaf… they each hold their own special significance. It is up to us to recognize these special gifts, and to hold onto them as the annual winter chill approaches, along with the chaos of the holiday season. This is the calm before the storms, the interlude of tranquility. Hope all my readers have had an enjoyable summer. Here’s to making more happy memories in the month to come…

Suffolk County Legislator Tom Muratore and Brookhaven Town Councilman Kevin LaValle recently co-sponsored the second USA Track and Field-sanctioned Run The Farm 4 Mile Challenge marathon. This event supported Bethel Hobbs Farm, a local volunteer community farm that provides fresh, wholesome

produce to those in need. Over 200 participants ran the four mile course, which consisted of both flat and hilly terrain surrounding the Centereach farm. The run was followed by an award ceremony, musical entertainment, and raffle drawings on the farm grounds. “The Second Annual Run the Farm was a

great community event. Families gathered to cheer the runners on and enjoyed the festivities of the day,” stated Legislator Muratore. “Bethel Hobbs Farm is a great resource for the Centereach area, and it was an extreme pleasure partnering with Councilman LaValle to support them.”

On Saturday, August 13th, the Connetquot Public Library participated in the Suffolk County Battle of the Books held at the Javits Lecture Center in Stony Brook University. This year’s team, the MixedUp Muggles, answered questions based upon eight young adult novels. This year’s choices were: “Alex Rider: Stormbreaker” by Anthony Horowitz, “From the Mixed-Up Files of Mrs. Basil E. Frankweiler” by E.L Konigsburg, “The Face on the Milk Carton,” by Caroline B. Cooney, “Harry Potter and the Sorcerer’s Stone” by J. K. Rowling,” “Hope was Here” by Joan

Bauer, “Escape From Mr. Lemoncello’s Library” by Chris Grabenstein, “What We Found in the Sofa and How it Changes the World” by Henry Clark and Space Case by Stuart Gibbs. The battle, an interlibrary competition between teams composed of teens entering grades 6-9 in the fall, has teens answer 20 questions per round covering two of the eight books, with four rounds. This competition helps to foster a love of reading, teamwork and a sense of accomplishment. Coach and teen librarian Angela Breslin, with assistant coach and librarian Dina Oliveira, led

the Mixed-Up Muggles to a fourth-place tie in their round, and a tie for ninth out of 42 teams overall. They also won the peervoted Team Choice and judge-voted Team Spirit Awards. Building Project Recognized Longwood Public Library was selected by the New York Library Association’s Public Libraries Section (PLS) to receive a 2016 Building Award. The focus of the award is the impact that a renovation project has had on the library’s ability to provide services to its community. Emphasis is placed on projects that demonstrate cost effective solutions to space challenges as well as innovative usage of space and floor plans. “The PLS Board is impressed with Longwood Public Library’s commitment to ensuring that their new facility met

the needs of their residents. They did an amazing job communicating with their district, despite the lack of a local press,” said PLS Vice President, Becky Maguire. Longwood Public Library engaged the community in the planning process through a series of charrettes in the summer of 2010. Goals of the project included adequate space, natural daylighting, outdoor space, and energy efficiency. The library re-opened the facility on Friday, October 9, 2015, after a two-year expansion and renovation project. “We are thrilled to receive this recognition for

our community-focused library transformation,” said Library Director Suzanne Johnson. The New York Library Association’s Public Libraries Section represents the interests and concerns of the public libraries of New York State. P L S endeavors to provide continuing education and leadership opportunities that promote and enhance library services. In addition, PLS acts as an advocate for public and political awareness striving towards adequate funding and support.

Leadership Experience Long Island University (LIU) and Virtual Enterprises International (VEI) welcomed future business leaders from across the nation and their mentors to the LIU Post campus this summer for intensive business skill development through the weeklong “Entrepreneurial Leadership Experience.” Entrepreneurial Leadership Experience students were assigned to teams and given five days to develop and launch their own virtual businesses. The teams collaborated on their business ideas in LIU Post’s on-campus startup incubator, advised by faculty from LIU’s AACSB-accredited College of Management, now in its 14th year as one of the Princeton Review’s “Best Business Schools.” At the conclusion of the program, the students pitched their businesses to a mix of reallife entrepreneurs and LIU Post faculty in the “Fueled Concepts” competition, modeled on the hit show Shark Tank. “This week taught me about how to work under pressure in a short period of time,” said Hayla Hurt of Creedmoor, N.C. “The space here in the incubator motivated me to get a lot of work done.” As they prepared to make their presentations, the students also engaged in a series of smaller competitions and participated in workshops designed to hone specific business skills, including networking, public

speaking, and commercial production. “I feel like I took something away from each speaker and learned from the program as a whole,” said Rickey Alford of East Windsor, N.J. “I learned how to work better as part of a team, and that’s something that I needed.” VEI students also toured the New York City offices of Microsoft, explored the Bloomberg terminals of LIU Post’s on-campus trading floor, and learned about the work that LIU Post students are doing for corporate clients as part of LIU-iQ Consulting, the University’s fee-based student-led consultancy. “VEI is a special program because for high school students it often provides their first glimpse, albeit virtually, at how a company operates and what it needs to succeed,” said Ray Pullaro, assistant dean of the College of Management, who served as a judge for the final competition. “LIU Post allows these students to expand that initial understanding into realworld experience through our engaged learning programs such as LIU-iQ Consulting, our studentrun businesses, and our participation in Start-Up NY.” While their students were developing their pitches and learning about the engaged learning opportunities available at LIU Post, VEI teachers from more than 120 schools in 10 U.S. states and Bermuda were engaged

in a robust exchange of business education ideas on the campus at the Virtual Enterprises International National Teachers Conference. The conference featured four days of collaborative professional development, including workshops, presentations, and special events led by VEI staff, facilitators from across the country, alumni, and business partners. The conference also featured a Teacher-Business Partner Networking Event at WeWork Times Square, part of a full day of special events hosted by LIU Brooklyn. “LIU and VEI share a belief that the best way to learn to run a business is by running a business,” said Dr. Kimberly R.
