housing inventory to more than 10,300 beds, making Stony Brook University the largest campus housing program in SUNY. (Phase II is anticipated to start construction in December this year.) The new facility on John S. Toll Drive, will feature two modern buildings. Phase I will consist of a 303 bed residence hall and Phase II with 456 beds, adjacent to the first. The units, comprised predominantly of suites with four single bedrooms, will each have a living room and two bathrooms. The facilities will be fully air conditioned, with individual thermostatic controls, and will offer high-speed wired and wireless internet access and a range of other amenities, providing a higher standard of oncampus living. The dining portion of the project will replace nearly all food service venues currently located in the Stony Brook Union, allowing for the conversion of the Union to a dedicated Student Services Center. On July 17th, a presentation titled “Alzheimer’s Disease What You Need to Know” took place at the Jewish Center of the Hamptons in East Hampton. Guest speakers included Mary Ann Malack-Ragona, Executive Director/CEO, Alzheimer’s Disease Resource Center, Inc. (ADRC), and Susan L. Solomon, Chief Executive Officer and CoFounder, and Dr. Scott Noggle, Charles Evans Senior Research Fellow for Alzheimer’s Disease, The New York Stem Cell Foundation. In her presentation, Ms. Malack-Ragona discussed the facts and myths surrounding Alzheimer’s disease. Other topics included the warning signs of AD, updates on local research and national research, the essentials of long-term care planning and how ADRC can assist local families. Ms. Solomon and Dr. Noggle updated those in the audience on the latest research involving stem cells in finding a cure for AD. In addition to her work with NYSCF, Ms. Solomon

The Alzheimer’s Disease Resource Center, Inc. is pleased to announce its 3rd Annual Walk For Alzheimer’s and Clambake. “We are delighted that Atlantis Marine World will once again host this spectacular event for the third consecutive year,” states Mary Ann MalackRagona, ADRC Executive Director/CEO and creator of ADRC’s Walk For Alzheimer’s events. “For our 2014 Walk we have moved Registration, Continental Breakfast & Opening Ceremonies inside to the Sea Star Banquet Hall in an effort to provide a more comfortable experience for our Walk participants. Joining us for Opening Ceremonies, as in past years, will be the Liberty Bells members of the New York USO Troupe. In addition, there will be a special Hope Garden Ceremony, and a new, longer Walk route.” Participants raising $100 or more per person will receive a Walk lunch tote,
Walk T-shirt, and will be admitted to ADRC’s Annual Clambake. Admission to the Clambake also includes admission to the Aquarium where visitors will spend the afternoon with penguins, otters, exotic fish, sharks, sea lions, butterflies and birds. R e g i s t r a t i o n / Continental Breakfast begins at 8:30 a.m.; Opening Ceremonies start promptly at 10:00 a.m. At 11:00 a.m. Kevin the Penguin will help cut the ribbon at the Walk Ribbon Cutting Ceremonies. Suffolk County Community College culinary students relax after a day conjuring delectable Italian delights in Florence, Italy this summer where the students honed their culinary skills under the guidance of renowned Chef
Andrea Trapani, among others, Executive chef and the culinary and baking department head of Apicius International School of Hospitality. The students’ days were filled with class study during a four-weeklong program, and they
also interned at a local restaurant and bakery and visited Parma and Modena the birthplaces of parmesan cheese and balsamic vinegar. While in Modena and Parma, they visited local production facilities of the two Italian kitchen staples.

O’Neill. “While we are able to assist many of our homeless clients through our Client Benefit programs, the Stand Up for the Homeless event is intended to educate and serve the ineligible or recalcitrant visible homeless with informational referrals, community based resources, and items utilized while homeless. The Department of Social Services is proud to be beside County Executive Bellone, St. Joseph’s College and our community based partners in presenting this event.” As has been done in the past, Long Island Cares and Island Harvest will provide attendees with bags of food, while an additional food drive will be coordinated by The Patchogue Lions Club. St. Vincent de Paul will coordinate a clothing drive. Free transportation to and from the event will be supplied throughout the day from multiple locations around the county. Last year, more than 70 vendors offered free services to more than 400 individuals and families, but we are expecting many more this year. The Long Island Campus of St. Joseph’s College (SJC) is pleased to announce that it will provide a venue for the seventh annual Stand Up for the Homeless event, sponsored by the Office of the Suffolk County Executive, on Friday, August 29th, in the John A. Danzi Athletic Center from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. This is the sixth year that the event will be held at the College. “Dedicated to fostering committed participation in its local and global communities, St. Joseph’s College is pleased to once again host this valuable community initiative in conjunction with the County Executive’s Office,” said Jack P. Calareso, Ph.D., president of SJC. The annual Stand Up for the Homeless event allows individuals in attendance to gain access to free services and products offered by federal, state, county and private agencies - including health, employment, financial, housing, educational and benefit services - all in one location. Services provided will include health and dental screenings, housing and shelter placement, employment opportunities, free haircuts, a clothing drive and public assistance counseling. The blood pressure and health screenings that were provided at previous events resulted in a handful of attendees receiving vital, immediate care that they may not have otherwise received. “The mission of the Department of Social Services is to provide financial assistance and support services to eligible Suffolk County residents in a cost effective and efficient manner, simultaneously protecting the vulnerable while encouraging their independence and selfsufficiency,” said Suffolk

The summer solstice opens upon her arrival, evaporating the morning’s dew. The rays of sun awaken by her movement, comforting the Earth with her warmth. All the living turn their heads to bask in her warm embrace. The plants mature in her wake, learning the meaning of life. The menacing clouds take over, their footsteps in sync. Like soldiers they march on and on, without pause. They throw spears of light down showing their force, watching for reactions. Some mortals cower in fear, while some dare to stand against it. Like an olive branch extended, tendrils of pinks and purples streak the sky, tearing the blue. Good wins over evil, a predetermined win. Like a spell cast everything lies tranquil, waiting to dance with the stars. Her sudden temper flares, rolling down her back in waves. Her teardrops comes in waterfalls, mingling with the mundane. Fierce is her reign, until scolded by Father Time. Like a child in the corner, she loses her grip. At the end, summers right hand man, sets in a fiery blaze.

Coming Events Around Town
Charles Baack is a 98 years ‘young ‘ WWII Navy Veteran who has lived in Holbrook since he was born in his family’s house on July 29th, 1916. He attended and graduated from Sayville High School in the Class of 1934. Later Charlie was married to his wife Anne for 57 years having one son; Kevin lives in Maine with his wife & daughter Suzanne. During WWII, Charlie served aboard an LST (Landing Ship Tank) as an Engineer. His ship participated in many campaigns landing Navy & Marines on enemy held islands. Charlie Baack served proudly in the US Navy helping to win the War in the Pacific. He
and his shipmates were part of “The Greatest Generation”. After the war, Charlie got married and eventually started his own business installing hard wood floors in Patchogue. Charlie has served in the US Coast Guard Auxiliary for the past 40 years and was a Charter Member of Sayville Flotilla 1-7. Three years ago Charlie sold his Patrol Boat which he operated on weekends keeping boaters safe patrolling the Great South Bay. He continues to perform duties at Coast Guard Station Fire Island and drives there every Wednesday assisting his fellow ‘Coasties’, as needed. Thanks to Alina Rossi

and Frank Grasso of the Sayville Rotary, Charlie Baack was honored as their first ‘Veteran of the Month’ at their monthly meeting at Land’s End Restaurant. He had an extra surprise when Master Chief Chad Wendt, the Officer in Charge of Station Fire Island appeared and spoke about Charlie’s legendary exploits. On behalf of Charlie Baack, a ‘BIG THANK YOU’ to the members of the Sayville Rotary and Alina Rossi (Sayville. com), the new President of the Sayville Rotary, for honoring Veterans of the Greater Sayville Communities at their monthly meetings at Land’s End.
In 2006, Jamie Mas played the part of Charlie in Willy Wonka and the Chocolate Factory, Kids For Kids production, in his first acting role. He is also well known for being the “Little Caddie Boy” model, pictured on the 2009 U.S. Open (Bethpage Black Course) golf poster. Jamie is now a Sayville High School Senior, trying to help kids across the nation, participating as a cast member in the Fall Tour of the performing arts All Access Productions Company’s bullying and violence prevention program. This past Spring, he served as a vital member of the program and worked tirelessly on and off stage to bring this life-saving message to over 5,000 plus students across Long Island. He said “I am glad to be part of this group, because it can help so many kids struggling with
depression and bullying.” The Fall Tour musical production of No More Victims that Jamie Mas will be performing in, addresses bullying, cyber bullying, teen violence, peer pressure and poor self image. All the actors are not paid and strictly volunteers. Jamie needs to raise $3,000 by September to pay for transportation, food, lodging and tour production costs, while on tour to Orlando, Florida, this Fall. He will be away three and a half months, and home schooling himself while on tour, in order to graduate from high school next June. Jamie is having a yard sale fund raiser, on August 16th and 17th, from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. at 253 Sayville Boulevard in Sayville to pay for his tour expenses. Donations and yard sale items can be dropped off at

Bradstock Set Camp Pa-Qua-Tuck will be presenting Bradstock XXI, a two-day festival featuring live music and poetry that will be taking place on Saturday, August 30th, from noon to 8 p.m. and Sunday, August 31st from noon to 9 p.m. Now in its 21st year, Bradstock is an all-day music festival featuring the best musical acts performing Americana, bluegrass, blues, reggae, jams, funk, rock and jazz. Among those who will be performing include Cassandra House, Gerry McKeveney, Soundswell, Jack’s Waterfall,
Miles to Dayton, Jerry McDonald, Ed Travers, Shecky and the Twangtones, David Amram, Funkin’A, Jelly Band, Falco Brothers and The Electrix. In addition, there will be a Poetry Stage featuring the area’s finest and most diverse poets and a Folk and Songwriters’ stage featuring the best local musical talent. Tickets are $35 for the first day ($45 day of event), $50 for the second day ($60 day of event) and $80 for both days. Prices include admission to the festival. Cash will only be accepted for ticket purchases
on the days of the event. Ticket prices do not include tax. For $125 plus tax, concertgoers can purchase the Platinum package ahead of the event. This includes admission to both days of the festival (including overnight camping on Saturday), a Bradstock T-shirt, backstage access and more. Camping sites and T-shirts are limited, so early registration is strongly recommended. In the event that there are remaining tickets, they can be purchased at the door for
$150 (plus tax). Tickets for Saturday’s festival and the 5K Trail Run are available for $40 plus tax when purchased by August 22nd, $50 on the day of registration (cash only). VIP Platinum members who register on the day of the race pay $5 (cash only). The race begins at 8:30 a.m. All entrants receive a commemorative Bradstock mug. Part of the ticket sales will go to benefit Camp Pa-QuaTuck. Over the past four years, Bradstock has raised over $30,000 for the camp.
The music festival has a special connection to the camp as the late Kevin “K.C.” Cowan — who performed at every single Bradstock event with his band, K.C. and The Love Drops, before his passing on October 2011 — was the brother-in-law of Bridget Costello, Director, Camp PaQua-Tuck. Camp Pa-Qua-Tuck is a resident summer camp serving children and young adults ages 6-21 with both physical and developmental special needs. Its mission is to help these children to
