onnetquot Central School District students in grades 2-9 recently participated in the 13th Annual Thunderbird Football Clinic. Players were introduced to the skills required to play all offensive and defensive positions. The program is non-contact, and the drills help develop power, speed and agility, while emphasizing teamwork and sportsmanship. Each clinic session ended with competitive and fun games.

quarter average. In an era where college admissions are at an all time high in selectivity, those few points can make or break a person. Something as small as forgetting to turn in that book report freshman year can, in time, prevent you from attaining your dreams. With this in mind, it is an absolute necessity to complete your work! Even if school hasn’t yet started, the choices you make can affect your standing in September. In my school, your summer work accounts for about 20% of your first quarter grade! That means, if you were to get a zero on that work, you could get a maximum of only eighty.

Study hard now, so you won’t have to the night before school starts. Doing a little bit of work each night will undoubtably make your last few days of summer more enjoyable. Even though reading a book or doing some math problems may seem like a terrible time, every moment you spend will be repaid when you get into the college of your dreams. Putting in the extra effort now will result in a positive outcome in the future. On the other hand, slacking during your summers will only haunt you. Take the first step towards a superior grade - do your summer homework!

A Time To Celebrate By: Jamie Lynn Ryan Birthdays. Some people love them, others despise that annual reminder that, like it or not, time is flying by – with or without you. Personally, I’ve always been a fan – not on the my-birthday-should-be-anational-holiday scale, but definitely as an occasion that I’ve looked forward to each year. It’s a time to celebrate with family and friends, and to show your appreciation to others when their special days come around. Too often, we get so caught up in our daily lives that we forget to acknowledge those who

play such an important role. Sure, those milestones can serve as not-so-subtle reminders that, hey, the clock is ticking – didn’t you have all sorts of things you wanted to accomplish by now?!? Better get to it! But I think those thoughts can creep in at any age, young, old or in between. We set hypothetical deadlines for when things “have” to be done, knowing full well that life rarely works out so perfectly. The best we can do is move forward, making a little progress along the way, pausing to celebrate and appreciate those things

– and people – who matter most. The rest – the gray hairs, the wrinkles, the aches and pains – they’re just normal wear and tear from a life well lived! So the next time a birthday comes along, milestone or not, try to enjoy it. Appreciate those who wish to appreciate you, and remember to pay it forward when their own special occasions come along. It’s nice to be remembered, and better than that – it’s nice to wake up to a brand new day - or year - with lots to look forward to.

Recently, civic and religious leaders, residents, family and friends joined together to celebrate the Town’s renaming of a portion of Brookhaven Avenue in Bellport in honor of Bishop Ralph L. Jefferson, founder of the Jefferson Temple Church of God in Christ.

Bishop Jefferson, who recently celebrated his 80th birthday, is a decorated veteran who was wounded in action during the Korean War. In 1964, he started his church in a twelve seat taxi stand and later established four churches in Port Jefferson, Selden, Centereach and

Bellport. In 1988, he was voted “Man of the Year” by the Long Island Advance. Bishop Jefferson is held in high regard and respected by residents of the Bellport area for his many years of service to the community.

Nine students from the Eastern Suffolk BOCES (ESBOCES) Islip Career Center (ICC) in Oakdale have been chosen to participate in Project SEARCH. Beginning September 9th, they will be immersed in internships at Medford Multicare Center. This grant-funded pilot program is designed to train, educate, and assist students with disabilities transition from school to the adult world and obtain and maintain competitive employment. Several internships are available in the areas of facilities maintenance,

central supply, laundry, housekeeping, recreation, and rehabilitation. The internships are based on the students’ interests, strengths, and needs using curriculum established by the Project SEARCH organization. Project SEARCH Long Island is modeled after the highly successful Project SEARCH at the University of Rochester (U of R) Medical Center. Data compiled by U of R indicates that 82% of students who successfully complete Project SEARCH will become gainfully employed. The United States Department of

Labor reports a 17.8% employment rate for people with disabilities. Chief Operating Officer Gary Bixhorn said, “We continually pilot new initiatives to benefit the educational experience for all of our students and we believe that Project SEARCH Long Island will be a wonderful opportunity for our students with special needs to gain the skills necessary to transition into the adult world with self-confidence, and become independent and competitively employed.”

Ruff Riders Rally

More than 100 motorcycle riders and animal lovers participated in Save-A-Pet Animal Rescue and Adoption Center’s Eighth Annual Ruff Riders Rally on August 10th. The event raised money for the care of rescued animals. The motorcycle rally started at Petco in Rocky Point. From there, bikers toured eastern Suffolk

County and through southern Long Island and ended up at 89 North in Patchogue. Registration is now underway for the 33rd Annual Stop World Hunger Tennis Tournament. The tournament is open to tennis players who have not qualified to play in this year’s U.S. Open Tennis Tournament. Intermediate (3.0-3.5), advanced intermediate (3.5-4.0), and advanced (4.0-4.5+) players from more than forty Long Island communities are expected to participate. The purpose of the tennis tournament is to provide an enjoyable

recreational activity, while helping those in desperate need. All entry fees and donations are forwarded to Catholic Relief Services to assist in their efforts to feed God’s hungry children throughout the world. Assistance is provided where the need is greatest, regardless of race, religion and/or nationality. Events consist of men’s singles, women’s singles, men’s doubles, women’s doubles and mixed doubles. The cost is $6 for singles and $10 for doubles.

Participants schedule their own matches at mutally convenient times and sites. All matches are to be played between September 14th and November 16th. Regional Honoree Woodhull Elementary School’s 2013 Parents as Reading Partners program has been chosen as the outstanding PARP program for the Suffolk region. The program, titled Don’t Bug Me, I’m Reading, ran during the month of March and featured a wide variety of educational activities all centered on fostering a love of reading in children. As the regional winner, Woodhull’s program will now be reviewed at the New York State PTA level for consideration for the New York State PTA PARP award, the winner of which will be announced before the organization’s convention in November.

In a letter announcing this honor, Suffolk Region PTA Director Jacqueline Wilson and ARTS Chairman Cindy Cristman jointly commended the school’s PTA. “Your dedicated volunteers should be very proud of their efforts on behalf of literacy in the school,” they noted. “The resilience that your community displayed in the wake of the devastation on Fire Island due to the storm was nothing short of amazing. Your PTA program showcased a great deal of creativity and fun in helping the children to realize the importance of reading.” Throughout the

monthlong program, students and their families were encouraged to read together nightly and participate in the building’s scheduled daily activities and events, which included a book fair and treasure hunt at Barnes and Noble and a family fun night at Woodhull. Special guest readers also demonstrated how reading is a lifelong activity, and with the help of a cultural arts program, the school connected the literacy program to science, with students conducting hands-on experiments on different living arthropods.

Keeping Healthy At College It’s back-to-school time for college students. Avoiding the dreaded “freshman 15” weight gain is a challenge to some young students when faced for the first time with a daily array of healthy and not-so-healthy food choices. The American Heart Association (AHA) recommends that college students, and everyone, know their daily calorie

needs and try to create a healthy eating plan that incorporates a few basic healthy eating goals. Weight Gain A Growing Problem More than 60% of adults in the US are either overweight or obese and the most significant weight changes occur in the 1829 year old age group. A study by Washington University in St. Louis on

college students’ weight gain showed that body weight increased in 70% of the 290 students studied between the beginning of their freshman year and the end of their sophomore year. So what’s a few extra pounds? Obesity can lead to health complications such as heart disease, type 2 diabetes, high blood pressure and high

Our Lady of Consolation Nursing and Rehabilitative Care Center, a member of Catholic Health Services (CHS), is pleased to announce that they have received a grant for $300,000 to help support the funding of the Children’s Care Pavilion for ventilator dependent children. This pavilion will address the urgent need for these services on Long Island. Additional grants and resources will allow Our Lady of Consolation to extend their clinical expertise and provide long-term care to a special population of ventilator dependent children. When a child living on Long Island becomes sick or injured and requires the long term assistance of a ventilator for breathing, there is at present no local comprehensive program to support them. These children must be relocated miles from home, often out of state for their care. Last year, Catholic Health Services received a HEAL grant of 3.2 million dollars to begin development of a cross continuum of care. Catholic Health Services hopes to achieve a continuum of care for these special patients through collaboration between its members. A 10-bed pediatric rehabilitation unit at St. Charles Hospital will provide initial acute rehabilitation for children who recently experienced a catastrophic event with

a goal of returning them home with support from a pediatric team of Catholic Home. Children unable to return home will be transferred to longterm care at Our Lady of Consolation Nursing and Rehabilitative Center (OLC). OLC’s pediatric ventilator unit will be a 22 bed pavilion built entirely for the pediatric population within the existing footprint of the nursing home. This space will also include a child friendly outdoor recreation area. The educational, nutritional and clinical needs of these new pediatric residents will be provided within in a child-friendly environment. This will not be a unit for children embedded in a geriatric care facility. Rather, it will be a nurturing environment with its own discrete entrance, space, specialized staff, and program with the sole focus of quality care for children. “This funding from the O’Toole Foundation advances our efforts to develop this critical resource for children and their families,” said Joseph Tomaino, Executive Vice President for Continuing Care Division of Catholic Health Services, “The impact of injury or illness on these families is compounded by the painful separation that they must go through in order to obtain services.”

New Hammock For Gibbons

The Long Island Game Farm recently received a hammock made out of a used fire hose that was created by a retired firefighter for the Game Farm’s gibbons. The gibbons, who are sisters, immediately started enjoying their new hammock once it was installed in their cage. Tom Lambui, a retired fireman and husband of Stacy Lambui, who works in the Game Farm’s Customer Service Department, acquired an old fire hose from Anthony

J. Morabito, Service Representative, Firematic Supply Co. in East Yaphank. Mr. Lambui built the new hammock and presented it to the Game Farm for the gibbons to use. “We are so thankful for Tom’s generous gift,” says Melinda Novak, Vice P r e s i d e n t / C o - O w n e r, Long Island Game Farm. “We recently installed the hammock and the gibbon sisters immediately started enjoying it. It’s really wonderful!” A gibbon is a part of the

ape family, and spends the majority of its time in trees. Gibbons range in color from gray and black to brown. They have extremely long arms which help them balance and settle as they jump from tree to tree. They can jump more than 25 feet and land fairly easily. Volunteers Of The Year Stony Brook University Hospital has named Mary Briney as Volunteer of the Year and Elizabeth O’Grady as Junior Volunteer of the Year for 2013 in recognition of their dedicated volunteer service to the hospital. O’Grady and Briney were among those honored at the hospital’s annual Volunteer Recognition luncheon, held on July 17th at the Hilton Garden Inn. Volunteers received awards for reaching service milestones ranging from 100 to 14,500 hours of service. Briney began her volunteer service in 2011 and has donated nearly 500 hours to Stony Brook University Cancer Center patients. “At the Cancer Center, Mary coordinates the biweekly soup luncheon where she prepares warm bowls of soup to distribute to patients who are looking for a soothing snack while receiving their cancer treatments,” said Kathy Kress, Assistant Director of Volunteer

Services at SBUH. “At the hospital, Mary acts as the ambassador for the inpatient Arts in Medicine program. She is always there to help out so that the patients get the most benefit from the activity. Mary is affable, empathetic and a genuine caring person. She is always in tune with the patients’ needs and always makes sure whatever is needed is done with care and accuracy.” O’Grady, 18, was born at Stony Brook University Hospital and spent time as a newborn in the Neonatal Intensive Care Unit. She began volunteering at the hospital in 2012 and has donated more than 200 hours of service to patients at Stony Brook Children’s Hospital. The daughter of Jerome and Marian O’Grady, she is a rising senior at Ward Melville High School. “Elizabeth has been described as a very mature and responsible high school student,” Kress said. “In the playroom, she engages in various play activities with the

patients and their siblings and goes out of her way to make sure that the children have whatever they need. She has been known to stay after her shift to find a missing game or DVD that a child has asked for. Elizabeth is a pleasure to work with and a great addition to the Child Life department.” Stony Brook University Hospital Volunteers provide help each year caring for patients and spend time with patients’ family members. Each year, more than 700 Junior and Senior Volunteers assist staff with the day-to-day work that contributes to a quality healthcare experience for patients and families.
