Celebrating Pre-School Grads Principal Dr. Gail Cholden, along with teachers and staff of Connetquot’s Edward J. Bosti Elementary preschool program, welcomed family, friends and district representatives to celebrate the program’s Class of 2016 during a commemorative

“graduation ceremony.” Dressed in bright red caps and gowns, the enthusiastic graduating class provided smiles for all in attendance as they performed a selection of songs. During the closing of the ceremony, teachers called the names of each graduate, who

then climbed over a step bridge to represent their crossing from preschool to kindergarten. After the students received their diplomas, attendees were treated to a video program highlighting the student’s growth over the course of the year.

CLEARING THE SHELTERS - The Islip Town Animal Shelter recently participated in a nationwide “Clear the Shelters” event, which was sponsored in part by NBC Universal. More than 30 animal shelters in the New York Tri-State area teamed up with hundreds of animal shelters across the country to find new homes for thousands of homeless pets. Participating shelters offered incentives such as no-cost or reduced fee adoptions to attract potential adoptees. The Islip Animal Shelter offered to waive the adoption fee for anyone wishing to adopt on that day. In all, fourteen dogs, one cat and one bird were adopted.

Moving Up from Middle School The educational achievements of this year’s Ronkonkoma Middle School eighth-grade class were applauded by proud parents, family members and educators during a memorable moving up ceremony, held at Connetquot High School.

Before each student was presented with a commemorative moving up certificate, Principal Charles D. Morea congratulated the 248 scholars and wished them all good health, happiness and success in all they do. “I urge you to dream

big and work hard to make those dreams come true,” he stated. Assistant Principal Joseph Licato also expressed congratulations toward the graduates, making note of their many accomplishments.

Breakfast consists of one serving of milk, one or more servings of vegetables and/or fruit,

and one serving of grain or bread. Lunch is also served at BAC. Lunch is the same as breakfast with the addition of one serving of meat or meat alternative. A snack is a 100% shelf-stable juice and an enriched whole grain snack. “These daily meals may be the only nutritious food a student eats,” said Longo. Summer School at BAC is designed to provide opportunities for students to succeed with previously attempted course work.

volunteers from Cornell Cooperative Extension’s Master Gardener Program. Volunteers still meet each spring at the circa 1920 greenhouse on the grounds of Brookwood Hall in East Islip. Volunteer gardeners grow and supply about 30 local KIC volunteer groups with over 6,000 free plants that are used to beautify public spaces throughout the Town of Islip. The GRO1000 grant will help expand a newly renovated community vegetable garden to include 100 square feet for a children’s “Victory Garden,” a new pumpkin/ watermelon patch and a new berry bed with a bird bath. In addition to the children’s garden, other improvements include replanting an existing meadow bed as a 200 square foot pollinator garden. Ultimately, these special plants will be distributed to Project Bloom groups with the goal of establishing 30 more pollinator gardens. Informational signs installed in the gardens will educate the public about the role these types of plants play in maintaining a healthy environment by supporting the health of bees, butterﬂies, birds, bats and other pollinators. The last several years have seen an ambitious expansion of Project Bloom under the stewardship of Master Gardener Kathy VanDyke and her husband, Bob. With their knowledgeable direction, scores of volunteers have donated many hours to create a new landscape for the benefit of the public. “We were thrilled to receive the grant from Scotts to support our garden projects at Project Bloom,” said Kathy. “As a volunteer organization with very limited funding, this grant award will go a long way towards establishing new gardens and creating educational signs.” The public is invited to visit the gardens located on the Brookwood Hall property at 50 Irish Lane, East Islip. Funding Secured At the Tuesday, July 26th, General Session the Suffolk County Legislature voted to approve funding for a new Patchogue Health Center Facility. The new facility is slated to open at the former Verizon building on North Ocean Avenue north of Sunrise Highway. The current health center, which is located on East Main Street in the heart of their downtown, is in an aging building with limited room for expansion. Last year Suffolk County entered into an agreement with Hudson River Healthcare to operate the

County’s health centers. This move will complete the agreement. “The East Patchogue community has long been trying to revitalize their downtown,” stated Deputy Presiding Officer Rob Calarco. “Moving the health facility will open up a valuable piece of commercial real estate right at the center of their Main Street.” The new Patchogue health center, which will serve more than 15,000 people, will be funded in part by a $7.5 million grant from the New York State Delivery

System Reform Incentive Payment (DSRIP). Suffolk County will provide the matching funds, which will help cover the cost of renovations. “I thank my colleagues for their support and Hudson River Healthcare for their professionalism” stated Deputy Presiding Officer Calarco. “Most importantly, I am grateful to the East Patchogue community for their enormous patience. This facility will be in a better location that can handle the growing need for quality healthcare.”

A children’s garden and pollinator garden created by Project Bloom volunteers will expand and thrive thanks to a recent $500 grant designed to support community “greenspace” development. Project Bloom, a community beautification program, was one of approximately 100 organizations across the U.S. chosen for the Scotts Miracle-Gro Company’s GRO1000 initiative encouraging garden builds. It is part of a broader initiative designed to create 1,000 gardens and greenspaces throughout the U.S., Canada and Europe for the Company’s 150th anniversary in 2018. Memoir in the Making By: Jamie Lynn Ryan

As of this writing, I have published 573 columns. During the course of those, it has often occurred to me that some – mainly those with more of a personal touch – would make a solid foundation for a mini-memoir of sorts, a highlight reel of those experiences which have shaped the last decade or so of my life. I recently took the time to scan through each one, brieﬂy, with an eye on setting aside those which I felt were, at the very least, worth a second look. It’s amazing, when you read them one after another, how the narrative weaves together, providing a glimpse into whatever happened to be my thoughts at that particular moment in time. Sure, there were the ﬂuffy, filler-type accounts of seasons changing and deadlines crunching, of miscellaneous

musings on life, and people; random rants and reader feedback. But among the hundreds were some solid accounts of current events, heartfelt profiles of loved ones, and momentous occasions in my life. And, of course, we can’t forget about Buddy’s 20 or so contributions to the cause, perhaps better suited for an illustrated children’s series in his own right. (We do know how he hates to share the spotlight.) This initial scan was just the first step; but, after two days of skimming, I had set aside close to one hundred of my favorites. Not a bad beginning. My hope, over time, is to provide the narration necessary to connect the dots, perhaps throw in some favorite quotations, photography to illustrate the progression… and see where it winds up.

It is, mostly, a project for me – a labor of love encompassing all those hobbies which I hold dear. Of course, if and when it all comes together, I would love to share it with my family and friends, and readers, if they would care to revisit this abridged anthology. In the interim, I welcome any feedback and suggestions those readers might care to offer – favorite columns, stories that stood out over the years, topics you would like to see covered in the coming weeks… anything at all. CELEBRATING WITH SILO - Legislator Leslie Kennedy had the opportunity to celebrate

the 26th anniversary of the Americans with Disability Act with the Suffolk Independent Living Organization this past Saturday. Suffolk Independent Living Organization (SILO) has helped over 3100 individuals with disabilities across Long Island. This year alone they consulted over 158 advocacy cases and helped 294 families apply for supported housing.

College Grant Received grant. The $2,949,237 Resources and Education that Support Training Opportunities within the Regional Economy (RESTORE) Grant, according to McKay, will be used to train individuals by providing them with the skills and credentials required to meet the growth in cybersecurity, manufacturing and health information technolog RESTORE is part of the federal government’s national TechHire initiative that is funded by H1B visa fees and intended to train local workforces with the skills required by regional industry. “The RESTORE Grant will allow our college to focus new and additional resources on recognizing and empowering residents in our region with the education and training they need to develop new skills and earn higher wages,” said McKay.

McKay explained that some workers may be just starting their careers, while others may be older workers who don’t have the basic skills to allow them to assume more responsibility and reach higher paying roles. Others could also be workers who may have the competencies, but not formal credentials, to excel at a more senior-level job. The RESTORE Grant will provide the resources for retraining individuals and upskilling to earn an associate’s degree and transfer to a baccalaureate program for expanded career options. Bootcamp training programs will be developed and students will prepare for online coursework while learning valuable industry and job readiness skills. McKay said the college envisions the RESTORE Grant providing training for about 350 students.

A New Level With the help of district coaches, players and Athletic Director Mark Dellecave, more than 60 Connetquot students worked to enhance their athletic skills this summer

during the Thunderbird Basketball Camp. The program, which ran in early July, engaged attendees in a variety of dribbling and basketball shooting drills throughout

each session. The exercises were designed to provide students with the opportunity to learn both basic and advanced skills and to further their basketball playing abilities.
