Long Island Cruizin’ For a Cure will hold its 12th annual Car Show at 1400 Old Country Road in Westbury, a new location for the nonprofit organization. The show will be Sunday, September 10 from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m. It is the only car show on the East Coast to offer men free onsite PSA screening tests for early detection of Prostate Cancer. A special program at noon will highlight the success of the nonprofit car show and the presentation of a check to Winthrop-University Hospital for prostate cancer research. Long Island Cruizin’ For A Cure promises to be a family-centered fun day. Back by popular demand will be STARDUST and the Food Court. Free features include a KIDZ FUN ZONE with radio controlled model race car track. Cruizin’ For A Cure, organized by Prostate Cancer survivors and community volunteers in 2006, is dedicated to raising funds for Prostate Cancer research, education and early detection. Since its founding Cruizin’ has donated more than $120,000 to WinthropUniversity Hospital and Cold Spring Harbor Laboratory for research. A huge crowd will be attracted once again to the Lee Iaccoca Foundation Award winning car show, where more than 450 cars and vehicles are expected to be exhibited. Sponsors include Champion Motors, AutoQuip, Alure Home Improvement, Rallye Motor Group, Robert Chevrolet and Trinity Solar, with more sponsors to come. There will be a dedicated tent where the PSA Prostate Cancer screening tests will be conducted FREE by Winthrop-University Hospital. Volunteers wearing grey “Survivor” LI Cruizin’ t-shirts will be encouraging men at the show to take advantage of the onsite free blood-
screening tests. To date over 3,000 men have been screened at Cruizin’ For A Cure car shows and 148 of them with elevated PSA readings have been referred to their physicians for follow-up. “Last year 345 free PSA screening tests were conducted. Once again we plan to make a concerted effort to encourage men to take advantage of the free screening test. It will be a fabulous day with exhibitors, a KIDS FUN ZONE, entertainment, vendors and sponsors. This will be our first year at the 1400 Old Country location, a slightly smaller location but vehicles will be parked on cement rather than dirt – a plus for the show participants. “Our volunteers, many of whom are Prostate Cancer survivors like me, are finalizing plans for a show that will delight people of all ages. The show’s popularity has been sustained because it offers something for everyone, not just car enthusiasts,” said Sandy Kane, Chair and Founder of LI Cruizin’ For A Cure Car Show. The September 10 car show promises to be a fun-filled family-friendly day. For car collectors and vehicle enthusiasts it’s all about rods, customs, muscle and classic cars, specialty vehicles, antique fire apparatus and motorcycles. Perhaps my favorite space of all, though, is my little outdoor deck. While the view consists mainly of a parking lot and other surrounding apartments, I have made it my mission to fill the area with plants in every corner, twinkly white lights, solar garden ornaments - and of course my aqua-colored Adirondack chairs, the perfect accessory for all seasons. Many a summer day has been spent lounging here, listening to the sounds of birds chirping in the nearby tree, squirrels scurrying to and fro and watching the sun’s glow rise and fall as the hours pass. Living on Long Island… it ain’t for everyone, to be sure but I wouldn’t have it any other way.

My Little Corner of LI are some perks you simply can’t put a price on. As often as I think I am paying way too much to live in my one bedroom apartment, when I take a look at the pristine grounds surrounding me, I realize I wouldn’t have it any other way. Two patients treated for potentially lifethreatening brain aneurysms will tell their stories when the Brain Aneurysm Center at Northwell Health’s Neuroscience Institute, along with the Brain Aneurysm Foundation (BAF), host Long Island’s 9th annual Brain Aneurysm Awareness Four-Mile Fun Run/TwoMile Walk at Jones Beach State Park on Saturday, September 23rd. Proceeds from the walk will benefit Northwell Health’s Brain Aneurysm Center and the BAF, helping support essential research into how to help prevent cases of ruptured aneurysms. The walk will feature two women – Terry Bongiorno, 53, from New Hyde Park, NY and Kathleen Smith, 63, from Westbury – who will share their accounts of early

diagnosis and treatment. Hundreds of walkers – including brain aneurysm survivors, their families and friends – are expected to attend the fun-filled event. Doctors, nurses and staff members from Northwell Health’s Brain Aneurysm Center will also be on hand to show their support for the many patients they have treated over the years. Among those who will be attending are David Chalif, MD, and Avi Setton, MD, co-directors of Northwell Health’s Brain Aneurysm Center. “One of the goals of this annual event is to increase awareness about the warning signs of a brain aneurysm,” said Dr. Chalif. “The symptoms can include severe headache, nausea, blurred or double vision, stiff neck or neck pain, pain above or behind the eye and loss of sensation.” Four years ago, Ms. Bongiorno experienced severe headaches and knew at the time that it could be a sign of a brain aneurysm. Her mother passed away of a brain aneurysm when Ms. Bongiorno was a toddler. Family members told Ms. Bongiorno that her mother complained of severe headaches prior to the fatal aneurysm. Decades later, when Ms. Bongiorno started to experience headaches herself, she knew that she should get screened. A magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) scan revealed a brain aneurysm, and while it was small and would normally be left alone to be monitored over time, she was told to see a specialist because of her family history. Upon reviewing the MRI scan, Dr. Chalif explained that due to her family history, the aneurysm should be closely monitored for any changes in development. Ms. Bongiorno went for annual follow-ups over
the next few years, but it wasn’t until August 2016 when growth was detected through a computed axial tomography (CAT) scan. Dr. Chalif clipped the aneurysm, cutting off blood flow to the artery in an October 2016 procedure. Clipping a brain aneurysm is a surgical procedure performed on both ruptured and unruptured aneurysms. The neurosurgeon works through a small opening in the skull, and once the aneurysm is located with the operating microscope, the neurosurgeon eliminates blood flow by placing a clip across the aneurysm’s base – allowing blood to flow normally elsewhere in the brain. Ms. Bongiorno has no neurological deficits from the surgery and has since encouraged her own children, ages 19 and 21, to also get screened. Family history also led Ms. Smith to get screened. Her sister died from a brain aneurysm nearly two decades ago. This past summer, Ms. Smith’s primary care physician recommended she get screened due to family history. A magnetic resonance angiogram (MRA) was performed, which revealed a brain aneurysm. She was referred to Dr. Chalif, and upon reviewing the MRA images, Dr. Chalif said she was a good candidate to receive endovascular treatment with coils and a stent – another, more minimally invasive procedure to treat the brain aneurysm. Ms. Smith underwent an endovascular coiling and stenting procedure in January, performed by Dr. Setton. Coiling a brain aneurysm requires the insertion of a catheter into the femoral artery in the leg, which is then navigated through the blood vessels into the brain where the
aneurysm is located. Soft platinum coils and a stent are inserted through the catheter and deployed in the aneurysm. The coils conform to the shape of the aneurysm, fill the sac and block blood flow to the aneurysm to prevent the aneurysm from rupturing. “Approximately 5 percent of brain aneurysms are linked to a family history,” said Dr. Chalif. “But due to the decisive actions of Ms. Bongiorno and Ms. Smith seeking medical attention because of their family history, their lives were saved due to early detection. By sharing their stories at our walk this year, they will undoubtedly help us spread awareness about the warning signs of a brain aneurysm and the importance of getting screened if you have a family history. We are extremely grateful to both of them and they should be commended for their extraordinary courage and strength.” Registration for the walk begins at 8:30 a.m. at Jones Beach State Park, Field 5, 1000 Ocean Parkway, Wantagh, NY. The start time is 10 a.m. and the event will be held rain or shine. The registration fee is $25 through September 9, $30 afterward. Entry fee includes the cost of parking and snacks. On Thursday, July 20th, 33 students who had been treated at Stony Brook Children’s Hospital for pediatric cancer, were the recipients of this year’s Dan Brooks Memorial Education Award. The award ceremony was held at the Hilton Garden Inn on the Stony Brook University Campus. The Sunrise Fund’s Daniel Brooks Memorial Educational Award for Students with Cancer was established in memory of Dan Brooks, a young man who completed treatment for leukemia at Stony Brook University Medical Center. Following his treatment, Dan went on to obtain his degree in Special Education. He felt his experience with childhood cancer motivated him to pursue a career helping children who also faced challenges. Additionally, Dan played a significant role in the development of the School Intervention and Re-entry Program, which transitions children with cancer back to the classroom following cancer treatment. Sadly, Dan’s life was cut tragically short in a motor vehicle accident. His spirit and dedication to education, and children with cancer, prevail through this program. The award was first given in 2003 to 4 student patients. Since then, we have presented 356 awards to 125 patients, totaling over $258,000.

Disney characters like Ariel were cut out of their coloring books and attached to hats. The projects provided an opportunity for the students to use their fine motor skills; cutting, using scissors, and gluing, which strengthens hand and finger muscles. Students and staff wore the hats at the parade. A parade was the culminating activity and a celebration of all they learned. Students lined up in their classroom in
a safe, quiet and orderly fashion, then they took turns exiting the class and paraded down the hallway. Premm doesn’t have a marching band so Music Teacher Mr. Zaros did the next best thing; he chose Under the Sea-themed music like Octopus’s Garden by the Beatles and Beyond the Sea by Bobby Darin to accompany the parade. The parade concluded in the multi-purpose room. Zaros scattered an assortment of instruments such as drums, triangles, and maracas and multicolored ribbons around the room to encourage the students to socialize, move freely, and dance.

Summer Program
Doodle Bob, a hamster, and Ziggy, a gerbil, are very appreciative of the attention and care they are receiving from the students who tend to their needs four times a week, over the summer, in the Animal Science Program at the Academy at Bixhorn Technical Center. First year students in the Animal Science Program who planned on returning as second year students, were given the opportunity to participate in a paid summer internship. In order to be considered for the summer position, students had to meet a set of criteria. They had to provide their own
transportation, work three hours a day, twice a week, and not have any conflicts with the two-day schedule. After completing the application process and interviews with Work Experience Coordinator Rosaria Broesler, Abby Brown, from Sayville UFSD, Nadia Trejo, from Sachem CSD, Cole Thomson, from Connetquot CSD, and Sarah Meisner, from Sachem CSD, were hired. The students work either Monday and Friday or Wednesday and Saturday. Ms. Vicky Greco supervises the students over the summer. She said, “It’s important to have someone here to check
on and take care of the animals. These students are really great. They are applying the skills they learned throughout the school year.” Their responsibilities include cleaning the cages, feeding the animals, checking their teeth and coats, and playing with and interacting with them as well. Sarah said, “It’s hard to get a job in the animal field without experience and it’s hard to get experience when you are 17 years old. This paid internship is very beneficial to me. It was a great opportunity and it was secure employment over the summer.” The other students agreed. Abby said, “This is the best school year I’ve ever had. I love attending the Academy and I wouldn’t have met Cole, Nadia, and Sarah because we go to different school districts.” Abby wants to be a law enforcement officer. “I thought I wanted to be a veterinarian technician or a veterinarian assistant. I love working with the animals but ultimately I want to work in law enforcement and animal advocacy.”

Students enrolled in the summer program at Eastern Suffolk BOCES Premm Learning Center participated in a variety of Under the Sea-themed activities that increased vocabulary, inspired original poetry, and prompted the production of posters highlighting creatures that inhabit the water such as octopuses, lobsters, sharks, and jellyfish. The curriculum and activities aligned with New York Standards for English, Science, and the Arts. Movie Afternoons Movie Thursdays at Premm Learning Center offer more than entertainment for students. The entire exercise simulates the experience of visiting a movie theater, giving students the opportunity to practice good communication skills. Premm is an Eastern Suffolk BOCES school that provides special education services to students with special needs. Each Thursday
afternoon, the school shows two movies and students take turns functioning as ushers, ticket takers, and concession stand operators. When attendees arrive at the “theater,” they use appropriate communication to request the movie of their choice. They receive a movie ticket and fake money to purchase a snack before proceeding to the concession stand. Next, theatregoers give
their movie tickets to the ushers before entering the classrooms where the movies are being shown. To communicate, students may verbalize what they want, gesture or use an augmentative device. Said Sandra Pensak, summer principal at Premm, “This weekly event allows students to practice life skills and communicating with others in a situation that depicts the real world.”

On Saturday July 22nd, the Suffolk Independent Living Organization (SILO) celebrated the 27th Anniversary of the American with Disabilities Act at SILO Headquarters located at 755 Waverly Avenue in Holtsville. SILO was proud to introduce our New York State, Suffolk County and Brookhaven Town elected officials that attended our Americans with Disabilities Celebration. Each one of our elected officials spoke about the successes brought about by the ADA
working with people with disabilities, elderly individuals and their families. SILO provides over 27 programs and services throughout the Long Island Region. The ultimate goal is to provide the necessary support for people with disabilities and the elderly to live independently in within their communities. Hurricane Preparedness
The Town of Islip’s Office of Emergency Management recently held a hurricane preparedness forum at the Islip Fire House. Town personnel were joined by representatives of the Long Island Red Cross and the Suffolk County FRES Department (Fire,
Rescue, and Emergency Services). Several speakers educated the participants on the importance of having a plan in the event of an emergency, and the lessons learned from past hurricanes that can save lives and property in the future.
“Here in Islip we are taking a very proactive stance in getting our residents prepared for natural disasters and other emergencies,” said Islip Town Supervisor Angie Carpenter.
Every day something new and exciting is taking place at the Eastern Suffolk BOCES Sayville Academic Center. That’s because the students are enthused and full of spirit for their school and the summer program. The different activities during summer school incorporate the skills the students learned throughout the school year; to work cooperatively, gain independence, socialize appropriately, and apply functional academic skills. The students are
learning about creatures under the sea so when Crazy Hat Day came around, they crafted shark hats out of construction paper. This was educational fun because the students used their fine motor skills to measure and cut the fins, teeth, and eyes of a shark from the paper and then glued it all together to make a hat. Another spirit-filled day was Pajama Day. Students and staff came to school in their comfy cozy pajamas. There was an array of styles throughout the building
ranging from flannel to Super Heros, Angry Birds, sports stars, hearts, and My Little Pony. One of the best things to do in your pajamas is relax and read! You could find students gathered around a table, or sitting alone, or in front of the bookshelves quietly reading their favorite book in the library. Sitting quietly, being considerate of others, and being sensitive to others’ personal space is something students practiced in the library.

New P.E. Administrator The Sachem Central School District is proud to announce the appointment of Shannon McEntee as the new administrator for physical education, effective July 5th, 2017. Ms. McEntee comes to the district from the Rockville Centre Union Free School District, where she served as a health education and physical education teacher since 2006 and held the position of athletic administration intern since 2015. A co-writer of health curriculum for Rockville Centre, Ms. McEntee incorporated character education throughout the program to enhance social-responsibilities, self-
responsibility, teamwork, sportsmanship and leadership. During her time at Rockville Centre, Ms. McEntee also oversaw the student concussion screening and testing initiative while also serving on the Health and Safety and Wellness committees. She helped facilitate several programs including the District Wellness Fair and Substance Abuse Awareness Walk. In addition to her work in the classroom, Ms. McEntee also boasts an impressive background as South Side High School’s head varsity soccer coach. The two-time New York State Coach of the Year
Award winner guided the Cyclones to two state championships, three Long Island championships and four county championships in her time there since 2010. Ms. McEntee received her Bachelor of Science degree in physical education and health education from Adelphi University where she then went on to complete her master’s degree in health education. She completed the educational administrative program through Massachusetts College of Liberal Arts and the athletic administrative certification program through American Military University.

Golf Outing Set The Marty Lyons Foundation (MLF) Long Island Chapter will host its 19th annual Golf Outing on Monday, September 25th, at the St. George’s Golf & Country Club in East Setauket. The event honoree is James Booth, VP of JBH Environmental. The golf outing will be a fund raising event to benefit the Foundation’s mission, which is to grant children with lifethreatening or terminal illnesses their special wishes. Registration and continental breakfast will begin at 9 a.m. followed by a shotgun start at 10:45 a.m. The cocktail hour will begin at 4:30 p.m. followed by dinner. The Marty Lyons Foundation is a 501(c)(3) nonprofit organization founded by Marty Lyons, a former NFL defensive lineman for the New York Jets and member of the legendary “New York Sack Exchange.” Marty Lyons’ determination
led to the establishment of the Foundation after experiencing three lifealtering events in March of 1982. These moments forced him to “see the frailty, unfairness and the wonder of life.” With the encouragement of his family and friends, he formed the Marty Lyons Foundation in December of 1982. Since then, the organization has worked to keep hope alive in the hearts of thousands of children and provide support to their families. The Marty Lyons Foundation provides wishes to children aged 3 to 17 years old who have been diagnosed as having terminal or lifethreatening illnesses. MLF is unique in that it will consider granting a second wish to a deserving child who may need the hope and inspiration to face the battle of their lives for the second time around. Since it was established, the Marty Lyons Foundation
has granted 7,300 wishes that have brightened the lives of countless children. “By playing a fun-filled day of golf or attending the dinner, supporters help provide the Foundation with the much needed resources to fulfill its mission of granting children their special wishes. Since then she has moved through the promotional lines to be the Administrator I in charge of the support staff of the Examinations Division, overseeing the processing of all applications for the competitive examinations
Eco-conscious lifestyles may have transformed the ways people behave at home or on the job, but many schools have taken a little longer to embrace eco-friendly practices. classroom. One of the easiest steps to take is to reduce paper usage. According to Edutopia, a K-12 learning and education resource, the average school uses approximately 250,000 pieces of paper per school year. This estimate is based on an average of 50 reams of paper per teacher at a 100-teacher school.
Instead of relying so heavily on paper, students can take notes on laptops or tablets while teachers can rely on smartboards and notebooks for classroom lessons. When paper must be used, make a concentrated effort to discard it in designated recycling bins in each classroom.

Transitioning to Middle School A child’s school-aged years are filled with many different lessons and experiences. While in school, kids have the opportunity to broaden their horizons and meet new people. Many students will attend various schools before moving on to college, and therefore they must learn how to adjust to new schools. While many students attend elementary school together for years, students may not know their classmates once they make it to middle school, which tends to boast larger student bodies than elementary schools. That’s because many middle schools’ student bodies are a combination of several elementary schools. Making the transition from elementary school to middle school or junior high can spark anxiety in students, but that does not have to be. The National Education Association says a common element of a successful middle school experience is a smooth and positive
transition from elementary school. The following are a few ways students can handle their transition to middle school. Participate in a school-based transition program. Middle schools frequently host open houses for elementary school students, who can take tours of the campus. Parents can take part in these events with their children. If your schedule does not allow you to attend, then schedule a private tour with the middle school principal or a faculty member. Middle school guidance counselors or guest speakers also may make the rounds, visiting elementary schools directly. Be sure your student attends such information sessions so he or she can get an idea of what to expect during middle school. Dispel any myths your youngster might have heard about middle school. Youngsters hear lots of things about middle schools, and much of what kids hear might be untrue.
Ask kids what they have heard about the schools they will be moving on to, and then do your best to dispel any myths. Find a middle school buddy. Ask an older sibling or invite someone who is currently enrolled in the school to speak with your child and answer any questions he or she may have. Hearing directly from a fellow student may make your child feel more comfortable about what to expect. Talk about any other fears. Engage in an open dialogue with your son or daughter about any additional fears he or she may have. If students are worried about academics, spend some time over the summer going over the curriculum. If the potential for peer pressure is a cause for concern, reinforce advice on how to react to peer pressure. Parents and their children can take several steps to make students’ transitions to middle school as smooth as possible.

Improve Concentration in Class The “fidget spinner” and its many knock-offs made big news this year as the device became a must-have trend seemingly overnight. The toy has been touted as a gizmo that can do everything from improve concentration, relieve stress, treat ADHD, reduce nail biting, and even alleviate smartphone addiction. The growing influence of technology has been a cause for concern in classrooms, prompting the confiscation of gizmos by administrators and compelling teachers to pen reminders to parents about keeping distractions at home. However, in light of the popularity of devices for kids who seem to be natural-born fidgeters, educators must answer tough questions of how to improve concentration and reduce distractions in the classroom - especially for nontraditional learners. These techniques may be equally, if not more, effective than spinners and other toys.
Flexible seating fosters an environment that helps students learn based on their needs. Seating can range from the traditional desks and hard chairs to soft cushions, exercise balls and seats with elasticized bands around the legs. Children may also sit on the floor or in camp chairs or use standup tables depending on the classroom design. The idea is to avoid pigeonholing children into an environment that is not conducive to learning, especially as many children are prone to moving around and not sitting still for long periods of time. Although there isn’t yet extensive research into alternative seating, a 2011 study published in the American Journal of Public Health found that first-graders with standing desks chose to stand about two-thirds of the time and burned 17 percent more calories than classmates in traditional seated classrooms, and teachers noted that students at
standing desks were more alert and attentive and demonstrated less disruptive behavior than those using traditional desks. Allowing children to get up and move around from time to time can reset their alertness and mental focus. Get students up by asking them to do things as simple as handing out papers and supplies or cleaning off the whiteboard. Breaking up the classroom routine is another way to keep kids engaged. Instead of constant lecturing, institute small group work, independent study or cooperative learning. Some students may work better in quiet environments, while others may need some background noise to concentrate. Improving concentration in school can benefit students’ performance. Strategies that work in the classroom may work at home as well.
