Bill Jones lives with his wife and daughter in Southampton, NY. Each trip includes 50 veterans who go for free, thanks to donations from across LI. They are accompanied by 50 guardians, next generation, able-bodied volunteers who donate $400 (tax deductible) to offset the day’s travel expenditures. If there is no family member to act as a guardian, don’t worry, HFLI has a roster of volunteers ready to step up for the privilege and donate the required fee. The trips are offered to veterans who have not yet visited these memorials in our nation’s capital. Metamorphosis “We delight in the beauty of the butterfly, but rarely admit the changes it has gone through to achieve that beauty.” ~ Maya Angelou We all have a path, a journey we take through life. Some are relatively direct, with few bumps and curves along the way; others prove far more winding and full of detours. In the end, though, I believe we all reach the destination we are meant to. Eventually. Last week, I touched on some of the ways I go about my craft, and how my writing has evolved through the years. In speaking to the next generation of potential journalists, the best experience I can draw upon is my own. There was a time when I was in their shoes, sitting in high school classrooms and then college lecture halls, wondering where exactly this path I had chosen would lead. It was during those formative years that I looked to my own sources of inspiration in the writing field for guidance, absorbing their styles and studying their techniques for
some hint of how I could apply these skills to my own drafts and create a unique voice. Just today, in fact, I found myself perusing the archives of past “In Step” columns, searching for a tribute I had written following the passing of Ed Lowe, master storyteller, and one mentor I had the extreme good fortune to work with during my time here at South Bay. Seldom do we have the opportunity to meet our idols, let alone share in our mutual love of a particular craft. No matter the difference in age, or how vast the generational gap, there is simply no substitute for the wisdom of someone who has experienced those things you only dare to dream. If you had asked me back in my formative years where I saw myself in ten, fifteen years time, I probably would have shrugged and said, “Hopefully reporting from the clubhouse of the New York Yankees” or “traveling across the country ala Almost Famous, searching for the next big story to be featured in Rolling Stone Magazine.” Realistic? Perhaps
not entirely. But these were the people, and the positions, I admired from afar and wished to emulate. Maybe it was the sense of prestige I found attractive, the celebrity aspect. Fast forward into the real world of adulthood, and it wasn’t long before I discovered that, if you truly have a love for writing - or any particular skill - it truly doesn’t matter where you do it, what the topics entail or how much notoriety you gain in the process. The fact is, you can make a significant difference on any level, even within the confines of the local community you grew up in, surrounded by the family, friends and local followers you may be fortunate to gain along the way. And that is exactly what has happened, from this desk in Farmingdale, as I put fingertips to keyboard each week, drawing from my own life experiences and those who have inspired me. The path may not always be clear, but the passion has never wavered. That, above all else, is what makes the journey worthwhile.

volleyball players. “This was our largest enrollment so far and the campers were both supportive and enthusiastic,” said coach Hertz. “The varsity girls joined the coaching staff and did a great job of teaching and serving as strong female role models for the campers. The best part for me is that all of the coaches had attended the camp as young campers as they were just starting out in volleyball. Now, they get the chance to give back to the sport that helped mold
them.” The young students worked hard, made some new friends and look forward to putting their new found skills, and confidence, into practice this season. The Connetquot High School varsity volleyball team finished the regular season undefeated (18-0) and went on to win the league, Suffolk County and Long Island and New York State Championship Tournaments.

( N A P S ) — Osteoporosis—bone loss—is a serious condition that half of all women and many men can expect to develop at some time in their lives. Fortunately, it can be detected and treated. In fact, women who have a bone density scan have 35 percent fewer hip fractures than those who do not. The problem is only 23 percent of eligible patients are scanned. The experts at the National Osteoporosis Foundation (NOF) say that if you’re a woman over 65 or a man over 70 or if you’re over 50, postmenopausal and have risk factors for osteoporosis, you should probably talk to your doctor or other health care provider about getting a bone density test, especially if you’ve never had one. Making Cents Project-based learning inspired fifth-grade students at Waverly Elementary School in the Sachem Central School District to go above and beyond as they developed a contest to promote recycling across the building. A group of students in Danielle Sexton and Kristina Fulcher’s class
developed the initiative after being asked the question of how they can help the environment. They then collaborated to develop a buildingwide recycling contest, where the grade level who recycled the most plastic water bottles would receive a pajama, movie and popcorn party. Through rigorous promotion, the
students spread the word about the contest and also created signs for each garbage can in the building. At the completion of the contest, the student effort earned $30 in recycled water bottles, which was used to purchase the reward for the fourth- and fifth-grade students who won the contest.
GIRL SCOUT PATCH LAUNCH - Town Supervisor Angie Carpenter visited aerospace technology manufacturer, East/West Industries recently, where she was joined by the Girl Scouts of America to commemorate its new patch program. The new patches, launched by the Girl Scouts organization, help to promote leadership values, and the many career paths girls can explore that they otherwise wouldn’t consider. Girl Scouts who visited the aircraft manufacturing facility were given a tour by President Teresa Ferraro.

Town Supervisor Angie Carpenter was joined by members of the Islip Town Board and Town Public Safety officials recently, to honor three Town employees for their quickthinking responses to residents who were in lifethreatening situations. In 2017, while en-route to an interview for the current position he holds, Joseph Cassano, a parttime dispatcher with the Town of Islip, jumped into action to aid a postal worker whose leg was injured when he was struck by a car while removing mail from the back of his truck. Dispatcher Cassano placed a tourniquet on the postal worker’s leg, until
EMS arrived and treated the injury. Most recently, in June 2018, Dispatcher Cassano stepped in to save an unresponsive gentleman who was locked in his vehicle, by breaking the window and preforming CPR until EMS arrived at the scene. On June 30th, 2018 while on duty at Ronkonkoma Lake, Marina Guard Harry Torborg noticed an elderly woman who appeared to be out of breath and weakened by the extreme heat. He immediately assisted the woman to a bench, offered her water, and notified Marina Guard Supervisor John Hons. The two asked the woman where she was heading, to
which she replied, ‘home to Hempstead.’ The guards immediately notified Suffolk County Police, and contacted a local assisted living facility where the woman had been residing. She was treated at the hospital, released and is living in a long-term care facility. “I am proud to say that here in the Town of Islip, we are fortunate to have the finest employees,” said Supervisor Carpenter. “Their untiring efforts in ensuring the well-being of others, is demonstrated daily through their humility and compassion to those they have sworn to protect,” added the Supervisor.

Nearly 250 people recently gathered at Glen Head Country Club in Glen Head, NY for the ACLD Foundation 2018 Annual Golf Outing, which raised more than $155,000 to benefit Bethpageheadquartered Adults and Children with Learning and Developmental Disabilities, Inc. (ACLD) along with the services as well programs it provides for adults and children with autism, learning and developmental disabilities. This year’s Golf Outing honoree was Lane Sieman of Long Beach, Executive Vice President and Chief Operating Officer of Long Beach-based Chem Rx Pharmacy Services, a long-term care pharmacy servicing the medicationrelated needs of people in residential supportive apartments and homes, intermediate care, adult day care, assisted living and skilled nursing care facilities. With the launch of ACLD’s Telemedicine Program in 2017, Chem Rx has been an integral partner in helping to decrease unnecessary emergency room visits for adults residing in ACLD community residences and apartments, which is why Mr. Sieman was selected as this year’s Golf

Each summer, Eastern Suffolk BOCES (ESBOCES) holds its popular Summer Career Exploration Program for students entering 8th, 9th and 10th grades so they can experiment with potential career possibilities through two-week, project-based introductory courses. This year the program ran from July 9-20 at the three ESBOCES technical career centers located in Oakdale, Bellport, and Riverhead. Federal and state education initiatives focus on ensuring that students leave high school properly prepared for college and adequately equipped to compete in a demanding
global workforce. These courses provide students with an opportunity to explore career interests long before graduation, show them what is required to succeed in those fields, and introduce them to career programs available in grades 11 and 12 through such educational providers as ESBOCES. To be eligible to participate in the Summer Exploration Program, students had to be entering grades 8-10 in the fall of 2018 and be 12 years old by the time the program commenced. Sessions ran Monday through Friday from 8:30 a.m. to 12 p.m. at the ESBOCES career
