The weeklong day camp for students entering grades one through six fosters innovation and creativity while also building self-esteem, teamwork, persistence and goalsetting skills. Selection of the right summer camp for children can be intimidating and overwhelming as the options continue to grow and become more niche. Camp Invention not only encourages inventive young minds through Science, Technology, Engineering and Mathematics (STEM) in a fun and creative atmosphere, it also incorporates outdoor activities as part of its curriculum. Camp Invention students experience winning, success and victory, along with an

adrenaline rush that comes with competition among students and successful completion of challenging projects. Camp Invention provides a great opportunity for inventive young minds to exercise their creativity and use their imagination in ways they don’t normally get to - through real-world problemsolving challenges, they build things, take things apart, explore different types of technology and so much more. Many times, the students are having so much fun, they don’t even realize they are learning and developing new skills. “We are thrilled to be offering Camp Invention to students in our community and developing skills that ensure bright futures for our participants,” said Nancy Lenihan, Camp Invention Director in Sumner, Washington and Highly Capable Classroom Teacher. “We are molding inventors, innovators and entrepreneurs and instilling creative problemsolving, which sets this camp apart from the rest.” This year’s Camp Invention curriculum

is called Illuminate™ and was inspired by some of our nation’s most brilliant minds including experienced educators, Inductees of the National Inventors Hall of Fame and members of the United States Patent and Trademark Office. Illuminate™ will encourage children to explore their inventiveness in the Design Studio: Illuminate module, investigating circuits and taking on a nature-inspired design challenge. As they dream, build and make discoveries, children will have a chance to build a prototype from scratch and explore math from a new angle when they create origami flight models during team-building exercises. Local programs are facilitated and taught by educators who reside and teach in the community. CHEER CHAMPS - The Islip Town Board recently presented awards to the athletes and coaches of the Long Island Cheer All-Stars Lady Lime team. The girls are part of the Small Youth Level 2 division (ages 8-11), and travel throughout the country competing in cheerleading events. Imagine the year, 2015, July 14th to be exact, people dressed in platforms, paisley and peace signs; flowers, freedom and friendship fill the air. Soft rock and disco blared through the walls. For a moment, you just might believe you’ve re-entered the 70s, actually, you’ve entered the Connetquot Public Library! Forty years ago, on a gray and overcast morning, over 1,000 residents gathered to apply for library cards, one room and 10,000 books. Today on a gray and overcast morning, more than 300 patrons gathered in the community room of the library to celebrate in style, family style. From the moment of the unknown 40 years ago, to a moment of magic when a new generation gathered to celebrate the past, a past that gave them a place to learn, grown and explore. It was a day of remembrance, a day to

look back upon moments frozen in time, moments tucked away in picturesque books. From the founding of the library in 1975 to the innovations of 2015, the Connetquot Public Library is once again on the edge of change. For our youngest patrons however, with summer in full swing, it was a day of enjoyment, their harmonious voices unified in fun and frolic. Employees dressed in their seventies best, marked the carefree decade in vibrant colors and “far out” fashion. The first three hundred patrons were gifted with commemorative beach towels to celebrate the occasion. In the community room, the magic of childhood reigned with birthday crowns and raffles for the Long Island Aquarium, Bronx Zoo and The Long Island Game Farm. Children enjoyed cupcakes adorned with white, pink and yellow

swirled frosting. Imaginations flourished at the craft table as children exercised their creative talent to produce works of art. Those who had their faces painted wore colorful innovative designs, adding to the celebration. From a twisty hat to a princess wand, children also had a variety of choices for balloon art. The room was bursting with the hues and tints of childhood, the laughter and simplicity of youth. The celebration concluded with children singing Happy Birthday to the library. It was hard to tell where one voice ended and another began, the voices were singular and united. With a history of service to the community, the library thanks its employees and patrons for 40 years of friendship, commitment and memories.

Poster Contest Set Islip Town Supervisor Angie Carpenter has announced that her office will be holding a poster contest to promote pool safety awareness. Recent incidents, including the tragic drowning of a young girl, prompted the call for increased vigilance and safety measures for residential pools. The poster contest will help spread the message about precautions that everyone can practice to prevent further tragedies.

“Public and private pools are great places for kids to have fun and cool off in the summer months, but parents and children need to be aware of ways to prevent accidental drownings,” said Islip Town Supervisor Angie Carpenter. Entrants must be Town of Islip residents, and should include their name, age, address, and phone number on their submission. Posters should

be 11” x 17” or larger, and must be submitted to the Town of Islip Office of Communications and Media Relations (655 Main St, Islip, NY, 11751) by August 14th, 2015. My Life in a Bowl By: Jamie Lynn Ryan

Buddy the Betta here… Jamie asked me to fill in for her this week, since she’s been receiving so many reader inquiries regarding my wellbeing. Well, here I am, as requested, in all my turquoisefinned glory, excited to pen my very first guest column. Life in a bowl can be confining, but my human has made it as comfy a home as possible, decking it out with multi-colored gravel and – my favorite feature of all – a tiny plastic plant. Let me tell you, hours of fun can be had squeezing in between those tiny branches, nibbling on the stems and attempting to dig through the gravel to uproot and redecorate. Hours. Endless fun, I tell you. The one complaint I have is

the feeding schedule. I mean, sure she comes and says good morning and everything, but the least she could do is give me a rundown of her schedule, an ETA on dinner… Doing all those laps around my bowl works up an appetite. Back and forth, back and forth – and she wonders why she finds me chewing on the plant at least once a day! As soon as I see that light go on, I know my human is home. Oh boy, oh boy! It’s feeding time! Depending on her level of generosity, I usually find four or five flakes floating atop the water. Depending on my level of hunger, I either inhale them all in one gulp; or, if I’m in a playful mood, I’ll stalk each pellet from every angle, before pouncing and thoroughly chewing and digesting it.

Life is good. In fact, my human keeps telling me that my “half-birthday” is coming, whatever that is, on the same day as her birthday. I’m not certain what that means, but I sure hope there’s cake! I see her unpacking all sorts of goodies and preparing colorful meals when she comes home – but she never shares! I sit with my face pressed against the glass, hoping for just a taste, but alas… counting down the days until this alleged milestone. Til then, it’s been fun filling in for the human. Hopefully, she’ll be back next week so I can go back to my busy schedule of shifting gravel and nibbling on any fingers that happen to find their way into my bowl. A Betta’s life isn’t as easy as it looks. This is Buddy, signing off…

Notice of Availability Mid-Suffolk Yard/Ronkonkoma Yard Expansion Project Environmental Assessment The Metropolitan Transportation Authority (MTA) and the Long Island Rail Road (LIRR) have prepared a Draft Environmental Assessment (EA) for the Mid-Suffolk Yard/Ronkonkoma Yard Expansion Project (the Project or the Proposed Action), in Ronkonkoma, Suffolk County. The document includes an evaluation of the potential environmental impacts of the Project, and also provides a description of the Site Selection Alternatives Evaluation LIRR has performed. That site selection process identified site selection evaluation criteria and potential sites, then evaluated those sites against the criteria and identified the enlargement of the existing Ronkonkoma Yard as the best alternative (referred to as the Ronkonkoma Yard Expansion). LIRR would like to thank the elected officials, residents, civic groups, business community and commuters who participated in the process thus far by visiting the Mid-Suffolk Yard information center, viewing information on the MTA website, and/or providing comments. Proposed Action The Proposed Action would enlarge the existing Ronkonkoma Yard with a new lead track and eleven additional tracks for the storage and servicing of LIRR commuter trains of up to twelve cars in length. A twelfth track, holding four cars for trains requiring repair, would also be provided, adjacent to a new two-car Emergency Shed.

Having recently been awarded a $500 scholarship from the Long Island credit union NEFCU, Sachem North graduate Megan Loyst has been given an additional $20,000 from the local financial institution as part of its annual Making a Difference Premier Scholarship program. The 2015 high school graduate from Lake Grove plans to attend the Carroll School of Management at Boston College in the fall. NEFCU’s $20,000 Making a Difference Premier Scholarship award will be paid over four years ($5,000 per academic year). In May, she was awarded $500 from NEFCU as part of its Making a Difference High School Scholarship program. To date, NEFCU has awarded more than $1 million in scholarships as part of their scholarship programs. Ms. Loyst was chosen from a field of student applicants throughout

Long Island. To apply for the scholarship, each applicant had to have at least 100 hours of documented community service, a four-year overall high school grade of 90 or above, and be a recent recipient of either NEFCU’s Making a Difference Family Scholarship or High School Scholarship. In addition to her high academics, Ms. Loyst’s scholarship application included the following community activities: • Volunteer at Stony Brook Hospital’s nursing department • President of Sachem High School North’s Business and Marketing Honor Society • Founder of a school recycling program • Founder of the Change for Charity program • Active participant in the Festival of Trees and Lights • Conducted fundraising activities for Sachem
