The Social Brain is a brand new 501(c)(3) non profit in the state of New York. They are on the brink of breaking through as one of the most unique and helpful organizations that serves those suffering from a brain injury. Their mission is to provide brain injury survivors the opportunity to build friendships through socialization and reduced isolation. This organization began in January 2019 when a group of individuals, families and professionals joined together to brainstorm ideas of how they can help brain injury survivors socialize and partake in various hobbies together. Many survivors spend much of their lives in and out of rehab and home feeling isolated, but The Social Brain formed to change that. After hosting various events for survivors such as a day at Sweetbriar Nature Center, a Bowling Event, a Library Day and an afternoon at Four Star Ranch, it was obvious that they were reaching a population in need. Just last month, The Social Brain was granted 501(c)(3) status in the state of New York and they have just started working out of a community center located at 202 Middle Country Road in Middle Island. The Social Brain operates solely on volunteers and their outreach comes not only from word of mouth, but from help through their recent partnerships with local hospitals, school districts, neurology

Energy Bus Leadership Journey Administrators, teachers, psychologists, social workers and guidance counselors representing the BayportBlue Point School District came together to be trained for the Energy Bus Leadership Journey. It is the district’s firm belief that this initiative will adapt with the current socialemotional learning efforts and BBP’s established goto person program. The Energy Bus for Schools journey is based on the books by Jon Gordon, “The Energy Bus: 10 Rules to Fuel Your Life, Work, and Team with Positive Energy” along with “The Energy Bus for Kids: A Story about Staying Positive and Overcoming Challenges.” Both stories include the main character, George, who is having trouble navigating through his day-to-day problems, whether that be
at work, school and/or his personal life. After reading the books, Niki Spears, a former principal and educator, founded the Energy Bus for Schools Leadership Journey, where schools and districts across the country can be trained to bring back the ideas to students, motivating them to live a more positive life. Since August 2016, when there were just five model schools, the initiative has grown to now feature more than 100, including the five schools which make up the Bayport-Blue Point School District. In addition, Bayport-Blue Point will be the first district in New York State to be officially certified. In the coming school years, the community will be hearing a lot about the Energy Bus journey and the seven principles that go along with it. The district’s

Mobile Library Encourages Reading South Country Central School District’s mobile library has been sparking much excitement throughout the community this summer as members of the Bellport Teachers Association drove the brightly painted school bus throughout the district’s neighborhoods. On Tuesdays and Thursdays, BTA passengers have been searching out students interested in receiving a free book to read. Donations for the mobile library have come from the Book Fairies organization, the
Brookhaven Free Library, the South Country Library and the community. The mobile library made its debut during Bellport High School’s homecoming game last October and has been an important avenue in helping families with establishing their personal home libraries while increasing summer reading. BTA representative Sarah Rauch said that the community has been both welcoming and enthusiastic about the mobile library, which is
an additional avenue for placing books in the hands of children. “The kids are always enthusiastic,” Ms. Rauch said. “Our goal is to encourage summer reading and to start filling up the students’ homes with books. The younger the students are, the more books they need to be reading.” The mobile library will continue to visit the school district’s neighborhoods throughout the summer and will make appearances at district events during the 2019-2020 school year.

Seventy-five studentathletes in grades 5-9 in the Connetquot Central School District attended the 14th annual Lady T-Bird volleyball camp held at Ronkonkoma Middle School in an effort to finetune their volleyball skills and build new friendships. During the two-hour morning sessions that ran during the week of July 15, the students’ training schedule included workouts emphasizing proper basic skills, and later introducing advanced team-related drills and competition.

The Patchogue Rotary Animal Assisted Therapy Program (PRAAT) part-nered with the Patchogue Family YMCA Camp for a summer literacy program. This program was funded by the Rotary Club of Patchogue. The program aims to enhance young people’s reading, listening, social and emotional skills in a fun and de-stressing environment and to foster a passion for literacy and a lifelong love of
reading. The Executive Director at the Y, Donna Boyle, stated, “It’s so rewarding to see the interaction and engagement between the YMCA campers and the PRAAT dogs (and their handlers). The children are enthusiastically building their reading skills and their confidence while happily reading to these well-trained, lovable, adorable dogs. This is truly an awesome community partnership – we thank you

Hiawatha Students Explore Colonial Times A series of lessons on the colonial times that took place last school year sent fourth grade students at Hiawatha Elementary School in the Sachem Central School District back in time as they participated in several activities that recreated aspects of that important time in American history.
Through their explora-tion of colonial times, students researched everyday life, games, trans-portation, food, clothing and commerce. As part of the engaging activities, students practiced penmanship with quill pens and ink, performed math on slate boards and reinforced their spelling and geography
skills during a bee. During an event that culminated their expansive study, students dressed up in attire that was popular during that time period. In addition, family and friends were invited for an outdoor picnic where they made checkerboards, spinning tops and played colonial games.
