Back To School How Volunteering Benefits Students Volunteering is often seen through the lens of how volunteers help to improve their communities. Though there’s no denying the valuable role volunteers play in strengthening their communities, it’s worth noting just how much volunteers can benefit from donating their time and effort to worthy causes.

The National Association of Colleges and Employers reports that employers expect to hire 7.2 percent more new college graduates from the class of 2021 than they did from the class of 2020. That’s encouraging news, but recent graduates will still face stiff competition as they look for their first job. Volunteering with an organization in their field can be a great way for current students and recent graduates to get their foot in the door. Even if a volunteering opportunity does not

ultimately lead to a job offer, the experience students gain can help them stand out in a crowded pool of job applicants down the road.

Bubble Palooza & Color Fun Run Festival At The Long Island Sports Park, Calverton Bubble Palooza invites the public to participate in Bubble Palooza & Color Fun Run Festival on August 21, 2021 at The Long Island Sports Park in Calverton, New York. Bubble Palooza is 50% run, 50% festival plus 100% family-fun! This reinvented 5K is mapped for 1K, allowing the participant to choose the length of their run up to 5K. Members are assigned to various duties during public run days, which are typically scheduled for the second and last Sundays of each month from the middle of May through the end of October. The hours of operation during a public run day are 10:30AM-3PM. Some positions a member may be assigned are Ticket Booth Attendants, Ticket Takers, Station Masters and Souvenir Stand Attendants. Members are also encouraged to help out on scheduled “work days” with various tasks, such as landscaping and track work.

Almost everything you will see, ride on, or otherwise enjoy during your visit to Long Island Live Steamers was built, delivered, installed and maintained by their members. All of their members are volunteers and very few of them are professional machinists, most of them are hobbyists. The uniting interest for them lies in steam power, railroad and having fun! Tuesdays, Thursdays and Sundays are “scheduled” work days, where members come together and work on whatever needs to be done at that time. However, members can be found working on equipment and projects throughout their free time!

If you would like to attend the next public run day, it will take place on Sunday, August 29th. There is no charge for rides on public run days, however they accept donations of any size.

Those lists have looked similar for decades, but shopping for school supplies in the pandemic era may prove to be a unique experience.

Though hundreds of millions of adults and adolescents have now been vaccinated against COVID-19, there figures to be some lingering effects of the pandemic during the upcoming school year. That could affect which school supplies families buy in the weeks to come. Here’s a look at some of the latest trends. • A shift from physical stores: According to data from IBM’s U.S. Retail Index, the pandemic has accelerated a shift away from physical stores to digital shopping by about five years. Water safety should be a primary concern not just in the summer, but all year long. Being that it only takes a few inches of water for a child to drown, it is important for adults to be aware and remain updated on important water safety and its procedures to prevent drowning incidents from occurring. Suffolk County Legislator Nick Caracappa would like to provide the following recommendations to ensure a happy and safe summer for residents and their families. “Now that summer is in full swing, it is important for us all to remember these safety tips to prevent any unnecessary danger to children and adults alike,” stated Caracappa. The following tips are found on the cdc. gov website: Learn life-saving skills. Everyone should know the basics of swimming

(floating, moving through the water) and cardiopulmonary resuscitation (CPR). Fence it off. Install a four–sided isolation fence, with self– closing and self–latching gates, around backyard swimming pools. This can help keep children away from the area when they aren’t supposed to be swimming. Pool fences should completely separate the house and play area from the pool. Make life jackets a must. Make sure kids wear life jackets in and around natural bodies of water, such as lakes or the ocean, even if they know how to swim. Life jackets can be used in and around pools for weaker swimmers too. Be on the look out. When kids are in or near water (including bathtubs), closely supervise them at all times. Because drowning

A Summer Of Learning

Ninety in-person and remote students in grades K-5 in the South Country Central School District continued their learning in July by participating in the district’s Summer Reading and Math Program, an immersive and interactive curriculum of lessons and activities. “Students received learning instruction in a joyful atmosphere,” said Summer School Principal Victoria Williams. “We aimed to provide a meaningful and engaging experience.”

The three-week program featured group reading and math learning activities centered on the weekly themes of “Learning Is Our Superpower,” “Growing as We Learn” and “Aloha, We Are Learners.” Students also played games that incorporated movement, such as math hopscotch, and took part in exciting science, technology, engineering, art and math lessons. All students received lunch from Long Island Cares and were treated to props for the themed

days, provided through the generosity of donors, that included superhero masks, slap bracelets, sunglasses and glow sticks, as well as books and school supplies. The district also held a five-week academic summer program attended by 284 middle and high school students. Middle school students worked to improve their math, reading and writing skills, while high schoolers were afforded the opportunity to recoup credits.

When It’s Time To Call In A Tutor Busy schedules, hybrid learning and demanding coursework have affected students’ academic performance over the last year-plus. The months since a pandemic was declared in March of 2020 have been unlike any other, and confronting the academic challenges of the pandemic may have adversely affected some students’ grades. A recent report from the Fairfax County Public Schools Office of Research and Strategic Improvement in Virginia found the number of middle and high school students with two or more failing marks increased by 83 percent in the first quarter of the 2020-2021 school year compared to the year prior, but students’ grades may slide or they may find certain school work overly challenging even in normal years. Since many parents have not seen a periodic table or had to solve high school math problems in decades, tutors may be just what students need to regain their academic footing. That means even people who do not apply pesticides in their lawns and gardens can still be at risk of exposure to these potentially harmful chemicals.

People concerned by the prospect of being exposed to the pesticides being applied by their neighbors can stay indoors with their children and pets while the substances are being applied. Those who live near fields and parks where pesticides are routinely applied can plant hardy, thick-

branched trees to reduce their risk of airborne exposure. The EPA notes that such plants and shrubs can serve as buffers against airborne pesticides, essentially acting as walls around a property that prevent gusty winds from blowing pesticides into yards and gardens.

Students are perhaps the best reflection of that diversity, as even small schools are home to young people who excel in sports, music, theatre, and of course, academics. Many young people harbor a strong interest in the arts, which can provide some surprising benefits. For example, the National Endowment for the Arts reports that students with high arts participation and low socioeconomic status have a 4 percent dropout rate. That’s five times lower than their low socioeconomic status peers. In addition, a report from the Rice Kinder Institute for Urban Research found that arts education experiences reduce the proportion of students in school receiving disciplinary infractions by 3.6 percent. Despite the myriad benefits of participation in arts education, which can include improved

performance in the classroom, Americans for the Arts notes that not all students have access to art-based educational experiences. Parents of students who are interested in the arts can try various approaches to nurture those interests. • Support school-based arts education programs. Funding for arts programs is perpetually in jeopardy. Each state and school district is different, but a 2013 report from the National Association of State Boards of Education found that federal funding for arts and humanities programs totaled roughly $250 million a year, while the National Science Foundation received around $5 billion annually. Arts and sciences are both important, and parents can support legislation that directs more federal funding for the arts while urging local legislators to direct more money to arts education. • Make art a part of life at home. Americans for the Arts recommends that parents make the arts part of life at home.

Participating alongside children as they sing, dance, draw, play music or pursue other artsbased interests is a great way to incorporate the arts into home life while showing kids how fun the arts can be. • Research local performing arts schools. Children who exhibit an especially strong interest in the arts may benefit from enrolling in a school that specializes in performing arts. Such schools may be open to kids as young as five and extend all the way through high school. Some performing arts schools require prospective students to audition or apply. Arts high schools still offer instruction in core academic subjects, but parents should explore each school’s curriculum before deciding if a given school is right for their children. Arts education can have a profound impact on the life of a young person. There are many ways for parents to nurture and encourage their children’s interest in the arts.

New York Blood Center Announces A Blood Emergency New York Blood Center (NYBC) announces a blood shortage in the region, one year after New York was the epicenter of the pandemic. Before COVID-19, donors could stop by community blood drives at convenient locations like high schools, colleges, and offices. It has been one

year since these groups had to cancel their blood drives due to COVID-19 and few have been able to resume these lifesaving events. NYBC currently has a 4 day supply of blood, which is well below what is needed by area hospitals. New York’s healthcare system requires 1,500

donations each day to treat patients ranging from trauma victims to newborn babies and their mothers to cancer patients. Donors with type O and type B blood are especially needed as NYBC currently has a 1-2 day supply of these blood types. “With thousands of New Yorkers getting

vaccinated each day, we are thrilled to watch our state recover from this catastrophic year,” said Andrea Cefarelli, Senior Executive Director at New York Blood Center. “As New York bounces back in strides this spring, we need everyone to make an appointment and donate blood to help save lives. While the

end of the pandemic is near, our struggle to fight for those in need continues.” We are taking extra precautions to help prevent the personto-person spread of COVID-19. As always, people are not eligible to donate if they’re experiencing a cold, sore throat, respiratory

Is It Safe To Donate Blood During The Pandemic? Donating blood is a selfless act that saves lives. Blood donors may recognize the vital role they play in patient care, but many may wonder if it’s safe to donate blood during

the pandemic. According to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, it is safe for anyone who is well to donate blood. That even goes for people who are social distancing due

to COVID-19. The CDC has recommended various safety measures to ensure the safety of donors and donation center volunteers and staff members. Such measures include spacing

donor chairs at least six feet apart and encouraging donors to make donation appointments ahead of time. Appointments can ensure donors are not spending more time at the donation

center than is absolutely necessary, reducing the likelihood that they have contact with someone who may have COVID-19 but not know it. The Red Cross notes it has instituted

additional safety protocols, such as laundering blankets used by donors after each use and requiring all donors and staff to wear face coverings or masks during the donation process.

Patchogue Theatre To Reopen At 100% Capacity Patchogue Theatre for the Performing Arts announced its reopening plans & COVID-19 guidelines for 2021. After more than a year of “intermission,” Patchogue Theatre will resume its main stage programming at 100% capacity beginning in September. As of May 19, New York State has adopted CDC guidelines which allow for venues to operate at 100% capacity with no social distancing. The Theater has 1,106 seats. Mask mandates have been lifted, but unvaccinated individuals are still required to wear a mask. However, it’s possible that guidelines can change by September. More information about the theatre’s safety guidelines and upgrades can be found on the website at PatchogueTheatre.org. This summer, Patchogue Theatre has been presenting free, small-scale performances under its marquee for attendees of Patchogue Chamber of Commerce’s Sundown Festival on Main Street. As part of its new “Emerging Artist Series,” funded by the County of Suffolk, the first performance was on July 22nd featuring local singer/songwriter Dave March. The next performance will take place on August 19th featuring Pete Mancini. Patchogue Theatre’s grand reopening will take place on Friday, September 24th preceding The Moondog’s performance of The Beatles White Album. The celebration continues on Saturday, September 25th with the SiriusXM comedy tour Kreeps With Kids featuring four dads with a shared philosophy on parenting. October begins with the Michael Jackson tribute show I Am King on Friday, October 1st, a benefit for The Andrew McMorris Foundation, followed by the platinum-selling 90s band Toad The Wet Sprocket on Saturday, October 2nd. Up next is The Official Blues Brothers Revue in association with Dan Aykroyd, Judith Belushi, and musical director Paul Shaffer, on Saturday, October 8th. Motown Memories on Saturday, October 30th will celebrate the music of Sam Cooke and Marvin Gaye. Island Symphony Orchestra presents its fall concert on Sunday, November 7th. Then on Saturday, November 13th, Hammer of the Gods brings its ultimate Led Zeppelin experience to the theatre followed by Grammy-winning guitarist Pat Metheny’s Side-Eye tour with pianist James Francies and drummer Joe

Dyson, produced in conjunction with The Bowery Presents, on Sunday, November 14th. The Linda Ronstadt Experience, featuring American Idol star Tristan McIntosh, is on Friday, November 19th and Patchogue Theatre’s new comedy series Jokes on Main premieres on Friday, November 26th with comedians Julia Scotti, Billy Garan, Buddy Fitzpatrick and Mike Burton. For the holidays, Patchogue Theatre will present the holiday rock event The Wizards on Winter on Saturday, November 27th and founding member of Cherish the Ladies and musical star of Riverdance, Eileen Ivers’ Joyful Christmas on Friday, December 10th. Before kicking off its main stage season, the theatre will host The Gateway’s production of Disney’s Newsies followed by Patchogue’s

3rd Annual Hispanic Heritage Celebration. Then, the Gateway returns in December with their Holiday Spectacular on Ice. While most shows on the schedule are rescheduled performances from 2020, there are several new shows being presented for the 2021-2022 season.
