Proceeds from their Ultimate Spring Breakfast Buffet and Chinese Auction (Pancake Breakfast) allowed the Club to send five kids to camp for a week in August. We rush everything, much like our days, our weeks, our lives…and for what? To start complaining about the chilly weather and the inevitable snowstorms looming? As long as I can get away with wearing flip-flops, and running outside with no jacket on, you can bet I will. Longer days mean more time to do things too, instead of rushing home from work to hibernate on the couch in front of the TV. Although, I must say, I am looking forward to my shows returning for the Fall season. That said, the one regret I have about summer

“ending” is that all the catching up I was planning to do on various series and books, well, it just didn’t happen for one reason or another. Oh well. That’s what rainy days are for, I suppose. That and – dare I say it – any upcoming snow days?? In the meantime, try to enjoy this “last” week of summer – and maybe even the next few weekends as well. Water is the best way to stay hydrated. Reach for water instead of sugar-sweetened beverages like soda and sports drinks, which add extra calories with little nutritional value. Plain water too boring? Try sparkling water or add fruit wedges to jazz it up. 4. Put down the double bacon cheeseburger. It sounds like a delicious option after that allnighter you pulled, but your heart won’t be happy with you. Instead, reach for a grilled turkey burger piled high with veggies like avocado, tomato, onions and lettuce. In other words, choose lean cuts of meat and poultry without skin and extra fat removed. Opt for grilled, baked, broiled, poached or roasted (we promise, it’ll still taste delish!) 5. Something sounds fishy! We’re talking about that deep-fried, breaded basket that you took in the cafeteria line. Instead, try baked, broiled or grilled fish (especially the oil kind, like salmon or trout)

twice a week. 6. Slow down there, slugger. Let’s just say, drink in moderation. Alcohol contains a lot of empty calories and can have other negative effects on your health. In between classes and studying, it’s sometimes hard to find healthy options. So when you need a bite, stuff your face with fresh fruits and veggies, unsalted nuts and seeds, and low-fat whole-grain crackers. 8. Strike a (yoga) pose. Put down the cupcake and fight your stress without food. If you’re feeling overwhelmed, try yoga, take a walk, go to the gym or call friends or family. Remember, you’re allowed to take breaks from studying in order to recharge. 9. We like to move it, move it. Cue the dance music, lace up those running shoes or grab a Frisbee. No matter how you like to move it (move it!), maintaining weight is about burning the same amount of calories as you consume. Developing a regular exercise routine (at least 30 minutes a day, 5 days a week) is the best way to burn additional calories and manage stress. 10. Take your phone out. No, not to tweet. To check your portions. One of the easiest pitfalls for college students is allyou-can- eat cafeterias. Portion control can help you keep track of the foods you are consuming without going overboard. For instance, a serving of chicken breast (3 ounces) is about the size of a smart phone and a medium banana is about the size of a pencil. As part of an ongoing commitment to ensure the safety of water supply operations in all member districts, the Nassau Suffolk Water Commissioners’ Association (NSWCA) attended the recent Hurricane Seminar held at the Morrelly Homeland Security Center, Bethpage, NY. Deputy Commissioner Leonard B. Symons of the Town of Oyster Bay presided. The NSWCA was represented at the event by NSWCA Secretary Andrew Bader of Plainview Water District, and Commissioners Richard Niznik and Michael F. Rich III of Oyster Bay Water District. Focusing on effective planning for potentially catastrophic events like Superstorm Sandy and Hurricane Irene, the seminar, hosted by the Town of Oyster Bay, included representatives from the National Hurricane Center, NOAA (National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration), Nassau County, and PSEG. Of particular interest to the NSWCA were discussions regarding the improvement of forecasting and outreach, including partnerships with national, state and local emergency operation centers. “Long Island is vulnerable to storms because of its geography,” said Commissioner Niznik. “No one knows what Mother Nature will bring. The seminar information indicated that the hurricane prediction for 2014 is anywhere from eight to thirteen named storms. The relative severity of the respective storms is unknown.” “NOAA will soon have a new map on their website that will show predicted storm surge and water levels from the ground up,” Commissioner Bader

Town of Islip Supervisor Tom Croci and Receiver of Taxes Alexis Weik recently honored Shawn O’Sullivan of the Community Ambulance Company for his 29 years of dedicated service in the emergency medical field. The Community Ambulance Company dedicated their newest ambulance in honor of O’Sullivan at a recent ceremony held at the Loughlin Vineyards in Sayville. O’Sullivan joined the Community Ambulance Company in April of 1995. He currently serves

as a Paramedic, the highest level of care in the emergency medical services. He served as Captain in 1998 and 1999, and then climbed the ranks through the positions of Second Assistant Chief and First Assistant Chief before serving as Chief of Department in 2004. In 2005, O’Sullivan was elected as Administrative Secretary on the Board of Directors and was appointed as Treasurer later that year. He served as a Board of Director from 2007 to 2009 and then as President of

the Board of Directors in 2010. He currently serves as Administrative Secretary on the Board of Directors. He has been instrumental in securing grants for the Community Ambulance Company, funding various vital pieces of equipment and apparatus. He also serves as the Director of Youth Squad, which has grown to more than 40 members under his leadership. He helps to instruct children from ages 14 to 18 in the skills necessary to handle medical emergencies.

On Thursday August 14th, Legislature John Kennedy attended the Holiday Inn Check Presentation for Stony Brook Children’s Hospital. $20,000 was donated to the hospital’s building fund. The new Stony Brook Children’s Hospital will be completed in 2016; it will be housed in a new

10-level Hospital Pavilion adjacent to Stony Brook University Hospital The expansion will feature a pediatric intensive care unit, adolescent unit, procedure suite, hematology/oncology unit, medical/surgical units and modern patient and family amenities; new adult critical care and cardiac

care units; an expanded imaging department; and increased support space throughout. The Hospital has a building fund goal of $25,000,000; so far, a total of $9,980,670 has been donated to the building fund.

Suffolk County Executive Steve Bellone took the ice bucket challenge Sunday, August 17th, to support the ALS Association. He was nominated to join the fundraising effort by Town of Islip Supervisor Tom Croci. Red Cross Kits Provided One of the Kiwanis Club of Sayville’s initiatives is to send kids to Kamp Kiwanis each year. Proceeds from their Ultimate Spring Breakfast Buffet and Chinese Auction (Pancake Breakfast) allowed the Club to send five kids to camp for a week in August. Kamp Kiwanis is a coed camp that has the capacity of 130 campers per week and sits on 102 acres of

open and wooded land in the rolling western foothills of the Adirondack Mountains. Mike Siniski, the Club’s president, says “It is uplifting to hear the kids rave about their camp experiences, and the Club plans to continue working hard so that we can send as many kids as possible next year.” Kiwanis is a global

they all love – food. The students became lifelong learners and build their schema, organizational and interpretive skills, and self-help skills. Hands On Learning

Learning was fun for the children who attended the Eastern Suffolk BOCES Summer Enrichment Program at Academy Street Elementary School in the Bayport-Blue Point School District. Course options ranged from Dinosaurs, Legoland, Electronics, Cook up a Story, Woodworking, to Robotics and Fantasy Baseball. Children in grades 1-7 had the option of attending a full or half-day program. The morning session was comprised of enrichment programs and camp-like, recreational activities were offered in the afternoon for those children enrolled in the full-day program. Mike Luce, director of the program at Academy Street said, “There was something for every child. The enrichment courses were designed to be handson and technology based. The kids worked in groups, enhanced their creativity, made friends, and had fun. We also provided after-care

and extended child care hours.” The children also had opportunities to go on field trips to Citifield, the Vanderbilt Planetarium, and Fire Island. The words fun, hands-on, interesting, engaging, creative, and educational sum it all up. The Legoland course, taught by Michael Buscemi, is an excellent example of students learning, competing, and having fun. He said, “Legos allow students to work with patterns and use their creativity to develop projects. Over the threeweek session, students had the opportunity to apply scientific methods and procedures to build different robot features that helped move the Lego pieces.” Over in Electronics, students learned that electricity is a source of power and energy and they used electronic equipment to learn the difference between an alternate and direct current. “The

students in this course are in grades 5-8. They will be going into tech classes, so it’s important for them to have some background knowledge in electronics,” said Teacher Andrew Cangemi. “This course is a great balance between learning, keeping their minds sharp, and having fun.” Building a love for literacy took place in the Cook up a Story course with Mrs. Kochanskyj. “We created a careful balance between literature, reading stories they are familiar with, and stories they have never heard. Golf Outing Honorees Brookhaven Memorial Hospital Medical Center honored Sally Rose and Charlene Lehmann at the Tournament of Tournaments Golf Outing on August 14th at Island Hills Golf Club in Sayville. The weather cooperated by giving a perfect blue sky for 192 golfers. The fun continued into the evening, with over 250 guests in attendance, enjoying the sounds

of calypso music and delicious cuisine. Having the opportunity to dine on the deck, overlooking the golf course, made the perfect backdrop to compliment the end of a terrific day. Through the generous support of the community, over $298,000 dollars were raised for the Hospital. The funding will enable Brookhaven Hospital to continue moving forward

Honoring nurses who served in the military, the gathering of oral histories and displays of retrospective memorabilia are all part of Suffolk County Community College’s School of Nursing’s plans for a celebration beginning this fall and culminating with the school’s 50th pinning ceremony next May. The Suffolk County Community College School of Nursing boasts more than 7,100 alumni, is the largest program in New York State and the sixth largest in the nation. The School of Nursing is asking all alumni to contact the College to become part of a celebration leading up to the 50th pinning ceremony on May 15th, 2015. All those volunteering to help organize the event will be designated alumni ambassadors and deputized to help spread the word about the anniversary and its significance. “We are very proud to graduate nursing professionals who have worked in our communities

Developmental Disabilities Institute (DDI), the leading service provider for children and adults with autism on Long Island, and its Starting Early Program were the beneficiaries of some much needed help from a group of 10 volunteers courtesy of Goldman Sachs. On July 11th, volunteers spent the day greatly improving the aesthetics and creating an attractive gateway into the new “Busy Town” playground. Rob Martin, a Goldman Sachs employee and parent of a child enrolled in the Starting Early Program, helped organize the beautification program as a “Community Team Works

Project.” “Our group from Goldman Sachs was delighted to assist in this effort on behalf of DDI,” commented Martin. “It was the source of tremendous fulfillment for each of us when we saw the finished product and more importantly, the students playing in this beautiful environment.” The work was completed at DDI’s Little Plains campus, which serves approximately 300 children with autism and other developmental disabilities. From infant to fiveyears old, DDI’s Starting Early Program provides superior educational and therapeutic services for children who present with

developmental delays. DDI graduates over 92% to their home school district kindergarten programs. Goldman Sachs volunteers spent the day planting shrubs and flowers to enhance the look of the new playground. Students entertained the volunteers by singing some graduation songs to show their appreciation. “The staff and students are so thankful for all the hard work that the Goldman Sachs volunteers did to make “Busy Town” a delightful and colorful place to play and enjoy,” commented Michelle Lawrence, Education Behavior Specialist for DDI.

Team LICADD

On August 3rd, in Central Park, the New York City Triathlon saw New York’s finest athletes swim, run and cycle to glory through New York City. This year, the roster included four of our city’s most dedicated athletes who made up Team LICADD. Together they raised over $11,000.00 for the council’s lifesaving work here on Long Island. Ed Kerner, Lee Goddard, Jeffrey Crane and Mary Alice O’Connor, in her first ever NYC Triathlon, participated in this year’s event for LICADD and brought spirit and heart into this annual New York tradition for Team LICADD. The participants dove into the Hudson River at 5 a.m. and brought in record times for this leg of the event. The

1500 kilometer swim in the Hudson brought in times of 18 and 19 minutes for the team, they then jumped onto their bicycles and cycled 40 kilometers down the West Side Highway. The last part of this event was a 10K run in Central Park, again with stellar times. “This is my second New York City Triathlon this year, it meant even more to me to do this event. We all see and feel the crisis here in every part of New York. By competing in the NYC Triathlon I am able to “Pay It Forward,” said Ed Kerner. “When my wife and I moved back into the city a few years ago, I got involved with this event and I look forward to doing it again next year for Team LICADD. To me, nothing is more

important than the work this organization does on Long Island and I was proud to be involved.” For over 58 years, LICADD has successfully delivered evidence-based programs designed to prevent and treat substance abuse and addiction. LICADD offers crisis intervention, screenings, brief interventions, referrals to treatment and several family education workshops to help Long Islanders struggling with the effects of addiction. Winner Announced The Southold Historical Society is pleased to announce that local artist Pat Feiler was this year’s winner of the “Thomas Currie-Bell Memorial Purchase Prize” in the North Fork Annual juried art exhibition held at the Southold Historical Society’s Reichert Family Center. Feiler’s work, entitled “S. S. Rendezvous and Race,”

was selected from nearly 50 entries submitted. The painting depicts several vessels, including the S.S. 76, whose local owner recently remarked “I consider the painting outstanding and Patricia an exceptional artist.” Patricia Feiler lives in Mattituck, New York.
