It all began back in elementary school; earlier, even. The clipping in the local South Bay Newspaper heralding the entrance of the Class of 2000...into kindergarten. I was a part of that storied graduating class, and as we progressed through the next dozen or so years of schooling, the various accolades of my fellow Lindy alums would be documented within the pages of our neighborhood paper. My own graduation announcement was featured there, as I moved on from the halls of Lindy High and began my studies in journalism on the opposite shore at the C.W. Post campus of Long Island University. Four years later, it was time to take a stab at a career in the real world and, upon the encouragement of my mom, I sent a random query to the newly minted South Bay’s Neighbor, thinking it might be an ideal place to gain my footing in the field. As luck would have it, the paper was in the process of a major overhaul, transitioning from its rather antiquated black and white format and beginning the arduous task

of streamlining what had been, to that point, an extremely laborintensive, manual ordeal week after week. I entered the picture as an editorial assistant, designated as the one to cull through the incoming e-mails and process the local community news submitted by readers. Photos, press releases, upcoming events whatever seemed newsworthy was prepared, along with a selection of handwritten articles penned by our original editor, Lillian Nolin, still a fixture at the old Lindenhurst office. As I worked from my desk in Farmingdale, monitoring the weekly content, I was fortunate to be surrounded by a staff that took me under its collective wing, teaching me the ins and outs of editing, formatting and even a little graphic design. Fast forward three or so years, and the 11 original editions had morphed into 43. Lillian had retired, leaving me as the “veteran” editor, now responsible for penning my own weekly column, serving as a “roving reporter” of sorts covering select community events, taking photographs, and coming up with my own concepts for new features.

At all of 25 years-old, I was entrusted with the responsibility of driving this product to the next level editorially - and I loved every second of it. Over the next decade {wow, a whole decade}, the structure of South Bay’s Neighbor progressed and transformed, as did the staff, the content and the design. In the winter of 2014, we added a magazine to the mix, introducing Seasons, our high-end glossy feature, publishing five times a year. Always evolving, this was yet another opportunity to be a part of a product from the ground up, and to showcase our creativity in a new format for an even wider audience. What began as a first step into the field of journalism turned into a large portion of my career, a solid foundation from which to build upon and grow. I have often said that, although my 13-year tenure here has been, technically, one job, it has felt like several all rolled into one. In many ways, the evolution has come full circle - from the local clipping back in 1987, to now, as I pen my second-to-last column for the old hometown South Bay...a Lindy girl at heart, always.

Activities for children include our famous crab races, boat rides (children must be accompanied by an adult), interactive pirate shows, pony rides, magic shows, and much more! All activities are free; however, there is an $8.00 vehicle use fee in effect from 7:00 a.m. to 6:00 p.m. This event is sponsored by the Natural Heritage Trust and the Long Island State Park Region. The Sachem Central School District is proud to announce the appointment of Joseph Cervone as the new school transportation

Prior to his current position at BOCES, Mr. Cervone served as the site and fleet supervisor for Montauk Bus, where he managed three yards and an expansive fleet of 400 buses in the New York metropolitan area. Throughout his career Mr. Cervone has displayed a vast knowledge of school bus safety, 19A driver requirements, regulatory compliance, vehicle maintenance, efficient routing and the ability to manage the requirements of special-needs students. To ensure a smooth transition this summer, Mr. Shadbolt will assist Mr. Cervone on a parttime basis as he becomes familiar with the inner workings of the Sachem Transportation Department. “Following our extensive screening process led by a committee composed of numerous district office administrators, [we found that] Mr. Cervone possessed the safety expertise, transportation experience and the leadership ability that made him the ideal candidate for this supervisory position,” Superintendent of Schools Dr. Kenneth Graham said. “It is an honor to welcome Mr. Cervone to the Sachem family.”

Town Supervisor Angie Carpenter and the Islip Town Board recently joined at August’s Town Board meeting in celebration of Islip athletes who achieved success in the Special Olympics. Among the honorees were the East Islip Special Olympics team who on May 19th, and after months of preparation and training, exhibited determination despite heavy rains, bringing home a total of 24 medals. The team of six middle schoolers ((Riley Carrillo, Madeline Director, Jake Kozak, Janissa Lloyd, Julia Modico and Michael

Pacheco-Uvidia) and nine high schoolers (Delany Conlon, Danny DiOrio, Robert Phillips, Jake Pippatone, Michael Quagliara, Sara Spruyt and Kelly Stupplebeen) along with coaches Laura O’Donnell and Julie Susskind, earned 11 gold, 11 silver and two bronze medals. Supervisor Carpenter and the Islip Town Board also congratulated powerlifter and multiple gold medal winner, Angel Athenas, who in May broke the powerlifting record at the 2018 National Special Olympics in Old Bethpage. Angel’s success

and athletic skill secured her a position in the World Championship Special Olympic Games, to be held in March of 2019 in Dubai. “On behalf of the Town Board, I would like to congratulate all of these young athletes, who have achieved incredible triumphs through hard work, determination and perseverance,” said Islip Town Supervisor Angie Carpenter. The Supervisor presented the athletes with Certificates of Recognition on behalf of the Islip Town Board, applauding their dedication, skill and ongoing spirit.

Marching Band Camp The Connetquot High School marching band recently concluded their annual summer camp on August 10th after spending a week mastering a series of visually stunning and well-rehearsed routines. The camp is designed to help young marching band performers expand their skillsets, as drum majors, color guard members and marching band instrumentalists learned from outstanding

performers and teachers alike during the weeklong program. “This year’s summer program consisted of 200 campers spanning grades 9-12 and included veterans of this year’s award-winning group along with district teachers and mentors,” said marching band director Greg Johnson. “The students have worked very hard all week and the student-leaders have been outstanding.”

This year’s performance schedule includes invitations to the Columbus Day Parade in Manhattan, the Newsday Marching Band Festival at Hofstra University and the QVC Christmas Parade in Westchester, Pennsylvania. The Connetquot High School marching band and color guard perform at all home football games as well as the annual Homecoming football game.
