healthcare by reducing morbidity and mortality associated with cancers. Mostly available in academic hospitals, Lu177 therapy provides an accessory treatment option for patients with NETs and can be considered in metastatic neuroendocrine cancers earlier in treatment. This advancement provides a new alternative for patients who don’t respond to other treatments. The drug consists of a radioactive isotope, Lu-177, attached to dotatate- a molecule that binds to GEP-NET cells that have a molecule called a somatostatin receptor on their surface. The drug then enters these somatostatin receptorpositive tumor cells, and radiation emitted by Lu177 helps to kill the cells.
“Lu-177 therapy is only the cusp of the burgeoning theranostics field where we will be able to bring stateof-the-art personalized therapies to our patients across Long Island and beyond to improve their underlying clinical condition and quality of life,” Tony Abraham, DO, MPA, Director of PET/ CT and Theranostics said. “In addition, we are glad to provide our oncologists and referring gastroenterologists with an additional armament in the therapy options available to them to fight and conquer cancer.” Most NET patients have tumors that express somatostatin receptors and NYCBS uses an FDA approved diagnostic imaging method that uses dotatate tagged with
a different radioactive element, gallium-68, to locate positive tumors using PET imaging services. “We are so excited to bring this remarkable treatment to the patients of Long Island who have neuroendocrine tumors. We will be the only comprehensive community-based cancer center that offers this in New York State so that patients don’t have to go to a hospital to receive this treatment,” stated Jeff Vacirca MD, CEO of NYCBS. New York Cancer & Blood Specialists (NYCBS) recently announced that it is the first community practice in New York State to administer Lu177 therapy (Lutathera): the first radioactive drug approved for targeted treatment for patients with neuroendocrine tumors (NETs). NETs form in cells that interact with the nervous system or in glands that produce hormones. These cells, called neuroendocrine cells, can be found throughout the body, but NETs are most often found in the abdomen, especially in the gastrointestinal tract. There is news of increasing Covid-19 cases in Florida and other states. Stony Brook Medicine experts weigh in on why this is happening and what practices are necessary to limit a pandemic spread. The goal of the lockdown was to have federal and local governments develop a response to the pandemic. That response should have been 1) effective contact tracing, 2) quarantining guidelines for people who are sick, 3) ramping up of testing in order to control, 4) rules and regulations about how to interact safely (i.e., with masks, outside, etc.), 5) a federal response to guide rolling shutdowns to control epidemic curves. I think that has happened in New York to some extent, though masking still seems to be an issue, and wearing masks seems to have been ignored by many in other states now experiencing increased cases.

Rhonda Klch started this foundation with the mission to offer services, resources and programs to consumers and small businesses that are facing financial distress. Although the details of financial markets may not be necessary for everyone, a good understanding of everyday finances is needed to ensure your home, bank account and additional assets are protected as you go about your life.

Although EFF has switched their programs from in person to virtual, they have been well received. They continue to offer free financial counseling and outreach resources for numerous families on Long Island. The Equity First Foundation has three different types of programs that they offer: Educational Institution Program This program focuses on k-12, post secondary, and trade schools with student types comprised of all abilities including special needs and developmentally disabled. It is offered as a workshop / assembly that can last for as short as 45 minutes to as long as a full day or mini series. Each program is uniquely designed to fit the educational facility after a comprehensive needs analysis. Some sample topics that can be addressed are: career options by salary, understanding
EquityFirstFoundation
money management, life skills, healthy financial choices, creating a budget, creating a savings account and more. Community Outreach Program The Community Outreach Program focuses on independent facilities, partnering charities and nonprofits, community centers, libraries, career fairs, guest speakers, events and more for all demographics. These are offered in as short as 45 minutes to as long as a full day or mini series. Some sample topics are: first time home-buyer, understanding student loans, improving your credit, avoiding senior scams, understanding your retirement plan and more. Corporate Awareness Program This program focuses on a lunch and learn structure for 10 or more employees. Some sample topics are: paying off debt, understanding your 401K, saving for vacation, your family on a budget and benefits of good credit. EFF has been on the front line of helping families in need with food and assisting with a health care PPE program. This pandemic has opened our community up to more financial hardships then imagined. This organization is asking for your help in becoming an advocate for their food drop initiative to help families like yours or your neighbors. Hunger does not discriminate in a time like this. If you would like to lead a team and assist with a food drive, become a drop off location or just help spread the word, they could use your help! (EOC of Suffolk) has received $1.7 million in federal funds to provide financial assistance to individuals and families facing economic hardships arising from COVID-19related disruptions. The funds are being made available to eligible Suffolk County residents
who have either lost their jobs, became temporarily unemployed, or faced financial difficulties because of the pandemic. The funds originate from the federal Coronavirus Aid, Relief, and Economic Security Act – commonly known as the CARES Act – which is providing $41 billion in funding to supplement the nationwide
Community Services Block Grant (CSBG) program. Signed into law on March 27, the relief program aims to address the consequences of increased unemployment and economic disruption resulting from the COVID-19 virus. “The Coronavirus pandemic has triggered the most damaging economic crisis America has faced
in some 80 years,” said Adrian Fassett, CEO of EOC of Suffolk. “During this difficult period, these federal funds will help our organization fulfill our mission of promoting the economic self-sufficiency of Suffolk County residents.” An applicant’s eligible expenses can include food, funeral costs, rental expenses, broker fees,
utility expenses, medical expenses, retraining expenses, clothing, bedding, toiletries, and other expenses. Household income cannot exceed 200 percent of poverty guidelines. The determination of financial eligibility for CARES assistance does not factor in an applicant’s supplemental

11th Annual Over 50 Fair Will Be A Virtual Charity Conference The annual Over 50 Fair, in its 11th year, will be a virtual charity conference benefitting The INN (Interfaith Nutrition Network). Usually the Over 50 Fair takes place at an area hotel and has attendance of 500-700 who enjoy its 30 exceptional classes, singles lounge, senior beauty queens, and more. Because of COVID-19, this year’s
event can be enjoyed by computer or phone on September 12 and 13 from 12-4 each day. 10 local speakers, some of whom are experts in their field, will be sharing information about a variety of topics of interest to Baby Boomers and seniors, including long term care insurance, a comedy show, Microsoft training, reverse mortgages, and cleaning
without chemicals. The Over 50 Fair is the brainchild of East Hills resident Barbara Kaplan, who also coordinates the hugely successful All Kids Fair each year.
