Walk a Day in Our Shoes diagnosed as being medically frail, chronically ill or suffering from any type of life threatening condition(s) have as far as services available to help them when and/or if they leave the hospital. These children have medical conditions that often require intensive nursing care, and other services that, if are available, are very fragmented and difficult to coordinate. The daunting task of home care is extremely overwhelming, especially without an agency available to coordinate the services needed to support such child at home. Until Angela’s House, there were no local specialized homes or facilities available that could care for these children and their unique needs. The nearest facilities were often out of state, leaving families in a very difficult position – have their child in a setting where they would

receive quality care and travel hours to see them, or place them in a non-age appropriate setting and have them close to home. These voids in the system make a horrifying situation even worse. Angela’s House, founded in 1992, offers hope for families and children living with severe medical conditions. Their home care programs works with over 600 children that live at home with their parents, by coordinating the home care services needed to support these children living at home. This may include services such as: medical equipment, nursing support, therapies, medications and making their homes handicapped accessible. Angela’s House also has three beautiful specialty homes that have the ability to offer children, with often very severe medical needs, the therapeutic, nursing

Buddy the Birthday Boy By: Jamie Lynn Ryan I’m baaaaack! The human is busy putting the finishing touches on Seasons™ Magazine this week, so she asked me to fill in yet again. From what I’ve heard, readers absolutely loved my last column and have been writing in regularly to check on my wellbeing. Thanks for the love, and all the “half-birthday” wishes. So how does it feel to celebrate six months in the bowl, you ask? Not too shabby. I received my very first birthday present in the form of a gift card to Pet Smart, and the human says I can pick out anything I want. I’ll have to give it some thought. I hear they

have even bigger plants than the one I currently reside with, or maybe a castle… or a seashell to sleep in… the possibilities are endless. My one gripe is that, after weeks of this birthday talk, there was no cake – not even a cupcake, a cookie, a crumb… nothing. I thought I was finally going to sample a morsel when the human’s “Mommy” came over and tempted me with a Flying Saucer ice cream sandwich. How yummy those chocolate crumbs looked. But, alas, the rogue ﬂake was snatched from my waiting jaws. What a tease. That aside, the day was very enjoyable, with much

singing and celebrating in honor of me and all my finned glory. And well it should have been. I am, after all, the most lively addition to that drab little apartment, if I do say so myself. I even complement the throw pillows and accents. I am, to put it quite simply, the finest accessory in the place. I suppose I should also note that my milestone was shared by the human – something about turning 33 I think. That seems like an awfully big number. Maybe that’s why she’s so tall. Such are some of the thoughts I ponder as I swim my daily 437 laps around the bowl… ‘Til next time, this is Buddy, signing off.

Playing for Peace The Play for Peace Soccer Tournament was first organized in 2009 through the office of thenLegislator Jack Eddington in conjunction with the Patchogue-Medford Youth Soccer League as a response to the Marcelo Lucero tragedy. In 2011, when Legislator Calarco was elected, he carried on the tradition of presenting the tournament. Joselo Lucero, Marcelo’s brother, spoke to the crowd about the importance of having an event such as this to bring the community together. Approximately 500 spectators came to this free event. Twelve teams — eight men’s teams and four women’s teams

— participated in the tournament. In the men’s division, the PatchogueMedford Congress of Teachers was the winning team, while Rudi’s Bar & Grill won the women’s division. The Team Sportsmanship Award went to the North Shore Youth Council. “Gershow Recycling is pleased again to support this year’s ‘Play for Peace.’ We salute former Legislator Eddington for establishing this event and Legislator Calarco for continuing it, as an effort to bring members of our diverse communities together and build understanding through sports,” said Kevin Gershowitz, President, Gershow Recycling.

A sanctuary was established in Carlisle, South Carolina by the organization’s founder, Whitney Knowlton, who has since relocated from Southampton to the Carolinas to be closer to where the animals are and be more “hands on.” There are approximately 150 dogs and 100 cats living in the sanctuary. Allen said, “We transport

animals every week and hold adoption events across Long Island.” The organization has adopted out over 1000 animals a year. Students learned that the Last Chance Animal Rescue has a Rescue Ranger Program for kids ages 6-16. They learn empathy, responsibility, and how to care for an animal. “We are so happy to receive the donations from the students at Premm. Every bit counts,” said Allen.

Gershow Recycling sponsored and donated $2,000 to help defray the costs of putting on the seventh annual Play for Peace/Jugando Por La Paz Soccer Tournament, which was held August 8th o at the Patchogue-Medford Youth Soccer Complex in Medford. The goals of Play For Peace were to bring together diverse nationalities within the community for a full day of World Cup-style soccer and to use sports as a way for people from different ethnic backgrounds to find common ground. This year’s tournament was organized by the Office of Suffolk County Legislator Robert Calarco.

Eastern Suffolk BOCES students from Premm Learning Center invited representatives from Last Chance Animal Rescue to their school to present them with food, towels, treats, and cleaning supplies for rescued cats and dogs. One-by-one, students approached the volunteers and placed their donation in a bin labeled “Clifford’s Pet Supply Drive.” The donation drive was named after Clifford because all the students are familiar with the Clifford the Big Red Dog book and how he was the runt of a litter of

Students at Eastern Suffolk BOCES Premm Learning Center in Oakdale found people who were kind and understood them, downtown at Premmville, just like Petula Clark said they would. The fantastical town created in the center of the special education center was geared toward heightening community awareness and giving the students exposure to people and places. The planning committee decided that Premmville would need a post office, grocery store, pet store, clothing store, art gallery, and bakery. With that information and some creativity and ingenuity, the occupational and physical therapists (OT/ PTs), and speech, language, and special education teachers built it! The town was centered on a park which included a

slide, swing, fishing pond, and ball field. Created by the OT/PTs, the park targeted the development of fine and gross motor skills, as well as gait training. At the grocery store, students received a grocery list and grocery bag. They used the Picture Exchange Communication System (PECS) to identify the grocery items. After they matched the item with the product, they received a stamp on the grocery list to show they completed the task. All of the stores utilized assistive technology so every level of developmentally disabled student could participate in the activities. The bakery had a blender and related utensils, the department store had a sensory mirror, the pet store had a variety of animals that walked, chirped, and barked, the

The Islip Animal Shelter and Adopt-a-Pet Center will be celebrating National Dog Day on Wednesday, August 26th by offering free dog adoptions. Live. Golf Feastival Set For the 46th consecutive year, the Fuoco Memorial Golf Feastival will benefit Camp Pa-Qua-Tuck. This year’s event will take place on Thursday, September 17th, at the Bellport Country Club, and again is sponsored by the Patchogue Rotary Club. One hundred percent of the proceeds go directly to Camp Pa-Qua-Tuck to provide hundreds of special-needs children and young adults with a unique summer respite experience. Rotary Club member Steve Fuoco serves as chairman for the tournament, along with a very active committee of Rotarians, family and friends. Camp Pa-Qua-Tuck is a summer camp on the east end of Long Island serving children and young adults ages six to 21 with physical and developmental special needs. Its mission is to provide campers with a daily or sleepover experience inclusive of medical care, along with activities such as swimming, rowing, campfires and tending to an animal farm, all while developing lifelong friendships that they may otherwise never have the

opportunity to enjoy. The Fuoco family has a longstanding connection with Camp Pa-Qua-Tuck as Beth Ann Fuoco-Santos attended the camp for many years. To this day, the Fuoco family continues to be involved in the camp, with Steve Fuoco as President of the Camp Pa-Qua-Tuck Patrons Group. In addition, Steve’s children Katy Fuoco-Hill and Jimmy Fuoco assist in running key operations of the Golf Feastival. Since 1969, the Fuoco Memorial has donated nearly $1,300,000 to the camp, and built a 13-bed dormitory for the campers. This year’s honorees are Marcella Weiss and the memory of her sister, Marie Frey, who were the founders of the popular “Spooky Walk,” which has raised over $1.5 million for the camp to date. As co-owner of Kurt Weiss Greenhouses in Center Moriches, Mrs. Weiss and her family continue to donate supplies and manpower to the camp. Unique to this tournament are the nine “Feastivals” presented throughout the course. Various Italian “Feastival Stands” will offer

meatballs, clams, pasta, wine, an Italian kitchen, seafood, a Caribbean Tiki Bar, gourmet pizza, craft beer tasting, an Italian Gourmet Deli, Zeppolas and Cannolis. In addition, there is a contest for Longest Drive or Closest to the Pin on every hole. There is also a Hit the Green challenge on every par 3 and a putting contest on the 19th hole, and a holein-one prize car, courtesy of Brown’s Automotive Group. The event will conclude with a cocktail hour and dinner buffet, followed by a program and awards ceremony. Back-to-School Blast On Thursday, the office of Suffolk County Legislator Leslie Kennedy awarded an official Proclamation to recognize Joan Travan for her exceptional contributions to the community of Suffolk. Joan Travan has been an active member of the Suffolk County Association of Municipal Employees for many years. After nearly 25 years of public service to the community of Suffolk County, Joan Travan has decided to retire, she was promptly congratulated and honored by both Leslie and John Kennedy for her

lifetime of hard work and achievements.
