The Long Island Country Fest

was held in Riverhead on Saturday, July 27th & Sunday, July 28th and it was a great success! There was a lot of fabulous country bands, line dancing, rides for the kids, good food, unique craft vendors and even monster truck rides and a mechanical bull ride! A rare, valuable seventeenth-century Dutch oil painting - once in poor condition and in urgent need of attention - has been conserved and is now hanging again in the Suffolk County Vanderbilt Museum. Hendrick Dubbels, View of Boulogne, c. 1670 Oil on canvas, 36” x 55” Suffolk County Vanderbilt Museum, Centerport, NY The conservation of the work, View of Boulogne by Hendrick Dubbels (16201676), was performed by the accomplished conservator Alexander Katlan and financed by a $5,000 grant from the Conservation Treatment Grant Program of the Greater Hudson Heritage Network, a regranting agency of the New York State Council on the Arts. Katlan began the project in November 2012 in his painting-conservation studio -- temperature- and humidity-controlled like a museum gallery -- in Flushing, NY. The project took nearly six months as intervals were required between steps and some steps had to be repeated. Katlan returned the

painting to the museum in June and it is hanging now in the Memorial Wing of the Vanderbilt Mansion. Stephanie Gress, the Vanderbilt Museum’s director of curatorial services, said the painting’s darkened varnish was cleaned in 1986 and the work was stabilized by adding a cloth lining to the back of the canvas. Katlan said he performed limited intervention: “I did not undo any previous repairs because of paint sensitivity. The goal was for the painting to be more ‘readable,’ to make the details easier for the viewer to see.” He talked about his work: “Dripping water and dust caused most of the damage, along with a bit of mold. I needed to repair puncture damage and a six-inch tear, as well as areas where the paint was cracked, separating from the canvas or flaking off. After completing a conservation and lab report on the damage and the structural problems, I took close-up photographs then went to work.” Using binocular magnification equipment, he removed the dust and

water-drop residue with a pH-adjusted solvent. The next step was to repair the puncture dents, damages, tears and cracking with a heated spatula and an adhesive that physically stabilizes and strengthens the canvas. He filled and painted the damaged areas to match the surrounding colors. Textural differences in the surface of the painting made it impossible to conceal all of the damaged areas. Katlan applied a final, overall layer of nondiscoloring resin varnish to unify the surface. Little is known of Dubbels’s life, Gress said. He was born in Amsterdam in 1620 and worked as a painter of seascapes and winter landscapes from circa 1641 until his death in 1676. (Some historical sources list his lifespan as 1621-1707.) “A lot of Dubbels’s work was attributed to another artist and it is very rare to find his paintings in the United States,” Gress said. “Much of his work is in collections in London and Paris. Our painting, original to Mr. Vanderbilt’s collection, may be one of the few in this country.”

Journey Of A Lifetime By: Jamie Lynn Ryan Where to begin… First trip abroad… first time on a plane – ever… first time away on vacation with 12 members of the family – or, the “traveling circus,” as I like to call it… So many memories, so many column topics… How does one encapsulate a nine-day, eight-night whirlwind cross-country excursion around Ireland, home of (at least a portion of) my paternal ancestors? To start, it was quite the action-packed adventure, from the first wakeup call of each morning right on through to the final toast of the evening. In between, there was no shortage of breathtaking scenery to take in, of history to absorb, of culinary

choices to sample, all the while experiencing it with family – as well as the other members of our tour group fortunate enough to ride along with the Ryan Family Magical Mystery Tour. Being the photog that I am, I was most looking forward to capturing the entire journey on camera, from takeoff to landing and everything in between. And that I did, perhaps a bit excessively, as my final total (minus many deletes along the way) came in just shy of 800 pictures. But being able to preserve it all – the sights and sounds, the candid moments, the vain attempts to gather everyone for “just one more” group photo… you can’t put a price on that. I may never travel to Ireland again, and maybe not

anywhere with the same cast of characters – which was why this trip was such a “mustgo,” despite my own lack of plane travel experience. You only live once, right? And, in the end, it was exactly as I expected, exciting and thrilling and adventurous and memorable in every way. And now that I have a passport, it sure gave me the bug to expand that itinerary to other countries that I’ve always wanted to see. Hmmm… where to next? But future plans aside, all the months of preparation, both at home and at work, certainly paid off in the form of a precious memory I will always carry with me. And if ever that memory starts to fade, I have about 800 or so photos to refresh it!

This summer, over 4,000 children will enjoy a summer outside of the city with volunteer host families in suburban, rural and small town communities across 13 states from Virginia to Maine and Canada through

my own first car. The excitement of purchasing my first vehicle was overwhelming. The pride I felt putting that coconut air freshener upon my rearview mirror was immense. I knew that it was finally time to show off what my hard work had earned me. While my friends were at the beach, I was bussing tables; but now, they are all asking me for rides. It is a great feeling to be one of the few from my generation who can say that they bought their first car with their own hard earned money. Like father, like son.

On July 8th, Alzheimer’s Disease Resource Center, Inc. held its third annual Col. Kenneth F. Lawlor Memorial Golf Outing at the Huntington Country Club. Seventy golfers took part in the event, which raised $70,000 for Alzheimer’s Disease research and care. Golfers also had the chance to win a car in the Hole-In-One Challenge sponsored by MercedesBenz of Smithtown. After playing a round of golf, the participants enjoyed a cocktail hour, dinner and a chance to win some raffle prizes.

The event is named after Col. Kenneth F. Lawlor, who was diagnosed with Alzheimer’s in the last years of his life. His grandson, Keith Lawlor, who chaired the golf tournament, is also Vice President of ADRC’s Board of Directors. Alzheimer’s Disease Resource Center — which is headquartered in Bay Shore and has a satellite office in Southampton — is the only local Alzheimer’s Disease advocacy and educational facility whose mission is to provide hands-on support and services to families

on Long Island and the New York metropolitan area. ADRC works with family members, health care professionals and researchers to ensure quality health care and support to those impacted by Alzheimer’s disease through care and consultation, information and referral, training, support groups, and caregiver safety products. On the morning of Sunday, August 18th, thousands of sports fans, runners, walkers, cancer survivors, and their friends and family will gather at Yankee Stadium to celebrate the fifth anniversary of the Damon Runyon 5K at Yankee Stadium. More than dozen of the runners are cancer survivors from Long Island who are running to help fund the Damon Runyon Cancer Research Foundation’s groundbreaking efforts to strike out cancer. These courageous Long Islanders are traveling from towns as far as Manorville to Great River to Baldwin for this very personal and worthy cause. The Runyon 5K has become one of New York’s most unique summer events and is the only charitable run/walk that uses the iconic Stadium as its course. Since the inaugural event in 2009, the 5K has raised more than $2 million for the Damon Runyon Cancer Research Foundation’s groundbreaking efforts to strike out cancer. Participants can register to run or simply donate to support a one of the runners at www.runyon5k. org. Participants must pay a $50 registration fee and meet a $60 fundraising minimum. Dance Festival A Success Internationally recognized dance companies and fastrising choreographers shared the picturesque stage of the 19th annual edition of Fire Island Dance Festival on July 19th-21st, raising a record $393,647 for Dancers Responding to AIDS, a program of Broadway Cares/Equity Fights AIDS. For the third year in a row the festival set a fundraising record, surpassing last year’s all-time high of $374,260. In its 19 editions, Fire Island Dance Festival has raised $3.3 million for the most vulnerable among us, helping to ensure they receive life-saving medications and health care, nutritious meals, counseling and emergency financial assistance. The festival, performed outdoors on the shores of the Great South Bay in Fire Island Pines, included world premieres of works choreographed by Kyle Abraham, Pontus Lidberg, Jeremy McQueen and Josh Prince. Humorist, actor and writer Mo Rocca returned for a second year as host, this time sharing his dance prowess in a whimsical, Al Blackstone-choreographed version of “Turkey Lurkey Time” from the Broadway musical Promises, Promises. Rocca is a regular on CBS Sunday Morning, star of Cooking Channel’s My Grandmother’s Ravioli and a featured panelist on NPR’s hit weekly quiz show Wait, Wait...Don’t Tell Me! This year’s Fire Island Dance Festival featured more than 50 professional dancers entertaining standing-roomonly crowds with ballet, modern, contemporary and Broadway dance. “It’s humbling to see, year after year, the support of the Fire Island Pines community, our generous donors and sponsors, the immensely talented dancers and choreographers and our committed core of tireless volunteers” said Denise Roberts Hurlin, founding director of Dancers Responding to AIDS. “When we started this event I never dreamed that so many would continually join us in this fight, which is as important today as it was 19 years ago.” This year’s memorable performances: · Alvin Ailey American Dance Theater offered Robert Battle’s “Strange Humors,” a bare-chested male duet exploring mysterious passions and explosive confrontations of wits and prowess. The dance was once described by Battle

as a deconstructed exploration of his fascination with the tango. · Three exuberant dancers from Los Angeles-based BODYTRAFFIC delivered “o2joy,” a playful, contemporary dance piece set to great American jazz music that expressed the pure love of dance with lighthearted humor. · The Broadway Dance Lab, in a number choreographed by founder Josh Prince, drafted six men to celebrate the repeal of the U.S. military’s “Don’t Ask, Don’t Tell” policy in an exuberant theatrical piece honoring soldiers’ right to serve and to love. · Evidence, A Dance Company, brought each performance to a joyous conclusion with “Torch,” a celebratory jubilation that brought audience members to their feet. The number was created by Ronald K. Brown, who choreographed the recent Broadway revival of The Gershwins’ Porgy and Bess. · Fresh from its debut this spring, the Christopher Wheeldon-choreographed “A Place for Us” featured Robert Fairchild and Tiler Peck, principal dancers at New York City Ballet. This intimately romantic pas de deux illuminated the real-life couple’s chemistry, offering the audience a rare opportunity to witness their artistry up close. · Kyle Abraham/Abraham.In.Motion premiered the uplifting “When We Take Flight,” a departure from Abraham’s usual introspective intensity featuring eight dancers weaving on and off stage in stunning sheer tunics designed by Reid Bartelme. · Lar Lubovitch Dance Company presented the male duet from “Concerto Six Twenty-Two” which became an anthem for the dance community in the early days of the AIDS crisis. The piece emotionally showed a relationship between the men where the gentle intertwining of arms and hands felt as powerful as the grandest leaps. · Pontus Lidberg explored his love for and fascination with water through seamlessly fluid movement that mirrored the changing tides of the Great South Bay, culminating with a breathtaking solo moment of him gazing out at the stunning vista beyond the stage. · Jeremy McQueen emerged as a choreographer with

great promise in his tour de force “Only the Beginning” set to Macklemore & Ryan Lewis’ No. 1 hit “Can’t Hold Us.” In sexy couture by Eric Wintering, eight empowered dancers leapt, battled and triumphed in an unforgettable performance. · Paul Taylor Dance Company brought us back to the 1960s and the summer of love in a solo excerpt from “A Field of Grass,” effortlessly performed by Robert Kleinendorst who captured the hippie feel of the time with an ease of movement set to the music of singer-songwriter Harry Nilsson. Keigwin + Company presented a crowd-pleasing array of Keigwin’s high-energy and quirky favorite dances for a special performance July 19 as part of an exclusive festival kick-off event for Leadership Supporters at the Albert Lepage Pavilion at Whyte Hall. The camp program includes recreational games, arts and crafts, and grief work activities, including a “grief walk” for peer discussions with professional staff group leaders, and a closing memorial ceremony with a white dove release. The program is open to families who were served by Good Shepherd Hospice as well as from the community at large. Children participants are between the ages of five and seventeen and are required to be accompanied by a parent or caregiver at the camp. Paralleling the children’s progress over the two days, adult caregivers also meet at Camp Alvernia. The adult program offers a variety of discussion and support groups, workshops, and educational materials, giving participants a chance to share their stories and concerns with one another. In doing so, adult attendees also learn more about both their selfcare and fulfilling the needs

The event takes place on the beautiful grounds of Camp Alvernia in Centerport with the goal to help grieving children of Nassau and Suffolk counties and their caregivers heal from their loss in a safe, fun and healthy environment. Southampton resident and Stony Brook Foundation Trustee Dorothy Lichtenstein has made a $1 million gift to Stony Brook Southampton Graduate Arts programs. The gift was announced on July 17th during the annual Southampton Writers Conference opening night, which featured a conversation about writing with former PBS News Hour anchor and novelist Jim Lehrer and his wife, novelist Kate Lehrer. Ms. Lichtenstein, President of the Roy Lichtenstein Foundation, is a longtime supporter of Stony Brook Southampton Graduate Arts programs; first as a frequent audience member at events and then as a writing workshop participant. “The growth I’ve witnessed in the last decade has been nothing short of amazing,” said Ms. Lichtenstein, citing new graduate programs in theatre, publishing, visual arts, and digital filmmaking, a presence in Manhattan, and programs designed to train young writers and artists on the East End. “This gift reflects my confidence in President Stanley’s leadership and the University’s commitment to excellence in the arts at Stony Brook Southampton. It also reflects my confidence in the extraordinary leadership of Robert Reeves, who has founded many of these programs and presided over their dramatic growth. Respondents were asked to identify whether in academic year 2012–2013 they would be offering a master’s in nursing degree through Internet-based distance education courses. Between the start of data collection in late July 2012 and the fall 2012 closing date, 280 institutions (59 percent) replied, with 101 (36 percent) reporting they planned to offer an online master’s in nursing degree program. Research Grant Received The Feinstein Institute for Medical Research announced today it will receive a $250,000 grant aimed at gaining a better understanding of chronic lymphocytic leukemia (CLL) and other blood cancers. The two-year grant from the Lymphoma Research Foundation (LRF), the nation’s largest non-profit organization devoted to

funding innovative lymphoma research, was awarded to Nicholas Chiorazzi, MD, head of the Karches Center for Chronic Lymphocytic Leukemia Research at the Feinstein Institute. Dr. Chiorazzi’s lab and that of his collaborator, Dr. Matthew D. Scharff at the Albert Einstein College of Medicine in the Bronx, will

utilize the funds to research gene expression and DNA methylation signatures linked to in vivo CLL/small lymphocytic lymphoma B-cell kinetics and outcome. “I am grateful to the Lymphoma Research Foundation for supporting this research so that Dr. Scharff and I can work to better understand CLL

and ultimately find a new, improved treatment for the devastating disease,” said Dr. Chiorazzi. The grant received from LRF is a portion of a $2.15 million grant divided among seven scientists investigating the biology of or new therapies for lymphoma. “As evident in our recent funding of more than

$2 million in research, the Lymphoma Research Foundation is dedicated to finding a cure for lymphoma through an aggressively funded research program,” said Diane Blum, LRF chief executive officer. “We remain grateful to our supporters whose generosity enables the Foundation to work toward its mission of eradicating

TAP Grads Six hard-working and dedicated young mothers graduated the Nassau BOCES Teenage Parenting Program (TAP) this June. All six will be attending college this fall. Helping them celebrate the milestone, in addition to friends and family, were six healthy babies. The program is a vital support network

that enables pregnant and parenting teens to continue their high school education and become responsible, competent adults. In addition to a strong academic curriculum, the program fosters these teens as both students and mothers. College fairs encourage students to pursue their education,

while Mommy and Me classes help them develop parenting skills. There are numerous speakers brought in during the year to guide and advise, and each student has a mentor to lend help and support. This year, young mothers received gifts of books from the Nassau Reading Council, to get

them started on their children’s early literacy. Student Wendy Blanco was honored with the distinguished George Farber Outstanding Student award and attended a ceremony earlier this year. At the intimate commencement ceremony, program alum Rosa Alvarado from the Class of 2007 spoke.

BIRTHDAY CELEBRATION - On June 21st, Al Trost, a longtime resident of Our Lady of Consolation celebrated his 90th birthday. Al was joined in this celebration by family, staff and friends he made over the years. Al keeps very busy and active by playing cards, doing trivia and enjoying the great food prepared for him, as well as participating in the Annual Golden Games, in which he has won many medals. Al grew up in Flushing and enlisted in the Army from October 1942 through December 1945. He later worked in the plumbing business, drove a cab and was employed by Commander Oil. When he married his first wife Marie, in 1947, they relocated to Copiague where they were blessed with seven children. Al’s family has now grown into 18 grandchildren and 13 greatgrandchildren.

Consumers Should Take Advantage Of Free Credit Reports

( N A P S I ) — T h e Consumer Financial Protection Bureau (CFPB) found that many consumers are overwhelmed by the amount of information available to help them learn more about the financial services marketplace. At the same time, the CFPB found one of the most popular resources offered is information about credit reports. The credit bureaus have found that information about credit reports is popular as well. “Each year, there are over 25 million

free credit reports provided to consumers,” said Stuart K. Pratt, president and CEO of the Consumer Data Industry Association. “And while that’s a significant number, there are still a considerable number of consumers who aren’t exercising their option to get their report. According to a survey done by VantageScore and the Consumer Federation of America, 37 percent of consumers have never obtained a copy of their credit report,” he added. Consumers can get a free

credit report from each of the three nationwide credit bureaus, Equifax, Experian and Trans-Union, once a year by going to www. annualcreditreport.com. The process is easy and enables consumers to have real-time access to their credit reports. “Many people get annual medical checkups. We encourage consumers to be just as conscientious when it comes to their personal finances; get an annual credit checkup by obtaining your free credit report,” added Pratt.
