The Fresh Air Fund’s Western Suffolk and Nassau County Volunteer Committees held a summer get-together on July 20th at Adventureland Amusement Park. Local host families and their Fresh Air children enjoyed a dinner together where they shared their stories and experiences. The families then finished the night off enjoying amusement rides. Last Hope Animal Rescue & Rehabilitation, Inc. was recently awarded a $5,000 Veterinary Assistance Grant from Banfield Charitable Trust (BCT) to help owners undergoing economic hardships keep their pets healthy and offset costs in emergency medical situations so they are not be forced to surrender or euthanize their beloved dogs and cats. Last Hope is a non-profit organization striving to save death-due, abandoned and stray animals. The all– volunteer, nonprofit cares for dogs from municipal shelters, and cats from shelters as well as off the streets before seeking approved adopters. In 2014, Last Hope placed 568 cats and 260 dogs in loving, responsible homes. “The BCT grant helps our rescue to be more proactive,” said Linda Stuurman, president of Last Hope, “We can now intervene in special needs cases with veterinary aid; and, hopefully, prevent

people from making the heart-breaking decision to give up their pets; or worse, be forced to euthanize four-legged family members because of financial distress.” Community outreach, including a Fix-A- Feral program and free rabies vaccine clinics, is part of Last Hope’s mission. Having the ability to assist individuals with their owned pets occurs infrequently. “The generous BCT grant will enable us to expand our reach. Since most of our funds must be spent on the animals in our care, we’ve only been able to help a limited number of desperate, owned pets such as a senior Poodle needing extensive dentistry or a cat suffering from kidney stones,” said Stuurman, “Thanks to BCT we’ll be able to respond to more pleas for veterinary aid.” BCT has been working since 2003 to keep the most vulnerable populations together with

their pet companions and provides grants to nonprofit organizations and animal hospices to support these efforts. All too often sick, injured or abused animals die because their caretakers can’t afford to pay for the urgent care needed to save them. When these animals are surrendered to town shelters, their medical issues are such that they may be put down there. Our tenuous economy has increased the need for veterinary assistance grants. To apply for a BCT Veterinary Assistance Grant via Last Hope, the owner must show need such as disability, unemployment, homelessness or being a senior on a fixed income. On July 13th, Alzheimer’s Disease Resource Center, Inc. held its Fifth Annual Col. Kenneth F. Lawlor Memorial Golf Outing at the Huntington Country Club. Eighty-nine registered golfers took part in the event, which raised funds for Alzheimer’s disease research and care. Golfers also had the chance to win a car in the Hole-In-One Challenge while on the links. After a round of golf, the participants enjoyed a cocktail hour, dinner and a chance to win some raffle prizes. The event is named after Col. Kenneth F. Lawlor, who was diagnosed with Alzheimer’s in the last years of his life. His grandson, Keith Lawlor, who chaired the golf tournament, is also Vice President of ADRC’s Board of Directors. Suffolk Awarded Grant Suffolk County Community College has been designated as one of seven Entrepreneurial Assistance Programs (EAP) statewide to develop a Veteran Business Assistance Center and will receive a grant of up to $42,000 from Empire State Development (ESD) to enable the center to assist veterans with starting a new business, or to train veterans in the practices of entrepreneurship and prepare them to pursue self-employment opportunities. The Suffolk County Community College center will serve the Long Island Region from the Sally Ann Slacke Corporate Training Center on the college’s Michael J. Grant Campus in Brentwood. Governor Cuomo committed $350,000 in the

2015-2016 State Budget to invest in the development of EAP Veteran Business Assistance Centers (VBACs). The other Veteran Business Assistance Centers will be located in: • Adirondack Economic Development – North Country Region • Capital Chamber Foundation / AlbanyColonie Regional Chamber of Commerce – Capital Region • IBERO American Action League – Finger Lakes Region • Renaissance Economic Development Corporation – New York City Region • South Side Innovation Center at Syracuse University – Central New York Region • Washington Heights Inwood Development

Summer Experience Thirty-six smiling New York City children boarded buses on July 18th, headed for Western Suffolk, to reunite with their host families at the bus arrival in Commack. This summer, close to 4,000 children will enjoy a summer outside of the city with volunteer host families in suburban, rural and small town communities across 13 states from Virginia to Maine and Canada through

The Fresh Air Fund’s Volunteer Host Family Program. “I’m excited to go swimming and to watch the stars at night. I can’t see them at night in the city!” explains ten-yearold Tyrone about his Fresh Air experiences. Many volunteer families find their hosting experience so rewarding that over 65 percent of all children are reinvited to stay with the

same host families, year after year. The Fresh Air Fund, an independent, not-for-profit agency, has provided free summer experiences to more than 1.8 million New York City children from low-income communities since 1877. Preserve Clean-Up Set School-Business Partnerships of Long Island, Inc. (SBPLI) announces that the Seaford FIRST (For Inspiration and Recognition of Science and Technology) LEGO League Team #92 (the “Sea Lions”) is hosting an environmental cleanup at the Francis T. Purcell Preserve in Hempstead, New York on Saturday, August 8th, at 8 a.m. The primary habitat for many native plants and animals, this Hempstead plains area once occupied more than 40,000 acres in central Nassau County. Recognizing the years of neglect the preserve has endured, the team

members felt it was time to restore the park to its original grandeur. All Long Island FIRST Robotics Competition (FRC), FIRST Tech Challenge (FTC), FIRST LEGO League (FLL) and Junior FLL teams are welcome to participate in the cleanup. The Francis T. Purcell Preserve is located at 101 James Doolittle Boulevard in Uniondale, New York, near the Nassau Coliseum and Long Island Marriott. In addition to a call for volunteers, SBPLI is also requesting donations of bottled water, first aid items and garbage bags to help with the cleanup efforts.

“This event gives team members the opportunity to work together and help impact the environment in a positive manner,” says Chris Baker, Coach, Seaford FLL Team #92. “After visiting several local areas, we selected the Francis T. These events forced him to “see the frailty, unfairness and the wonder of life.” With the encouragement of his family and friends, he formed The Marty Lyons Foundation in December of 1982. Since that time the Foundation has worked to keep hope alive in the hearts of thousands of children and provide support to their families. The Marty Lyons Foundation provides wishes to children aged three to 17 years old who have been diagnosed as having terminal or lifethreatening illnesses. MLF is unique in that it will consider granting a second wish to a deserving child who may need the

hope and inspiration to face the battle of their lives for the second time around. Since it was established, The Marty Lyons Foundation has granted over 7,100 wishes that have brightened the lives of countless children. By playing a fun-filled day of golf or attending the dinner, supporters help provide the Foundation with the much needed resources to fulfill its mission of granting children their special wishes. Granting Wishes Sports legends and celebrities participated in the Marty Lyons Foundation’s (MLF) 30th Annual Celebrity Golf Classic on Monday, July 13th, at the Old Westbury Golf and Country Club. The event was held in support of the Foundation’s mission to grant special wishes for children with lifethreatening or terminal illnesses. The day began with a special visit from Shaun Carroll, a child from Commack suffering from a debilitating illness. Shaun and his mother Diane publicly thanked The Marty Lyons Foundation for granting their family a second wish this past May, a trip to Universal Studios in Florida. Shaun’s brother, Kevin, who suffers

from the same illness, was granted a wish in 2013 to go to Give Kids the World in Orlando. Another Foundation wish child, Michelle Izzo of Wantagh, and her mother Fortunata attended the awards ceremony during the evening reception, where they received special recognition. Michelle, who was diagnosed with leukemia, was granted her wish to go to Disney World in 2014 with her family. She has since undergone a heart transplant in January of this year. Foundation supporters were recognized and honored during the reception. Former New York City Mayor Rudolph Giuliani, received The Bill Gibney Lifetime Achievement Award. The award was renamed to honor the memory of Mr. Gibney, the first president of The Marty Lyons Foundation Board of Directors, who recently passed away. His tremendous efforts still impact the Foundation today. “Marty Lyons is an inspiration and the Foundation is doing important work for children and for families. I have been a supporter for many years and have met wish children and I have watched Marty interact

with them. Receiving this recognition at the 30th annual golf event is a special moment for me,” said former Mayor Rudolph Giuliani. The Foundation also honored this year’s Man of the Year Bobby Jordan, President of LI Sanitation Equipment, and recognized former NFL player Erik McMillan for his “positive influence in the game of life.” The Marty Lyons Foundation is a 501(c)(3) nonprofit organization founded by Marty Lyons, a former NFL defensive lineman for the New York Jets and member of the legendary “New York Sack Exchange.” Lyons’ determination led to the establishment of the Foundation after

Upon the recommendation of its Facilities Review Committee, the BayportBlue Point School District Board of Education is exploring the feasibility of moving forward with a building renovation project that would provide critical infrastructural, programmatic and facility updates at the district’s five schools. Over the course of the past two years, the Facilities Review Committee has examined the needs of the district’s facilities. They presented their recommended scope of work, totaling approximately $30 million, during the Board’s late June meeting. In addition, outdated science rooms at the secondary level would be updated and STEAM labs would be created at the middle school and high school. Cramped libraries would be updated districtwide to create efficient media

centers aligned with today’s 21st-century learning standards. Music classrooms and the auditorium at the middle school were also identified as needing renovation. The page also provides a link to an online survey for community members to share their input about this subject. Survey responses will be accepted until Monday, August 3rd. Distinguished Service Suffolk County Executive Steve Bellone presented the Suffolk Medal for Distinguished Service recently to Dr. Lee Koppelman, whose visionary work as a master planner has influenced Long Island for decades. “So much of what makes our region great can be ascribed to him,” the County Executive said at a hearing of the Suffolk County Legislature’s environmental planning and agriculture committee. “From our county’s vast open spaces to the tens of thousands of jobs located in the Hauppauge Industrial Park and the Route 110 corridor, we have Dr. Koppelman’s vision and leadership to thank. “And like most visionaries, some of his visions were a little ahead of their time,” the County Executive said. “Improved rail transit, improved mass transit, revitalized downtowns, greater diversity in housing stock. These are areas where Dr. Lee Koppelman was an often lonely voice, and now we know, he was 100 percent right.” Dr. Koppelman was Suffolk County’s first planning director, serving from 1960 to 1988 and led the Regional Planning Board for 41 years as executive director.

Celebrating Flag Day Connetquot Central School District’s (CCSD) Cherokee Street Elementary School Elementary School recently came together to celebrate Flag Day. Students and staff members dressed in their

colorful red, white and blue outfits, recited the Pledge of Allegiance and sang patriotic songs around the school’s flagpole. There were patriotic celebrations throughout the day ranging from Boy Scout and Girl Scout

Agricultural Support Nearly 150 New Yorkers came together recently to raise $65,000 in support of Long Island’s agricultural workforce at an event for the HRHCare Foundation and the Agricultural Health Fund. Hosted by Long Island Sustainable Winegrowers, Barbara Shinn and David Page of Shinn Estate Vineyards, and Jonathan Russo and Deborah Grayson, the first annual gathering celebrated Long Island’s iconic wine industry by raising funds to support health care access for its workers and to promote sustainable agriculture on Long Island. “Agriculture is a key economic driver of Long Island’s regional economy and a healthy workforce is key to making it sustainable in the longterm,” said Anne Kauffman Nolon, MPH, President and CEO of Hudson River

HealthCare (HRHCare), one of New York’s largest community health center providers. “The funds generously raised by local wine lovers and health care advocates will provide vital medical, dental and behavioral health services to the people who quite literally put food on our plates and drinks in our glasses. We look forward to an even bigger event next year.” Agriculture is the largest industry on Long Island, contributing nearly $260 million to the local economy, yet farmworkers and their families often struggle to gain access to quality health care despite their outsize economic benefit. Many of these families suffer from poor nutrition, asthma, musculoskeletal conditions, and a lack of preventive care. All the proceeds from the

“Honoring the Hands” event go toward a “Day of Health” for agricultural workers and their families, led by HRHCare, which serves more that 45,000 patients and employs nearly 250 people at its seven facilities on Long Island alone.
