Marching band students from Connetquot High School got a jump-start on the upcoming performance season as they learned how to properly execute marching band drills and how to walk in formation during an evening summer camp held during the first week of August. Under the leadership
of Gregory Johnson, marching band director, the students were engaged in a range of activities specifically designed to promote collaboration. “In addition to the music component, the marching band members are learning about teamwork, comradery and how to work together,” he said.
“In addition, the program enables the incoming freshman students the opportunity to meet 240 fellow band members before officially starting high school.” The high school’s marching band is the single largest organization within the entire district.
New Solar Telescope
Visitors to the Suffolk County Vanderbilt Museum’s Reichert Planetarium can now view the Sun through a new solar telescope. The Planetarium has just installed a Lunt Solar Systems hydrogen-alpha solar telescope in the Observatory – for daytime observation of the Sun. Dave Bush, the Planetarium’s technical and production coordinator, and an astronomy educator, said the solar telescope is mounted “piggy back” onto the 16-inch Meade reflecting telescope in order to track the Sun across the sky. “The refractor-style telescope with its 80-milimeter optical aperture gives us sharp detail and contrast of MARCHING INTO THE NEW YEAR - Connetquot High School students took features on the surface part in a weeklong marching band camp. When electrons within the hydrogen atoms absorb energy and rise to a higher energy level then fall back to their original orbits, light is emitted at a particular wavelength that can be seen with the specialized telescope.” “Typically, telescopic views of objects in outer space rarely change before our eyes in real-time,” Bush said. “However, on a day when the Sun is particularly active we can watch features on the Sun evolve before our eyes while looking through an H-alpha telescope! “The sun is dynamic and alive. Sometimes the loops extend thousands of miles into space. The lighter spots and streaks are called plages, the French word for beaches, and are, appropriately hot spots or bright emissions caused by emerging flux regions associated with the magnetic field of the Sun. The tiny hair-like lines that extend from the surface are spicules. These are jets of hot gas that can rise up to 6,000 miles high. Most last only 15 minutes before morphing into new spicules.

There are about 13 teaspoons of sugar in a can of cola. Hearing that information and actually seeing what thirteen teaspoons of sugar looks like really makes the difference when you are trying to make an impact on people. Island Harvest volunteers Maria and Samantha visited the students at Eastern Suffolk BOCES Bellport Academic Center (BAC) during
“When you read the side of a soda can and see 33 or 69 grams of sugar, what does that really mean to you? It doesn’t register with people until they see a visual presentation,” said Maria. The students counted aloud as each teaspoon of sugar was placed in a glass. Their faces were expressionless as they counted, ‘One, two, three, four’, but when they started getting up to ten, eleven, twelve teaspoons, and Maria and Samantha told them to keep counting, there was astonishment and disbelief on their faces and in their voices. “The visual of all that sugar makes people stop and think. Is there really that much sugar in my beverage? Seeing is believing!” said Maria. Maria and Samantha talked to the students about MyPlate, a practical guide to help individuals choose a healthy diet.

HomeGrown Change, along with the Greater Patchogue Foundation, hosted Island to Table, an exclusive dinner prepared by talented local chefs to highlight the bounty of Long Island, on Sunday, July 31st, resulting in $8,000 to support local community gardening and sustainability projects. Island to Table included a cocktail hour and a sixcourse, sit-down meal incorporating ingredients from Long Island’s many farms and fisheries and created by Patchogue chefs Jim Klein from Perabell Food Bar; Richard Lanza from Ristegio’s; Lauren Lombardi from Lombardi’s on the Bay; Hirbin Manzanares from South Ocean Grill and Elmer Rubio from Chachama Grill. St. Joseph’s College and Suffolk Community College students and faculty served the courses to diners and Roast Coffee & Tea Trading Company donated and served the coffee and tea in branded coffee mugs for the event. The live music was provided

Our neighborhoods will benefit from the generosity of many.” In August 2015, HomeGrown Change, an all-volunteer organization, was established to teach gardening and sustainability to schools and intergenerational community groups. Since its inception, HomeGrown
Change has developed a year-long program for the United Way’s YouthBuild Program which includes bi-weekly classes for 18to 25-year-old students that teach traditional and hydroponic methods, and incorporate nutrition and healthy-living. HomeGrown Change donated plants and seeds to the Bellport Community Garden where its board members monitor the crops and teach nutrition using the harvested produce. The money raised from Island to Table will support the transformation of Medford Elementary School’s existing concrete and brick courtyard into a children’s learning garden and create a pollinator and native plant garden with young adults at the new Carnegie Library, both in Patchogue. To all those fellow concertgoers, I have a question: why are you attending these shows? Because, by all indications, it is not to sit back and actually listen to the music being played before you. At first, I thought it may have been an isolated case; but the last several performances I have attended have only served to solidify my perception that no one is paying attention. Mind you, I’m not referring to the popular free summer concert series that pop up all over the area, the ones that encourage you to bring your own seating and refreshments and enjoy a picnic-like atmosphere with your family and friends. I’m talking about
the amphitheater-style shows that you most likely paid pretty good money to see. First off, I understand that the scheduled opening acts may not be the main attraction, but still – it would be nice to throw a little support behind today’s up-and-coming artists. Who knows what they may go on to achieve in a few years. Secondly, once the headliner hits the stage, why would you feel the need to spend the better part of their performance taking selfies, scrolling through Instagram, Snapchat, Facebook… oh, and let’s not forget the art of chasing Pokémon. You are here. You don’t need to inform every single one of your friends of that fact. Just sit back and enjoy it. Appreciate the talent before you. Sure,
you may want to snap a photo or two, maybe record a short video of your favorite number; but, beyond that, I don’t understand the need to be preoccupied by everything other than that entertainment which you paid to see. Whatever happened to the days of lighters in the air and hands clapping along, of singing the chorus in unison with 15,000 of your closest friends and being present in the moment? I’m pretty sure that, even with all of today’s technological advances, the basic concept of appreciating your surroundings has not gone out of style. Perhaps we should all make an effort to get back in touch with this principle. I’ll let you know how tonight’s concert goes. Via Facebook, of course ;)

A new picture version of the game Bingo was created at Eastern Suffolk BOCES Brookhaven Learning Center as a learning tool for the students to learn about the different sports and symbols related to the Olympic Games in Brazil. “Each number on the Bingo square was replaced
with a symbol related to the Olympics from SymbolStix,” said Speech Teacher Kerri Oman. The game still had the “FREE” center square, and the students still had to get five in a row on their card to win. SymbolStix is a webbased symbol search
engine through Unique Learning System, an online standards-based set of interactive tools specifically designed for students with special needs. Oman used Microsoft PowerPoint to create slides using symbols from SymbolStix that depicted swimming, biking, fencing, playing soccer, tennis, and other sports in the Olympics or symbols related to the Olympics like the five Olympic rings, gold medals, a stadium, and pieces of equipment that would be used in competitions like gymnastics. In addition to the students learning about the nations participating in the Olympic Games in Rio and the sports, the students applied the skills they are learning associated with socializing and good sportsmanship.

Alex Lopez, Assistant Professor of Occupational Therapy at Touro College School of Health Sciences, was the recipient of honorary awards and recognitions recently for his initiatives and contributions to several Long Island organizations that provide services for atrisk youth and people with disabilities. At a 50th anniversary gala, Prof. Lopez was presented with the Mental Health Educational Award by State Senator Thomas Croci, on behalf of Adelante of Suffolk County - a multiservice community resource center - and Southside Hospital of Bay Shore.
Prof. Lopez is experienced in psychosocial practice and pediatric physical rehabilitation and has developed programs on treating Autism Spectrum Disorder (ASD) through sensory integration and occupational therapy (OT). He is the Founder and Executive Director of Inclusive Sports and Fitness, Inc. an alternative after-school sports program for children with disabilities. “The award from Adelante is special because Adelante is a significant force for therapeutic justice, health promotion, and wellness for underrepresented communities,” said Prof. Lopez, adding, “I was humbled by their recognition and proud to be part of the efforts and contributions they have made to the mental health community in Suffolk County.” Prof. Lopez also received an award and acknowledgement from the Town of Islip Youth Bureau for his work as
Founder and Executive Director of PAR FORE, an integrated gang prevention mentor program utilizing OT, cognitive behaviorism, social justice, and psychology to serve children and teens in New York, New Jersey, and Utah. He is currently working with Touro to establish another chapter in Nevada. A graduate of Kean University and New England Law School, Prof. Lopez is a licensed occupational therapist, an attorney, and an Army veteran. He has provided pro bono therapy and advocacy services for Adelante and Suffolk Independent Living Organization since 2009. Prof. Stephanie DapiceWong, Chair of the Occupational Therapy Dept. at Touro College, lauded Prof. Lopez for his formidable contributions to public service. “I am pleased and proud that Dr. Lopez’s service and important contributions have been honored with these awards,” she said.
