County Sheriff Vincent DeMarco announced today that 19 children from Suffolk County will head upstate early Sunday morning for a fun-filled week at the New York State Sheriffs’ Association Institute’s 2014 Summer Camp. The Sheriffs’ Summer Camp is designed to provide a solid recreational program while fostering a sense of good citizenship. This will mark the 37th year of the camp’s operation. The Sheriffs’ Summer Camp, which is located near Penn Yan in Yates County, is supported by the Sheriffs’ Association’s Honorary Members through their contributions and annual dues. This year the camp will accommodate over 900 deserving boys and girls from across New York State. Sheriff DeMarco, in discussing the objectives and goals of the camp said, “The Sheriffs’ Summer Camp Program is designed to provide a child who ordinarily would not have the chance, an opportunity
to go away during the summer.” He added, “The primary objective is to create a positive interaction between the kids attending camp and the officers who participate in the camp programs. We have found from experience that the kids develop a renewed respect and understanding for the men and women who enforce our laws. The officers become their friends for a week.” Throughout the weeklong stay, the children observe special exhibits and demonstrations presented by Sheriffs’ Offices from across the state. Included in these presentations are boat and bike safety programs, law enforcement equipment and technical demonstrations, archery competitions for accuracy and even a talent show just for fun. Upon completion, all children are awarded a diploma for their participation in a program of “Good Citizenship and Law Enforcement Studies.”

Preparedness Forums The Town of Islip will host a series of public forums to help residents and businesses prepare for future hurricanes and significant storms. Multiple agencies will be on hand at each meeting to answer questions on a variety of topics, including loss of electricity, communications during an emergency, and handling medical emergencies during a storm. Other topics will detail how residents can best prepare their families and their homes for hurricanes, which may require that all family members be ready to evacuate if the need arises. Forums have been planned at various locations throughout Islip Town. “Hurricanes pose a very real threat to our Town, and every household needs to prepare and have a plan,”
said Islip Town Supervisor Tom Croci. “Although our coastal communities are most at risk, even our inland neighborhoods are threatened by the loss of electricity, downed trees, and lack of access to first responders in the immediate aftermath of a storm. Scholarships Awarded Teachers Federal Credit Union (TFCU), Long Island’s largest memberbased credit union, recently awarded six Long Island high school students with $1,000 scholarships to help fund their higher education. “We would like to congratulate this year’s scholarship winners,” says Robert G. HOUSING LOTTERY WINNERS - Islip Town Councilmen John Cochrane, Jr. and Steve Flotteron were recently joined by members of the Islip Community Development Agency (CDA) and the Long Island branch of the United Way to celebrate the official opening of a home in Brentwood. The CDA and the United Way partnered to construct a state-of-the-art energy-efficient home for the Calzada family that participated in a CDA housing lottery. The home was built with the aid of the United Way’s YouthBuild program, which teaches young members of the community the necessary skills to construct energy efficient homes.
Continuing its longstanding pledge to enrich the communities in which it operates, Westfield South Shore is pleased to announce it has awarded a $1,000 scholarship to Tim Maisonave, a 2014 graduate of Bay Shore High School. The scholarship is given to students pursuing a career in business. Tim’s high school classes included Advanced Accounting, Intro to Calculus, and College Business Law. He
will be attending SUNY Farmingdale in the fall, majoring in accounting. Celebrity Golf Classic Held The Marty Lyons Foundation (MLF) recently hosted its 29th Annual Celebrity Golf Classic at the Old Westbury Golf and Country Club. The golf outing was the foundation’s largest fundraising event of the year. Hundreds of supporters played golf and attended the evening festivities. The Marty Lyons Foundation was founded by Marty Lyons, a former NFL defensive lineman for the New York Jets and member of the legendary “New York Sack Exchange.” The MLF grants wishes to children, between the ages of three and seventeen, who have terminal or lifethreatening illnesses, and is the only nonprofit in the nation to offer second wishes. The foundation’s Man of the Year, Bobby Cunningham, Jr., owner of Duct Cleaning Co., Inc., was saluted at the evening dinner. “Bobby Cunningham, Jr., is an individual the foundation “The Celebrity Golf Classic
grows bigger each year. The foundation needs and appreciates the generosity of those who attend. All the members of our board and I welcome our supporters and thank the celebrity golfers. This is the 29th Classic and once again it has given us the perfect opportunity to interact with friends and foster support for our mission,” Lyons said. During the day golfers had the opportunity to challenge Lyons’ golfing skills at one special par 3 hole. The course was full of fun activities and food. Members of The New York Flight Crew Cheerleaders interacted with golfers who also enjoyed cigars from Davidoffof Geneva (NY) Inc., and cocktails provided by Georgi Vodka. The Marty Lyons Foundation is a 501(c)3 nonprofit organization. Efforts are made to raise over $200,000 each year to support the foundation’s wish granting program. The primary sponsors of
this year’s MLF Celebrity Golf Classic include Mr. and Mrs. Leonard Riggio, The LandTek Group, Milburn Flooring, Cunningham Duct Cleaning Co., Inc., and Star Industries/Georgi Vodka. Lyons’ determination led to the establishment of the foundation after his own personal experiences with sickness and the deaths of close family and friends. With the encouragement of his family and friends, he formed The Marty Lyons Foundation in 1982. Since that time the organization has granted over 6,500 wishes that have brightened the lives of countless children. Playing golf or attending the dinner helps to provide the foundation with the resources to fulfill its mission of granting children their special wishes. Habitat Groundbreaking Habitat for Humanity of Suffolk hosted a groundbreaking ceremony to celebrate the beginning of demolition on its very first property in Orient Point. Demolition crews, led by contractors Latham Sand & Gravel and Northfork Sanitation, ran heavy equipment, while future homeowner, Michael Bredemeyer, along with
volunteers and sponsors the Peter K. Ruhry Keys to Hope Foundation and Long Island Board of Realtors – North Fork Chapter were on hand to witness the tearing down of the dilapidated structure and clearing of the property for construction of Habitat’s first affordable home in Orient. A lifelong resident of Orient, Bredemeyer not
only resides in the east end town, but is also actively involved in his community. Bredemeyer is employed by the Orient Beach State Park and serves as an Assistant Parks and Recreation Supervisor. In addition, he volunteers with the Orient Fire Department where he has earned awards for being a high responder.

Snapshots & Timehops By: Jamie Lynn Ryan At this time last year, I was in the midst of an eightday tour of Ireland with 13 members of my family. And today, thanks to the wonders of a clever little app called “Timehop,” I am able to relive each day of that memorable vacation via the handful of photos I posted on Facebook throughout the journey. And they say too much sharing is bad! Of course, this is but a small sampling of the nearly 1,000 pictures I snapped over the course of the week, from takeoff to landing and everything in between. Seeing as I
am slightly obsessed with finding random scenes and candid shots to capture on a daily basis, you can just imagine how thrilled I was to explore one of the most beautiful lands abroad. Under any circumstances, it qualified one of the greatest experiences of my life. Coupled with the fact that it marked my first time on a plane and my first journey out of the country, well, that just added to the highlight reel. Considering that, prior to this, I had never ventured beyond the span of states between Vermont and Virginia, it was quite a momentous occasion. This past Christmas, I
attempted to compile just a “few” favorites to create calendars and a small book of the journey as gifts. Seemed like a simple enough task; however, four hours after my initial brainstorm, I was still sitting at my computer, poring over hundreds of photos, comparing and eliminating until I had it narrowed down to the “perfect” mix. As if there was such a thing. The perfection is in the moments you create, the unplanned, unstaged instants that bring to life stories and anecdotes to last a lifetime. We could all use a few more of those.
