The food supply at food banks historically drops off in summertime. Coupled with the pandemic and its after-effects, replenishing the diminishing food supply at this time is even more urgent. Enter Power to Feed Long Island – a partnership between Island Harvest Food Bank and PSEG Long Island to rally the Long Island community to donate food to support neighbors facing food insecurity. Continuing through the end of September, there will be largescale collection drives at several local supermarkets, with a goal of restocking warehouse shelves with the equivalent of 21,000 nutritious meals (for 2021). At all locations, there will be a contactless drive-thru area, as well as collection bins, set up from 10 a.m. – 2 p.m. as follows:

The Children’s Summer Theatre series offers families several opportunities to enjoy a variety of free, fun and interactive shows at state parks throughout

Protect Your Parks: 4 Ways To Keep Facilities Clean Parks have long been popular places to congregate. Facilities vary, but many parks offer various amenities — from walking or biking trails to dog runs to fitness areas. And while thousands of individuals and families visit parks each

year, when the COVID-19 pandemic was declared in early 2020, parks provided an escape for those who were unable to gather at indoor recreational facilities. Even though parks offered safe places to have fun outdoors when other options were limited, the pandemic affected the way the parks were managed due to budget cuts and reduced staff. This, coupled with a surge in visitors that continues today, only underscores the importance of all outdoor enthusiasts doing what they can to keep parks clean. The following are four effective strategies for individuals to keep parks clean. 1. Leave no trace According to National Geographic, Leave No Trace is a set of environmental ethics for interacting with the great outdoors. It follows guidelines for using parks in thoughtful, sustainable ways. In addition to carry in/carry out

policies for belongings and trash, Leave No Trace components involve making an effort not to disturb and plants and animals, hiking in appropriate areas, and using care when camping. More information about the Leave No Trace movement is available at https://lnt.org. 2. Manage pet waste The Environmental Protection Agency estimates that, in the United States, pet dogs produce more than eight billion pounds of feces each year, which equates to three-quarters of a pound per dog every day. Dog waste can contain bacteria and even cryptosporidium, a parasite that infects humans. Even though animal waste is organic, leaving it alone instead of picking it up can lead to environmental issues, including negative effects on local water supplies. It also smells bad and attracts flies and vermin. It’s important

for park visitors to pick up after their companion animals. 3. Reduce waste It can take roughly 450 years for a plastic water bottle to biodegrade. Even if they finally break down, bottles made from polyethylene terephalate (PET) can leave toxins in the soil and threaten fresh water. Use a reusable bottle instead of a single-use alternative when visiting the park. If plastic bottles must be used, be sure to place them in recycling containers around the park. 4. Volunteer Individuals can volunteer to pick up trash at their local parks. Various conservation groups and organizations organize trash pick-up events each year. Increased usage of parks means the potential for more trash and damage. Everyone can do his or her part to keep parks clean and enjoyable.

Theatre has been presenting free, smallscale performances under its marquee for attendees of Patchogue Chamber of Commerce’s Sundown Festival on Main Street. As part of its new “Emerging Artist Series,” funded by the County of Suffolk, the first performance was on July 22nd featuring local singer/ songwriter Dave March. The next performance will take place on August 5th featuring Jon and Anthony’s Acoustic Jam followed by a performance on August 19th featuring Pete Mancini. Patchogue Theatre for the Performing Arts announced its reopening plans & COVID-19 guidelines for 2021. After more than a year of “intermission,” Patchogue Theatre will resume its main stage programming at 100% capacity beginning in September. As of May 19, New York State has adopted CDC guidelines which allow for venues to operate at 100% capacity with no social distancing. The Theater has 1,106 seats. Mask mandates have been lifted, but unvaccinated individuals are still required to wear a mask. However, it’s possible that guidelines can change by September. Autism And Children According to the National Autism Association, autism is a bio-neurological developmental disability that affects the normal development of the brain in various areas. Those areas include social interaction, communication skills and cognitive function. Autism generally appears before a child reaches his or her third birthday, and the NAA notes it is diagnosed

four times as often in boys than it is in girls. Roughly 40 percent of children with autism do not speak, but parents whose children speak between the ages of 12 and 18 months should know that such youngsters can still ultimately be diagnosed with autism. In such instances, the NAA notes that children lose the words they previously learned. Incidences of

On Thursday, July 15th the Connetquot Coaches Association Basketball Camp ended session III of the revitalized summer camp experience. Each of the camp sessions included conditioning, individual and team skills, competitive, ageappropriate, challenges, and championship play. T-bird basketball coach Kyle Black and his staff inspired the district students with a program designed to improve

individual and team skills, while appreciating the value of teamwork. More than 60 students in grades 5 through 12 attended the three week morning sessions, leaving afternoons for beach and pool time with friends! National Alliance for Caregiving offers advocacy and seeks to increase public awareness of the issues facing caregivers and professionals. For grandparents and non-parents raising grandchildren, The New York State Kinship Navigator provides information and links on how to apply for financial assistance to care for a child related to you. With many of these resources available online, SeniorNet offers access to computer technologies and education to help seniors navigate a multitude of resources. For benefit information, Social Security Online, the official website of the U.S. Social Security Administration, provides

estimates and application requirements. This site also offers guidelines on Medicare prescription drug plans. Considering the financial costs of aging poses an enormous challenge. Through the library’s website, access links to Medicare and Medicaid. Partnership for Long Term Care is “a unique program combining long term care insurance and Medicaid Extended Coverage.” CMS/Centers for Medicare and Medicaid Services is a government website designed to assist beneficiaries and providers through customer service and patient advocacy. There is also a separate link for the New York State Department of Health’s Medicaid site as well as the U.S. government site for individuals with Medicare. For those nearing 65, the Medicare site answers questions you may have about Medicare, prescription drug coverage, and Medigap policies. For Medicaid, you will find a Fact Sheet and eligibility requirements. The library’s website contains numerous useful links for members and their families to help navigate everyday life. Family Friendly Sundown Festival Is Taking Over Main Street

You heard right! Patchogue’s dynamic Main Street is coming alive again this summer for some festival fun! The Patchogue Young Professionals, and Patchogue Chamber of Commerce are excited to host the Sundown Festival on Main Street in Patchogue! The Sundown Festival is a family oriented street festival, taking place on Main Street in Patchogue on Thursday, August 5th, August 19th with a rain date August 26th. Festivities will run from 5:00 PM-9:30 PM each evening, with road

closures spanning from Maple Avenue, to West Ave, including South Ocean and Railroad Avenue. The Sundown Festival will have something for everyone! There will be 5 live music stages, outdoor dining (no drinking pens), a variety of craft food vendors, retail vendors, family oriented entertainment, Patchogue’s farmers market, the Patchogue Arts Councils (PAC) famous “Vendor Circus” and so much more! AMVETS Post 48 Makes Donation To The USA Patriots To Assist Our Wounded Warriors

On July 17, AMVETS Post 48 Members attended a USA Patriots (formerly known as the Wounded Warrior Amputee Softball Team) slow pitch softball game in Bayport, NY. AMVETS Post 48 wanted to make a donation to the USA Patriots in order to help with their mission of bringing like minded veteran amputees together to promote the benefits of inclusive sport and therapeutic recreational activities, to inspire and motivate communities of people, to support children with physical challenges, and to operate as a vehicle that offers

national opportunities for continued service to our country. The USA Patriots has been a registered nonprofit since 2011 after the need for continued rehabilitation options for our wounded warriors had begun to rise. Through the sport of slow pitch softball, the organization has grown in significant ways by providing athletic programming, youth program initiatives to teach the abilities of adaptive sport by our veterans, and to engage our veterans in communities to show off the abilities they now have as post trauma athletes.
