I have always been a big believer in the concept of birthdays as beginnings, sort of personal new years, if you will, for each individual person. As such, my expectations of such days tend to aim for a level of unreasonable perfection, whether celebrating my own or that of a loved one; feeling that, somehow, this one day represents an omen of things to come over the next 364. This year, I decided to begin my day by driving to my favorite local sunrise spot, in the hope of catching one of those breathtakingly spectacular views first thing in the morning. All week, the weather looked to be beautiful, clear skies and sunshine all the way. Though it seemed exceptionally gray and gloomy as I headed south, I hoped the clouds would soon be accented by shooting rays of gold and pink.

Over 30 minutes later, as I aimlessly wandered the docks, attempting to capture “artsy” photographs of the still-muted surroundings, I wondered if this particular outing had been a colossal waste of time. Here I was, sleepily counting down to 6:03 a.m., when I could just as well have stayed under the covers at home. New beginnings, indeed. And then, just as I was about to cut my losses and head back to my pillow and blanket for the remainder of the morning, I heard a young boy who had been fishing at the other end of the dock with his father exclaim, “Dad, look at the sun! How cool is that?” Shifting my gaze over the horizon, I was shocked to see a huge red ball emerging out of the haze, nearly 10 minutes past “official” sunrise time. As I attempted to capture

the sight before me, I realized that pictures would never do it justice; and so, for once, I simply watched as the red turned to gold and the sun blanketed the bay with its shimmering rays. Too often do we become caught up in documenting a particular event, rarely allowing ourselves the time to take it all in, to truly become immersed in the experience. While one single day may not an entire year dictate, it can certainly set the tone in a symbolic manner; and on this, my 35th birthday, I was heartened to witness the gloom lift to reveal stunning beauty underneath. Patience is a virtue, as is appreciating the small moments, in the hope that they will lead to many more down the road. Here’s to day one being one small step in that direction.

experts came together on August 8th, as part of the Suffolk County Legislature’s Charting the Course series. The event, held at the Suffolk Community College Selden campus, highlighted how technology can assist government with delivering effective and efficient services, streamlining and simplifying internal government processes, and transforming operations. A main panel of representatives from county government, local business and technology companies, outlined the

issues facing government while technology experts addressed those concerns. Attendees then attended specific breakout panels on Predictive Analytics, Cybersecurity, Tech Smart Growth and Next Gen Residents, and Business Development & Procurement to discuss more detailed information. The Apps & Gadgets Café featured displays and handouts from companies that participated in the event and A Taste of Suffolk, featured wines and products donated by local sponsors.

We must continue to play for peace and fight bigotry in all its forms each and every day.” Deputy Presiding Officer Calarco first organized the tournament in 2009 in response to the murder of Ecuadorian immigrant Marcelo Lucero, while he was an aide to Legislator Jack Eddington. Since then it has grown to include women’s teams. In 2013, the tournament first included a “champion’s dinner,” donated by local restaurants and where the players all have a chance to sit together and eat when the games are finished. “I am proud the host this tournament every year and I happy to see many returning and new faces from the soccer playing community,” stated Deputy Presiding Officer Calarco. “I want to thank

the Patchogue-Medford Youth Soccer League for their partnership. I also want to thank the committee of dedicated volunteers who work all year to make this event as success.” Volunteers from St. Francis de Sales spent the day tending to the players and serving dinner after the games. This year’s funds will be donated to Long Island Head Start’s scholarship program. Corporate sponsors of the event include Gershow Recycling, Suffolk County Police Benevolent Association, TriTec Real Estate, Brookhaven Memorial Hospital, Suffolk Transportation Service and Bridgehampton National Bank. Coca-Cola donated 40 cases of Dasani Water and Powerade to keep the players hydrated. More than 30 local businesses and restaurants sponsored individual teams or donated food to the dinner.

The graduating seniors from across Suffolk County were honored at the 17th annual Butch Dellecave Awards ceremony in June at Villa Lombardi’s in Holbrook. Named in memory of the legendary educator, official and coach

Gaetano “Butch” Dellecave, the award is the product of a highly successful 17-year partnership between local school districts in Suffolk County and the award organizers - the Economic Opportunity Council of Suffolk, Inc., the Butch Dellecave Foundation and Newsday. Both Kyla and Joshua were three-sport athletes throughout their high school careers. In her senior year, Kyla earned an All-County title in field hockey, All-League in track, and All-County and All-Long Island in lacrosse. Joshua was the captain of the varsity soccer team and track team in his senior year. He earned Academic

All-County honors in soccer and All-League status in spring track this past school year. “Both Kyla and Joshua were true leaders on and off the field throughout their high school athletic and academic careers, and the community is very proud of them,” said BayportBlue Point Director of Physical Education, Health and Interscholastic Sports Timothy Mullins. This fall, Kyla will be attending SUNY Albany on a lacrosse scholarship and Joshua will be attending the University of Tampa on a four-year Army ROTC scholarship.

On Saturday, August 12th, the 9th annual “Play for Peace” Tournament was held at the PatchogueMedford Youth Soccer League’s fields on Sipp Avenue. More than 500 players, spectators, coaches and volunteers came together to participate in the tournament that encourages togetherness in the community. “This year’s tournament was a tremendous success,” stated Deputy Presiding Officer Rob Calarco. “In a terrible coincidence, as we played on Saturday the terrible events in Charlottesville unfolded as America watched. I helped organize the first soccer tournament after the tragic death of Marcelo Lucero. On Friday, August 11th, Congressman Lee Zeldin presented a Purple Heart to the family of PFC Roy B. DeWitt, a World War II veteran who served in the U.S. Army. Much of his family now lives throughout the First Congressional District. The Purple Heart Medal was established by General George Washington at Newburgh, New York, in 1782, during the Revolutionary War. It was re-established by the President of the United States per War Department General Orders in 1932. The Purple Heart is limited to members of the Armed Forces of the United States who, while serving our country, are

wounded, killed, or have since died due to wounds received during battle. It is awarded in the name of the President of the United States. On August 28th, 1942, at age 25, PFC DeWitt enlisted in the U.S. Army and was assigned to the 101st Airborne Division, 401st Glider Infantry Regiment, and the 82nd Airborne Division, 325th Glider Infantry Regiment, Company 3HQ. In September 1944, he received a gunshot wound to the foot during “Operation Market Garden.” Following this battle, he was captured by the Germans and held as a Prisoner of War at Stalag

12A in Belgium. He died in captivity there on November 2nd, 1944, from an apparent fracture to the back of his skull. He is buried in Belgium at the American War Cemetery in Ardennes. For his selfless military service, PFC DeWitt received the Prisoner of War Medal, Army Good Conduct Medal, American Campaign Medal, World War II Victory Medal, European-African-Middle Eastern Campaign Medal with Arrowhead Device and bronze service star, and the Glider Badge. On Friday, August 11th, Congressman Zeldin presented PFC DeWitt’s family with the Purple Heart on behalf of a grateful nation.

In an effort to give back to their community and ensure that elementary students are ready to begin a successful school year in September, members of Connetquot High School’s Helping Hands Club recently volunteered their time to create backto-school care packages for students in need throughout the district’s

seven elementary schools. As a result of the effort, the club filled 36 backpacks with crayons, rulers, notebooks, folders and glue sticks. In order to raise funds for the school supplies, students held after-school pizza sales during the school year, a fundraiser at Crazy Crepe Café of Ronkonkoma, and sold

bottled water at the Connetquot High School graduation ceremony this past June. Under the guidance of club advisers Lynn Parks and Susan Schiappa, students work diligently throughout the year to volunteer and lend a helping hand within the school community.

On Tuesday August 15th, Supervisor Romaine joined with the staff of the Port Jefferson Brewing Company to announce their involvement in Brookhaven’s “Brew to Moo” program. The Town’s “Brew to Moo” program is aimed to reduce the amount of local brewery by-product in our waste stream. Local breweries and distilleries

produce tons of spent grains which have reduced caloric content but provide protein and fiber that can supplement corn for feed. The Town of Brookhaven will regularly pick up the material and deliver it to farms and ranches to be used as feed for their animals. The Port Jefferson Brewing Company is the second local brewer to sign onto the program, the

first was The Brick House Brewery of Patchogue. The first ranch to sign on to the program is the Double D Ranch in Manorville. Using spent grains for livestock feed dates back to the advent of beer and with corn and other commodity prices rising, the use of brewery by-products is growing.

Going Green at School Eco-conscious lifestyles may have transformed the ways people behave at home or on the job, but many schools have taken a little longer to embrace eco-friendly practices. Education Leaders More than 300 educational leaders from Long Island came together for SCOPE Education Service’s 33rd annual Dinner Meeting for Superintendents and School Board Members, which was held at the Bourne Mansion in Oakdale on August 10th. SCOPE provides a vast array of services to school districts, including before and after-school child care programs, school enrichment programs and staff professional development. The event provided a networking opportunity for new and returning school superintendents and board of education trustees and other professionals who work closely with the education system. SCOPE Executive Director George L. Duffy urged those in attendance to utilize and benefit from the many programs and

services SCOPE provides. He also introduced all newly installed school board members and new superintendents, and wished them success in their positions. Lorraine Deller, executive director of the Nassau-Suffolk School Boards Association, said that in their roles as board of education members and school superintendents they have become guardians of Long Island’s “high performing and highly regarded” public schools. Speakers included Roger Tilles, who serves as Long Island’s representative on the New York State Board of Regents, and New York State Commissioner of Education MaryEllen Elia. They provided updates on changes being made to education policy such as state assessments and teacher evaluations. Regent Tilles explained

that now more than ever teachers and administrators from local school districts are a part of these discussions. “We’re listening to you,” he said. Commissioner Elia spoke about the state Education Department’s plan to meet the requirements of the federal Every Student Succeeds Act, commonly known as ESSA. More than 150 meetings have been held throughout the state with input received from administrators, teachers, parents and students. She also spoke about the need to provide all students in the state with access to higherlevel courses and career and technical programs, and said that a revised teacher evaluation system is in the works. Following her presentation, she took questions from the audience on a variety of education issues.

Tips for College Applicants Choosing where to apply to college is a big decision that can affect the lives of young students for years to come. The college application process can have more immediate impacts as well, as U.S. News reported that the average college application fee was $41 in the spring of 2015, meaning families can expect to spend several hundred dollars just to apply to colleges. The rising cost of a college education coupled with a competitive job market only serve to emphasize the importance high school students and their families must place on deciding where to apply. The following are a handful of strategies families can employ to make students’ decisions regarding where to apply to college a little easier. Don’t hesitate from applying to a dream school. The Princeton Review defines dream schools as those colleges

or universities where a student’s academic credentials fall in the low end or below the school’s averages for students accepted the year prior. But even students who meet the academic requirements established by their dream schools may be hesitant to apply to such schools because of the cost of tuition. Students whose academic records fall just short of their dream schools’ criteria or whose financial means make attending their dream schools seem impossible should still apply to those schools. Financial aid might be available, and schools might look at more than just academic performance, particularly for students whose grades fall just short of last years’ average accepted applicants. Don’t be deterred by application fees. Stanford University’s application fee for 2017 was $90, making the school one of the

more expensive colleges or universities to apply to. But many schools, including Stanford, waive those fees for certain applicants. Students should not expect each school to waive their application fees, but they also should not let those fees deter them from applying, especially if they meet or exceed the application requirements. Choose the right safety school. Safety schools are those colleges or universities where applicants’ academic credentials make them a near certainty to gain admission. But when choosing safety schools, students should pick schools that they would enjoy attending. Applying to a school simply because you can get in and not because you want to enroll there can make for an unpleasant college experience should you ultimately end up attending that college.

Going Above and Beyond Teachers provide many things to their students. In addition to an education, support and guidance, many teachers also feel compelled to enhance their classrooms with supplies they’ve purchased out-ofpocket. According to a poll of 1,500 teachers conducted by the educational resource Edutopia, 93 percent of teachers feel obligated or somewhat obligated to buy school supplies for their

classrooms with their own money. The Education Market Association says that virtually all teachers wind up paying out of pocket for supplies. The amounts spent annually can be upwards of $1,000 per teacher. In addition, not all of the teachers funding supplies work in low-income districts. A report published in early 2016 by the Center for Budget and Policy Priorities found that

many states now provide less financial support per student than they did before the recession took hold roughly nine years ago. Districts forced to work under tight budgets are increasingly outsourcing the costs of supplies to parents. When parents fail to provide supplies, teachers are bearing the brunt of the costs to avoid seeing their students go without necessary resources.
