Recently a 4-week session hosted by The Social Brain and Peconic Speech Services in Riverhead started to help survivors learn social skills, build friendships, find cues from others and interact with peers. The first session was on August 6th and the following 2 sessions will be on August 20th and 27th. Age groups are broken down from ages 5-7, 8-12, teens and adults. Additionally, in only two days (on August 16th), The Social Brain will host a “Basket Night Fundraiser” at the Sound Beach Property Owners Association at 6:30PM! The Social Brain is a brand new 501(c)(3) non profit in the state of New York. They are on the brink of breaking through as one of the most unique and helpful organizations that serves those suffering from a brain injury. Their mission is to provide brain injury survivors the opportunity to build friendships through socialization and reduced isolation. This organization began in January 2019 when a group of individuals, families and professionals joined together to brainstorm ideas of how they can help brain injury survivors socialize and partake in various hobbies together. Many survivors spend much of their lives in and out of rehab and home feeling isolated, but The Social Brain formed to change that. After hosting various events for survivors such as a day at Sweetbriar Nature Center, a Bowling Event, a Library Day and an afternoon at Four Star Ranch, it was obvious that they were reaching a population in need. Just last month, The Social Brain was granted 501(c)(3) status in the state of New York and they have just started working out of a community center located at 202 Middle Country Road in Middle Island. The Social Brain operates solely on volunteers and their outreach comes not only from word of mouth, but from help through their recent partnerships with local hospitals, school districts, neurology departments, Peconic Speech Services in Riverhead and St. Joseph’s College. Survivors from all over Long Island are welcome to get involved with The Social Brain. On average, each event they host has about 30-40 participates and there is no age restrictions.

On Tuesday, July 16 the Connetquot Public Library hosted its second Summer Garden Tea Party. With a slight breeze, under the afternoon sun, high tea was served on the library lawn. The table decorations were in seasonal hues and there was a colorful array of teapots. Keeping with the practice, some of the attendees wore fancy hats, but all came to partake in a celebration of English tradition. Iced tea and lemonade, Irish
tea, sandwiches, and sweets were shared, and acquaintances had the opportunity to become friends. All were invited to bring a seasonal summer recipe or one from their childhood. With humor and nostalgia, recipes and recollections were shared with the group. Recipes are to be compiled into a booklet for all who attended. The most rewarding aspects of the gathering were the spontaneous
conversations and acquisition of new connections and memories. With meticulous attention to detail and style, librarians Janet Eagan and Susan Altman hosted this enjoyable and enchanting afternoon. According to Cicero “If you have a garden and a library, you have everything you need.” Having others to share it with makes the experience all the more rewarding!

STUDENTS BECOME ONE WITH NATURE - First grade students enrolled in Keri Farrell’s class at Idle Hour Elementary School recently put on a stunning performance of the play, “Bugz,” for attending family members and kindergarten students alike. Under direction of music teacher Kelly Daugherty and Mrs. Farrell, the students spent months rehearsing their lines and perfecting their choreography before putting on the big performance for all to see. The play featured a beautiful set design, eye-popping costumes and a number of songs which showcased both the students’ vocal abilities and humorous nature. Prior to the big premiere, the students visited The Arbors Assisted Living Facility at Bohemia to treat their “Grandfriends” to a special performance of the show. Academy students at Milliken Technical Center recently participated in a post-car accident scene that was created for the Law Enforcement students to properly manage a multi-person casualty, and for the Medical Assisting students to perform triage on numerous victims. The Eastern Long Island Academy of Applied Technology is the Career and Technical Education Program of Eastern Suffolk BOCES and has campuses in Bellport, Oakdale, and Riverhead.
The accident scene aftermath was orchestrated in a parking lot at the school and involved a twocar collision. Volunteer victims sporting special effects makeup positioned themselves in the cars and on the ground. Some of the victims utilized prosthetic wounds for classmates in the Medical Assisting Program to bandage. Law Enforcement students took witness statements from classmates acting as passersby, made arrests, practiced crowd control, and learned to create an
accident scene. Cosmetology students created special effects makeup so accident victims looked authentic, Auto Body students supplied the damaged cars, and a member of the Suffolk County Police Department visited to provide on-thescene advice to students. Said Sandra Lochren, Law Enforcement Teacher, “This event teaches students to expect the unexpected and how to think and respond appropriately in difficult situations.”

Solder joined together more than wires during the Build It Forward Project at Sachem High Schools East and North as students worked collaboratively with the Sachem Public Library to assemble a pair of 3D printers constructed of mostly 3D printed parts. The yearlong collaborative effort created an important community connection in which the Sachem Public Library aided students in the assembly of a fully functional 3D printer. Working to construct individual printing devices, 3D Printing students at High School North and Computer Repair Technician students at High School East conferred with library staff as they referenced plans and printed parts of the printer on a 3D printer they had in the classroom.
The Connetquot Business Advisory Council recently hosted the inaugural Mock Interview Day in an effort to fully prepare students for authentic interviews once they begin to step forward toward their desired career paths.
