Waiting Out The Storm By: Jamie Lynn Ryan As I sit here at home waiting for the floodwaters to recede from the latest torrential downpour to douse Long Island, I am reminded of how we are all truly at the mercy of Mother Nature. If Hurricane Sandy taught us anything, it was that no amount of preparation can adequately hold its own against the wrath of the elements. In this, we are all equal. And yet, there are

those who will try. Try to drive through three feet of water, try to navigate over icy roads, try to convince themselves of some way to rise above those circumstances clearly beyond their control. If the past several years have taught us anything, it is that these efforts are futile. Stay home. Accept the fact that, sometimes, it is better to wait out the storm than to drive (literally) into it. The same can be said for life as a whole. As

much as we all have this desperate need to control everything, we can’t. Simple as that. Sometimes, we need to accept fate and wait out the figurative “storm” until calmer winds prevail. In these situations, patience is truly a virtue, an enviable trait known only to some. And with that, I see rays of sun peeking through the clouds… Let’s hope I don’t meet too many obstacles on the road ahead.

many ways during the following years, including petitioning the PlainviewOld Bethpage Central School District’s Board of Education to keep the technology program open and recruiting local sponsors. Danny also joined PlainviewOld Bethpage’s FIRST® Robotics team, and at the age of 6, their daughter Emily quickly became the team’s mascot. Emily later joined a local FIRST® LEGO® League (FLL) team for students ages nine to 14, which competed in the NYC FLL Tournament. When the team lost its coach, Stephanie and another parent stepped up and began coaching the team together the following year. In 2003, Stephanie was approached by SBPLI’s founder, Fred Breithut, to join a new committee which would bring FLL programs to

Long Island. She has been a dedicated and active committee member since then, helping to grow the program from 13 teams the first year to over 110 teams in the 10th year. She also helped to start the Jr. FIRST® LEGO® League (Jr. FLL) on Long Island for students ages six to nine. Three of the Sterns’ four children - Andrew, Danny and Emily - participated in FIRST® programs, chose Engineering as their majors in college, and can attest to the value of SBPLI’s FIRST® programs. During this journey Stephanie and Jeff realized they wanted to be even more involved with SBPLI. The Stern family is still active in volunteering their time and talents at many FIRST® competitions and events. They are proud that members of

their family and many of their friends have given their support as well. Jeff is well-known in the community as a FLL Judge, a sponsor, and a staunch supporter of the teams. Also, in the past year, they personally have raised more than $10,000 for the programs and have strongly supported the SBPLI TD Bank fundraising project. Registration and lunch start at 10:00 a.m. with a shotgun start at noon. Golf will be followed by a cocktail reception at 5:00 p.m. and a dinner at 6:00 p.m. The cost is $900.00 per foursome or $250.00 per golfer which includes BBQ lunch, reception and dinner. Gershow Recycling sponsored and donated $2,000 to help defray the costs of putting on the sixth annual Play for Peace/Jugando Por La Paz Soccer Tournament, which was held August 9th at the Patchogue-Medford Youth Soccer Complex in Medford. Approximately 500 spectators came to this free event. Twelve teams - eight men’s teams and four women’s teams - participated in the tournament. In the men’s division, Suffolk County Federal Credit

Union was the winning team. The winner of the Women’s Division was The Village Idiot Bar & Grill. In addition to the tournament, members of the New York Cosmos hosted a soccer clinic for the children in attendance. The goals of Play For Peace were to bring together diverse nationalities within the community for a full day of World Cup-style soccer and to use sports as a way for people from different ethnic backgrounds to find common ground. This year’s tournament was

organized by the office of Suffolk County Legislator Robert Calarco. “Gershow Recycling is pleased again to support this year’s Play for Peace tournament. Golf Feastival On Thursday, September 18th, The Rotary Club of Patchogue and the Fuoco family will present the 45th Annual Fuoco Memorial Golf Feastival at Bellport Country Club. Proceeds from the tournament will go to benefit Camp PaQua-Tuck, which serves special-needs children and young adults ages 6-21 with mental or physical disabilities. Throughout the history of this golf outing, more than $1.2 million has been donated to support the camp. Registration and continental breakfast start at 8:30 a.m. Shotgun tee-off is at 10 a.m. At this year’s tournament, the Rotary Club and the Fuoco family will honor Bridgehampton National Bank. The camp has special meaning to the Fuoco family. Steve Fuoco’s sister, Beth Ann, attended the camp between the ages of 3 and 21 and their father began regularly donating money to Camp Pa-QuaTuck. In 1969, the Fuoco family established its inaugural Fuoco Memorial Golf Outing to raise funds for the Camp. Over time, the small family outing turned into the event it is

today: The Fuoco Memorial Golf Feastival. What makes this golf outing so unique are the “Food Feastivals” offered throughout the course. There will be various “Feastival Stands” featuring an Italian ice stand; pasta bar and wine tasting; Italian figs, grapes and fruits; clams on the half shell; the famous “Italian Gourmet Deli”; a homemade zeppoli and cannoli stand, and a microbeer tasting tent. Every hole will have a contest for “Longest Drive” or “Closest to the Pin,” plus a “Hit-The-Green Challenge” on every par 3. In addition, there will be a prize for a hole-in-one, courtesy of Brown’s Jeep Chrysler Dodge Jeep Ram Fiat. The round of golf is followed by a cocktail hour, a buffet dinner, a grand raffle and auction, all starting at 5 p.m. Registration is $500 per person, which includes all of the above. Cocktail hour and dinner (no golf) is $150 per person. All checks should be made payable to Camp Pa-Qua-Tuck. Sponsorship opportunities are also available. Camp Pa-Qua-Tuck is

Youth Board Appointee

Suffolk County Legislator Bill Lindsay III recently appointed Holbrook resident and St. Joseph’s College Administrator, Bryan Gill, to the Suffolk County Youth Board Coordinating Council for the 8th legislative district. Bryan will serve a three-year term and will report on different initiatives and plans to improve the well-being of all youths throughout Suffolk County. The Youth Board Coordinating Council consists of eighteen citizen members representing each of the County’s legislative districts who have expertise in the fields of health, education, social services, recreation and youth activities. public hearings for all to attend, and periodically requests data and program reports on the progress of the local youth service plans. The Youth Board’s main objective is to serve as an advisory committee to the Youth Bureau and its Director to better support youth development in Suffolk County. “Bryan is an outstanding advocate for our community,” said Lindsay III. “His experience working at Saint Joseph’s College and his tremendous efforts throughout Suffolk County will bring a fresh perspective to the board.” Upon graduation from Saint Joseph’s College with a Bachelor’s and Executive Master’s Degree in Business Administration and Management, Bryan went on to work at his alma-

mater, and currently serves as the Director of Student Activities & Co-Curricular Programs, Chairperson of the Freshman Year Experience; provides leadership training, and works as an advocate to improve campus life for all students. In addition, Bryan is the Director and Coordinator for Intramurals, an Adjunct Lecturer, and an Instructor for the Continuing Education program at the college. “Bryan’s exceptional leadership skills are demonstrated through all of his efforts,” said Lindsay III. “I am excited to work closely with him to better serve our young people and ensure that they have the resources necessary to excel here on Long Island.”

Islip Animal Shelter and Adopt-a-Pet Center’s annual Adopt-a-thon fundraiser, held recently at the Shelter, located at 210 S. Denver Avenue in Bay Shore, was a huge success this year, where four dogs and three cats were adopted, and four more dogs were reunited with their owners. An additional 12 applications for adoption were filed and are pending review. Islip Supervisor Tom Croci, along with New York State Senator Phil Boyle, Islip Town Clerk Olga Murray and Islip’s Receiver of Taxes Alexis Weik, all showed their support at this year’s Adopt-a-thon, encouraging the public to adopt and help save a life. “The Town of Islip has a great reputation of finding forever homes for homeless and in-need animals, and that is something we are truly proud of,” said Supervisor Croci. The animal shelter also offered micro-chipping

to dog and cat owners for a $25 fee. Sixteen dogs and one cat were microchipped, which raised $425. Town Clerk Olga Murray encouraged all to keep a close eye on their pets and take the proper measures to keep them safe. “All dogs in the Town of Islip need to be licensed and should also be wearing their collar and ID tags at all times. Even the most well behaved pet can get out of the house. Microchipping is an additional service to help keep your pet safe and is just one more way to help the shelter employees locate you when your dog or cat is lost or missing,” said Clerk Murray. This year’s Adopt-a-thon was sponsored by Live. Love.Bark Dog Rescue, who raised an additional $650.00 from donations and raffle ticket sales, to benefit the shelter. Live. Love.Bark also paid a portion of the adoption

fees for three out of the four dogs adopted, who had been waiting for their forever home for more than six months. Volunteers spent their day working the raffle tables, merchandise tables, and showing off the adoptable dogs by walking them down the doggie red carpet for all to see. “All of the shelter employees, volunteers, and vendors really came together to make this event a big success. It’s so evident that we all share the same goal; to get these amazing, but unfortunate animals into happy and stable forever homes,” said Receiver of Taxes Alexis Weik. More than four thousand Long Islanders are expected to join the American Heart Association’s Long Island Heart Walk on Sunday, September 21st to raise funds to fight heart disease and stroke, America’s No. 1 and No. 4 killers. The annual event begins at 8:30 a.m. at Jones Beach, Field 5 in Wantagh.
